I wanted to create something to learn about another BGG User or two or three, etc. I don't know if this will take off or not. But I figure I'll give it a try.

Have you ever wanted to teach people about your life? Your community? Your traditions/culture?
Ever wanted to learn about someone else? Where they are from? Learn about another culture?
Well now is you chance!

I was inspired by the Globe Clircling Meeple and the Global Geek Photo Album. But this is not the only thing that inspired this. One of my first BGG friends, Cate108 came about from a trade with my boyfriend, Mark. What did she want in trade for her game? No... it wasn't another game. She wanted to learn about Newfoundland! So we were sent on an adventure. Me and my boyfriend went out and took pictures of the city, and tried to find things we could send to her to give her a feel of Newfoundland. What did we send? A CD with lots of Newfie music, a CD with pictures and recipes and information on Newfoundland, some delicious Newfoundland syrup, etc. And now, I'd like to get that feeling back, and then pass it along again.

Now that my story is over, let's get on to the point of this Geeklist!

This GeekList was created to get allow users a chance to learn about another person. You will be required to send a package to the person who added an item above you and will receive a package from the person who posts below you.

If you have other questions, feel free to check out the discussion thread:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/481185

The Rules

d10-1 This is open to participants worldwide. What kind of culture trade would it be if I limited it to one particular area. That said, you decide where you ship your items by picking the person above you, you can get an idea where they live from their profile. So if you don't want to send half way across the world, you won't be required to.

d10-2 You can participate multiple times in this GeekList; however, please ensure you don't send multiple packages to the same person (let's get diversified and meet lots of different members). Please be fair and give others a chance to participate as well and keep your entries at least 5 people apart.

d10-3 All you need to do to sign-up is to click Add Item. You can put requests for specific types of items in your post or leave it up to the sender. Please note, the sender doesn't have to follow your requests, they will just be guidelines if they so choose to follow them. Once you've added an item, please GeekMail the person above you to get their address. Once someone posts below you, you should receive a GeekMail requesting your address to which you can pass on to get your package.

d10-4 You can send whatever you like in the package that represents you/your community/your traditions/your culture/etc. The only stipulation is that it revolves around you in some way. In fact, you don't have to spend money on any items or purchase anything for your target. Not everyone has a lot of money, and this is fine. You aren't even required to send a huge package to your target. Sometimes the best gift is something that simply takes time, so if you want to go out and take pictures of your community, write up some of your favourite recipes, etc. that is perfectly acceptable. The only requirement is that you send via snail-mail (yes, that might mean a trip to your local post office) something to your target that helps them to learn a little bit more about you and/or your community/culture. Of course, the more you send, the more they'll learn.

d10-5 When you receive your item, it'd be great if you could come back to this GeekList and edit your entry just to give us an idea of what you received. You don't need to go into great detail, but let us know you got the items.

d10-6 And that's all. I don't want to bog this down with rule after rule. Be fair, be friendly. And give yourself a chance to get out there and tell someone a little bit about you, while learning a little bit about someone else.

And for those wondering... I did clear this with Aldie first. So... let's get on with learning about each other.

It's here! It's here! It's here!

We were making dinner today (that's lunch for you mainlanders) when we heard a knock upstairs. Mark ran up to try and catch the mailman before he left. He didn't make it; but the mailman had made his way around the house and came down to the basement.

I went to the door expecting to be given a package for Mark and then head back in the house. Figuring I'd only be a minute I was wearing a tank top and pj pants. Boy was that a mistake. When I open the door I see the package says Daisy Manning. What?! I'm not expecting any games. Oh! Yeah! Culture trade! Yay! I know it's from Cate at this point. How much do I want to run in the house with the package and rip into it? I was so excited. But I wouldn't be able to rip into it right away.

We have a new mailman. It must have been his first day. He didn't know how to work his scanner-machine. So there I was standing shivering with the door open. Just to give you an idea on temperature; we have snow & frost on the ground (it was -12 degrees Celsius today). Boy was it a bad idea to go out to get mail in just a tank top. I was frozen. It took him at least 5 minutes to get the package all scanned and sorted out. Lesson learned: always answer the door in a sweater.

But when he was done, I had my chance. I ran in the house with the box and started to rip into it. Mark knew what it was. I was super excited. I kept telling him how awesome each and every item I pulled out of the box was. He thought they were really awesome too. So... I bet you are wondering... What did I get?

First things I pulled out were the CDs. A CD that was played at Cate's grad, and was signed to her mom! Wow! I can't wait to listen to it.

Next came the books. A book with a d20 on it?! What? They make those? Then I read the title "Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks". Wow! It's a totally awesome book for BGG! And written by an author in Milwaukee! Cate, I'm jealous!

Next I pull out a jar. I look at the color and it doesn't seem like anything familiar. I turn it over... Cranberry Mustard? They make that?! You learn something new everyday.

Out next is the BBQ sauce. I have to say when I first went to grab it I thought it was a bottle of Ketchup. When I took it out I showed it to Mark. He's been telling me all day how much he wants to try it. I'm sure we'll try this awesome sauce soon.

Next was a small jar of spices. Pizza seasoning. I opened it and gave it a sniff. It's got a great smell. Considering we might have pizza tonight for supper, I just might have to give this a try.

Next came the beer mug. Don't worry about not sending actual beer Cate. The mug is absolutely gorgeous! I remember sending you the screech, I was nervous too. I'm glad it made it to you though.

Out next came the Chicago DVD. Now, you might think... Chicago -> Milwaukee, huh? And sorry that the picture is a little blurry, but my cat decided he wanted to check out the Wisconsin goodies. But as Cate let me know, Al Capone and other mobsters would vacation in Wisconsin. So that's where the connection comes in. I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time I watch this movie.

Along with the movie came some Milwaukee magazines. I have lots of reading to do!

Oh, but that's not all the reading I have to do. I got Newspapers from Milwaukee. And even a humorous newspaper started by some Milwaukee folks! I've already had a chance to look at some of the stories. One thing I noticed in the onion was the Savage Love column. Our alt newspaper features these columns as well. That gave me a smile.

Included was also a copy of The Creature That Ate Sheboygan. A game, I wasn't expecting to get a game with it. And it's great to know the link between this game and Milwaukee!

And also a then and now of Milwaukee!

Even Charlie (my cat) liked it!

Thanks so much Cate.

kiss

You've piqued my interest, and I'd love to visit Milwaukee and see the sights for myself. Now, to convince Mark we need to visit!

It is only fitting that I return the wonderful favor that you and Mark gave to me. I LOVE MY NEWFY (spelling?) BOX! Now I will send you something special from my neck of the woods.

--------------------------------------------

I received my package a couple of months ago. I apologize for my tardiness in posting this report. The package had way too much goodness to be contained in one photograph... so here are three!

My package was from Corvallis, Oregon and was kindly sent by:

Eric Walkingshaw
United States

mbmbmbmbmb

Eric's name is very interesting to us cheeseheads because there is a city that touches Milwaukee called Waukesha. I wonder if there is any connection to his last name?

I confess that my favorite part of this package was the wonderful letter. It was several pages long. It described each of the items in vivid detail and gave me the flavor of living in Oregon. The jams are homemade (from fruit from a friend's garden, no less!) and they have made a wonder additions to my breakfasts. As did the Oregon Chai tea (my favorite form of tea - Unlike all of the Pacific Northwest, I am not a coffee drinker). My cats were remembered in this package and snatched the mice away shortly after I took this photo. Also in this photo is a handmade kitty fridge magnet (from Many Hands Trading) and a Oregon State University bracelet.

In this picture we see a Seattle Mariners Ichiro Suzuki jersey and cap. I am not a small woman so the childrens-sized jersey did not fit me but the cap does. I have been wearing the cap around town. It makes it easy to recognize the Seattle folks here in Milwaukee because they stop and ask me where I got it (and where can they get one). The jersey went to a fellow female Wisconsin BGGer who moved back here from Seattle and NEEDED THAT JERSEY! Apparently Ichi inspires the fans!

The power bar was a yummy chocolate and coconut concoction. Another one of my favorite items was the bracelet of made with recycled paper beads. The artists are in Kenya and Uganda.

Eric sent the game Masquerade as an apology for being late. Since we had no deadline, it was impossible to be late but he is very sweet to worry about such things.

I loved the post cards particularly the squirrel one (Squirrel Appreciation Day for the Chintimini Wildlife Center! Yay!). I am delighted to report that I have been to Powell's Books! What a wonderful book shop! The included book is great, I have already learned about Petteia.

The CD had both music and pictures on it. The music was by a band called Greenlander. The photos included pictures of Corvallis, Portland, Garibaldi (the beach and home of crab races), friends, family, and kitties!

In the letter, Eric said that he traveled to Madison, WI to see if the PhD program was a good fit for him. Hey, that is where I got my PhD in Mass Communication.

Overall, I am delighted by the package. I forgot to add the McMenamins menus and the map to the picture (sorry). But I read them over and they sound like micro-brewerys (a topic that is dear to the heart of Wisconsinites).

Here are some pictures: One of our intrepid BGGer and his folks (geocaching, no less), One of him with a voodoo donut (don't touch it, it's evil!), and the Oregon coastline. I will let you figure out which picture is which:

Corvallis, Oregon probably isn't the most exotic sounding place in the world, but it's a neat little town with some character and a great place to live.

I'll try to put together a package that gives you a feel for it, and I'll get my wife Allison involved, because she is awesome at this sort of thing. Unfortunately, it's not blueberry season, so I can't send you 10 pounds of blueberries... nor can I send beer through the mail (though in Wisconsin, you probably have enough of that already!)... but I'll come up with something.

I'm from Finland, first one from the Europe, I hope. I think I can come up with pretty nice package about me and my culture... I hope that the one who's sending the package to me wouldn't be from europe, but rather from some more exotic country to me.

Thanks for this idea - this is just absolutely awesome!

Hey Miika...

I got my start in business consulting in Finland, so I consider it my pleasure to pick you.

I am a clinical psychologist who lives in Los Angeles, California.

I do some therapy helping people who are unwell, but more than that....most of my work is in the reality television business.

I consult to producers and to network television lawyers here in star studded L.A.

More to follow.

I am really interested in meeting the following kind of person to follow me:

Someone who has massively changed their lives in a real left turn kind of way. Someone with a real profound epiphany. Maybe you changed your locale, your situation, ..kicked a habit....whatever....you don't need to go into your life changing moment if you don't want to.

Your package could be anything....just have fun!

Hello from the Bahstahn burbs! From historic Watertown, "the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution", as it calls itself, where Paul Revere HIMSELF... er... well, he had family there, and... he spent some time here evading the British regulars...

...did I mention I originally came here from San Francisco? No? Well, I still haven't gotten used to the accents yet and it's been at least a couple of years.

Nevertheless, there's some cool natural beauty and colonial architecture around this town. I mean, after all, this is the birthplace of the Boston Cream Pie, and it's very very hard to go wrong combining cake and custard.

As for me, I like --

1. Interesting decks of playing cards, preferably from something odd in your area or beautiful.
2. Favorite dessert recipes. I'm kind of a pastry chef at home, particularly with breakfast items that weigh in at maybe 3000000 calories, like a Dutch apple pancake.
3. Photographs.
4. Cheesy ephemera. I'll leave it up to you to determine what that means.

What an awesome idea! And I'm glad you posted on the BGG Birthday Card Exchange thread or I wouldn't have seen this.

I'm from Niagara Falls, technically, though if asked I usually say I'm from Buffalo. Close enough, and it avoids the whole "Niagara Falls Canada?" confusion.

I love to travel and see new places, though I don't get to do this as often as I like (who does really). I'm happy with anything anyone wants to send, but if you would like specifics, I'm particularly interested in history or architecture, parks and scenic views (postcards are great), sweets and really cheesy touristy snowdomes (the cheap plastic ones).

Ok, time to get some representation from another continent involved in this geeklist. Greetings from the land down under.

Cutural Report: Pacific Northwest
I was very excited when my Culture trade package arrived this week. Matt had compiled a very interesting combination of items to describe Stanwood and the larger Washington state. The following provides a brief insight into the contents of his package.

Books, DVDs and a rubber ducky
I'm enjoying watching one of these DVDs on my other monitor as I type this entry. Certainly a beautiful part of the US. Will look forward to sitting down and reading both books.

What's with the rubber ducky? I believe he is an escapee from the Arlington Duck Dash.

Brochures
So many things to do! I could easily spend a holiday exploring Washington. Mt St.Helens would be a must see, but there seem to be plenty of other interesting sights and events.

Photos
Matt included a number of photos he had taken of his local area and had kindly provided a description on the back. My favourites included the gigantic clam (10lbs...), Deception pass bridge and sunset over fishermans bay.

T-Shirts
T-shirts from Matt's work. I'm sure my nieces and nephew can grow into these.

Backpack and ball
My 2yr old nephew is visiting next week. He will have a LOT of fun with what I am sure will become 'his' ball. I gave him Gulo Gulo for xmas so I think he qualifies to join the geek squad.

Big thanks to Matt for providing an excellent insight into the Pacific Northwest and all it has to offer.

Can't wait to read the books and really love the book of slang. The pictures in your note were great and made me really want to visit. I want to check out the bookstore you mentioned. The chocolate was amazing and was very good. I almost threw away the coin until I double checked the bag. Thanks for all the items Eric.

I went to Seattle with work for a few weeks. Everyone warned me how terrible the weather was there. I can tell you now that if you know the weather in Seattle you know the weather in Ireland. It rains a lot, it's not the end of the world. =)

Anyway, I'm sure I can round up a bunch of reading material. There must be something left from before the land of saints and scholars turned in to the land of brown envelopes and financial mismanagement.

Love the GeekList! What a great idea. I'll send some American Southwest something along. I'll have to see what I can find that will be of interest.cool

To the poster below, anything at all would be great! My kids love learning about other cultures (especially from outside the US), so this can be a fun learning experience for them (and their parents).

Sounds like an interesting place to live. I'll try to send you some interesting things from here.

Anything special you are interested in (besides gaming)?

I just read your amazing GeekList. Very interesting and educational. Sounds like you have a great family.

For me, anything will be fun to receive.

{Update 2010-02-28}

I received a wonderful package from Erik, including a detailed explanation of each item. In addition, Erik and I have exchanged several GeekMails regarding topics of mutual interest and notes about the differences and similarities between our cultures. This has been a very interesting and satisfying project. Thanks very much to Daezee for creating this activity.

Erik made a great choice of items to represent the Netherlands. He also had checked my BGG profile and discovered that I enjoy cooking. So, he included an excellent cookbook (with recipes in both Dutch and English), some Stroopwafels (which I look forward to tasting soon), and some unbelievably delicious candy called Schoolkrijt (the pieces look like and feel like chalkboard chalk, but have a fantastic licorice flavor). I intend to try to locate an American source for more of this candy (or import it if I have to). laugh

The calendar displays some beautiful photos of the Netherlands, and I certainly will enjoy learning more about the Dutch language from the phrasebook. I got a laugh from the balloons (in the Netherlands flag colors of red, white, and blue, plus the ‘national’ color of orange, as seen often in the Winter Olympics). I found that combination of colors familiar, as our Denver Broncos NFL team colors are blue and orange.

Finally, I could not imagine why I was hearing a bell sound as I was opening the package. It was a very high-quality bicycle bell, representing the huge number of bikes in use in the Netherlands! In a GeekMail, Erik pointed me to some online photos of an astounding number of parked bicycles. It looked far worse than our big shopping mall parking lots full of cars. I cannot imagine trying to remember where one specific bike would have been parked in those massive lots.

Erik’s explanation of these items was excellent, and we have traded some more mail regarding the package. We probably will continue to write about mutual topics of interest, such as history, language, and computing, as we find we have much in common regarding these things.

Thank you so much, Erik, for the excellent package!

I found an online source for that delicious licorice (and other Dutch items) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- Dutch Sweets. If you like licorice, you've got to try this!

In that case you can expect something from the (so far underrepresented) Netherlands. I'll try to find something else than tulips, clogs or drugs to send.

I'm interested in any culture that's not West-European.

I like the idea of this. Seems a bit like the "swap packages" my fiancee always gets from her swap friends on Revelry.com (knitting geek).

A big part of "my"" culture is that I play boardgames. Not very unique among this group. I grew up very suburban Chicago, which means quintessential Chicago foods (Brats, Chicago Style Hotdog, Chicago Style Pizza) Nothing that would go well in a package, sprawl, Traffic, Culturally Beigeish.

Went to College in state at The University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign, and set down roots.

I guess Im a little lost right now, but want to see what happens as it might be kinda fun.

Hello Darren, I'm from central Washington (the desert of Washington), but I recently moved here from the Midwest, so my culture has changed a bit in the last year. But I am sure I can come up with a nice package of things to represent myself. Have a great day!
