Age of Steam is Martin Wallace's great gift to Euro gamers who want to play a train game, but don't have the 4-6 hours necessary to invest in a meatier option like the 18xx series which AoS was inspired by.

AoS was originally published in 2002, and became an almost immediate success. Because of the positive reaction, both Warfrog and Winsome games have since produced several expansion maps to add further life to the game.

As of 2005 AoS is also starting to develop a very healthy fan made expansion community. 3 of these (The Bay Area, Reunion Island, the Moon) were released at Essen 2005 and as of 2006 the expansion releases are accelerating at an alarming rate.

This list is a simple recounting of all of the AoS maps available to date, and is intended as a way for aficionados to debate the relative merits of the various maps as well as to detail the different options available and what they do to the game for those who are looking to pick up the game and an expansion or two.

As I noted above, as of 2006 the sheer number of free fan-made expansions is starting to become overwhelming, and it will be my policy from here to add them to the list as soon as a finished version of the map and rules exist in an immediately useable way. There are a number of prototypes available at any given time, but maps will not join this list until they are finished products.

The new Geeklist ordering function is now allowing me to fix the order of this list up a bit. From here on out officially licensed / commercially released expansions will always be moved to the top of the list and organized by date of release, while finished, internet download fan expansions will be later in the list.

Note: I am now associated with AoS Team, the group that released Moon, Mars, Iraq, NY Subway, 20 000 Rails Under the Sea and so forth. I will never rate my own maps, and I believe I can rate expansions other than my own with as much "objectivity" as I can other games, but for those of you who are skeptics, consider this your good-natured warning. All comments about maps that were released prior to Essen 2008, at the very least, should be taken as "pure" because I was not associated with AoS Team prior to that.

Great Britain is John Bohrer's 2011 expansion for Age of Steam.

Though the map largely follows John's preference for tweaking rather than massively overhauling the rules, it does feature a large, triple section map that is densely populated with cities and bonus payments are made for crossing national boundaries.

Greece and Cyclades are Alban Viard's 2011 AoS map releases.

Greece features a tight, peninsular map with the massive three hex Athens dominating the southern portion of the board. The new rules simulate the recent economic crisis and increase income reduction as well as reducing the amount of money that shares pay out.

Cyclades, meanwhile, is differentiated mostly by its non-hex-based map where players place markers the lines and corners dividing the islands. The capricious (player-controlled) wind can also interfere with goods delivery in significant ways.

African Diamond Mines and Taiwan Cube Factories is the first pair of maps by Ted Alspach for Essen 2011.

ADM features a "depth counter" that apparently regulates the value of the resources being pulled out of the mine hexes.

The Cube Factories, meanwhile, incorporates some sort of resource combination mechanic, presumably at the aforementioned factories.

The only revealed rule for these maps is the fact that cities in western Australia pay income bonuses.

Outer Space and Reversteam are the third pair of maps from Alspach released in 2011.

Reversteam seems to feature a more conventional map, where cities apparently accept everything but their own colour.

The Orient Express and Dis-Oriented Express are pre-order bonuses from Ted Alspach that you receive if you order his other 2011 maps.

The former map appears standard and no new rules have been mentioned. The latter features a map that is broken up, and seems to have pre-printed links that connect the hexes in odd ways.

This is just a break. The maps below this entry that have their own geeklist entries are print and plays that I believe have been vetted substantially.

The very bottom of the list contains an entry with a list of print and play expansions that are available, but which were not all that substantially playtested.

Japan.

One of the first fan-made variant maps for Age of Steam and available free as a download from the base Age of Steam page (http://files.boardgamegeek.com/viewfile.php3?fileid=13216)

Japan is intended for 3-4 players and features a unique, long and skinny map which is all but impossible to do with a proper stiff board.

Japan introduces some interesting variations to the game which tightens it up considerably. Firstly, it changes the locomotive into a "Bullet Train" which temporarily upgrades your engine (just for that round) rather than doing so permanently but which can temporarily take you up to 7 instead of the normal 6 cap. In addition, the urbanization action, the other traditional "power" action in the game, has been altered so that the placement of the city counts as one of your three track builds, which significantly alters the power of that action.

I initially thought that the bullet train would weaken the locomotive, but after having played this map I feel that it is actually too good because it can make it too easy for the leader to pull away from the rest of the pack. I do like the shape and physical design of this map because it encourages some seriously cut-throat action, and I actually found production quite useful as a second pick (behind the bullet) but feel that the 7 engine is a little over the top and would likely set that rule aside if we pull this map out again.

Still, you can't beat the price on this map and it is certainly worth trying out given that the only cost involved is some ink and paper.

Cheshire.

A fan made expansion, like Japan, available from the base Age of Steam page. A bit more bare-bones in its presentation, but also fairly expansive, and helps fill the high scale niche.

The only special rule involves building a tunnel between two cities, which requires not only a large cash expenditure (8$), but the engineer role as well.

Northern England.

Yet another fan-produced map, and again, available as a download in the files section of the main page.

Some rules changes in this one, of course. Two of the cities have altered production, receiving more columns on the production chart. Additionally, there is a novel new "port" system which produces goods when numbers are not successful in producing goods on the growth chart rolls (i.e.: I roll 5, but all the 5's are already out, then a good grows onto the port instead).

The files are available here:

There are two ferry routes, but other than that the map seems to follow the standard AoS rules. The size of the map looks like it would cause some heavy competition in short order though.

I have not played this map yet, but I should be getting to it soon now that there is an easily printable version of it available.

India is a fan made expansion.

The map and rules (French) are available here:
http://claudeparenteau.free.fr/

The English rules translation is here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/fileinfo.php?fileid=16533

This expansion features fairly extensive changes to the AoS system. To begin with, maritime links exist as in several other expansions, but a new uber link is available, and though it costs more money, it also functions as a 2$ link. Urbanization is changed so that instead of placing a new city you are instead allow to place a 2 exit tile in a town and seed it with one goods cube from the new city portion of the goods display. Production is also changed to allow direct goods placement onto the board from the new city portion of the goods display. Finally, black cubes are more valuable in India, when one delivers them one scores the normal income boost, but then the cube is kept in front of the player who delivered it. They then have two options, they can either save it until the end of the game, where it will be worth 1 bump on the income track, or, if they have 2, they can immediately trade them in for an immediate single bump of income.

I have not played this map yet, but I am intrigued by the changes to the system and will probably do so soon.

The map of Spain has some minor rules twists, mainly having to do with the Baleares islands off the coast of Barcelona. These islands have sea routes going to them, start with additional goods, and can have fresh goods put onto them directly by taking the production role. Other than that, the rules are standard AoS.

I have not played this map yet.

This map is apparently the first in a series of 2 player, space-themed maps which were inspired by the Scotland map up above. No major rules changes, though there are tunnels which effectively function as the sea routes do in several of the AoS expansions and algae spaces which effectively function as rivers.

I have not played this map yet, but I will probably get to it soon.

The rules translation from French is currently a work in progress, which is going on here:

The major rules changes/thematic touches on this map have to do with building restrictions (which island you can build on) as well as the possible use of a ferry, and the existence of sea routes.

Chesapeake & Ohio.

A fan made expansion designed by David Fair and available for download from the Geek.

The rules:

The board: (full size PDF, needs to be cut for printing, 24x18" single page)
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/fileinfo.php?fileid=21762

This map is designed for 4-6 players, and incorporates a number of rules variations, including a modification of Ted Alspach's chain delivery mechanic, and a creative new rule that allows players to place factories onto cities. The factories, in thematic fashion, mean that cities will gain more goods, as each time a delivery is made to the city, two more goods are placed onto it. Factories also give bonus income to their owner when a delivery is made to their locale, but they also increase end of round expenses.

Neat map concept, I will definitely be printing and playing this one soon!

Portugal is a fan-made expansion released by Vital Lacerda. Its details can be found here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/360222

The map looks to be fairly basic, with modified sea links that can be owned by multiple players being the main hook. The designer states that this was designed for 3-4 players. I would guess that 4 is optimal because of the existence of the unmodified Loco and Urb rules (i.e.: gamut of good roles with 3, typical of most AoS maps not specifically designed for 3 so hard to fault him on it).

This looks like a solid (and free!) option for people who want something different, but not too far removed from the basic game and, based on the post, it was vetted quite extensively for a non-commercial fan release.

This entry contains a number of print and play / fan designed maps that are available both here on the Geek and other places. The maps lumped into this space are what I would term raw releases, or ones which have received only light playtesting, in most cases the designer is seeking feedback on the design as a result.

Maps currently not on this list due to prototype status include:
