pros: THE best prices in Toronto by a large distance, will special order most anything, good selection of card games (esp. ccg) and rpg if you like that sort of thing...

cons: small selection of boardgames (a couple dozen at a time perhaps), no website

Sonja is right. I used to avoid 401 because they were a ccg only place, but they have definately added a large board game and rpg section - and their on-the-shelf prices beat anything I've seen (online or in-stores). If you can't wait for the Hairy-T sale days, then this is the place to go.

ex. Robo Rally is 49.99 cdn
heroclix boosters are $7.80 cdn
Zombies/MidEvil: $27

Obviously they make their money in moving volumes.

Their selection of board games doesn't compete with the likes of GameTrek, but they have most of the popular new euro stuff and the classics like Settlers are always available.

Their selection of games has improved dramatically since I originally added them to this list. While still not as extensive a selection as Hairy T, they've closed the selection gap, while maintaining lower prices....

The new face of MEEPLEMART online
Distillery District
Toronto, ON

www.Meeplemart.com is an online Canadian retailer that has been known for it's great pricing, but it has now been bought by a new owner in the same location, and is still offering boardgames at awesome prices. Even more exciting (for some) is he is now stocking of hard to find (in Canada) miniatures, terrain, and wargames at exceptionally low prices.

Another interesting first (as far as I know) is that he is offering to buy good condition USED BOARDGAMES for store credit - and is selling used games on his online store as well as the new product.Good news in these troubled financial times.

He is open to pickup options for those living in the Toronto area, or attending TABScons...(Toronto Area Boardgaming Society meetups)

I know the new owner since we belongs to the same local game group and I have bought new and used items (and traded in some) from him several times already.

They've since moved to 276 Carlaw Ave., Unit 204, and are open Tuesday and Thursday from 5-10 PM. That's pretty near to me so I'll swing by soon. Thursday nights are meet-ups for gaming, too.

Unfortunately for me, it looks like he may have gotten more into the miniatures / terrain side of things, but he still seems to have a good selection of board games.

This west-end sister store to Toronto's downtown Hairy Tarantula is starting to get more heavily into gaming.

(I chose Necromunda as the picture because they had a used copy in stock the last time I was in, and because they have more GW then other stuff right now, although there is now a few shelves of German Board Game stuff starting to take over!)

PROS: Carries almost every game imaginal from party games to grognard war games. German boardgames are always in stock and most medium press companies are visible. If they don't have it they will try to order it for you.

CONS: pricey. No online presence worth speaking of.

They also have a store in Bayview Village Mall at Bayview/Sheppard in Toronto, but the variety weighs heavier in the party games and puzzles at this uptown location.

In their defense, Game Trek is located at the base of the Royal York Hotel - probably get a lot of tourist money as well as having a more expensive commercial rent.

Still very pricey, though, but excellent stock and friendly staff.

They now have a large amount of "euro-style" games.

You will find things like Ticket to Ride, Settlers, and even some more obscure grognard stuff. Trouble is the prices are full list or higher.

This store also has a location in Ottawa (on Bank near Cooper), but I've found their nonchess selection has grown substantially since their early days. Lots of small-publisher niche games, a surprising number of 'European games' (particularly Days of Wonder and Rio Grande titles). Last time I was there I forced myself to choose between Trias, O Zoo le Mio, and Buyword... I chose Buyword, but was happy that I had the choices.

I can comment on the Ottawa location.

I was here just before Christmas. For anyone looking for chess related material, this is a great place. They have many sets available, covering all price lines, plus quite a large bookshelf full of books covering the topic. As another poster pointed out, the store is geared towards promoting chess, and the staff does a great job of it. They also run a chess club in Gatineau -- if you're interested, just ask behind the counter.

They also have other 'traditional' games, such as poker and dominoes. A small section towards the back holds GW minis, and some games for the younger folks are also present.

Most of one wall is devoted now to Euro-style games, with all the favourites in stock. The selection is quite good -- comparable to Fandom II, and at times, I'll find something on their shelf that has been sold out at Fandom for a while. Their prices are a bit higher than Fandom for the most part, which usually makes this my second choice for picking up games.

If you're looking for a French edition of a euro game, this is your best bet on the Ottawa side of the river.

I'm a newbie to the boardgaming world, and these folks have been the only retailer I've dealt with. Solid service, great prices, and if you live in the area you can arrange for pick-up and avoid the shipping charges. All round great experience and highly recommended. They also run a monthly games night in mississauga, but I have not had the chance to attend so unfortunately I can't comment on that yet. You can find them on facebook as well for news and updates.

This is my goto place. Can order anything, but has a huge selection in stock. He also has almost any game you can imagine available to "try before you buy". You can go in with some friends, grab one off the shelf and play.

Vince is also extremely knowledgeable and can describe the rules and give you a pretty objective assessment on a massive selection of games.

If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by. It's in the Bayfield mall.

This is my "walk around and check out the interesting titles out there" game store. I've also bought the majority of our games from this place. Since I'm only 30 minutes from Waterloo I usually compare between JJGames and GermanGames to see which has the better deal. The funny thing is they both have deals you just have to compare!

Excellent store and great service as well. Amazing prices too.

Darn. You guys beat me to it. (adding this store that is.) (Hi, Eric!)

I've been a member of the Game Club for the past 3-4 years.

The Board Game club is Mondays, starting at 6 P.M. and running to around Midnight. It is held in their attached cafe where members can sit and play and order hot, freshly cooked food from Mary the Cook.

The really excellent thing about this club is that the store has a collection of around 800-1000 games available for club members to select and play. (That number is approximate because I don't even the store owners know how many games they have.)

I don't know if any other store has a comparable collection but would be interested in hearing about them from other GameStore/Club members.

Bayshore is the best in Hamilton. And I am hard pressed to find anything better in Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo, London, Downtown T.O., or Ottawa.

Go to the mountain location for board games, kids' games, hobby supplies. Go to the Westdale location for RPGs, model kits.

When you're there in Spring 2005, ask (in a caring way) if the owner Rose is recovered from her pneumonia. Thanks - I'm trying to freak her out with all the strangers knowing her current medical status...

I stumbled across the mountain location of Bayshore Hobbies in Hamilton by accident on a Friday evening. Very helpful and friendly staff, and I was impressed by their prices and selection. There are several games that I couldn't obtain in local stores ("Camelot Legends" and "Hera & Zeus"), and they surprised me by digging up both of them from their basement, at decent prices too! If what you are looking for isn't on the shelf, ask about it, because they may have it downstairs. I'll be back! Thanks Rose & staff!

My Mom demands a Christmas list every year, and I usually put on a game or ten. Obviously she needed an idea of where to pick them up. I now live eight hours away from my home town, so I really had no clue, but a google search turned up these guys.

I finally got a chance to visit this store on a trip home. This is a very nice store with a good selection and a nice play area. I chatted with the fellow behind the counter, mostly to thank them for treating my Mom as well as they have for the last two Christmas seasons. Very friendly chap. I'll have to drop by more often when I'm back in town, if I can spare the time.

My very own FLGS. Easily the best brick and mortar shop in London. Started out (as far back as my memory goes anyway) as a comic shop that sold a decent variety of RPGs as well. Over the last couple of years though they have begun to stock all manner of Euros and newer North American Games there.

PROS: Very helpful, very personable staff, great variey of stock from a whole bunch of publishers (Days of Wonder, Fantasy Flight, Hans Im Gluck, Rio Grande, Kosmos, Uberplay, Twilight Creations, SJG, and the like). Great customer service; Gord and Carol will custom order just about anything they can get their hands on with a respectable turnaround of but a week or two (I think the longest I've ever waited was four weeks for a French language item). Their prices are comparable to Jogo and they have a great (for geeks) "10th Game Free" card (Just cashed mine in for Pirate's Cove!!).

CONS: Web presence is limited to a few items on offer at E-bay.

I just ordered a bunch of Christmas gifts from this site. Great prices, good stock and great shipping price.

I had been using Starlit Citadel for my needs but these prices are really comparable and the selection is better. The one thing I would like to see at this site are the promotional packages like on Starlit, where you can get a who series of games (i.e. all expansions) for one low price.

Minotaur Games and Gifts
165 Princess St. (at Montreal)
Kingston, ON

http://www.minotaurgifts.com (forums only)

After living in Kingston for four years, a game shop finally opened. Minotaur is still expanding its selection as it tries to find its market. Prices are reasonable, especially considering that they are the only game shop in town. They also carry a selection of non-game geeky stuff, like origami supplies and lego sets. The furniture (which is quite cool) is also available if you want it.

Minotaur has a games night once a week on Wednesday nights 6:30-9:30.

Games nights are also run on Sundays, from 5pm 'till 9pm. Furthermore, people are always welcome to play games in the front lounge whenever the store is open -- there's quite a large selection, and it's free.

Generally, Minotaur doesn't do online sales, though that may one day change.

And yes, I work there. Excellent people, myself notwithstanding.

Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend Minotaur as a source of games. They still have game nights twice a week, Wed and Sun, which are decent, but their current plan for making money seems to consist of not selling people things.

Their stock has declined precipitously, and their prices have risen above MSRP: not a good combination. One can no longer go into the store and assume they'll have whatever you were after.

In addition to comics and action figures, they carry a growing selection of games. The Nepean location has more board games than they have at Bank.

The last time I was in the Nepean location, they had tags on award winning board games. Most of the popular euro-style games were in stock.

Most of the store (both locations) are dominated by comics, trade paperbacks and action figures / toys. They also carry CCGs and miniatures.

To add to this, the Merivale (Nepean) location actual has an eclectic selection of wargames, some hardcore (like ASL). But they're piled two or three deep and impossible to see unless you're willing to dig and pull half the shelf off. But it's worth a trip for some good selection.

About: I work at this store and am proud to introduce it to you guys and gals who love games so much. Originally we opened as a action figure and collectible shop, but have in the last couple of years grown our board game sector quite rapidly. We specialize in tracking down hard to find items.

Pros: We have over 600 games in stock and can attempt to order anything you may not find in our stock. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Full listing of our board games on our website. Email us any inquiries you might have about our stock or anything and we will respond promptly.

Cons: Not the best prices, but not the worst either. The online stock listing is currently somewhat unorganized, with all items in a large "All Board Games" category and several other categories with links to niche games (eg. Train games, Horror Games, War Games, Party Games, but you can find your desired game with the search function or by manufacturer.

I look forward to your reviews.

Cheers,

-Gray

I just discovered this place, closeby in Barrhaven. There's also a Montreal location. They have a reasonably good selection of board games, the kind of stuff you would only otherwise find downtown at Fandom II. But the prices are quite low (Twilight Imperium, which is 99$ at most locales, was only 84$ here). Shipping isn't cheap, so it's worthwhile to visit the store. The staff were nice to talk to, and they ordered whatever they didn't have in stock.

I finally made my way down to this store yesterday. It's a nice, brightly lit store and the staff seems friendly. The store is predominately toys, with a rather large shelf dedicated to board games.

The selection was good -- comparable to Fandom II's downtown, but the prices seemed to be a bit high. For example, Battlelore was higher than even Strategy Games downtown, and Marco Polo (which I just picked up for a friend, so it's a good comparison point) was fully $5 more than what Fandom sold it for.

It may be a useful destination to find games not in stock at other stores. An interesting bit was that they had Carcassonne: The Discovery on the shelf -- ie, the English version. Every other shop in town, from what I've seen, had the German version only.

Since I live closer to downtown than to Barhaven, I'm not apt to return with any kind of frequency, but that's more of a fault of the distance to travel than the store itself.

Ah, very handy list as I plan to explore Canada (Ontario and Quebec) a bit in August. I'll be sure to check some stores when I'm nearby .
Thanks a lot!

While in Quebec City I stumbled across a new Store hidden on the top Floor of the Place Laurier Mall - Imaginaire. I wandered around with my jaw on the floor for about 45 minutes drooling at the selection and variety of Board Games. Their website looks pretty impressive too

Alas I dropped into Imaginaire just a few weeks ago, their quantity of games has already dropped and are becoming more and more focused as a "collectibles" store versus gaming store.
