Despite being labeled by Time Magazine as "The Decade from Hell" for society in general, it was truly a second golden age of wargaming. Did a search of wargames published 2000 > 2009. And, used those titles on the Top 100 BGG Wargames list (Dec 16th), plus a few other highly rated (7.00+ - and at least 100 ratings) and one or two titles I really dig.

Games are listed by year. And, I included a ranking from the BGG Top 100 Wargame list (if the title made that list). And, a few comments here and there.

Regarding the games: 34 WWII games (under the usual 50/50 hobby split)...and ONLY 3 Battle of the Bulge titles in this group of about 80 wargames By mechanics: looks like less than 1/2 (I counted about 35) are the traditional hex-counter games we grew-up with. 12 Card Driven Wargames (CDWs), about 10 block games, and about 20 other types (card assisted, plastic men, etc). However, although those games employ cards, blocks, plastic, and what not, they are still very similar to what we have been playing the last 50 years with the big exception of little downtime (much more interactive) between plays (verses the old days of - "oh, it's your turn? I think I will go mow the lawn.")

Regarding game co's, I counted 29 from GMT, 15 from MMP and the rest from the smaller game co's in the hobby (Clash of Arms, Decision Games, L2, etc). Good to see that diversity of smaller wargame co's surviving.

I also counted about 14 monster games, which, is great news to see them so prevlant on the list of high ranked wargames. No way of life games though in the mode of Empire in Arms, World in Flames or ASL. Maybe those won't ever be replaced.

Many of these games got a BIG push from ACTS, Consim, BGG, Vassal, Cyberboard and the Podcasts - none of which really existed in the 90s.

If you have a spare $5,000, you could buy the whole list; assuming 80 games at an average price of $65 (some monsters push up the average price).

This list fits within an analysis of the Top 100 BGG Ranked Wargames I conducted a few weeks ago:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/475267/quick-analysis-of...

...and a more in-depth analysis of wargaming 1958 > 2008:

http://www.thewargamer.com/grognard/gamedata.pdf

Feel free to add if I missed some (that didn't make the cut) - and indicate a reason why the game is so great.

I'll prune from the list if we get any clunkers arrrh

Let's hope "The Teens (2010 > 2019)" produce a wealth of wargaming titles similar to "The Naughts".

Year 2000. #55 of the BGG list (as of Dec 16). Had to laugh that this old foogie kick'd off the list; many of us played the Milton Bradley version about 40 years ago. Entry level game - and there were alot of those this decade (M44, C&C, TOI, etc). And a remake - and there were al number of those this decade. Ditto with series games.

What's new? A ton of Card Driven Wargames from the We the People and Paths of Glory 1990s tribe. And, the comeback of big honkin monster wargames during the decade. Both the CDWs and monsters were aided significantly by Cyberboard & Vassal.

This game just did not work for me. I had one game where most of my troops were on the right flank. I never drew a card to activate them. My opponent walked right up to them, took no losses and mowed them down. Because I can't draw a card, they can't even fire defensively??? Traded away, twice!

A great simulation of lack of command and delays. There is a long way from HQ to the front with written orders. Written orders based on assumptions and outdated information. (Try The Gamers CWB series if you do not believe me).

Be patient and wait for your correct cards. You may trust luck and try something stupid -but do not blame the game if you loose badly. Always try to figure out worst case before making a move.

2000. Part of well regarded series. First of 29 GMT games making the list; picking up the weight previously carried by Avalon Hill classic before its unfortunate demise. And, first of 22 games on this list I have purchased, and really want to play, and, sadly, haven't been able to. I've got enough unplayed games from just this decade to last me for the next one! Well, maybe not. arrrh

At least there is a very attractive VASSAL module for this one now. For a long time, you had to use Cyberboard and a rather garish module if you wanted to play this.

Anyway, its well-worth it. A fantastic game.

The asymmetrical playing of the two sides is what makes this game so good. It also is what makes the rules hard to learn as there are so many small exceptions and rules for the many different troop types. I really need to play this again real soon.

Than was possible, or than was actual? How can we say it was not possible for it to end earlier?

By "the glove", I meant the dance - how forces concentrate or not - the war of posts, the raiding, the relative size of forces, the combat table, etc - and how it all fits together. Feels like the Wilderness War from what I've read.

Does it duplicate the actual historical campaign? Sometimes. Sometimes not. I don't play wargames to duplicate the historical results; would rather read a book or watch a movie.

And, player strategies have evolved into "the death star". That happens in the card driven wargames - the sharks keep beating on the design with ahistorical strategies. This is good. Sometimes the designer then issues new rules to adapt. Sometimes not.

2002. #87. CDW. Fun follow-up by Ted R to Paths of Glory. Original took some heat, but the sharks stepped in, made suggestions, and Ted R. responded. Upgraded rules/cards play well. Still, one of the few playable (one long day)/fun wargames on the whole European Threatre with enough chrome to keep the nutcases interested and challenged.

I think this game is under-rated.

I love how european theater games can put the scale of the conflict into context. I think most Americans who don't study history would be shocked to see the extent to which the primary struggle was waged in the east. Having to juggle the German strategic priorities is an eye opening task. I particularly relish agonizing over the diversion of resources to North Africa, and later to the west front. For North Africa, its just a single army, but by late 1941 the line in Russia is lenthening dramatically, and retiring a 5 OPs card to send in the DAK is a tough call. If going for the quick win I usually leave Rommel cooling his heals in Germany.

The ability to pull off multiple amphibious landings as the allies is also something I enjoy.

Few games can provide the insights offered by this game in a single map design, and in 8-10 hours of play.

This game didn't do it for me.... A couple reasons:

Starts in 6/41 after all the cool strategic decisions have been made
The PoG system just never felt right on the Eastern Front.

That having been said, maybe I need to go back and give it another shot...

It is a shame this and its successor Shogun are on the list. Not that they are bad games, but they really seem out of place. I guess you might argue their lack of wargame lineage makes them odd choices for a wargames list (I know you are just using the BGG tags, I'm commenting more generally). Even TS is firmly rooted in Wargame tradition.

Agree; we probably need a "power politics" class of games. And agree with TS. When TS was in development, a number of us wargamers playtested it one weekend. I don't remember anyone saying, hey, it's not a wargame. Didn't even occur to us that it wasn't. I'd suggest that it is because of the point you make; that it is rooted in the wargame tradition.

Several reasons, firstly there are all the ASL shillers, who give ATS a 1 or low rating on principle and secondly, the system just isn't that popular. I do like the game though.

I support my rating. ASL has a ton of rules, and many adherents think that makes it "realistic". However, I think the excess of rules essentially make it unplayable (hence the "1" rating). And it's "realism" is seriously harmed by the sleaze tactics inherent in the sequence of play and it's poor modelling of artillery.

That's an old myth, thankfully; Most ASL grogs now accept it's nothing more than a game. For me, the theme may as well be painted on; It's just chess with a binder full of rules. Twenty years ago when I was 16 I thought it was realistic and was disappointed to discover it wasn't; But now I love the *game* more than ever.

Anyone who says ASL is realistic has a lot to learn about life.

There are so many examples, some are quite humorous. You don't want to stop that tank before unloading the squad riding it? No problem, just rotate the turret and force them off! That's one of my favorites. On a more serious note, a worse realism issue is player omniscience.

ASL is about as realistic as The Dirty Dozen. But if you want fun, learn ASL!

I play this game online on the various yahoo groups. After playing the game for almost a year I can say it takes me about half an hour to put a move together per game (currently have about 3 games running) and this time should get down to 15 minutes per plane. I would not qualify that as a lifestyle game (but that may not be true for everyone). I have enough time to play other games as well, such as the occasional game of ASL, other wargames, computer games, and xbox games.

Needless to say that I like this game very much!

I'd pick the one that interests you the most historically. For me that is this game, and its a fine choice to start.

At first I was intimidated by the rulebook, but just read it over, then set up a small scenario and start pushing units around. It falls into place very quickly.

Either Deluxe Alexander or Deluxe SPQR would be my recommendation. They both have a ton of scenarios of various sizes and complexity levels. If you can get both at a good price, you'll be set.

Dang pretty game though, and more scenarios than you can shake a stick at with all the expansions.

Happens all the time in war; those damm counters not following orders...or getting lost...or doing some bonehead thing or another One development in wargaming I really dig over the last 20 years is how the designs increasing reflect the friction and politics of war. I always laugh when a eurogamer complains that "the game has too much luck". Yeah. Most of history is about too much or not enough luck.

Yep, agree 100%. Which is why one of my favorite thoughts comes from the esteemed baseball philosopher Lefty Gomez, who said "I'd rather be lucky than good."

Yes, Liberty is better. I would rate Hammer of the Scotts higher, but the fog of war does not work well for me in that game because the nobles all return home every year. Therefore, I find I usually know which blocks are where.

I remember when I first discovered BGG in late 2005, this was in (or near) the top 10. I still think its one of the best wargames there is. I only wish there was a one map version so I could leave a solo game set up.

Europe Engulfed, along with Friedrich, is the game that I find myself most longing to play, year after year, but I rarely get the pleasure due to its being multi-player. EE has the added challenge of being a multi-session game too, and thus I haven't played in several years.

The best part of a block system is the fog of war. However, when ALL of your blocks are in one space on the map, well, so much for the fog.

Too bad too. It does a nice job hard wiring in the air and naval subsystems.

If you like blocks/fog then go for East/West/Euro Front
If you like design for effect air/sea/political subsystems, Totaler Krieg is your bag.
Fast paced? Barb to Berlin
Simulation? WWII:ETO or AETO
Fun? World in Flames

Not a bad game, there are just better choices out there. Maybe the best audience is the folks who are graduating from Axis and Allies or those who don't have the time or desire for some of the heavies.

Excellent game. I am sorely tempted to get the collectors edition, but can't imagine actually playing with anything that cost that much. Would LOVE to order the oversize cards alone, though, as the font on these cards can make you go blind. Its seriously got to be about 6 point font, and my eyes aren't getting any better now that I've crossed into my 40's.

Another interesting design. The card battle resolution seems so weird when you read the rule book, but when it starts playing out in front of you on the game board, it shows brilliance. As Prussia, you really feel the pressure on all fronts.
I have many plays of this and have seen all sides win. My victory with Prussia was one of my more satisfying war game experiences.
I do believe this game plays better with 3 players, than four as there is less overall down time for any one player.
Looking forward to trying his new follow up game, Maria

Play this game the next time you get three or four guys together. You won't regret it.

Brilliant game that really emphasizes maneuver at the strategic and operational level. The combat system seems a bit weird, but its a simple engine that doesn't get in the way of what this game is really about: maneuver.

This is probably the best game released this decade that I have played. Not just a good simulation, but a great game. Two thumbs up for me.

There are a lot of OCS titles on this list (for good reason ). I have not yet played this one, but I hope to this year.

From Dean Essig, the best wargame designer on the planet IMHO.
And he's improving. The upcoming "Line of Battle" and "Battalion Combat Series" are very exciting.

We need a Dean Essig fan microbadge I completely agree. I've always like OCS and SCS, but this last year I finally got to play CWB and the amazingly good GD42 (which takes TCS significant step ahead).

Thank you, as always David, for the great read. And happy New Year Grognards. I think 2010 is going to be a good year for gaming.
