Feels like it's time for another geeklist that just opens people up to talk about games. Therefore, I decided to start the conversation by getting everyone to evaluate their stats. Everyone is welcome to share!

To access the stats page click on "My Geek." Then click on the "Stats" tab. To start click on "Largest Disparities in Ratings." Whatever is at the top of that list, use as your geeklist item.

Answer the following questions in your geeklist item:

1. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Year." What year do you own the most games from?

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

3. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Designer." Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?

5. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Publisher." What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder?
B. Fantasy Flight?
C. Hasbro?
D. Mayfair?
E. Rio Grande?
F. Z-Man?

6. Go back to the stats page and click on "Overrated Games." What do you rank as the most overrated game?

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

8. Go back to the stats page and click on "Underrated Games." What do you rank as the most underrated game?

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

10. Go back to the stats page and click on "Five & Dimes." Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?[/b]

1. What year do you own the most games from?
I own 27 games each from 2003 and 2004.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?
Of the games from both years, my favorite is Reef Encounter.

3. Which designer have you given the highest average rating?
I own 5 games designed by Andreas Seyfarth, with an average rating of 8.67.

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
7.42, which puts him behind Ulrich (8.00), Breese (8.20), and Seyfarth.

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 7.43
B. Fantasy Flight? 7.43
C. Hasbro? 5.64
D. Mayfair? 7.42
E. Rio Grande? 7.44
F. Z-Man? 8.30

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?
That would be Squad Leader, for which my ranking (2.0) is 5.12 below the BGG average. Perhaps I'm too harsh, but the only time I played it I struggled with the huge ruleset, and just didn't find the game fun. I'll have to revisit this someday.

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?
Many in the target demographic like the fact that they can exert so much control at the squad level. An armchair general can literally have a field day with all the different boards and units that are available in this system.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?
Reef Encounter, for which my rating (10.0) is 2.81 higher than the BGG average.

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?
Well, a 7.19 average rating on this site is still pretty good. It is a bit of a brain-burner, and the theme may not appeal to everyone.

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?
I have 12 games that I've listed as played 9 times. Of those, the most likely to hit 10 first is probably Foppen, as this is a quick game that can accommodate many players. Heck, we almost played it last week, but a seventh player showed up and we had to split into two groups.

1. What Year do you own the most games from?

2004 & 2007 16 games each.

2. From those years, what is your favorite game?

2004 - Ticket to Ride (or Scepter of Zavandor)
2007 - Agricola (or Race for the Galaxy)

3. Which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Tie: Mike Fitzgerald & Andreas Seyfarth (7.20)

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?

7.05

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 6.70
B. Fantasy Flight? 6.58
C. Hasbro? 6.50
D. Mayfair? 6.27
E. Rio Grande? 7.02
F. Z-Man? 6.60

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?

The game listed on my entry: Divine Right

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

1. Not many ratings (341, even another old/dead game like Ogre has over 1,000). Only fans of this game are likely to search it out and rate it.
2. Nostalgia. Even I want to rate it higher from fond memories. But, much like Talisman and Magic Realm, those fond memories are too tinged with the obvious holes/problems within the games. Divine Right just has too many of those to make it an enjoyable game for me. Yet I still own it due to nostalgia.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

HAH! "No items found" I do tend to rate sort of average (LOTS of 7s). 8s, 9s & 10s are rare for me. Don't know why...

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

n/a

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

"Ra: The Dice Game" (9) or "Too Many Cooks" (8). Ra, because I really like it. Too Many Cooks, because one of my Saturday game group likes it more than I like Ra: The Dice Game.

Eek! It's hard to bring myself to use that horrid game in a geeklist entry I post. Anyway...

1. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Year." What year do you own the most games from?
Man, that's difficult.--Looking at that page, it looked like either 1996 or 1999 had the longest blocks of games.--Looks like 1999 just edges out as my most common year probably with around 50 or so titles.--Of course, there are plenty of games I no longer own which haven't been so designated in my collection.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?
Another toughie.--After doing an advanced search for 1999 to 1999, owned by my userID, I see that Ultimate Outburst is my highest rated game from that year(9.25).

3. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Designer." Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?
Dude!--Do you realize how hard this is?--Let me cut and paste the whole screen to Excel and see what I come up with (11:30 A.M.)...--...(12:04 P.M.) Whew.--OK. 625 designers later (of which 38 met your criteria), it appears that Bernhard Naegele ranks at the top with three games averaging 8.63, but they are all really the same game, just three editions (Manimals).--So, if you account for that, the honor goes to Brian Hersch, for whom I have rated 6 games an aggregate of 8.46 (Taboo, the aforementioned Ultimate Outburst, Oodles, Scrutineyes, Outburst!, and Out of Context).--That's mighty impressive.

Anyway, I can't let this pass by without analyzing the data I just had to derive.--There are only seven designers for whom I have rated at least 10 games.--In order of average ranking, here they are:

Aaron Weissblum (11 games, 7.59)
Sid Sackson (13, 7.19)
Alan Moon (22, 7.11)
Jim Deacove (21, 6.55) Bet no one else has this guy on the list
Uncredited (97, 5.95)
Knizia (32, 5.90)
Wolfgang Kramer (13, 5.55)

And two others have 10 or more games I have attributed to me in some way, but fewer than 10 rated games by me--Teuber (9, 5.82) and Alex Randolph (8, 5.81)

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
Of the 32 games of his that I've rated, the average is 5.9

5. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Publisher." What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 3 games, 7.90
B. Fantasy Flight? 6 games, 5.61
C. Hasbro? 32 games, 6.29
D. Mayfair? 25 games, 5.54
E. Rio Grande? 42 games, 6.27
F. Z-Man? 5 games, 5.86

6. Go back to the stats page and click on "Overrated Games." What do you rank as the most overrated game?
That's an easy one--Citadelles.--I rate it a 1, never ever wanting to play that abomination again, and the masses here give it a 7.24.

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?
Because some people love chaos and mental lock-up, I guess.

8. Go back to the stats page and click on "Underrated Games." What do you rank as the most underrated game?
Well, Bingo shows up first, and we know the reason for that.--I properly rate it from the eyes of the target audience, while some people here blindly ignore that and rate it as though it were designed for them.--So, if you take that one away, the parlor game Charades (10 from me, 5.2 from BGG) is the big, um, winner.

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?
That one is easy.--Anti-party game bias.--For whatever reason, people who pride themselves in being a "game geek" just can't accept that having fun playing a game is an acceptable result.

10. Go back to the stats page and click on "Five & Dimes." Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?
This is a tough call.--Bus Depot Diner does get played from time to time with the kids, and it only needs one more play to hit 10.--But, that game is fading as they get older, plus they just don't much like playing games these days.--So, if it isn't played before my next convention, then surely Beyond Balderdash, also at 9 plays right now, will be the next to join my other 31 dimes.

Note: I think I would have been the second person to comment on this thread, but it took a long, long time to gather this info.

Chess (2), I really don't like it very much. Too abstract for me.

1. What year do you own the most games from?

2008 - 18 games/rpg items so far. Closely followed by 1993, with 15 games/rpg items.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

Flames of War Firestorm Campaign: Operation Bagration
Slipstream
Ninja versus Ninja

3. Which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Paul Murphy - Assault on Hoth (10)
Shane Lacy Hensley - Savage Worlds (10)
Roberto Di Meglio / Francesco Nepitello / Marco Maggi - Marvel Heroes & War of the Ring (9.50)

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?

N/A - I don't own a single Knizia game!surprise

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 7.00
B. Fantasy Flight? 8.40
C. Hasbro? 9.00
D. Mayfair? 6.00
E. Rio Grande? N/A - don't own any of their games...
F. Z-Man? N/A - don't own any of their games...

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?

Chess

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

Seems like many people like abstract tactical games - I don't.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

Savage Worlds - simply put the best RPG system ever. Period.

At least for me and my group.

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

Maybe they have played with the wrong group or lack imagination?! Really, I don't know. YMMV, as always.

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

My guess is Battleball - this has so much potential.

(There are 11 games that I have a bigger rating discrepancy on than Sjoelen, but I ain't advertising for dreck. Sjoelen is a good game).

The fact that this is all based on games owned skews the results, so I think these numbers are relevant up front: I own 81 games and 10 expansions. Overall I've rated 230 games and 14 expansions.

1. 2008 is my most-represented year, with 10 games.
2. My favourite game of 2008 is Dominion.

3. My highest rated designer (based on what I own) is Uncredited with a rating of 8.00 for 6 games. Of designers with a name, Martin Wallace ranks highest with a rating of 7.67 for Steam, Steel Driver, and Toledo. There is not a lot of competition in this category as there are very few designers that I own 3 rated games for.

4. I own 7 Knizia games and rate them 7.57 collectively.

5. Publishers:

A. Days of Wonder - They've yet to come out with a game I care to own.

B. Fantasy Flight - Red November is generously rated a 7.

C. Hasbro - 6.57 on 7 games, led by Rook at 8.

D. Mayfair - 7.50 on 6 games. This includes 2 Settlers expansions and does not include 3 games I haven't played yet.

E. Rio Grande - 8.07 for 30 games & expansions from the world's greatest publisher of board games*.

F. Z-Man - 7.60 on 5 games, with Santiago yet to be played or rated.

*English-language editions.

6. The most overrated game in all of BGG is Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game.
7. Users of BGG are generally geekier than me. They think zombies are cool. I think zombies are lame.

8. The most underrated game in all of BGG is Sjoelen.
9. Most BGGers have never heard of Sjoelen, so it suffers badly from the Bayesian averaging (it only has 98 ratings). The Dutch are all familiar with it, but apparently they don't think as fondly on it as we Canadians do of Crokinole. It's borderline for being inside the scope of BGG, and it's a solitaire game. But it's very fun!

10. Dixit has been a big hit with various friends and is currently at 7 plays. I plan to pick up the expansion soon, as I'm starting to get too familiar with the cards.

I'm surprised that there isn't much to contend with it. Poker is at 8 plays but I prefer it only slightly to poking myself in the eye. StreetSoccer is short & sweet and also at 8 plays, but I play it very sporadically. San Juan could shoot up from its current 6 plays as I've recently got some more friends on to it.

1. 2008 wins by one over 2004. 2007 is two back, and 2005 three back.

2. I've really enjoyed Le Havre; it's my favourite title from 2008.

3. Richard Ulrich wins by a large margin for Merchants of the Middle Ages, El Grande (inc. expansions), and The Princes of Florence. He's aided by the fact that I've not played anything else he's done - so there are no dogs to hold him back.

4. I've given Reiner Knizia's games a mean rating of 7.1. My favourites of his games are Battle Line and Tadsch Mahal - and my least liked are Tigris & Euphrates and Medici (demonstrating, if I had not already done that conclusively by some other comments made here, that I have No Taste and am Clearly Not To Be Trusted.)

5. A. Days of Wonder: I've rated 9 games; average is 6.07. My favourite (partly because of the enthusiasm of my mother & daughter) is Ticket to Ride: Switzerland.
B. Fantasy Flight: I've rated 38 games with an average of 7.3. My favourites aren't original with FFG - Planet Steam and Cosmic Encounter. From their original output, I prefer TI3.
C. Hasbro: I've rated 18 games at an average of 5.65. My favourite of those is easily Pit.
D. Mayfair: I've rated 24 games; average 6.55. The one I like best (on a technicality; the Mayfair version isn't out yet!) is Automobile.
E. Rio Grande: I've rated 121 games with an average of 7.02. My favourite is easily Race for the Galaxy.
F. Z-Man: I've rated 32 games an average of 7.22. The one I like best is Agricola.

6. According to my BGG stats page, the game I find the most overrated is Quidditch: The Game - something that the stats page claims the collective here unaccountably gives an average rating of 5.07 while I assign it its rightful 1.0. Battlestar Galactica isn't far behind on my overrated list: I think it's only worth a 4.0. (The game, while perhaps delightfully thematic for those that care about such things, is long, repetitious, long, and tedious. It somehow makes me think of playing Werewolf where half of the negotiations need to be done with Bridge bid boxes. Ugh. Oh, yeah: if you weren't paying attention earlier, I refer you back to #4. "No Taste", remember?)

7. Why is Quidditch: The Game rated so high? Well, the truth is it's not: the stats page has a bug. If one goes to the game page, you can see that the average rating is 2.44 - not far from the rightful 1. So let me talk some more about Battlestar Galactica. Why do folk like it? I suspect some of it is fandom of the show: if one cares about the characters (I do not) or the setting (again, no) or about the existential questions of Cylon-ness (feh) a game that explores that territory for three or four hours might be completely delightful. I suspect much of my grumpiness with the game is that I am simply not part of the target demographic. Or it might be that, deprived of the setting and theme, the game is simply not very good. You may now hang me in effigy.

8. Underrated? According to the stats page, Magic Realm. That sounds about right: I bought my copy in the fall of 1978, and have played it a lot in the last 30+ years.

9. Why do folk dislike Magic Realm? It takes some application to dive into the 120+ pages of rules and tables to have an idea of how to begin play. Then one needs to practice somewhat: it's incredibly easy to die if you're not paying attention. Given that the game probably only begins to shine when the mechanics are sufficiently ingrained that the game experience takes centre stage (rather than the constant referring to the rules that marks the first several plays) it's not at all surprising that many BGGers don't like it. I find it more surprising how many people are willing to make the effort to learn!

10. There are several likely candidates for reaching 10 plays. My sons and I are in the middle of a Descent: The Road to Legend campaign (that now includes the base game expansions). We'll likely continue that campaign in the next week and that'll push the expansions over the line. TI3 could make it; Africa, too, since it's one of my daughter's favourites.

Most overrated game: Loot
This game stinks, pure and simple. It's mostly chaos and randomness throughout.

Most underrated game: Poker
Sure, there is a lot of luck in poker, but there is a lot more skill than a lot of people believe. It's about the thrill of gambling combined with winning more than losing over a long period of time.

Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

San Juan (9 plays)
Both of these games are enjoyed by my family so they get played.

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

The majority of zombie games are dross, it didn't take much for this heap stand out from the crowd.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

Battlecars

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

The rules are a little clunky & cumbersome. It's hard to get hold of, the components aren't anything special by todays standards, and there's a lot of things that could be simplified. It really needs an update. It also falls under the hammer of BGG'ers giving GW products a 1 for their piss poor attitude towards their customers/fans

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

1. Excluding expansions, I have 8 games from both 2008 and 2009.

2a. My favorite game from 2008 is Pandemic, even though I've probably received the most value out of Monopoly Deal.

2b. My hands-down favorite game from 2009 is Chaos in the Old World.

3 & 4. I have rated the 5 games I own designed by Reiner Knezia highest, at a rating of 6.76.

5a. I only own a single Days of Wonder game, and that is Small World, which I rate a 6.5.

5b. Fantasy Flight has a high average rating of 6.75, courtesy of my favorite game, Chaos in the Old World.

5c. I figure that the only "real" Hasbro game I own is Monopoly Deal, which I rate a 6.9. However, there are other games listed--Guillotine, Lord of the Rings--that bring the average down to 6.13.

5d. My average rating for Mayfair games is skewed due to me still owning a copy of Settlers of Catan--a game that I don't care for very much (rated a 4). The average rating is 6.33, but if you remove that outlier, the average would be a 7.1.

5e. Rio Grande games are a healthy 6.61, and include a fair chunk of my Top 10 games.

5f. 7.33--the highest yet! Shadow Hunters, Santiago, and Pandemic are the games that make up this average, and they are all games I really enjoy.

6. The most overrated game in my collection is Settlers of Catan. I rate the game a 4, and the average geek rating is 7.464.

7. I believe that I rate Settlers lower than the majority of other geeks because it was not a--or better yet, "the"--game that pulled me into the hobby. I played it well after learning about other games, so it didn't do anything for me that wasn't already done by a better game.

8. The most underrated game in my collection is Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I rate it a pure 10, while the average geek rates it a 6.304.

9. I rate this game as perfect due to its all-encompassing hobby appeal. I like to paint, I like to create armylists, and I like to read the fluff. Oh yeah, and I like to play the game. Warhammer is more than just a game to me. I have a feeling that the average geek rating reflects only the gaming aspect, not the entire hobby.

10. I have played 8 games of Jaipur, and I see it breaking into the dimes really soon. It has become the coffee game of choice for my fiance and I on our Saturday morning dates.

Answer the following questions in your geeklist item:

1. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Year." What year do you own the most games from?
2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

2007 is my most populous year, with 7 games/expansions.
Of those, I'll pick ... Airships as my favourite from that year.

3. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Designer." Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Steven V. Cole has earned an average rating of 7.12 from me.

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?

I've rated two of his games, one an 8 and one a 7. That makes... 7.5.

5. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Publisher." What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder?
0 games, no rating.
B. Fantasy Flight? 3 games, 6.83
C. Hasbro? 1 game*, 8.00
D. Mayfair? 2 games, 6.25
E. Rio Grande? 3 games, 7.67
F. Z-Man? 3 games 7.00

Of course, these stats above aren't really true, since many games I bought were from different publishers, and these guys just issued reprints or different versions of the titles.

*For the record, also an interesting stat, since the list includes everyone who has published a version of each game, I have at least 19 different publishers of my one game of Scrabble, alone (mine's from MB, not Hasbro).

6. Go back to the stats page and click on "Overrated Games." What do you rank as the most overrated game?
7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

Risk 2210 is the most overrated game. My rating is 3.09 points lower than the average. Sure, it's Risk, but I wonder how it's rated: compared to the original Risk (like I do) or rated for itself (which I've not done, but if I did the rating would be even lower).

8. Go back to the stats page and click on "Underrated Games." What do you rank as the most underrated game?
9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

See item. This is a fantastic CCG. Of course, since it's only a CCG, I can imagine that pure boardgame players won't have given this game a second look. Also, given the theme, you'd think you need to be a fan of Warhammer to enjoy this game. It helps you know who's who and stuff, but isn't mandatory to enjoy the mechanics.

10. Go back to the stats page and click on "Five & Dimes." Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

I don't track plays. I try only to keep games that I actually play, good rulebook reading asides.

(I have all things Catan rated highly, and it seems this 5-6 player extension is lower in most people's ratings!)

1. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Year." What year do you own the most games from?
Actually, that is 2009 by the look of things. Hmm, maybe I need a 'cult of the new' microbadge....

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

Endeavor is definitely my favorite complete game, but Pandemic: On the Brink is also in that list - and as my most played game that has to be up there too!

3. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Designer." Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?
Klaus Teuber doesn't have much competition using those criteria!

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
8, but that's only one game somehow... Keltis: Das Kartenspiel

5. Go back to the stats page and click on "Games Owned by Publisher." What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 9.0: but only 1 game + 1 expansion
B. Fantasy Flight? n/a blush
C. Hasbro? 6.44: nine games rated.
D. Mayfair? 8.89: 2 games and 7 expansions (did I mention I enjoy Catan?)
E. Rio Grande? 9.0: only one game
F. Z-Man? 8.67: two games, one expansion

6. Go back to the stats page and click on "Overrated Games." What do you rank as the most overrated game?
UNO, apparently.

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?
I guess it is a classic.

8. Go back to the stats page and click on "Underrated Games." What do you rank as the most underrated game?

That would be Catan: Traders & Barbarians – 5-6 Player Extension.

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?
I guess there is a lot of "Catan-fatigue' around.

10. Go back to the stats page and click on "Five & Dimes." Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary: Those who do, and those who don't.
mbmbmbmbmb
I'm tied (5 games each) for two years: 2000/ 2001. In 2000 I'd say Princes of Florence is the star.
2001 actually contains many of my least favorite games, but the best would be Genoa.

Mike Fitzgerald is my #1 designer, which makes sense since I imediately went looking for Mystery Rummy 2, 3, 4, and Wyatt Earp once I knew that I loved Mystery Rummy #1. You still can't beat the original, either.
Uncredited makes a strong bid for my #2 designer, though.

EDIT: Whoops! Forgot about Mr. Knizia. I gave him a 7.2 for Ivanhoe.

Alea: 7.47 ave.
Days of Wonder: 7.12 ave.
Ravensburger: 7.00 ave.
Z-Man: 7.35 ave.
Rio Grande: 7.57 ave.
This is, by far, my largest game group (20 + an expansion) so the average score tells a lot, here.

Overated? I gave Twilight Struggle a 5 since the learning curve is so steep and the amount of time to dedicate to a game is so high. Lots of little bits to move around and lose track of. I just don't see the appeal, although I love the theme.

Underrated? Back to Trivial Pursuit, no surprise, which I ranked very high. Because I'm good at it.
I think that most people rank it low a) because it's a roll-and move game and b) because they do not enjoy trivial facts, simply put. Whereas I know stuff that I have no business remembering.

The ole five and dime list? Dixit seems poised to break into the ten plays soon. As soon as five or more of us get together for another game--it doesn't play well with less than four, and four isn't exactly stellar either.

1. What year do you own the most games from?

2004 with 17 games.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

Power Grid

3. Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Kurt Martin, designer of several Advanced Tobruk Series (ATS) games

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
For the three I own, it's a solid 6.

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 8.6 (I love Battlelore and the expansions).
B. Fantasy Flight? 7.5
C. Hasbro? 6.25
D. Mayfair? 6.67
E. Rio Grande? 7.5
F. Z-Man? 6.67

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?

Advanced Squad Leader ASL is my most overrated as well as my highest disparity in rankings. I feel that it's broken, with it's ancient sequence of play that encourages sleaze tactics and it's awful depiction of artillery in a game with 100s of pages of rules that supposedly make it "realistic".

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

I think ASL appeals to a lot of wargamers who like control and believe that more rules means more realism. I like games that focus on a few important things and can live with more abstraction if it speeds play.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

Berlin: Red Victory The ATS game on the Battle for Berlin in WWII.

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

Not many have played it, so it suffers in the Bayesian rankings. Also, a few ASLers rate it a 1, probably in retaliation for ATS players who rank ASL a 1shake

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

BattleLore I like playing this with my son.

6. Rise and Decline of the Third Reich
7. I readily admit this is personality as well as my two experiences with the game.
8. Texas 42
9. Born in Texas it is in my blood - I honestly don't expect non-Texans to understand.
10. Alea Iacta Est - I have had good results teaching this to both new and seasoned gamers and both types enjoy the game.

1. What year do you own the most games from?

I thought it might have changed because I've been paring down my collection a bit, but it's still 2004 with 29 games.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?

My favorite game from that year might be St. Petersburg. Though there are two others from that year that I rate a 10: Reef Encounter and In the Shadow of the Emperor.

3. Which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Looks like Tom Lehmann with an 8.97, but that's only four games (and two expansions). Behind him is Kris Burm, with an average rating of 8.7. But that's only five games. Rüdiger Dorn gets an 8.08 with six games rated.

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?

7.26 with 21 games (or expansions) rated.

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 7.06 / 5 games
B. Fantasy Flight? 6.95 / 10 games
C. Hasbro? 6.0 / 13 games
D. Mayfair? 7.50 / 17 games
E. Rio Grande? 7.90 / 50+ games
F. Z-Man? 7.69 / 8 games

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?

I knew this one before I looked: Chaos in the Old World. cool Average Geek Rating: 7.58. My Rating: 1

Other "overrated":

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
Wabash Cannonball
Arkham Horror
Unspeakable Words
Poker
Power Grid
Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age
Pillars of the Earth

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

Horror theme and little plastic figures. Those things are like catnip to geeks.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

Hansa (Changing Winds) which I rate a 10, and the Geek rates 5.77.

Other "underrated":

Waldschattenspiel
Hansa
In the Shadow of the Emperor
Louis XIV
Vikings
Reef Encounter

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

It's a puzzle-like pick-up and deliver game of movement optimization which shines with two, and the Changing Winds map and scoring variant make it even better. And obviously not everyone likes those things. cool

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

I'm guessing Cartagena, Oregon, or San Marco, all of which currently have 9 plays, and all of which I'm hankering to play again.

1. What year do you own the most games from?
2006 - 157 games

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?
Pax Romana - A great civilization building game (more later).

3. Which designer have you given the highest average rating?
Richard Berg 9.5 - (Only 2 games rated) (Pax Romana and Successors)
Vlaada Chvatil 9.0
Francis Trescham 8.75
Uwe Rosenberg 8.25

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
Reiner gets a 7.71

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games:

A. Days of Wonder? 7.0
B. Fantasy Flight? 7.47
C. Hasbro? 6.25
D. Mayfair? 7.29
E. Rio Grande? 7.32
F. Z-Man? 7.61

Wargame Publishers
G. Avalon Hill 7.71
H. Multi-Man Publishing 8.33
I. GMT 8.62

6. What do you rank as the most overrated game?
The Ungame I rate a 1 (3.36 delta) No real debate there. I have an active loathing for this alleged game.
Power Struggle I rate a 4. (2.8 delta)

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?
I've worked in the corporate environment. It was a highlight of all the things I don't like about the corporate world. And yes,I've had someone that I've worked with identified as taking bribes for contracts. The theme was a huge turn off.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?
Pax Romana (3.45 delta)
Factory Fun (3.25 delta)

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?
Pax Romana - Wargamers play it expecting a wargame. It's not. I view it as a civ building game which leaves the wargamers with all sorts of complaints about the combat and the mechanics.
Factory Fun - I suspect that a lot of people don't like the spatial puzzle solving aspect, or that there isn't much player interaction.

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?
I wish it was Kremlin with 8 plays. But it also may be Ticket to Ride: Europe which I play with children quite a bit.

1. What year do you own the most games from?
My list is heavily weighted towards recent years (2008 - 32, 2009 - 29, next highest - 12). I'm HUGE into trading, buying & selling and I guess I just haven't had time to get tired of those games yet.

2. From that year, what was your favorite game?
My favorite game from 2008 is my favorite game of all time, Dominion. Sure, call me a cultist of the new, but I was a pretty serious Magic player for years, so I don't see my passion for Dominion and it's spawn fading anytime soon.

3. Only counting designers for which you own and have rated at least 3 games, which designer have you given the highest average rating?

Counting all the iterations of Dominion, easily Donald X, with 8.71. But if you call Dominion and all it's expansions one game and count only games (not expansions, which disqualifies Descent and LNoE) it's good old Franz-Benno Delonge, with a respectable 7.50.

4. What is the average rating you've given to Reiner Knizia games?
7.00, for the Knizia games I own.

5. What is your average rating for the following companies games (that I own):

A. Days of Wonder? 8.00 (only Small World & Exp)
B. Fantasy Flight? 7.46 (8 games, 6 exp)
C. Hasbro? (none owned/rated)
D. Mayfair? 6.75 (7 games, 3 exp)
E. Rio Grande? 8.00 (18 games, 7 exp)
F. Z-Man? 7.80 (10 games, 2 exp)

6. Go back to the stats page and click on "Overrated Games." What do you rank as the most overrated game?

Highest ratings disparity: Le Havre
I rated it a one to piss someone off. Yeah, I went there. Whatcha gonna do about it?

Real opinion: Once Upon a Time - it's not a game!

7. Why do you think this game has been rated so much higher by the users of BGG?

People think it's a game.

8. What do you rank as the most underrated game?

Descent: Sea of Blood. It's Descent campaign mode (the only way to play) with pirates! What's not to like???

9. Why do you think this game has been rated so much lower by the users of BGG?

Beats the heck out of me!

10. Which game that is near the top of your "5 or more plays" list do you think will be the next to break into your "10 or more plays" list?

Saint Petersburg and Bananagrams are both sitting pretty at 9, but I have a copy of the Treasure Chest San Juan expansion on the way so that will probably jump from 7 to 10 very quickly.

1. With 57 (really?) total games owned, 2008 is my most common year.

2. My favorite game from 2008 is Cavum, which just barely beats out Tinner's Trail.

3. With 3 games rated, Wolfgang Kramer has my highest average rating (8.67.) However, there's many designers with a higher average and fewer games owned.

4. I have given Reiner Knizia games an average rating of 7.5 for 2 games. I also like several of his games that I don't own.

5. A. I've rated 1 Days of Wonder game - Small World, which got an 8.
B. I've own no Fantasy Flight games. yuk
C. I've rated 7 Hasbro games an average of 6.29. Scrabble is my favorite.
D. I've rated 3 Mayfair games an average of 6.67. Elk Fest is my favorite.
E. I've rated 20 Rio Grande games and average of 7.85. Puerto Rico is my favorite.
F. I've rated 4 Z-Man games an average of 8.0. Agricola is my favorite.

6. Apparently I think Once upon a Time is the most overrated, but I'd like to point out that the first 6 listed also suck big time, the other 5 being Attribute gulp, Ingenious, Poker, Tales of Arabian Nights and Quelf.

7. There are some crazy people who actually like Once upon a time. Some of them I actually know! Yea, I couldn't believe it either! devil

8. I think Bughouse Chess is the most Underrated game. It is really fun. I also think Power Grid EnBw and Cavum are awesome games that people should rate a lot higher.

9. I'm not sure why Bughouse Chess is rated so poorly. I think there's a core group of buggers who get hooked and play 5000+ games and most other people just don't care for it as much.

10. It will probably be Taluva. Princes of Florence is also at 9, but Taluve has been getting pulled out more often.
