I did not know Tom very well. But I do know that Tom's passion in life was board games. He loved to play games, and play games very well, and the people who knew him best were those that he played games with.

Tom was very good at games. So good in fact that he was listed as the Boardgame Players association's top 25 players. He had earned over 500 laurels, which are earned for placing in the top places of competitive game tournaments. Tom knew the games that he played very well. If he had a game in his gaming suitcase, which he carried everywhere, it was likely he was better at it than you were.

I started this list in memory of Tom. I have included the few things I knew about him and listed some of the games I knew he loved. Hopefully those of you who knew him better can add some of your memories of playing games and spending time with Tom.

Tom was probably the gamer in our group who had played games the longest. He started playing games in the old Avalon Hill bookshelf days and had fond memories of titles such classic titles as Rail Baron, Diplomacy, History of the World and Acquire.

Tom says in his game comments,
"My favorite game a couple of decades ago before I discovered the next generation train game: Empire Builder. It's a long play time for what it is but I still like it."

Tom won the title of "World Champ" for this game at WBC in 2007.

This Geekbadge somewhat creeps me out.

Tom learned and played a lot of 18xx games. He could glance at a board situation and within minutes explain to someone how to make a player go bankrupt.

It's funny. It is a train game and all, but as we got some people to start playing 18xx more lately, Tom said he didn't really care for the game. Not enough auctioning and bidding for him I think.

Tom loved the Catan series, he really enjoyed games with negotiation. He says,

"Classic ground breaking, genre defining game. The random setup board mechanic that you now see in lots of games keeps it fresh. Not in my top 3 but I think it's in my top 5."

He won the tournament for this at Euroquest 2008.

There's an interesting story about his semi-final game where he got second place (and was able to move on to the final) when we come out ahead in the fifth tie-breaker. If I come across the link to it, I'll put it here.

I think we're talking about the same game. Based on the pictures on your website, I think it was you, Tom, my brother-in-law Steve, and I. He pulled out this old (loved) edition of the game. We played Ticket to Ride after, right?

The thing I remember about Tom is that there was this small subset of really classic games he'd like to play. I never really saw the competitive side, because he knew to be welcoming to new players. That isn't to say we wouldn't decimate you. I remember playing Lost Cities with him at the January RBS game day, and after beating me 112 to 7, he said "there are still two more rounds, and we keep score", pulling out his pad and pencil.

Obviously he loved sports too. I remember talking to him last summer about Trent Edward's potential with T.O. He also correctly predicted that they would not be a good match. Fancy that.

Tom liked auction games. Tom liked Knizia games. Tom therefore really liked this game.

"One of Knizia's best games. Multiple paths to victory. Cool double auction game mechanics."

I played this game in person and online with Tom.

Im pretty sure he at least doubled my score in those games.

Fortunately the game sustained very little damage from the event. I'm not sure Tom ever recovered, though...

The crayon rails series was definitely one of Tom's favorites. Here is a quote from his game comments on his profile;

"Perhaps my all time favorite. Certainly in my top 3. I'll play this anytime!"

Tom ran the event for this at WBC.

He won the title of "World Champ" in back to back years in 2004 and 2005.

Tom introduced this series to me and taught me how to play crayon rails, with a game of China Rails. This series has become one of my wife and I's favorite games as well, and I thank Tom for sharing his passion for this game with me and many others in our group. I look forward to teaching my daughter, who is now one month old, to play this game with us and when I do I'll remember Tom.

By the way, Tom absolutely destroyed me when I played this with him. He was great at this game.

I played this with Tom at NBW one year. He had just come off of a midnight shift and hadn't slept in over 24 hours. He started to fall asleep in between his turns. When it would come around to him again, we'd nudge him awake. Without pausing, he'd take his move and go back to sleep.

He crushed us.

I only just found out about Tom's death, and can't imagine Empire Builder at WBC without him. Tom succeeded me as WBC champ in 2004 (I came fourth in that final) and I remember how incredibly happy he was to win that game -- in fact, he said that winning Empire Builder at WBC was one of his greatest ambitions. I didn't make it to WBC in 2005 (I was at the World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow) but was delighted to hear that Tom won it a second time.

Tom was a great gamer and will be remembered by all of us..

This was one of Tom's favorite games;

"Knizia's best auction game, period end of story! More paths to victory and more granular than Hollywood Blockbuster/Traumfabrik or Medici. More of a 'pure auction' game than Amun-re or Hollywood Blockbuster/Traumfabrik. Deep strategy that few ever figure out entirely. One of my three all time favorites."

It was also one of Tom's best games. To any who claim that this game is random and lucky, I wish you would have had the opportunity to play this game with Tom.

I sat at four WBC final tables in Ra! with Tom, and I was always amazed at his ability to play so well and to seem effortless in doing so. He taught me a lot about the game I love so much, and I consider my victory over him at WBC in 2005 (we tied and I had the 16 sun to his 15 sun, the absolute narrowest possible margin of victory) to be one of the best moments in my gaming life. I'm really going to miss him.

If you wanted a chance of winning this at an RBS meet, you had to pull it out while Tom was off getting lunch or dinner.

He was like a cat if you mentioned Ra from across the room. his head would perk up and come wandering over.

I've played many game of this with Tom, and i think i only ever won once. I always seemed to play my poorest against him, but i generally attribute that to him forcing me to make the bad decisions

I'd forgotten this, but I *hammered* Tom in Ra about 2 months ago. I think Nels came in second. It might have been at BACSIM or the bar, I don't remember. This may have been the only time I've ever actually beaten him in it. I remember being very pleased that I'd gotten over the hump. He *really* loved to chance those last 5 or 6 draws versus the last few Ra's coming out.

Tom and I liked this game so much, we frequently played it 2 player. We thought it was elegant and fun 2er, contrary to the general consensus on the geek. I gradually got 'RAed Out' supplying him with practice for WBC, and when we stopped playing it every week with him his long successful streak came to an end. Well, that pretty much settled it, we didn't play RA with him any more

Tom was a master diplomat in games, but with his closest friends, he was a smug bastard. I will miss him, because he would take a ribbing as well as he gave, and he was really a lot of fun to game with.

I have a lot to add but 'nuff for here.

Finally this was another of Tom's favorites. He mentions a top 3 in his comments including empire builder and Ra, I THINK this was the other of the top 3 but I cant totally confirm that.

"An instant classic! After ~a half dozen Alan Moon attempts at a train game using little plastic train bits he finally gets it right."

Tom introduced many people in the Buffalo area to gaming through this game. But it's fair to say he never went easy on any of them. It was rare to see him lose this game even with all of the random elements.

Euroquest 2005 Champion.
5th highest WBC "laurelist"

I played this game once with Tom. He owned us.

That's about all I can really say about Tom. He loved games. He loved to play games. He was one of the best in the world at playing some of these games of ours. It is a shame he is gone. The gaming community is lessened with his absence. Rest in peace Tom.

I think I played at least 10 games of this with Tom. Back when I could make BACSIM on a regular basis, we'd always play TTR and Settlers (at Tom's suggestion) to close out the night. You knew he was going to destroy you at both but it was still fun to play.

I believe we had one major rule when tom came over our house to game: No TTR, in any form.

Tom was mysteriously good at this game. He had a knack for having route cards that let him build his trains in sections of the board no one was playing in. My wife and I just really didn't care for the game, and the fact that the outcome wasn't in doubt made this my least-played-with-tom game.

For the same reason, he stopped playing Age of Renassiance with me. That and you could only get 1 game of it played in 5 hours, whereas you could play RA about 12 times with our group. shake

Not that we ever did that. I think 3 in a row was our limit.

If it was not for Tom, I would not be the player I am today in TTR. When he played with me it was either him or me, sorry to say mostly me. He had the passion and smarts to get where he needed to go. I had played TTR with Tom a least 50 times. Because of my vast experience with Tom I went to origins and won one tournament and finished in the top 10 in the other, only because of Europe which we never played. Because of Tom's determination for no matter what whooping you at games, I was able to wait till the final day of the big TTR tournament to play game to earn the point, and I played the four games of TTR needed to play and finished first in each of them. Thank you Tom I will hold the fort down this year at origins.

I went up against Tom in this game twice at EuroQuest; once in 2007 and again in 2008. In 2007 it was in the final and while neither of us won I believe he came in a close second. I faced him again the following year in the third and final heat but I actually won that game (then went on to win the tourney). I knew he was a good player as I'd come up against him in other games, but after reading all these stories about how he normally crushed his TTR opponents I figure I did pretty well the one time I beat him. It's not often one has the pleasure of winning against such a well-regarded player.

You actually BEAT *TOM* AT TTR???????

Congrats, and thanks for sharing the memory.

Tom was an excellent Adel Verpflichtet player. I'm pretty sure he could even spell it.

He was part of the BPA PBEM tournament that's ongoing as I write. He was the highest qualifier for the semi-finals that will begin in a few days. It goes without saying that we'll all miss him as we play. The Iron Meeple was an extremely good player.meeple

Our prayers are with Tom's family and friends.

Tom was also a regular in the BPA's annual March Madness PBeM tournament.

He missed the first tournament in 2003-04, but played in the six tournaments after that. He had just been knocked out of this year's event by Don Greenwood just a few weeks ago.

Our little hoops world will miss Tom.

Tom was a good friend. Our door was always open to Tom, and when our daughter was born, we started calling him Uncle Tom... He loved coffee and chocolate, especially when he could get it at a bargain. He was "thrifty" but a generous friend. I'm still shocked and sad, so I don't have much humor to share at the moment.

But I will say that Tom wasnt all train games and randomness.
He was an excellent Scepter of Zavandor player and sometimes when it was just me, Nick and Tom (and sometimes JT and Chris) it was anyone's guess who might win. He loved the auction component in the game. It became a light hearted joke about who would get the irresistable Mask of Charisma.

RIP Tom.

I love scepter of Zavandor. the first time i played it was at a Bacsim meet, but Tom wasn't there that day. the second time I played it, was at an RBS meet, including Tom. I thought i had everfyone pretty well steamrolled, until Tom showed me the "Ha Ha, I'll just sell it all off, buy Opals and an extra Sentinel to end the game and kick all yer butts" maneuver.

part of the fun in playing against him was just to see such crafty things

Was introduced to the 3M original of this one by Tom in college. He loved the mechanic of the game and it was usually in the pile for a quick game back in the day.

Tom was an expert scrabble player too. The only time I got an edge was managing a win just past midnight on a new years eve gaming party. Though I remember touting my undefeated for the year in scrabble to him for a few weeks... till we got to get in some more games...

This was the last game I played with him. It was at the Rochester Boardgamers' meeting on January 16.

He caught on to the Settler similarities, but Tom, as usual never felt comfortable with a new game until he'd studied it.

And he kept dropping one of his deck of cards and claiming he was missing one.
We all kept pointing at his feet to show him he'd dropped it and he'd growl and pick it up.
He ended up liking the game though and I'm sure under better circumstances he would have wiped the floor with in future plays.

I first met Tom in 2005. i had just found the RBS group and had plans to go to Origin. we were doing some carpooling and one of them also needed some hotel space. i had a room for just my friend and myself, so Tom spent the weekend with us.

I learned very quickly that if i needed to find Tom, all i had to do was wander around the back corner of the boardgame area, where the train gaming was going on and I would find him. his Badge at Origins always identified him as "Traingamer Tom"

we had a great time, including chastising tom for some odd gastronomical choices

of course playing many games with him at RBS events came later, and i learned just how dangerous he could be.

Tom also was a Hockey Fan. Buffalo Sabres to be precise. about a year and a half ago he asked me to paint some NHL monopoly pieces and a giant pile of little metal trains. he had specific plans for the trains to have different colors to be used in various games. but he left me some leeway with the hockey pieces. i took a shot and said "should i do them in the Sabres' colors?" and his eyes lit right up. he wanted the classic colors of course and he loved the details on the uniforms of the 2 pieces that were actually players

he wound up giving me this cool dice tower thingy (called "the incredible patent picker move maker machine", though i have no idea what game it comes from) that rings a bell when you roll the dice, and the figures from a robot football game, because he thought i could use them in my Heroclix modding.

I was cleaning up the apartment thursday (early spring cleaning) and almost threw them out. Glad i didn't

I bought this game and played it exactly once, with Tom. My 'Geek comments about it right after playing were:

"You really have to be a negotiator and a shark in this game. In a 4 player game we played the winner had twice as much money as the second place player. The winner was also the one who started the most deals and became the boss on one or two others. You also have to be involved in as many deals as possible. It's too hard to accumulate the cards you need to do deals on your own (and defend them), the game ends by the time you can get close to having the right set of cards."

I don't have to tell you who won, as this was exactly Tom's kind of game. This was the game, or maybe it was playing this and other games with Tom, that made me realize how much auction and bidding games are not for me. He got this game for himself not long after and played it quite a few times, thanking me for introducing it to him.

Regardless of what was on the table, whenever I sat down with Tom I never expected to win. He was just that good and I was way out of his league. In four years of playing casually and sporadically with him, I might have won... once or twice.

Rest in peace, Tom. Your friends from Buffalo Boardgames Meetup will miss you.

This was a huge game from the proto-euro phase, where we were going to Baldy open gaming and started attending avaloncon. We played this often, several times with 7 or 8 people. There was bidding, including the kind tom and I like where you set yourself up to win a particular auction, and usually someone else did too.

I think we all liked the bits too. Little people, roooobotts, ring ore, etc.

I was somewhat sad when tom sold his copy, but it's my fault for never desktop publishing my own copy like i planned. I think in the end tom got serious value out of this game in all possible ways.

One of my very favorite games. I was delighted when I was able to play it 10 times in 2009. I never played it with Tom, but I'll bet he was a force at this game---it's just the kind of game he excelled at.

Heh, for the first Euroquest I attended with Tom, he told me he'd found a third roommate who was a postal worker.
The "going postal" inside joke was a theme for that con and the next one when you roomed with us again.

To this day, I have no idea if you actually are a postal worker or if it was just a joke Tom made up.

Tom and I did not play a lot of the same games, so my interaction with him was not as great as it could have been. In fact, he disliked some of the games I played so much that he would often leave early rather than play them.

Well, the last game I played with Tom was Small World. Going into it, he expressed extreme displeasure at playing a game with this theme. Once the game started however, he liked the mechanics and surprised me by diving into the theme with full geeky abandon. Soon, he and I were aligned in dispensing with tactics and just crushing those stupid, flying elves.

It was a surprising moment, since I expected him to hate the game, and one of my favorites from game night.

Nice tribute, Ryan.

I don't know the procedure but the admins will put a memorial geekbadge on Tom's profile; they'll need his year of birth, presumably 1958 or 1959.

No matter what game you wanted to discuss, Tom was ready to discuss the strategy, with passion and enjoyment. He was as friendly as they come, and as competitive as they come---a great combination.

In my mind, one of the greatest tributes to Tom (a self-confessed "Euroweenie") came from Rob Winslow, a wargamer from the same area of the country. In a post on ConsimWorld some time back, Rob said

Quote:
Tom may be a Euroweenie, but he's our Euroweenie!
