Stumbled across a few great walk-thrus, session reports & reviews of various "heavy" wargames recently on BGG.

I mean some truly high quality reviews and discussions of game sgtrategy, etc, : just check out the one on For the People. Wow.

Anyways, after I read the reviews/AARs/etc, I really wanted to play the game again (if I owned it) or immediately purchase the game if I didn't own it. Some of these high quality reviews/AARs are "negative" on the game, but, they still made me want the beast. Go figure.

Please feel free to add to the list.

Ditto. To be honest, this one has made me hesitate to play it like no other game. Not sure why, but one day I will give it a try since I am so curious about the subject.

This game and it's sibling The Rise of the Roman Republic: The Ancient World, Vol. 1 may be the next "monster" that I play.

The subject is of great interest and I enjoyed reading the rules. I suspect a campaign scenario would be a very, very consuming experience which sounds like a lot of fun.

It's not really a monster. Well, not in the smaller scenarios at least.

It is really good though. Highly recommended as a way of getting the feel of ancient armies marching and countermarching. I plan on playing the First Punic War itself soon (already delayed due to illness), so I'll be able to report on that soon.

I would expect with games that long that people would have a lot of play notes to keep things straight from week to week and that it wouldn't be too bad to try and translate those into a report. Maybe there's just too much to be able to wrap your head around and try to format at once?

I am new at this game and presently in Turn #1 of a PBEM game.

So far I am really enjoying it. In particular, I like the narrative of the game. I think that might be one of it's strongest appeals, at least for me, and reminds my of the great "story" Terrible Swift Sword: The Battle of Gettysburg would generate. Playing via PBEM only enhances this since there is plenty of time to follow what is going on.

I should note that a game with a strong narrative ranks high on my list of favourites and monster games are generally very good at delivering that very characteristic.

I had all 4, most of them "enhanced" with player aids (wasn't called pimping your game yet), and our group played this with 4-6 players at least a dozen times. Ping-pong table for Europe, side table for PG, played once a week so could leave set up, and typically took us a month to 6 weeks to play a full game.

Sidebar, but we discovered the game was "broken" (since that seems to be such an issue these days) as the Warsaw Pact had a turn 1 move, focusing their air to get Air Superiority, they could do a para/helo move through a gap in NATO lines that allowed at least 1/3, usually 1/2, of the NATO forces to be cut off and placed out of supply. Usually produced a WP win in 2-3 turns. We "adjusted" the starting hex of 1 2nd line NATO unit by 1 hex to prevent this and played many more games after that.

Great set, sold mine with all the bells/whistles when unemployed a few years ago, got a good price and had groceries for another month.

Ron

Some candidates to consider:

Imperium Romanum II(West End): Few scenarios are truly balanced, but the scale is epic.

Pacific War (VG): It's big, it's hopeless(for the Japanese) and it will take over your life. The campaign game ultimately doesn't work because the war just wasn't balanced. But the scenarios are very good and the system is an excellent simulation.

Someone already mentioned Empires in Arms, I would add War and Peace(AH) .Again it had a flawed campaign game, probably best with 4 players to offset the 'diplomacy' rules - but austria is going to take a beating every time.

Freedom in the Galaxy(SPI./AH) - an amazing and very ambitious game, albeit with a fatal balance flaw in the campaign game. Combination of personalities with military events is very unusual.

Empires of the Middle ages (SPI/Decision) - this is only a beast if you take on the epic scenario, which is 700 years of history in 5 year steps! It is probably the best example of risk control out there in that random events can easily wreck your position if you don't mitigate against it. And sometimes even if you do. Features a high degree of leader mortality. Europa Universalis is spiritually the continuation of this game into the age of exploration, with extra complexity.

Is that to say that the epic scenario has 240 turns?

No, "only" 140 turns.

There is a reason we call Wendell a "walking calculator"...

Is that to say that the epic scenario has 240 turns?

No, "only" 140 turns.

Doh! Nice math skills! No wonder my friend Jay always trashes me at Caylus.

Feel free to add to whenever someone stumbles across a beefy review/session report on a big honkin wargame; would be cool to keep this list current.

Some candidates to consider:

Empires of the Middle ages (SPI/Decision) - this is only a beast if you take on the epic scenario, which is 700 years of history in 5 year steps! It is probably the best example of risk control out there in that random events can easily wreck your position if you don't mitigate against it. And sometimes even if you do. Features a high degree of leader mortality. Europa Universalis is spiritually the continuation of this game into the age of exploration, with extra complexity.

BGG User Calandale has a video series on BGG on the campaign of this game, Empires of the Middle Ages. It is the SPI version. Truly amazing.
