Hey there -- I thought I'd make a 2009 version of my Geelkist where we all brag about our favorite thrift finds of the year (the 2008 version is here).

Remember, this isn't necessarily the most expensive thing you found (but it might be) -- if you're excited about getting that copy of Disney Trivial Pursuit, tell us!

Pickings were slim this year for me, but I got another copy of Survive! I ended up giving it to a friend who was very excited to get it.

It appears that Husker Du was the gold medalist this year. Rebound was played a couple of times, and some Monopoly game (which I think became the Express version) hasn't been played yet. But mostly, they were probably stinkers.

Even though if feels dry all year, I did not do too bad in 2009.

Some of my best finds are:

Drakon (third edition)
Atlantic Star
Arkadia
Hybrid
Return of the Heroes
Hansa
Shogi
GiftTRAP
Qwirkle
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit
Wits & Wagers
Bazaar (3M)
Fireball Island
HeroQuest (In SHRINK, baby!!!)
Daytona 500
Star Wars Miniatures
Power Grid

It was between this and Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit. But I have to go with Fireball Island for sheer Geekness.

I never did get a FOTW, though.

It's hard to say exactly, but I'll go with this. In general, I find my favorite finds are Eurogames that always seem so so out of place at a thrift store. Any of these would qualify

Catan
If Wishes Were Fishes!
Cloud 9 (FX Schmid edition)

that or the non-Euro Euro I'd wanted to get...
Eurorails

Edit: I took out Café International as I'd missed that whole "2009" business. I found that one 2 or 3 years ago.
Edit: Added Cloud 9 as I found that this year.

Ooh Decisions, Decisions....This year was a good thrift year for me. There were 3 finds that stand above all others for me.

#3 Acquire, in the blue bookshelf edition with the plastic tiles.
#2 Loopin' Louie...Wow, this was a surprise hit with all of my family and friends. I had seen this mentioned on the geek, but didn't see the appeal, until we played it.

#1 Would have to be Superplexus...Technically Outside the Scope of BGG, a rolling ball puzzle (think a three dimensional version of Labyrinth). My wife and I had been looking had been looking for this, after a friend showed us one, for years. Overly expensive on Ebay, I found my Superplexus this year a block from my house, at a yard sale for 50 cents.

My recent find of Space Hulk (which was also a FOTW) tops the list, but also rans include two Samurai Swords, Fortress America, If Fishes were Wishes, Bohnanza, a couple of Settlers of Catan and a Cities and Knights that was unplayed (and I later regifted to a friend who lacked it). And I can't not mention Loopin' Louie which I found on Dec 24th and gifted to my two nephews who played my copy anytime they were at my home.

Before I knew of the thrifting guild, I had one "find" that is still a bit unbelievable. A few years ago a member of a gameslist I am on was cleaning out some games and asked if anyone wanted some older Knizia games, and that the one with the best response would get the games. Now, I had a goodly amount of Reiner's games already and quite a few of them signed, plus, I've actually had Reiner at my home for BBQ prior to the 2003 KublaCon. Having stated so, the owner of the games said I was the one and we arranged for pickup at a local gamenight. I arrived and he showed me the games.

Diabolo
Catena
Complica
Prisma
Pyramido

I was really taken aback, I had not see nor even heard of these games at the time. When I asked how much, he told me there was no price, he was just looking for them to have a good home. I insisted he take something, but he said no again. I was dumbfounded.

I take them to game conventions and I make sure they are available for play during KniziaThon at KublaCon. People think I'm nuts to do so, but as they didn't cost me anything, even if I lost them, I would still have had the pleasure of playing them...

This past KublaCon (May 2009) Reiner was once again in attendance, and I had him sign the inside cover of Pyramido. I sent an email to the person who had given me the games to let him know they were still in use and that I had Reiner sign Pyramido. He was quite pleased to know they were indeed in a good home...

While not the best or the first game I found this year. It was very early in my travels. Alot of firsts for me.

First game worth over 50 bucks
First in shrink find
First game I ever traded

I felt so acomplished when I pulled this outta that thrift store for 5 bucks. I called a few friends to brag. I was felling really great. But then it sat on a shelf for a long time. Till just before Thanksgiving I was feelign the itch for new games, but didn't the the cash. So this game went out in a trade (with some cash) and netted me Cash and Guns, Yakuza, Agricola, Z-Deck and Shazamm!

Okay, I looked through all my posts for the year, and while I had some decent finds, it wasn't a great year for games. Probably the two games I was most excited to find were Gettysburg (125th Anniversary edition) and a nicer copy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game. But thinking back, I suspect that what excited me most this year (barring Pyrex, which is ALWAYS exciting), was a nice hardback copy of Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August with the dj. I'd been hoping to thrift a copy of the book for years, and this is a great copy, even if it is BOMC. Here's a dj similar to mine, except that mine was a BOMC edition dated 1962, the original year of publication, instead of a 25th-anniversary Pulitzer edition.

I think I'll say Jungle Speed: The Extreme Expansion because it was such an utterly unusual find. Still in shrink wrap. I have no idea how it would have arrived waiting to be bought at the Value Village.

So of course, I got the base game for Christmas and once I play it a few more times, I'll add the extension cards.

Other notables:
Bazaar . My wife loves this one.
Tumblin-Dice Jr. . Huge box. Now I need to find the original.

Nearly all of my games are thrifted.

I was pleased to find a number of 3M games this year, including Acquire and Bazaar at a store while out of town on a business trip. I also found Scotland Yard, Amazing Labyrinth, and Can't Stop at various yard sales and other thrifting opportunities.

My best find, however, has to be Boggle Deluxe over Thanksgiving. After this $3 find sold for nearly $60 on eBay, I sold the $3 copy I thrifted last year for another $60.

I'd been searching for this Wild Wigout board game on-and-off for over twelve years.

Wild Wigout released only ten hand silk screen board games each designed by various underground artists and cartoonists (Daniel Clowes being the best known).

There were around 100 copies of each game made and this one cost me $25 and made me very very happy.

Believe it or not, but yeah...Cribbage. A brand new set I thrifted for $3.

That might sound crazy, but I've come to realize most of the thrift worthy stuff I find I end up selling to get something I want (usually Euros). I'd never played Cribbage before and was with a friend when I found it and she taught me to play when we left the store. I played a dozen times that first week, at least. I love this game and its one that I keep in my car.

I was also surprised to find out how many of my friends like it as well.

I found some good stuff like Rail Barons and Big Boggle that I sold for decent coin, but favorite thrift find 2009 has to be Cribbage.

I guess it has to be this one. In all these years I had only once spotted another copy, which I didn't buy because it was missing a lot of pieces. This complete copy was missing only a single Atlantean, I bought it 21st March for €3.
(Q: why is this rated so much lower than 'Survive!'?)

Another great find, based on value for money, was Advanced Civilization. It would be my #1 find if I owned the base game.

Other notable acquisitions:
- Aladdin's Dragons, free from Richard Breese at Essen2009. (Many thanks!)
- Tycoon, a Wolfgang Kramer game, my fav. designer.
- That's Life!, another Kramer.
- Can't Stop, I constantly saw these on the thrift lists but it was never to be mine... until last year.

I haven't thrifted as much as the year before. So 2009 was a less good year on the thrifty front.

Bring on 2010!
