Hello everyone, I'm looking for some good Science fiction and fantasy books to read. I've read the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series, the Dune series, part of the Ender's Game series and various other less known ones. I figured that this would be the best place to get recommendations so if you can think of any good books or series that you enjoyed I'd appreciate the reccomendations.

Thanks everyone!

-Peter

I am still waiting to get my hands on a copy, but everyone around me seems to love The Hunger Games. End of the world kind of stuff where "towns" have to fight each other to win food for their town.

On the lighter side, Fablehaven is a great series. It is geared more toward 12-14 year olds but I had a blast with these. Pure fantasy: Dragons, trolls, satyrs, etc.

Many people seem to like "A song of Ice and Fire", which this game is based on. I haven't read that, though, so instead I'll recommend:

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
The Assassin Books, Liveship Trader Books and Fool books by Robin Hobb

Best fantasy I ever read.

If you're OK with reading series (I tend to avoid them), George Martin's series which begins with A Game of Thrones is pretty damn compelling reading. A friend gave me the first three and I ripped thru them in no time flat and went out and bought the next two. Awaiting #6, and wishing Mr. Martin continued good health.

A series that started out really well, but then had a few bad books (between 2 and 4 depending on who you ask) is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The 11th and 12th books have been much better then the last few. Unfortunately Robert Jordan died before finishing the series, but it is being finished by Brandon Sanderson.

The Recluse series by L.E Modesitt Jr. are a very unique take on the whole fantasy thing. I look forward to each book and I have trouble explaining why. Very little happens in these book but at the same time what does happen manages to be meaningful and somehow feels logical. The detail in this book and the plotting are just great. IMHO

I just started reading the Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, and if the rest of the book is as good as the first 75 pages, then I am in for a real treat. So far, highly recommended. FYI, Robert Howard, the creator of the Conan stories, wrote Solomon Kane. And for all of you Tolkien lovers out there, he did it well before the Lord of the Rings came out. I truly believe Howard to be the source of the modern pulp icon.

C. S. Lewis' "Space Trilogy" is wonderful, if you don't mind a more philological / philosophical take on the sci-fi / fantasy genre [think Tolkien tenfold]. Out Of The Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength are the three books. [Warning: If you're anti-religious or anti-Christian, you might want to stay away. The influence is there, though not overt--certainly not as overt as Narnia--until certain parts of That Hideous Strength.]

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Harkens back to the golden age of fantasy. Many characters on desperate and disparate journeys. Slam-bang action. Political intrigues. Religious and heretical violence. Gods who walk the world and cause trouble. Epic battles. Moving scenes. Extaordinary heroism and heart wrenching tragedy. Humor. The best handling of the undead in anything I have yet seen. Also, there is some really wierd stuff like his shapeshifters and the way magic works.

The books are a thrill ride. I do not always know where they are headed, but I am glad I am aboard to see what unfolds.
