Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

... fired a bunch of stuff in my game bag.

I have a small game bag that lives in my car, with sets of dice, card games and other small things that i can use to play games on the road. This single deck has so many options almost by itself that i no longer carry physical dice or cards anymore. For those who need a huge space saver, its just perfect.

Fired Risk and started my descent into the deep dark board gaming world. This was the single game our board game group played for 3 years, because it is so simple, yet so complex and social.

Still the purest most exciting board game in my collection. There is nothing like just you and your wits against six other equally determed players. Game of Thrones is quicker, Here I Stand has better structure, but Diplomacy will always have that special spot in my heart

Replaced by a foreign French worker no less! Dixit refines Apples to Apples scoring mechanism to give all the players a real role all the time. But truthfully, its the magic of Dixit's illustrations that make me doubt I'll ever play Apples to Apples again.

I know this will elicit some gasps of heresy, but to me, Domaine features a much tighter rule set. The fact that you simply either pay to use an action card or alternately sell one for cash makes for fairly quick turns and decision making. Moreover, it is a very easy matter to check the accuracy of scoring at any given time; in Lowenherz, the initial scoring of a domain is based on its initial established size, and there is really no way to keep track of or reference this detail if needed at a later time.

IMO, though, the main disadvantage of Lowenherz that caused me to give it the axe is that the negotiation phase can potentially drag out and dramatically slow the pace of the game (it was definitely a problem with my group). Since then I've played a really enjoyable round with others who approached the game with prior knowledge of this aspect and made efforts to conduct swift deals, but it really depends on the players and is not always an easily controlled variable.

Thus, I sent it to "pursue other opportunities."

Dominion is to Magic as methadone is to heroin. All the deck-building, card-chaining fun, without the savings-destroying, mana-trash accumulating need to acquire a competitive deck by buying out entire stores' supplies of random booster packs, or bidding your rent in auctions for now-discontinued, massively-overpowered cards. Sorry Magic; our bottom line just looks like night and day after having mothballed your department.

Fired

At first Dominion came into the office and was the hip fun guy who was original, cool, and could do his job really fast. Then he did it again and again and again and even got a few new shirts, a few new hairdos, a few new saying, but in the long run could only do one simple thing.

Now everyone knows how to do his job. And he is stale and monotonous.

Without expansions Dominion is quickly fired after the newness goes away. Expansions give Dominion a few months reprieve before it becomes stale again. In the long run it is a puzzle. Once you learn a few dominant strategies for a card set or a group of card sets, Dominion is just going through the motions for 10 minutes or so until you can reset the table and start over.

. . . fired Hive!

Well, kinda sorta. I bought Hive about a year ago, thinking my wife and I would play it when the weather turned nice and we were on our deck. And last summer, that did happen. And we both liked Hive OK.

But--after she beat me at Hive and it was time to say, "Let's play again," we both reached for the dominoes set I had nearby. We played two or three games of dominoes and had a lot more fun doing it.

My wife described Hive as "intriguing"--and we're both interested enough that we'll likely try it again someday. However, it has no chance element; hence it's too chesslike for casual play.

In contrast, dominoes is a practically perfect outdoor game. Nice luck-to-skill ratio, easy to learn, quick to set up and play, and scalable for most any number of players. There are also limitless variants to try.

Fired:

I saw all the hype: it’s the perfect 2-player/couples game blah blah blah. Hell, I even like the theme (such as it is). But reality is a harsh mistress: people who recommend it are doing so because they are trying to help gamers (mostly men) get their (mostly female) companions to play and there seems to be this idea that women just don’t like anything more challenging than Battleline. Now, honestly, there is nothing wrong with Lost Cities, but I have no problem bring a bit more complexity into my 2-play Kosmo games and Dragonheart fits that bill. Also, extra points for cute dragon token and better graphics.

Magic: The Gathering.

The thing I miss the most about playing MtG was all the time I spent building and tweaking decks.

The thing I hate the most about MtG is that it is a CCG and very costly to obtain a complete set of cards. My dislike of CCGs is so great that I have banned MtG and any other CCGs from my collection.

Dungeon Crawler, an expandable card game, provides the challenge of constructing 2 balanced decks, designed to be played against one another and does this without destroying my bank account.

I also like the fact that Dungeon Crawler can be played solo, so after constructing the decks, I can test them out immediately.

Do I think MtG is great? Yes, but I avoid it like I avoid drugs.

Dungeon Lords has completely replaced Agricola in our group in every way. The theme is more fun and better implemented, there is an option for much more direct player interaction, and the added puzzle/evilometer mechanics create deeper layers to your strategy.

At the same time, it hangs onto the worker placement, resource management, personal board planning elements that made Agricola fun in the first place.

Fired: Risk. I was never fond of Risk as an employee (he often did a lot of nothing on company time, and fostered negative attitudes in the workplace), but there was always somebody that wouldn't let me get rid of him.
I was ready to hire Dust on the strength of his resume alone, but decided to give him a trial employment just to get a feel for him. Plus, it would give a chance for some other shareholders to see what he had to offer us. Most of the board agrees (and even the few that remain unsure like the new guy well enough to give him the job); Risk... you're done. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.
