Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Fired...

Carcassonne

Carc is both the game that got me started playing board games as a hobby and one of the only games my wife and I both enjoy. To the latter point, though, she was starting to sour on it because she hates field scoring. Carc: The Discovery is the only version of the game that does away with that aspect entirely. I do like field scoring, but wasn't crazy about monasteries, and The Discovery also does away with those, so I decided to take a risk giving it a shot. I was afraid that only one of us would like it, and we might lose Carc too as common gaming ground - but we were close to that anyway. (We'd also both played H&G and both liked it less than original Carc.)

It turns out we both prefer The Discovery. It manages to be more tactical (which she likes) but also less random (which I like), and plays faster once you have the scoring rules down. The only major drawback I've encountered so far is that it doesn't support 6, but that's much less of an issue now than it was when my "collection" was just 2 or 3 games. (It also doesn't have the multitude of expansions available, but that's a blessing in disguise in some ways.)

The Plague fFired both

The tower is a humdrum mechanic that works only in straight, obvious lines.

The dragon is a beastie that will always move in the most obvious way, which is basically not interesting.

The plague is more unyielding to sudden bursty movement, and moves at a completely different, steady pace.

... fired Agricola.

"Sacrilege!", they cried... but hear me out.

Agricola has stymied several of our less zealous gamers. Our newbs / casual gamers really can't get behind playing a game that they ALWAYS get smoked at. It is too strategy heavy, too dependent on an understanding of Eurogaming principles, and too easy to get screwed over by a Eurogaming shark for their tastes.

However, in Castle Dice, the random elements of the cards and dice add a fun factor for the Monotony / Careers / Life crowd. This means it is going to get to the table more often for my group.

The light-hearted theming of this game also resonates better with most of my friends. I get my worker placement, castle / town building fix while my friends still have fun.

That being said, I LOVE Agricola and play it whenever I have the opportunity. However, this only happens to come in the presence of 2 other friends that live in another state.

Let the flogging begin... soblue

Fired: Itself.

We were already playing around with different board setups in 3-4 player games, thanks to the 5-6 player extension. After getting Seafarers, we were enthralled by the addition of water, boats, and a general "completing" of the intent of Settlers.

However, it soon took it's toll: Analysis Paralysis issues and extended victory requirements made a decent 45 minute game turn into a boring, often one-sided 90 minute snoozefest. The scenarios were too open-ended, and my best friend claims that Seafarers "ruined" Catan for him. I tend to agree, and would have preferred a more balanced, standardized game.

We have yet to try Catan: Cities & Knights, which I would look forward to if we ever end up purchasing it. But for now, I do not recommend Seafarers over the basic 19-hex game.

Fired Indigo.

Similarities:
- setting routes while trying to block your opponent.
- collecting gems

Cavum is much heavier of the two with some additional fantastic nuances.
- Ability to block other from using your routes (through placement of stations).
- Dynamite! Blowing up sections at the end of the round.
- Additional set collection mechanics to score bonus points.
- Gem market.

At $25, I can't understand why this game is not getting more attention. It is a fantastic gorgeous brain-burner!

To be fair, the king was hired first. But we'd heard Pillars was good, and gave it a shot part-time. So, you still gather different types of resource cubes to help build a large structure, only without the wonderful mechanics of building things that determine what actions are available, or the Provost, or the different favor tracks? Yeah. We thought Pillars might take *some* of Caylus's workload, but sadly it just lacks the skills.

Fired Checkers . . .

. . . when I was a kid. My dad taught me to play checkers, and I could never get the hang of it. He could always beat me pretty easily if he wanted to (but he was kind about it and did his best to help me learn). It got to where checkers was a frustrating game to me.

One day while we were playing, I asked him about chess. He said, "You have to be really smart to play chess. I don't know how to play." That inspired me: I really wanted to learn how to play chess.

Some time later, I got a neighbor kid to teach me. And I've been studying chess (via books and software) off and on for forty-odd years since.

The fact that I never caught on to checkers still bugs me sometimes, though. So I have a couple books on checkers and a Palm version of the game, and once in a blue moon I venture to buckle down and practice enough to finally get it. But it's still frustrating!

I know that if I stuck with it, I could manage to break through and become a decent novice checker player. But I'm usually more motivated to break through and get beyond being a novice at chess (which I still am).

I still have a great admiration for both games. If my dad were still alive, I'd say, "You have to be smart to play checkers too--to play it well, anyhow. And I don't know how to play it well."
