There are tons of expansions available for games and nowadays games often get expanded by one or more expansions. There are many kinds of good expansions, they may give you nice components, some tweaks to the rules that make the game a tad nicer to play, new scenarios that prolongen the life of the game, new armies to make the experience more interesting and there are expansions that really change the game for better.

Some of these expansions are cheap but still add much to the game, some of them might cost a lot, but still be worth buying. This GeekList is meant to aid people who are considering which expansions to buy - please add to the list expansions you feel give the most value for the money spent for it! And please, tell us why you think so.

And you are all welcome to tell your opinions on the ones aleready added - the view of the submitter is just one of the many!

This list is the pair of the GeekList: Expansions: Worst value for your money

Carcassonne has too damn many expansions and many of them really add nothing interesting to the game, but in my opinion this was definately worth the purchase. The goods gained from closing the city (no matter who owned it) added a new tactical aspect to the game, while keeping the scoring system balanced - I think that just 5 more points per kind would have made it too powerful, but now it's just the right. On the other hand the Baumeister (I guess it's "Builder in english edition) gives you new options to make things happen on the right time - but you'll have to carefully consider when to use it. I think that this expansions makes the base game more deep and a way better, thus it's definately worth it's price.

The Dunwich Horror is a really expensive expansions, but it makes the gaming experience extraordinary great. Any more exes to get here?

Seriously speaking, when the expansions costs almost as much as the base game, it really has to be good (especially if the base game isn't one of those 20€ games, but rather pricy, like Arham Horror). In this case I think this expansion just is - it incorporates a great novel to a great game, adds few nice mechanics and gives the base game a longer life with many new opponents and places. I'm not sure if any of the other AH expansions really match this one, but this gives good value for the (high-ish) price.

With this one I can't guarantee the objectivity of my view, as this expansion adds the battles my country was involved and even gives us some finnish troops... Seeing anything finnish in a board game is quite rare, so this makes EF even more special to me. But so far Eastern Front and the Air Pack have been the best too expansions for Memoir '44 and Air Pack is - in my opinion - too expensive to really be inculded to this list, while Eastern Front gives many interesting scenarios, few nice mechanics and a cool new army it really justifies the price tag.

If I had to hand back every expansion I've ever bought (and there are several expansions I wish I could return) and keep only one, this would be it.

Although I'm not a huge fan of co-op games, the additional roles, events, and variants in this package turn Pandemic from an only ok game to a good one.

This - sort of - customizable expansion really adds flavour to the base game. You decide which of the many minis you buy, and there's a lot of them, for each side. At a mere price of 7-10 Euros for each plane this is quite fair, since you get fully painted miniatures with decals and so much detail, it's just awesome!

Playing with those instead of the cards is great. Period!

I have actually rated Alhambra: The Treasure Chamber slightly higher than the base game. I did this because it revitalized my desire to play Alhambra when it was beginning to grow stale.

The 4 module system allows some customization of the game all within one expansion box. Both the Bazaars and Treasure Chests add new, different ways to score. The Master Builder cards give the game a little more grace. The Invaders, while my least favorite addition, can force you to think about focusing more on how you build your walls.

Unfortunately the addition of these modules will increase the length of the game, but not by much with experienced players. Might be a worthwhile enough expansion to just consider Alhambra: Big Box right from the get go.

The basic package includes some sketchy rules but the high quality plastic miniatures can provide the catalyst for dozens of home-brewed scenarios and variants.

The companion game New World Order, Axis & Allies Variant is another expansion that includes some superb figures.

Though expensive (more expensive than most 'base' games), this is a must have for any Starcraft fan!

The additions provide several game enhancing features to address some base/core game issues as well as provide a new level of variety to this great game.

Though expensive, the amount of components justifies the expense as they include a new slew of figures, new player mats and several sheets of hight quality token boards.

Things that were added include:
- New Leadership cards (the best change)
- "Brood War" units (as per the video game)
- Many new planets and the addition of scenarios
- A new defense token, new modules and buildings
- Other Tweaks and additions to the rules.

Simply a fantastic expansion!

I feel that I've really gotten my money's worth from this expansion. It's got an addition to the base game (Twilight of the 3rd Age), as well as 2 stand alone smaller scale tactical games, Gondor and Rohon (Battles of the 3rd Age). As with most FFG games, it's got tons of plastic miniatures as well as cardboard chits.

There's so much replayability packed into this box that I haven't even tried out the Battles games yet!

To Forge a Realm does what a great expansion should: it enhances the base game without dramatically altering it. It adds:

- Governor role cards. You get 3 cards to choose from at the beginning of the game. You get to keep one; some give a one-time bonus, some give an ongoing bonus throughout the game and others trigger at certain times during play.

- New buildings: the players get larger player mats with a couple of new building rows, and also get to draw 2 new building rows to place on your mat.

- Combat tokens: rather than rolling a die to see how many soldiers everyone gets during winter, players now start the game with 6 tokens (0,1,1,2,3,4) and choose which to spend each year. This improves my least favorite part of the base game.

- Event cards: I haven't owned this expansion for very long, and this is the only element I haven't played with yet. I know event cards are drawn at the start of each year, and have an ongoing effect throughout that year.

Kingsburg made a great first impression, then started to feel a bit stale. To Forge A Realm gave the game a shot in the arm and made me excited to play Kingsburg again.

Edit: Oh, and it can be had for $20 online.

To me, this is the only big box AH expansion that I'm always eager to play with and include everything from. With Dunwich and Kingsport, there are some individual elements that are great to add in, and it's always good to have more investigators and GOOs and all that stuff, but Innsmouth seems to be the best overall expansion. I love how the Deep Ones Rising track works, and the martial law in Innsmouth, and the Personal Story cards... It all seems very cohesive and worth using as a whole.

This may catch some flak because I know a lot of people have complained about Flying Frog splitting up their new LNOE offerings into three different packages for $24.95 MSRP each. But not considering the MSRP, you can get this for $16 online, and I think that this one in particular is definitely worth that price.

The barricades, survival tactics and unique items will be worth having in the game for the Heroes, and the grave weapons are a really great addition for the Zombies, adding more character and tactics for them (two areas in which the Zombie team was lacking, IMO). And the four scenarios included seem to be really cool ones (I've only played one so far) that make great use of the barricades, in particular. Moreso than Growing Hunger, the different elements included in this expansion are things that I expect to want to include in every game of LNOE from now on, and for that reason, I think this will be a great value for the price.

My first impressions/descriptions of Survival of the Fittest.
