Many of us play a lot of games, and with the help of the Geek it is often easy to avoid the worst duds before buying. But I must say I rather rarely nowadays find a game I think is really good. A lot of games are ok, but few are great.

So, what was the latest game that made you go "Wow, this is great!"?

(Yes, I know, this list is very similiar to the "Best to you geeklists". I am bored and didn't feel like waiting ok?)

2 plays in with just 2 players and I am already loving this game! My wife wanted to play it the very next night after we had played it the first time. This can easily become our quick game to play after church every Sunday, and my buddies want to play it in our lunch time game group. It's just basically worker placement, and your workers are dice. Fabulous and WOW!

I got this from my Secret Santa. I was hoping to get maybe 3-4 plays out of it, but after 7-8 plays, my regular opponent & I still want to play it again, because there are still strategies we want to try. Every time I think I've figured out "in every game, you would always want to do thus-and-such," he comes up with some devious new move which proves me wrong. Not bad for a game with about as many units per side as Chess!

I was very pleasantly surprised at the depth of the mechanics. While I've only been able to play this two player I can see how the game would really shine with 3 or 4. Excellent trade-offs in the decisions to be made.

I just found this game. It's from 1934 and I haven't played it yet but I am amazed.

No dice, movement is based on wind direction displayed in each square of the map and controlled by changes in ship and wind direction.

Each side controls 3 ships, one Galleon carries the treasure. The goal of the game is for the Galleon to deliver its treasure to a safe port and of course the Privateers are trying to stop the Galleon and waylay the gold. The game play has interesting obstacles from calm areas to sandbanks and even high/low tide.

The map is vinyl and unrolls to play. There is ship to ship combat, and the ship integrity is determined by little wooden cubes (damage comes from combat, certain maneuvers and running aground):

Considering it was done in 1934 it makes me sit back in wonder.

Played my second game ever recently. It took four hours, and it came down the the absolute last card played. It was like "tug-o-war" the board game. Three hours of vicious tactical struggle.

I only just noticed this for the first time at a game store in December. I went to the store to buy something else, but as I was browsing, another customer saw me looking at Neuland and started telling me about it.

After much deliberation, I finally bought the other game, but I couldn't stop wondering if I'd made the wrong choice.

A couple weeks ago I saw Neuland on a trade list, and I jumped at the chance. We played our first game on Wednesday, and several in my group said they were impressed by several new mechanics.

Especially the variable turn order on the turn track, and the supply chain. Can't wait to try it again!

This was my first real train game. Purchased just before Christmas.

The Wow! factor was just as much for the game as for the whole genre. [And the army of geeks out there producing amazing maps]. Steam is beautifully produced and, with judicious choice of PnP maps, plays well from 2-4 players.

It has now inspired me to purchase Steam Barons and start eyeing-up 18xx games - although I doubt I'll find anyone to play those with.

A heady mix of mechanics that fit well with the theme. A brain burner in the typical Wallace vein, the only off-putting thing is the gameboard, but a minor one at that.

For me, it's been Louis XIV, hands down. Such a small game, such a simple rule set, such tough decisions and direct competition. This is a great little game that seems to play equally well with any number of players. Mr. Dorn is becoming one of my favorite designers. Goa and this game are just masterpieces IMHO.

This one didn't have a lot of rave reviews, so it stayed under my radar even though the period held my interest. A friend of mine picked it up for 2O euros at a bring and buy and now we're quite smitten with it. It gives a very good period flavour and produces quite realistic results (at least it did for us). This has just opened up the whole card driven genre for me.

This last year I played several games that made an OK first impression but then went on to really impress me with repeat plays; particularly Power Struggle and Hansa Teutonica.

Maria WOWED me from the first moment and with repeat plays has skyrocketed into my top 5, with strong possibility to become my favorite game period.

To be fair, it stands on the shoulders of Friedrich to some extent, yet it improves on its predecessor dramatically. I just can't get enough of this incredibly deep and tense game.

It has been quite a while since a game made me go WOW! like this one.

As soon as I lifted the lid I knew it was special, beautiful artwork on the cards and tiles, all the minis pre painted, very much my type of game. (I have since dipped the minis to bring out the detail and add some shading)
When playing the game I really feel for my characters as they navigate the tight confines of the catacombs, playing the same missions over and over never gets dull due to the random tile/card draws so no two games are exactly the same. Croc you Rock!!

1978 was a mixed year for me. I purchased OT and had it set up to play it but for some reason I didn't and ended up taking it down. For years I had some space limitations so I had it on the shelf for years. A few years ago I put up a corkboard wall in my game area and was able to play the campaign game recently. I was very impressed with it. A pretty good 30+ year old game. I hope Decision Games will reprint it but this time with larger printing on the counters. It was a strain for me to read them even with glasses.
