So, how do you sort your game shelves?

I have several IKEA shelves that wrap my den that serve a duel purpose for my games and toy storage. All of my games are on the upper levels and from left to right are generally sorted in game weight. It starts with kids games mixed in with party games then goes to family games to quick 2-player and abstracts to medium strategy games and then finally to heavier strategy games with a few exceptions for size.

After the first few hundred, you really have to go Alphabetical to find anything.

BUT, minis games are a seperate grouping, as are collecty component games and "family style/casual" games are seperated (and alphabetized within) for when non-gamers want to play without being overwhelmed.

I also have one shelf dedicated to two-player games.

Ex: All my gamers stuff is put on a shelf, all ASL goes on two shelves. Everything else is pretty much by size, Axis and Allies games are all together, risk godstorm, 2210 ad, vegas showdown all stack nicely on each other and so on and so forth.

What #11 said. By publisher first, then box size next.

Here is an older picture of about half of my collection. I really need to update this, along with the other half of the room, but my OCD is getting kinda embarrasing.

It inspired quite a debate when it was first posted, with various and sundry accusing me of being a game store. Obviously my accusers hadn't seen the pictures posted by my friend #11 above, or by Raiko the mad Estonian collector.

As for shelves, as has been discussed elsewhere, the ones you see in my pic are perfect for board games - the Expedit range. And they're not flimsy or bendy or Ikea-crap-tastic in any of their usual ways.

I sort games by size and then by theme. All of my 18XX games are together and high up on the shelf where the kids can't reach . All of my other train games are together where the size will work (Railways of the World + Union Pacific). All of my civilization themed games are together (7 Wonders, Sid Meier's Civ, etc.). Then the larger area control games are stacked (Wallenstein and Magnifico).

I will opt for box size over theme though.

Over the years, in an attempt to save space, I've developed the bad habit of chucking box inserts and stuffing expansions and other material into the original game box.

This does save space (which is good), and means it's easy for me to find all my expansions for, say, Arkham Horror, (which is also good). However, it also leads to me loosing track of what I do and do not own. This problem only gets worse as I get older and buy way more games than anyone should ever need.

Still, opening your copy of BattleLore that you haven't touched in two years to discover you already own BattleLore: Scottish Wars is a bit like finding $20 in an old coat pocket, so I don't mind too much.

My games are sorted by size (however they fit) generally, though they are also sorted by Play Frequency. I don't have much storage space, so games that are played less frequently tend to get stacked in the hard to reach places or places that require me to pull out other stacks to get to them.

this is a very old photo of my storage solution ( almost exactly a year back ). alot of the games have changed but the space hasnt. so the stacking is basically by box size if possible. if not then wherever else it fits !

i try to sell before i buy due to space constraint. so thats a little sad. but i have managed so far, though i did open up a space at another section (not in photo) by clearing away my old video games. but that section are for games i would like to trade/sell.

(sorry about the crummy-ish photo with way horrible lighting at the top)

My organization is a little bit of a mixed bag. Some things go where they'll fit (small expansion boxes near the middle, FFG coffin boxes in the upper left, too-large-for-a-cube games on top). Some things go where they'll be prominently displayed (Merchant of Venus and other fun old games, various other games I'm most excited about right now at eye level in the middle). Other than that, it's all semi-logical groupings and personal aesthetic preferences. Most of my Euros are grouped together on the left. Adventure games are clumped together at the right.

I double sort.

I have my games in two different rooms. I make sure that the first set of games people see are the games I actually like to play. All the rest is on the other side of a wall. I generally point that one out when people ask me whether I own a particular game ("Do you have Ticket to Ride? Settlers of Catan? Carcassonne?").

But after that broad distribution it is "However it fits".
