Your posting last month put this series on my radar ... however, discussions of the retro-70's combat system and the fact that I'll soon have Battle Above the Clouds to satisfy my thirst for operational maneuver have placed this farther down my want list.

It will hopefully go large scale testing in my coming 1809 game then I will put in on BGG if it survives the tests...

Better odds of winning the lottery than getting my wife to play me in any wargame.

Then again, isn't "love" a game and marriage just another name for warfare? Hmmm. Maybe she has been playing me for 20 years...

I'll bite. I've been soloing the shorter GTC scenarios, Race to Spotsylvania, then the Wilderness and next probably the larger Spotslyvania scenario.

I've never played GCACW before. It is a fantastic system, very dynamic and just the right operational level. I really only have two problems with it. First is that it has fairly high wristage, which I don't mind much. But the main issue is I'm still coming to grips with just how many status markers I have to manipulate and know. The counters can stack high and you *have* to use the force displays.

I cannot *wait* for Battle Above the Clouds, which I preordered after play GTC.

I played a bunch of this in the past month, too. GTC seems to have the largest number of short scenarios of any in the series--that's why it is my favorite of the bunch. Recent posts on consimworld indicate that the designer well understands the appeal of the 2-3 turn game and will incorporate several in the next two releases (Battle Above the Clouds and Stonewall Jackson's Way II).

I have a suspicion that you'll like the game.

Here's a holiday shout out to all the Grogs reading this list.

I have a partial copy of the 5th edition of WiF with the following:

# 1 map "The Pacific" Australia to India, to the Eastern USSR to the Aluetians. Mint except for a 1 inch wide "fold" in the map's bottom edge.
# 11.4 Production Chart - Excellent condition
# Book "Rules of Play" 4th edition - very good condition
# Book "Advanced & optional Rules" 4th edition - excellent
# sheet "5th edition countersheet notes" - mint
# 2x builds chart - mint
# weather chart - mint
# countersheet 1 - USA, sweden, poland 5 units punched (2US 3 Polish)
# countersheet 2 - mint, unpunched
# countersheet 3 - mint, unpunched
# countersheet 4 - mint, unpunched
# countersheet 5 - mint, unpunched
# game box - solid condition but cosmetic damage from tape and shelf wear

Free (I might ask you to pay shipping if you live far away) to a good home. I'm also willing to part it out after we've left a couple days to see if anyone wants the whole enchilada.

Merry Wif-mas !

Just be aware that as Iain said, this is WIF 5th Edition. The current (since 1996) edition of WIF is (somewhat amusingly) called WIF Final Edition. Mapsare quite different. The basic rules system is the same but quite a few changes, enough that WIF5 and WIFFE aren't compatible, really.

You could playtest and learn first hand...

Edit: That answer isn't terribly helpful, is it? Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the war but from what I do know, the game perhaps gives the Austrians a greater chance to win than they enjoyed historically; there is more action on more fronts, and achieving a single, overwhelming victory like Konnigratz is difficult to replicate here. That being said, there is a lot of historical flavor and gameplay subtlety, and the system does an admirable job showing the challenges faced by both sides while avoiding a walkover for the Prussians.

Did I mention we're looking for playtesters?

The designer, John Firer, also created Spartacus, which explains the application of an ancients system to this era. I have not played "Spartacus", but gameplay looks similar.

I've often wondered this myself Gary. Particularly since I've yet to find a CDG that is either (a) in the PoG mold, or (b) set in modern scenarios (post American Revolution) that works as a simulation.

Yes that includes PoG ...

Oh, and I didn't like Spartacus either...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/386868

... no, I'm not much of a fan of CDGs, yet Hannibal is my only "10" so go figure.

If by "gem" you mean cold and hard ...

Seriously, I wanted to love this game, hell I own two copies (one UP). I find it a bit too dependent on the card draws, if the Anglos can bring forces to bear early ... it's all over.

The optional rules are a must.

In the end I probably dislike the game because my ancestors fought in the scenarios it portrays, lost, and had their culture suppressed for two centuries as a result.

But I will say this, if you like CDGs - you must try the game. It is different from others in the genre, quite asymmetric, and rather evocative of it's historic milieu.

That's what I found. I was told that nobody plays the campaign game, and the tournament scenario is the only one worth playing. But even in the tournament scenario, the timing of reinforcement and leader draws is hugely important. I also had one game where I raised every single native unit on the map, sent them howling down on the English, rolled all the raids... and got 1 VP.

After three plays, all determined largely by luck, I traded away my copy.

So there you have it, the man is playing a campaign of Barbarossa: Army Group North and doesn't have time for OCS ...

Although the talk is there's a Race to Lennigrad OCS title in the pipe line somewhere.

Then you'll be able to join OCS games together to game the entirety of Barbarossa from North to South ...

Oh wait, there are no other OCS titles about Barbarossa, are there?

Oh, no need to duck - except maybe for those brutes I sent to your door...

But you know, things are gettin' a bit confusing. Since October I not only found a OCS copy of Sicily, but also of Hube's Pocket and Korea - without paying an arm and a kidney. Then Baltic Gap unpunched and all of the "end-of-the-year-meetings" - I'm way behind clipping and storing the stuff - and far from behind playing. Glad that I got AGN going and hopefully ASL close.

devil

But truly - these are problems I like to have. Only two games left on my "Holy Grail" - list...

There is not much talk of OCS covering Army Group North in the Barbarossa period from the guy who counts, Dean Essig. He isn't really interested in the summer blitz period -- too one-sided -- and by fall you reach the beginning of a very static couple of years near Leningrad. Pretty hard to turn 10/41-4/43 into something that screams "play me" up in AGN country.

The other problem with AGN in 1941 is that the armies are essentially passing through a funnel, and by the time you get near Leningrad the actual front narrows considerably. So unit density would be a problem. By the way, Sicily and Tunisia both suffer from this a bit late in those campaigns.

I absolutely love Korea. By all means play Baltic Gap next, but don't let Korea stagnate for long!

Absolutely right - looks like you watched our game before. It was walking thru strongpoint after strongpoint, slowly wearing off the German juggernaut while the Russians couldn't muster up enough firepower to crush the Germans.

It might look different due to the VPs in the campaign but I'm far from being an expert since we hadn't played the whole campaign often enough. But regardless of who wins I always have a blast with these BIG games - be it OCS or EFS.

Back to the game: The problem really is the marsh / swamp and the big lake that either split your forces (going left / right - left was an option the that Wehrmacht preferred but was denied by Hitler; right lets you go thru marh / swamp - combine this with mud weather and you're really stuck up to your neck). Another thing that bugs me - not sure how historical this is, is the huge amount of strongpoints the Russians receive.

Update
We played Battleground Historical Warfare: Second Punic War 218-201 BC Basic Game instead. A more brutal, crowded game than the fantasy version, with weaker, less specialised units, and more of them for the same points cost, in the same area! Thoroughly good fun though...

This has recently been released at a lower price and that got me considering it as a holiday purchase. "My wife will play it with me" I told myself.

Then I laughed and discounted the whole idea. I'm not sure who'd play it with me so I passed on it for now.

We made an ill advised decision and played a 5 player game of this last week after only having an hour or so to go over the rules. Needless to say it didn't go over very well b/c we didn't have a clue to really what we were doing and left a lot out.

The rules really didn't help as they aren't very well written or oraganzied.

Over the next few days I really studied the rules, and even went through the rulebook with a highlighter and made some notes. I know have a good grasp on everything and I really feel this will be an outstanding game if I can ever convince the group to try it again. That will be a tall order I feel after our first experience.

This is a really good game. I'm hoping to get another 5-player game on the table in the next month or so. I didn't play my first game of Napoleonic Wars until after I'd played Wellington, which I think helped a lot when it came to decoding the rules.

I still think that Here I Stand just about edges this one for best multiplayer CDG.

I preordered it from Simmons Games. I got it about two weeks ago. It should be available in stores, although Simmons is probably your best bet.

I was also fortunate enough to play this at BGG.Con 2009.

Last night's game was a disaster for me - a crushing defeat for the French. We were never in it.

Maria is phenomenal. It has taken the basic mechanics of Friedrich and improved on them dramatically, much the same way Napoleon's Triumph did with Bonaparte at Marengo. Although not a war-gamer, I cannot recommend this game enough. After two plays (hoping to get a third this week) it has easily become my favorite game of the year.

The Civil War Brigade Series works very well for me (suspension of disbelief and all,) and Three Battles of Manassas is probably my favorite among all the games in the group that I've played.

Tom Raymo and I are about one day into the big scenario (6.4) from "Clash of Volunteers". We have it set up in the big table in his basement so we can leave it up between sessions. I'm eager to get back so I can write more orders for my misguided subordinates to bungle!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think line of battle is an attempt to make RSS more playable, because of its sheer size and playtime. They aren't that different to be honest, not at their core and CWB is simple enoigh already for my money. Not saying a new edition wouldn't be cool, but its hard to tell if it is necessary.

Eric's Union troops "bungled" their way into a rout of the Confederates! The main struggle was over the Stone Bridge across Bull Run. In the end, Evans and both of Cocke's brigades were destroyed which put the rebels in such a large VP hole that a Union Major victory was inevitable. Well played! Eric and I are now discussing playing April's Harvest next month!

Tom and I are discussing the project of working our way through all the CWBS games in historical order, playing the campaign scenario of each (we're not quite sure exactly how serious we are.)

I think Scenario 6.4 from "Clash of Volunteers" is a tough one for the CSA. Their command structure makes it extremely difficult to mount any kind of attack, and they have so few troops on board in the first day that the USA can fairly easily grab spots like Henry House Hill and the Stone Bridge. I may have been lucky in having my orders accepted, but the CSA gets only a 2VP benefit for playing 6.4 instead of 6.3 and that doesn't sound like nearly enough to me.

The follow-up to last month game. We decide to restart and switch side , so I am now playing the Allies.

It started with a game of cat and mouse on the Lybian front, with not much happening. My hand wasn't too good, many cards that would have been useful later but that I got too early(like getting the AUS reinforcement in my first hand, leaving me little choice but to play it and send the AUS in Irak to start which wasnT' optimal for me right now), while the axis hands looked alot better.

1940 mostly went by without much happening. Burdia fell to my allies, but that's no great feat. I also started the offensive a bit in the south, but with all the units in limited supply and some really bad rolls, it lead nowhere. VP track was standing at 11

1941 Once again the axis get a really good hand and while I didn't get a bad one, it wasn't up to par to the axis hands. He managed to activate Irak and also had the card to give him a division to appear there. At least my AUS division was still there but having Irak as a threat really wasn't in my agenda! Plus he payed the card where I had to eliminate 3 divisions and BR armor, ouch, I wasn't expecting that(this is only our second game, and the first time was mostly a learning game where we never got pass second round of 1941) I had to give him 1VP, it would have opened my frontline too much had I not done that. I managed at least to get Tobruk and stationed BR armor division there with some brigades. We both ended the first turn with a card to limit the others hand size, so that advantage got somewhat negated. So the next turn I draw 6 cards... and all are from the year 1940, ARGH, a bad shuffle when I mixed the 2 decks together! 3 of those cards where combat cards too. Luckily, the axis didn't have much better so it was a round of small skirmishes but it allowed me to clear some units in Etiopia. In the 3rd round the german arrives at the front and I must say I wasn't in too good position to make a strong stand, I had diverted too much energy in SA and Irak and my front line was pretty meager. We are now in the fall of 1941, I managed to hold Irak off but it's still a threat and my units there being in limited supply really sucks. I cleared all but one of the IT unit in SA(really must get that one before the end of the turn!) and the Lybian front was reinforced a bit by the Indian divisions, so I should go back on the offensive there soon enough. I also got a nice hand with lots of OPS and reinforcements in it(finally!)

We played one card in for the Fall round then called it a night. VP stands at 10 right now, not the position I was expecting to be in(Isn't there a dang card to end that dang Irak revolution?) but I'm hoping to push the Lybian front when we resume this game.

We are still learning the cards and making rookie mistakes because of it, but that's part of the fun

We resumed and finished our game yesterday.

Before the end of fall 1941, the poor IT BR in etiopia was completely overunn and destroyed(finally!) The rest of fall 1941 was mostly uneventful, I pushed on the lybian front but the 1 GE DIV there retreated along with the IT forces, no fights. Iraq still has a german division and BR that threatens my home supply source, so I must leave 3 units there for the moment.

1942 - a bloody year. I decide to remove the Iraqi threats but 2 consecutive rounds of fighting there ends the same way, a draw and bloody loses on both side! Then my opponents play a card that surprise me to say the least. I have to move 2 IND or BR DIV in Syria or give him VP! This completely scrambled my plan, but then I noticed all the juicy yellow cities in Iraq and thought it wouldn't be too bad to send the 2 IND DIV there and would probably even be an advantage for me as I would finally end that Iraqi threat. And indeed that is what happened, in the next couple of round I captured Baghdad, BOOM IR units, and 2 other major ciies there, putting the VP at 5. I also use a card to redeploy some units and put a FF brigade with it's brother in Chad, hoping to get a certain card eventually. The lybian front is mostly secure but another GE armor division makes it's arrival, and I almost lose Tobruk. I quickly move fresh troops there the round after. We get new cards, having finished round 6, and move to spring 1942. Yes, another great hand! And YES, victoria cross! I move my Chad FF brigade out and put them in front of his IT DIV that is guarding the road to Tripoli. My opponent don't see them as a threat and concentrate his effort on getting troops in Sicilly in hope of getting Malta(little does he knows I also have the Spitfire card in my hand to delay him should the need arise...) Next round my FF brigades attacks, with Victoria Cross so they fire on the DIV table. I roll enough for 4 steps damage, The IT unit is destroyed!(there was no IT BR left in the replacement box) I move in Tripoli, all Axis unit are OOS! I also lost 2 steps in the battle so my opponents feel secure that he'll wipe them out of tripoli before the attrition phase. GE armor DIV are brought back, but of course it costs many ops to do so and the closest is still one space short of Tripoli while the other is 2 spaces away, so he'll need at least 2 rounds to make his attack with the closest armor DIV. Now now now... No more GE on the Lybian front, and I have some nice troops in Tobruk, which is a port like Tripoli... I play 3 OPS for redeployment and send an AUS DIV from Tobruk to Tripoli! Opponent gives up the game at that point. His armor shift advantage on the CRT being negated by his OOS status, and all the OPS it was costing just to move units, the chances of winning back Tripoli before the end of the turn was meager at best. Allies victory! My opponent swear he'll never leave an IT division alone again to guard the road

We never got to see Rommel or the americans.

The FF "backdoor attack" on Tripoli seems like a rather gamey and unrealistic trick to me.

I've got to admit that I've only seen it work against rookie Axis players, as once the Axis side is aware of such a threat an extra Italian division or IT armor BG in Tarhuna is usually enough to contain the FF units.

In any case, the reward to the Allies (a minimum of two Italian divisions stuck in Tarhuna for good and a permanent threat to the Axis rearguard) seem pretty big for such a cheap price (1-2 SR points).

I have this set up on the table. Played the first scenario once, and the second scenario three times. Setting up for the Campaign game. Gonna see if I can pay my euro gamer friend to play me in the campaign game, the other Wargamer in my area is recovering from Neck surgery.

I got this from my wargame secret Santa and the map is being unfolded almost as I type this. I've got things going on right now that are keeping me from any f2f gaming so this might be the perfect game for my immediate warganing future. I'm ready to take the beach.

Resolving fire is a bit tedious, but a very good solitaire game. I don't know of many solitaire only games that aren't tedious in some way.

My problem is that I'm happy to play two player games solitaire - many play very well that way.

Well, that and I'm a curmudgeon
