As a newcomer to boardgaming, it won't take one long to find out about Agricola, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Dominion or Carcassonne. Even if you never ever heard anything about board games, when you login to BGG for the first time, top 100 will most likely be your "way in".

But what about those little gems that we find out about after weeks/months in this hobby? Those games that didn't (yet?) make it to the top 500 but are some brilliant finds in themselves? Games that we would gladly play just as often as the well known titles in our collection?

Which is your favorite game outside top 500? Let everybody know, thumb this list and win geek gold! To enter this contest, you must simply thumb this list or my list entry. The least I can do - I will thumb each entry added to the list.

PRIZES:

The following prizes are up for grabs:
First prize: 10 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Second prize: 5 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
Third prize: 3 One individual selected at random who thumbs this list.
No individual can win twice, so in case random.org returns the same winner for a second time, I will redraw.

Additional Door prizes: 1 per door prize. Later edit #1: Because the tipping might not be an exact round number, I will give out the last door prize as a 0.X , depending on how much I'd have left once all the other prizes will be drawn.

I will give door prizes to as many of you as I can, based on all the tips I get for this list and the GG I collect from other sources while this contest lasts. Door prizes will also be selected at random. No geek gold will be kept for myself. All tips that I receive will given away as prizes.

The contest will end on May 31st, 2010, 20:00 PM, CET (Central European Time).

I am adding as the first entry one of the little great games I found when browsing some items for an auction. It has made it into my collection and it's highly unlikely I will ever part with it.

Later edit #2: I am closing the contest at this point in time. There have been 601 thumbs for the geeklist and 50 thumbs for Dynasties. Most of the users thumbed both, but there have been 6 users only thumbing the geeklist item. This means 607 entries in the draw pool. I will use random.org to select the winners and will post the results as soon as possible.

At the time when the contest ended, I had 36.70 shiny in my reserve.

And the WINNERS are:

FIRST place and 10 as determined by random.org goes to:

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest and/or took the time to add items to this geeklist, there have been some really, really good games added. Some have made it to my wishlist and this geeklist served it's purpose for that matter.

Later edit #3: All have now been successfully sent out. Phew, it took a while

Ok - I shouldn't be adding two favorites, so please consider this one my wife's favorite instead.

This one was only ever released in the German Kosmos edition, and it can be a bit pricey for the contents, but for an easy-going two player game it rates pretty well, and always seems to come out fairly close in the end.

The basic idea is to draw tiles and use them to maximize points from your garden. There is a limited interaction, consisting of a shared piece of garden where both may grow beds and where the owner is the one with the largest bed attached to his yard. There is also the opportunity to place a tile upside down as a weed 3x per game, which can be very effective at the right time, though often you can do as well or better if there's a spot in your own garden.

Interesting choices in a nice little 2-player game.

My top rated game doesn't even make it into the top 1000. I know that abstracts don't get a lot of love here, but a rank of 1298 for this elegant modern classic? Really?

Currently ranked: 1298

Second and third among my favorite games outside of the top 500 are the traditional card game Spades at 528 and the obscure but fun little abstract dice game Warp 6 way down at 2583.

Nice little card game with some luck and some strategy. Can be played with 2, but gets more interesting with more. Very simple, yet very challenging. There is also a variant to add some stress to the game.

A very simple game, latter retouched and rethemed to become "Les Fils de Samarande". This game is quite easily learnable by newbies, and gives them a good taste of modern boardgames with original mechanics.

Still asked a lot in my gaming group. And I'm not getting sick of hearing: "He stole my cowboys, killed my Mayor, and hanged my Sherrif!" whistle

I'm going to suggest a couple of games for this list, the first published over 20 years ago and the second (scroll on down), published this year (2010).

Star Wars:Assault on Hoth
Probably one of the best Star Wars games around (though I can't claim to have played them all...), played it to death (star) when first purchased back in the 1980's.

Hattrick is an outstanding trick taking game for 5 or 6 players. The twist that there are two trump suits (out of the available three) each trick, with the third suit counting as negative. It's full of painful choices (in a good way!), particularly towards the end of a round.

How can this possible be #2331? Or not mentioned very early in this geek list (unless I missed it, in which case just ignore me). A brilliant 'games players' party game. More subtle than it looks, frustratingly funny to play, especially when a +/- card pops up and everyone goes into bush mode whilst frantically trying to work out what to do next. Neat scoring mechanic, too, with the winner being the player whose 2nd piece is most advanced.

So:

1) Read the reviews.

2) Buy it. (you can skip step 1 if you like)

3) And by all means send me bag for having introduced you to it.

Ranked 1467 at the time of this posting.

3 of my top 10 are outside the top 500. I got Axiom because of its appearance (especially the recent release with the curvy pieces and the magnetic bits). I was very happy when it turned out to have nice game play as well. It's one of those games that is simple to learn, and complex to play, while also being enjoyable.

Non-gamer friends of mine have liked it. That was an added bonus. One even asked where she could buy it. Her husband liked another of the games (that is outside the top 500) - Gemblo. I often find that the games I like (and my friends like) are not very popular on the geek.

Thanks very much for this list

I wanted to post Assyria but I'm sure that is getting #500 for sure, it's a matter of time.

I also wanted to post Richelieu but was posted by other geek (my thumb up for you!)

Terra Nova was also posted (my thumb up for you also!)

I'm between three games that I think deserve much more attention Uruk: Wiege der Zivilisation, Ponte del Diavolo and Conhex.

The only complain is that pure abstract strategy games have no love here in BGG, anyway my game is Ponte del Diavolo a game dedicated to Alex Randolph by Martin Ebel. I have Ponte del Diavolo rated with a solid 10 so I have to support it. I have played more than 110 times and I can say is a masterpiece! Once you achieve the top of the learning curve of Ponte del Diavolo and start to see the potential of your moves you'll love this game.

But give a try also to Conhex and Uruk.

Sylla is a great eurogame with many interesting mechanics and a decent level of theme for a euro.

Managing your characters for bidding and voting throughout the various phases of the game isn't simple to grasp on the first play, but after a few plays things start to gel and the result is some very satisfying game play.

The artwork is fantastic and really enhances the feel of the game. The theme stands out in the voting mechanics as the role of each player is part of the Roman senate. Each player is collectively deciding the fate of Rome. Mostly dealing with the disasters Rome faces, but also whether or not Rome should put time and resources into building wonders.

My biggest complaint is the design of the board itself. It's too small and the artwork on the board doesn't match up to the gorgeous artwork on the cards. Many people have a hard time with the idea of Christians existing B.C.E. - But this doesn't bother me, because the idea of Christian persecution usually comes out later in the game and the timespan of the game could easily move into A.C.E. by the game's end if you think about all of the wonders that have been built by the end of the game.

If you can get past these minor quibbles and you enjoy medium-heavy gamers games with a Roman senate theme, then give Sylla a try.

The only game I have bought based on hearing it played. The first time it was played at my games club, I was playing something else. The people playing it were making so much noise and obviously having great fun that I ordered a copy the next day.

One of the most played games of last year at my club. A bit like Formula D but with the freedom to choose your own course.

The simple auction game is my go to family game with loads of fun but still satisfies the gaming itch.

This might be my most recommended game because of its obscurity.
