As a newcomer to boardgaming, it won't take one long to find out about Agricola, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Dominion or Carcassonne. Even if you never ever heard anything about board games, when you login to BGG for the first time, top 100 will most likely be your "way in".

But what about those little gems that we find out about after weeks/months in this hobby? Those games that didn't (yet?) make it to the top 500 but are some brilliant finds in themselves? Games that we would gladly play just as often as the well known titles in our collection?

Which is your favorite game outside top 500? Let everybody know, thumb this list and win geek gold! To enter this contest, you must simply thumb this list or my list entry. The least I can do - I will thumb each entry added to the list.

PRIZES:

The following prizes are up for grabs:
First prize: 10 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Second prize: 5 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Third prize: 3 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
No individual can win twice, so in case random.org returns the same winner for a second time, I will redraw.

Additional Door prizes: 1 per door prize. Later edit #1: Because the tipping might not be an exact round number, I will give out the last door prize as a 0.X , depending on how much I'd have left once all the other prizes will be drawn.

I will give door prizes to as many of you as I can, based on all the tips I get for this list and the GG I collect from other sources while this contest lasts. Door prizes will also be selected at random. No geek gold will be kept for myself. All tips that I receive will given away as prizes.

The contest will end on May 31st, 2010, 20:00 PM, CET (Central European Time).

I am adding as the first entry one of the little great games I found when browsing some items for an auction. It has made it into my collection and it's highly unlikely I will ever part with it.

Later edit #2: I am closing the contest at this point in time. There have been 601 thumbs for the geeklist and 50 thumbs for Dynasties. Most of the users thumbed both, but there have been 6 users only thumbing the geeklist item. This means 607 entries in the draw pool. I will use random.org to select the winners and will post the results as soon as possible.

At the time when the contest ended, I had 36.70 shiny in my reserve.

And the WINNERS are:

FIRST place and 10 as determined by random.org goes to:

Senator is a great game, especially if you're somewhat new to board gaming: It's pretty quick to play (under an hour), pretty easy to learn and teach, presents interesting decisions to the players, it's fundamentally language independent, it's a game of player interaction (multiplayer solitare is impossible here), and a good dose of screwage/competition, and it's a Fantasy Flight Silver Line game (which means it's cheap to buy, fairly easy to find, and has pretty good components).

This one is a no-brainer. Parade is very-nearly in my Top 10, largely on the strength of the two-player game. In fact, the two-player game is so good, and so overlooked, that it recently motivated my second-ever review (find it HERE).

Parade is a simple card game in the same vein as something like Battle Line. Like Battle Line, this game generates a ton of tension. Unlike Battle Line, the game has an incredibly subtle scoring system (and is therefore not so amenable to calculation). Because the scoring is in tension with the end game trigger, doing well in Parade usually means giving up the ability to control when and how the game comes to an end. This is not a game where success simply snowballs into more success. The game is about awareness, timing, and playing by feel.

With the high level of interaction, and the challenging tactical decisions, the game plays both mean and smart. (But with the hand-drawn Alice artwork, it's hard for the game to ever feel mean.) It's one of the few games that I think gets noticeably better with two. It will take a few plays for the depth, control, and nuances to become apparent. But even at it's most basic, it's a great tactical game that I would recommend to almost anyone.

And, admit it, the artwork is beautiful:

This game is the older brother of Chicago Express. It is also a game of player alliances, i.e. trying to put the rest of the table in a position that they help you win. It runs a fixed 9 turns and there is no share dilution, which makes for a more stable, predictable game.

As far as I know it's never been licensed from Winsome by a major publisher. This is a shame: it's my favourite of the Winsome games that I've had a chance to play and I think that it would do well with a wider audience.

I realize that at a rank of five hundred and mumbleteen, Key Harvest isn't overly far out of the top 500. But last year when a bunch of board games went on sale on Amazon, I bought a handful, and this was by far my favorite. We play it two player, and while I preferred the one time I managed to play it 3-player, it's still quite fun with 2.

Having read about 180 Perry Rhodan books in my teens, I bought this game just for the theme, but it was a pleasant surprise and quickly became my favorite for two players. It was also my most played game last year. It's light, with quite some luck in the cards and the die, but not so much to prevent the better player from winning most of the time. The theme and artwork surely help, but I find the gameplay very enjoyable.

WITH THE FACTIONS

The Eaters of the Lotus are a cabal of evil eunuch sorcerers from ancient China who have usurped power in the Imperial court using black magic and demons.

The Architects of the Flesh are scientists from the future who have figured out how to combine magic and technology into a perverse new form of science called Arcanotechnology, which they use to convert captured demons into creatures known as abominations. The Architects formerly controlled the future, but a civil war split them in half, and then a critical shift in 1934 essentially wiped them out of the timestream. The faction's two halves have now been split across the time-stream: The BuroMil, the military arm led by Johann Bonengel has taken over Nazi Germany from within, while the CDCA, the research division headed by Dr. Curtis Boatman, now heads a multinational corporation in 2066.

The Dragons are a rag-tag collection of mavericks and heroes from across time who've banded together to fight against evil and tyranny in the name of freedom and justice. Their success in the 1930s Pulp junction (in conjunction with the Purists' major failure) caused the most recent critical shift and made their de facto leader, Zheng Yi Quan, the new master of the modern world.

The Guiding Hand are a secret society composed of monks, revolutionaries, and martial artists led by the Perfect Master Quan Lo who seek to drive all foreign influences out of China in 1859 and extend their vision of a world based on neo-Confucian principles across time.

The Ascended are animals who achieved human form long ago and who once controlled the world both in 1860 and 2006 from the heart of a vast conspiracy. They still have control of 1860, but have lost much of their power and influence in 2006 following the critical shift in 1934.

The Jammers are a loose organization of rebels, malcontents, anarchists, and cyborg monkeys. Originally a rebel group in opposition to the Architects of the Flesh, they believe that the only way to free humanity from tyranny and oppression is through the destruction of every feng shui site in existence. They operate primarily out of the Netherworld. They recently captured a major juncture - with benefits upcoming the set after Empire of Evil.

The Four Monarchs are two brothers and two sisters of incredible magical might who once ruled the modern world in an alternate timeline. Their version of reality was erased by the Ascended, forcing them into exile in the Netherworld.

The Seven Masters are a group of legendary warrior-monks who live in isolation and practice a philosophy of non-intervention, except in the most dire of situations. They appear to be based in the 71 juncture.

The Purists began as Lotus infiltrators of the Architects sent to study that faction's Arcanotechnology and, being unbound by Lotus traditions, developed a radical new "pure" and math-based sorcery known as Paradox Magic. Having recently lost their stronghold in the future, they've quietly re-established themselves in 1936.

The Syndicate is a secretive organization which rules the world in 2066 through control of all the major criminal organizations and corporations. They came into existence after the critical shift in 1934 that erased the Architects' version of reality.

Ignore this game only at your own peril.

Hellas is a fast, fun and almost furious 2 player game. Easy to learn, portable and little downtime charaterize this mini game of conflict in the days of the Greeks. Players can launch voyages, attack cities and appeal to the gods Poseidon, Ares and Zeus. A little bit of many themes here: player actions like a Euro, conflict like a wargame, miniatures like Ameritrash, hand managememt like some CDG's.

Currently situated at rank #966 (can we at least get it to 666! ).

This free print and play game should be in every gamer's pocket!

Simple to play, hard to win (making it so much more satisfying when you do win) and plenty of choices along the way. Easily portable so you can play a game or two while waiting for your car at the car wash, have yourself 12 or more games while waiting for your 'appointment' at the DMV, or attempt to survive a Zombie onslaught while waiting in the doctor's office!

Don't like Zombies? Not to worry, this little gem has been rethemed to about 20 different genres! But don't look for Space Hulk!

This is real fun game, kinda surprised why it is ranked so low... Weird name maybe?? It's highly recommended coz it's really a great game, I like it, my wife likes it and everyone I have introduced it to has loved it...

It's close between this and Set, both of which I rate an 8.

Circus Max (Current BGG Rank: 719) is always fun -- carnage galore, and if you're not winning the race, well, it's always fun to see how many people you can take down with you.

As for Set(Current BGG Rank: 710), I know some people don't think of it as a game at all, but I assure you, for some of us it's very, very competitive. It's also about the only "speed" game I really enjoy; I have NO dexterity, so things like Jungle Speed make me run the other way, but the only things here I have to get running at full speed are my eyes, brain, and mouth, and if I'm in "the zone", they all work in harmony -- rare for me.

Honorable mention to Prolix, my favorite word game, which is still awaiting publication, and thus is unrated.
