Howdy.

Time for this month's installment of the "table" GL. April's list was rather interesting in that folks continued to contribute to it right up to the end of the month, which is a first I think (the list tends to subside after the first week or two). That was pretty cool IMHO. There was the usual assortment of new games and timeless classics, the later making me consider dragging out some of my oldies from their storage boxes.

Unfortunately, my gaming plans were interrupted halfway through April, so my hopes for my initial playing of "Washington's War" and "Barbarossa to Berlin" did not pan out. A gaming tragedy. Hopefully that can be corrected this month. My "Afrika" game with Bill (billyboy) is on hiatus also as contemplation ensues. We may call it a draw as it does not appear that either side can win (after Turn 23).

Regardless, please let us know what you are playing these days. Are you liking it? How did the game go?

Once again, this is a list by us, for us. A community list.

Just finished playing a game of this and really enjoyed it. The Russian's scrambled to create a defensive line while the victory point targets meant that the German side couldn't relax. Looking forward to playing again.

Pulled this one out last Thursday. Even though I didn't play it for quite a while, it was easy to get into the basic rules. Just love the emphasis on outmanouevering your opponent on this operational level ACW game.
Soloed 1st scenario "Battle at Cedar Mountain" and just set up the next one (I think this weekend will be an ACW weekend )

I'm amazed no one has added this yet.

The PuG Tourny is still going on right now on ACTS, and my games are both almost done. One I was the CP, the other the AP. In both games, the CP did very well, and my one AP opponent was crushed around turn 7 while my game as the AP I've hammering hard to survive. There's only one full turn left till the end, and it's definitely going to be crazy! The CP lines are all very brittle, while my AP forces are concentrated into strong spearheads. I probably can't get enough momentum to really achieve anything, but I'm going to try!

A friend and I played this on Saturday (without the naval expansion) a fine game but a very poor simulation.

The game ended on turn 5 because I as the republican had managed to cut the Nationals in 3 groups, each of one with less than 8 spaces. I suppose it was a case of being the first time for both but left a very weird sensation.

The game is simple and fun, but the fact that tries to balance things out with "what-if" cards, that the conexions can be somewhat unrealistic, and that the game goals are too generic makes this nothing near a simulation.

We also tried to play Clash of Monarchs introductory scenario, but the fact that I (rules explainer by definition) had not read the rules and my counterparty had not understood them made it quite difficult. We will try to plan and play a vassal game in the future.

I grabbed a copy of this from ebay last week. There is a lot of game here. This one was always known as Avalon Hill's most complex game, but I find that the basic mechanics are really not that hard to learn. Making the attacks, coordinating the various air force and paratroopers, resolving combat---none of it is much out of the ordinary.

What's tough are the decisions to be made. There was definitely a bit of despair in trying to figure out how the hell I should go about playing competently. Also, there are myriad special rules for unique circumstances and dealing with geographical quirks. I got the sense while playing that I am forgetting that I have one of those unique situations on the board which merit a peek back at the rulebook.

It looks like a fun game, but it would be wonderful to have a mentoring player for all of this. I still think it may well be worth toughing it out alone.

After finishing last months Blitzkrieg game I set up this recently aquired game. I hadn't played Rise and Decline of the Third Reich in over fifteen years! Yet it seemed to come back quickly. A quick read of the rules and I was off. I really like the looks of the newly redone map. Sadly it still doesn't play well solo.

Despite it's solo limitations I found the game quite enjoyable. I had foegotten how much of a gem the 3R games are. A3R is a definite improvement.

Just set up and started this after my game of A3R. For some reason I keep coming back to this game. It kind of gives me a touch of nostalgia. Takes me back to my earliest wargaming days with AH's Afrika Korps. Only this is even better.

I'm starting this one with a much more agressive Italian opening. Had some real luck with coastal shipping and Bardia port capacity die rolls. So far been able to keep them all supplied and have mauled the British forward elements pretty well. But, O'Connor and the 7th Armored Division have finally all gotten to full strength.

Perhaps a box?

Played my first game tonight. Not the entire game, but rather the shorter scenario that runs from Summer 1942 (Fall Blau) to Fall 1943 (I think). I was the Axis and, well, got a little confused with the victory conditions. It was a learning game anyway (Lesson #1 - learn the victory rules...). Next time around I will be the Allies in the same scenario, then on to the campaign game proper.

I had a lot of fun and also I felt it justified the idea of sticking to a PoG-style game after first learning/playing Shifting Sands. Sure, there are a lot of spaces to watch over and there are quite a lot of exceptions, but I did not feel too overwhelmed at all. I think that there is a lot of fun to get out of the game.

Even though I lost the +2 for British regulars on I think the third card play of the game, the rest of the luck went my way. Including both of us forgetting to add Declaration of Independence and the Baron von Steuben cards until turn 3 or 4. At the beginning of the game we sat then too far to the side. The American player didn't have the greatest hands, while I had great hands. For example, on turn two, I played a 3 ops card (one of three or four in my hand) to bring in reinforcements, only because I didn't have any 1 or 2 ops cards. Hehe The biggest bit of luck though was the game ending on the first possible turn. At one point the British where down to 3 cu's on the map, I don't think I could have won had the game went 1 or 2 more turns.

Was great fun and hope to get in some more plays this month.

Had Mark and Patch over Sunday and played this for the first time in almost a year.

We were due up for a complicated scenario, so it was a lot of rules lookups. However, once we got going, it went pretty smoothly. Three full turns with a good amount of action, and deep enough in to have a good idea of how it was going to end.

We need to find more time for this one.

Mark came over yesterday, and we tried this AtO title out. We didn't even get close to a full game (what's AtO's take on Vassal modules?), but had a grand time regardless. The campaign had a sizable clash in foul weather, which limited gunnery severely, and allowed for some good ramming opportunities. I've only tried a couple AtO games, but this is my favorite for the moment.

After seeing this quite often here on several of the "... On Your Table" lists and reading some good mentions just got to get this and finished a first solo yesterday (so this fits into the May list )

A very swift gameplay and easy unit handling, I really like this one. Looking forward to my first game vs.a life opponent.

Got this together with GMT's "Hellenes" and "Chariots of Fire", so I have something for the June list ...

While I would have liked to have gotten to play ASL, or WiF, or even my shiny new copy of Burma, I recognize that you have to take your wargaming where you can get it. Where I could get it was a 40K battle on Sunday.

My Sisters of Battle teamed up with Grey Knights to purge a heretical Space Marine chapter. Excellent coordination against a piecemeal attack, coupled with a few lucky rolls at key moments, paved the way for victory by the forces of the Imperial Inquisition.
