I've finally gotten my two relatively-decent game designs onto BGG in downloadable form and am now curious about how many other BGG members have designs of their own listed here. Please add games of your creation to this list!

And "the other one." No, no, I really like this one too. Won the first Microgame Design Contest - I think the trophy was a toast rack.

Jesse Evans and I are both BGG members and this is our contribution. We are currently working on Asia Engulfed Jointly, and I am working on the Fast Action Battle Series, Volume I (Bulge & Sicily).

Hopefully both new titles will hit the GMT P500 list sometime in 2005.

The only fictional microgame of ritualistic gladiatorial air combat... <ahem>

Like Matt, I have amassed a pile of proto and unreleased homebrew games over the years. This is the only one which has had any sort of distribution, and the only reason it was designed was in response to the 1998 Microgame Design Contest. Since it's a neat little game, I'm glad that someone took the time to come up with the contest!

To reach out to a wider BGG audience, I am toying with some further streamlining to the components and mechanics (as time allows). Stay tuned!

Path of Pharaohs is free print and play game I've designed and made available for download at http://www.geocities.com/crosstowngames.

It is a card based game in which the "board" is made of cards. Each player is attempting to be the first pharaoh to build a pyramid at Alexandria by building pyramids throughout the Nile River valley. There are many obstacles which make this a not so easy task.

It's not the most famous FMG title (that would be Insecta) or the most advanced craftwork (Hard Vacuum) but I think Shapeshifters is the most innovative. Too bad it showed up just as WotC was about to turn the hobby upside down and shake it until the change fell out of its pockets.

Ironically, a game of this complexity level would now come in a $50 box crammed with plastic bits.

Powerful mages bid for control over the elements. Will you be the one who harnesses the power of the elemental dice? Can you control the awesome power of the five elements? A fast paced dice game of chance and pushing your luck.

Be the first to score 15 points. Take chances on your rolls, but be careful, other players will then have the opportunity to steal your points!

My first game, and part of a lineup that Tremorworks will be releasing in 2005. If everything goes as planned this should be available from our website and through a consolidator around June - July 2005

I count the start of this game design as watching the end of the Super Bowl in 2000. I'd been playing with a spreadsheet during dull commercials, and had entered the third kinematics equation (d=0.5*a*t^2) into a spreadsheet, finding out how far you'd travel at 1 g for N seconds...and discovered that at a little over 63 seconds you covered 10,000 meters.

A game scale was born, and I started playing with the idea, tinkering with it. There were a lot of places where it could've just died aborning. I'd played very few vector movement games, and came from SFB, so was comfortable with segmented movement....and it wasn't until I'd gotten deep into it that I realized that I'd solved the displacement problem for vector movement games.

3-D came later, after encountering Birds of Prey, by Tony Valle - Dr. Valle's PHAD was the original version of the AVID - there are some changes I made to make it easier to teach, and to make it work for vector movement rather than movement point allotments. My contribution to 3-D was the tilt blocks and stacking tiles and box minis (shown in the picture at right).

Eric Finley was the one who came up with the seeking weapon system, which allows for hundreds of missiles to be in flight, individually tracked, and never be on the map to clutter it. He also did the first pass on the final damage allocation system, and did a lot of tinkering and poking around. A lot of the simultaneous decision making in the game is the result of Eric and I hammering things out of the Sequence of Play.

I made this to be a light srategy game for my girlfriend and I to play.
It is for two players, and takes about 30 minutes.
You both play dogs trying to gain control of the lawn, and have to wee in strategic positions to win ownership of items on the lawn which will help you.

Download it for free (.pdf format, 153kb) here:

Carl and I just published our first set of four games which we're marketing in the New England area

This one is our 'grown up' game--Carl came up with the base concept in response to an argument about San Juan this time last year, and then we spent 9 months creating the Roman color and fine tuning the building powers.

Depending on how it's played, each card can be a building, an action, a material, gold or a roman citizen helping you out which makes for a LOT of strategic choices, and the games tend to be very different depending on which particular building powers come into play.

Find the maps, dig up the treasure and get it to safety while avoiding running into too many icebergs...or let someone else do the work searching while you grab a cannon and a grappling hook to steal the treasure off when they get it back onto their ship.

With a hidden map and changing wind this game plays out in many different ways--players can choose between exploring to find the maps or visiting ports around the edge of the board to buy improvements to their ships such as cannons, main-sails, telescopes and icebreakers.

Early on the interaction is light as each player explores the board, but it quickly picks up as the maps are discovered (and fought for) switching to an intense 'treasure run' as the player with the gold desperately tries to escape while everone else schemes to stop them.

Incidentally, we call this pacing an 'Evo start'--giving players time to learn the rules before the game heats up and serious decisions need to be made.

A foodfight without laundry.

Each food card has a special power or effect which comes into play when it is either hits someone or gets eaten. You can also stand in front of objects--if someone throws food at you and you dodge out of the way then the food hits the object instead and they get yelled at, forcing them to discard all their defences and eat a piece of food (whether they want to or not).

Many of the effects are instant which can make for some pretty involved turns which I love from a story telling perspective (e.g. I eat the Revolutionary Cupcakes making me throw all my food at other players; I hit you with the Strawberry Cream Cake which makes you drop all your food on yourself; you drop Assorted Truffles on yourself but duck, which means it hits the player to your left instead, which means that each player has to eat one piece of food...). Carl came up with a great event management system which maintains the mad-cap feel of this process while keeping some semblance of control over the game as a whole.

We struggleed with the ending until a few weeks ago when we added an extra card into the game (HIM--representing Jeeves, the Butler). Now any stray food threatens to hit Jeeves instead (or you can throw at him directly) and the game ends instantly when Jeeves is completely covered in food.

We played Splat! at Elliscon in Connecticut last weekend and sold two boxes of assorted games to the dealer table (Time Machine : www.nehobby.com) because of how much people were laughing as they played.
