Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

El Grande

I find CitOW a lot more fun and a game I will play consistently over El Grande. I never warmed to El Grande, whereas CitOW has been riveting each play. They're both tactical games where you have to survive and adapt from turn to turn. I like the card play and the variable events and those moments of: "Why did you do that to me, you d*ck?"

Fired Checkers . . .

. . . when I was a kid. My dad taught me to play checkers, and I could never get the hang of it. He could always beat me pretty easily if he wanted to (but he was kind about it and did his best to help me learn). It got to where checkers was a frustrating game to me.

One day while we were playing, I asked him about chess. He said, "You have to be really smart to play chess. I don't know how to play." That inspired me: I really wanted to learn how to play chess.

Some time later, I got a neighbor kid to teach me. And I've been studying chess (via books and software) off and on for forty-odd years since.

The fact that I never caught on to checkers still bugs me sometimes, though. So I have a couple books on checkers and a Palm version of the game, and once in a blue moon I venture to buckle down and practice enough to finally get it. But it's still frustrating!

I know that if I stuck with it, I could manage to break through and become a decent novice checker player. But I'm usually more motivated to break through and get beyond being a novice at chess (which I still am).

I still have a great admiration for both games. If my dad were still alive, I'd say, "You have to be smart to play checkers too--to play it well, anyhow. And I don't know how to play it well."

Cold War replaced Twilight Struggle
Though overall TS integrates the entire conflict better, it does so at a cost in time and luck that is prohibitive to me. Cold War also introduces the spying aspect, which is a major part of the conflict. The battles are a lot more interesting than rolling a die for the outcome, and so the tactics are very refreshing as TS has no tactical decisions. While TS does have more history- this is a comparison of games - not history books or Documentaries. Just a way better game all around.

I know the latter is technically the expanded version of the former, but I picked it up because of the SdJ and because I had liked the card game. FIRED...

I loved The Hanging Gardens mechanics about covering cards and achieve a set collection, but I also played on october 2013 Columba and I think it shines over Din Li's game. The LUDOCOM production is absolutely great! The game includes more interaction with your opponents with the falcons tiles and the possibility of making clever connections between domesticated pigeons and the wild ones for scoring more points. This game also reminds me some moments of playing Knizia's Carcassonne: The Castle... but only a little. However Columba reminds me more strongly to The Hanging Gardens game... this is the reason for saving space on the shelf if you have both games and little room.

In my humble opinion both are quick and interesting area control games (but somewhat redundant).
