pros: THE best prices in Toronto by a large distance, will special order most anything, good selection of card games (esp. ccg) and rpg if you like that sort of thing...

cons: small selection of boardgames (a couple dozen at a time perhaps), no website

I get all my games through them if I can, cuz they have the best prices.

I buy from Hairy Tarantula too, cuz they have more selection.

I'm thining of ordering from Jogo soon.

Sonja is right. I used to avoid 401 because they were a ccg only place, but they have definately added a large board game and rpg section - and their on-the-shelf prices beat anything I've seen (online or in-stores). If you can't wait for the Hairy-T sale days, then this is the place to go.

ex. Robo Rally is 49.99 cdn
heroclix boosters are $7.80 cdn
Zombies/MidEvil: $27

Obviously they make their money in moving volumes.

Their selection of board games doesn't compete with the likes of GameTrek, but they have most of the popular new euro stuff and the classics like Settlers are always available.

Their selection of games has improved dramatically since I originally added them to this list. While still not as extensive a selection as Hairy T, they've closed the selection gap, while maintaining lower prices....

The new face of MEEPLEMART online
Distillery District
Toronto, ON

www.Meeplemart.com is an online Canadian retailer that has been known for it's great pricing, but it has now been bought by a new owner in the same location, and is still offering boardgames at awesome prices. Even more exciting (for some) is he is now stocking of hard to find (in Canada) miniatures, terrain, and wargames at exceptionally low prices.

Another interesting first (as far as I know) is that he is offering to buy good condition USED BOARDGAMES for store credit - and is selling used games on his online store as well as the new product.Good news in these troubled financial times.

He is open to pickup options for those living in the Toronto area, or attending TABScons...(Toronto Area Boardgaming Society meetups)

I know the new owner since we belongs to the same local game group and I have bought new and used items (and traded in some) from him several times already.

always an adventure stepping into the store. It's absolutely amazing what you can find in the store, you really have to take it all in and then start looking at every nook and crany. Some real treasures indeed, I was surprised on more than several occasions by some of the games they have tucked away. :arrrh:

Definitely worth droppin by when you are downtown

This west-end sister store to Toronto's downtown Hairy Tarantula is starting to get more heavily into gaming.

(I chose Necromunda as the picture because they had a used copy in stock the last time I was in, and because they have more GW then other stuff right now, although there is now a few shelves of German Board Game stuff starting to take over!)

PROS: Carries almost every game imaginal from party games to grognard war games. German boardgames are always in stock and most medium press companies are visible. If they don't have it they will try to order it for you.

CONS: pricey. No online presence worth speaking of.

They also have a store in Bayview Village Mall at Bayview/Sheppard in Toronto, but the variety weighs heavier in the party games and puzzles at this uptown location.

This store also has a location in Ottawa (on Bank near Cooper), but I've found their nonchess selection has grown substantially since their early days. Lots of small-publisher niche games, a surprising number of 'European games' (particularly Days of Wonder and Rio Grande titles). Last time I was there I forced myself to choose between Trias, O Zoo le Mio, and Buyword... I chose Buyword, but was happy that I had the choices.

I had no idea these guys were non-profit. That's pretty amazing considering they have 3 stores running in 3 major Candian cities (Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa).

I guess if you want to keep chess alive in Canada, buy from these guys even if you pay full retail!

I can comment on the Ottawa location.

I was here just before Christmas. For anyone looking for chess related material, this is a great place. They have many sets available, covering all price lines, plus quite a large bookshelf full of books covering the topic. As another poster pointed out, the store is geared towards promoting chess, and the staff does a great job of it. They also run a chess club in Gatineau -- if you're interested, just ask behind the counter.

They also have other 'traditional' games, such as poker and dominoes. A small section towards the back holds GW minis, and some games for the younger folks are also present.

Most of one wall is devoted now to Euro-style games, with all the favourites in stock. The selection is quite good -- comparable to Fandom II, and at times, I'll find something on their shelf that has been sold out at Fandom for a while. Their prices are a bit higher than Fandom for the most part, which usually makes this my second choice for picking up games.

If you're looking for a French edition of a euro game, this is your best bet on the Ottawa side of the river.

Darn. You guys beat me to it. (adding this store that is.) (Hi, Eric!)

I've been a member of the Game Club for the past 3-4 years.

The Board Game club is Mondays, starting at 6 P.M. and running to around Midnight. It is held in their attached cafe where members can sit and play and order hot, freshly cooked food from Mary the Cook.

The really excellent thing about this club is that the store has a collection of around 800-1000 games available for club members to select and play. (That number is approximate because I don't even the store owners know how many games they have.)

I don't know if any other store has a comparable collection but would be interested in hearing about them from other GameStore/Club members.

Bayshore is the best in Hamilton. And I am hard pressed to find anything better in Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo, London, Downtown T.O., or Ottawa.

Go to the mountain location for board games, kids' games, hobby supplies. Go to the Westdale location for RPGs, model kits.

When you're there in Spring 2005, ask (in a caring way) if the owner Rose is recovered from her pneumonia. Thanks - I'm trying to freak her out with all the strangers knowing her current medical status...

I stumbled across the mountain location of Bayshore Hobbies in Hamilton by accident on a Friday evening. Very helpful and friendly staff, and I was impressed by their prices and selection. There are several games that I couldn't obtain in local stores ("Camelot Legends" and "Hera & Zeus"), and they surprised me by digging up both of them from their basement, at decent prices too! If what you are looking for isn't on the shelf, ask about it, because they may have it downstairs. I'll be back! Thanks Rose & staff!

My very own FLGS. Easily the best brick and mortar shop in London. Started out (as far back as my memory goes anyway) as a comic shop that sold a decent variety of RPGs as well. Over the last couple of years though they have begun to stock all manner of Euros and newer North American Games there.

PROS: Very helpful, very personable staff, great variey of stock from a whole bunch of publishers (Days of Wonder, Fantasy Flight, Hans Im Gluck, Rio Grande, Kosmos, Uberplay, Twilight Creations, SJG, and the like). Great customer service; Gord and Carol will custom order just about anything they can get their hands on with a respectable turnaround of but a week or two (I think the longest I've ever waited was four weeks for a French language item). Their prices are comparable to Jogo and they have a great (for geeks) "10th Game Free" card (Just cashed mine in for Pirate's Cove!!).

After living in Kingston for four years, a game shop finally opened. Minotaur is still expanding its selection as it tries to find its market. Prices are reasonable, especially considering that they are the only game shop in town. They also carry a selection of non-game geeky stuff, like origami supplies and lego sets. The furniture (which is quite cool) is also available if you want it.

Games nights are also run on Sundays, from 5pm 'till 9pm. Furthermore, people are always welcome to play games in the front lounge whenever the store is open -- there's quite a large selection, and it's free.

Generally, Minotaur doesn't do online sales, though that may one day change.

And yes, I work there. Excellent people, myself notwithstanding.
