Time to let us know what you are playing during the month of July! Did you get any wargames on the table for the long weekend, those of you in the US anyway? Did you try out any of the new ones you may have received from the last Math Trade?

Just a suggestion - if you happen to see the game you are playing already in the list, may I humbly suggest you just add a comment rather than a new entry? Only a suggestion, mind you, and you don't need to go on a Quest(tm), but it would give the rest of us an idea of what games are really being played.

Having completed our run with the AH classic, Battle of the Bulge (1965), my buddy Dan and I have stepped it up with the start of our campaign in Southern Russia, via the TSR 2nd edition of Drive on Stalingrad! Here is our initial session report, covering the first two weeks of Case Blue:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/540582/stavka-aar-1-28-j...

So far, the campaign is following the historic events, with the initial activity in the North, as the 4th Panzer Armee pushes towards Voronezh.

I am happy to say I actually played a non-miniatures hex and counter wargame this month. I got SL in a trade, played both solo and f2f. You know what? This is still a solid tactical game 33 years later. I'm only 9 years older than this game is but Squad Leader can absolutely give a lot of the modern lower-complexity tactical wargames a run for their money.

BTW don't run out into the other players LOS. Especially if he has machine guns.

Still playing the same game of TS (as the US) via vassal that I started in June. I pulled out of the VP nose dive at -14 VP and a couple cards into Turn 7 the VPs currently stand at +3 US (good scores in South America and Europe helped bring me back). This is particularly exciting as I've only had one game of TS ever make it to Late War so I'm really looking forward to next turn.

This is on the table right now, I'm going to solo a few turns before a f2f later this month. I've only played once before, this is my first time out as game teacher for 2nd Fleet. A lot of cool stuff in the rules, this is a pretty good naval/air consim that covers a lot of the bases that it should. I predict that I'm going to have a lot of fun playing this again.

Lost a game of Washington's War as the British in 1779. I had focused my attention in the northeast, while the Americans dominated the south. At the start of 1779 I controlled 7 colonies, but the year was a disaster. I drew the 1779 war ends card, but only 3 operations cards and no useful events to go with it. My opponent captured two colonies with his last two card plays and I was helpless to prevent it.

I know a lot of people seem to think that the British are easier to play for new players, but personally I feel that I play the Americans much better. My British generals tend to get tied up guarding Rhode Island and Delaware and I've never had much luck isolating American PCs since the Americans can always just pop up a reinforcement in the middle of any threatened group.

I am just finishing up. Started the game during the end of June and I am writing an AAR for Strategy & Tactics Press.

The game is basically a three day invasion of Oahu starting on December 7 1941.

It includes units from the IJN and the US Navy, CV's and BB's as well as carrier aircraft.

agreed to a game on Vassal. I took the CP. Overwhelmed by the strategic and tactical options, I opted to simply hammer the French since it looked like I had a military advantage on that front. Thanks to some hot dice, I've degraded the French military strength a bit although I've been fairly cautious with my advances (the supply rules still have me spooked, especially since the Allies always get to play last). The East hasn't seen much action yet, but we're only in the middle of September 1914.

On a side note, Michael first offered to play a game on Vassal because of reading my post on this list in May. So this list not only records games played, it generates future plays as well!

I played this game at Convergence 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota with YoungGrognard. It does a good job of being a game, and maybe even of being a good simulation, but it didn't do what I was looking for in a wargame. The lack of distinction between sides made it feel very generic and the luckless combat system only contributed to that. The visual presentation and overall scope and feel of the game was wonderful though. Not something I see myself playing again any time soon, but I'm glad I played it.

Another game I played at Convergence 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Again, I played YoungGrognard's copy of this great game.

I liken this to be the SCS-series style game of Napoleonics. A simple hex and counter game with straightforward mechanics and uncomplicated scenarios made for an excellent game that can be played in under three hours. I look forward to adding a copy of games from the Days series to my own collection. Probably my favorite game I played all weekend.

I just picked this up at a Half-Price Books in St. Louis Park, Minnesota for $10. Amazing deal, the pieces are all there, and I'm already starting the game.

This is a solitaire game of the raid on the St. Nazaire port during WWII. I don't know a lot about the historical situation, but right now my ships are getting cut to ribbons by the harbor defenses. Part of me wonders just how many troops will actually set foot on soil.

I think this game has legs though, I can see where it should be a lot of fun to play once I get the sequence down and build a certain rhythm to the game.

I'm playing this one via VASSAL and the Wargameroom.com client. I'm on the fence as to whether this is a good game or not. At this time, I'm leaning towards no. For some reason, it's just not striking me as terribly fun. The cards don't provide much in the way of variation to the game, and when they do, they can really mess up an opponent. It's almost like there is too much swing to the game. The CRT provides results which feel either under or over powered.

We're going on to playing a full campaign game in the near future. I'm hoping the game will save itself in extended play, but I don't think it looks good at this time.

Played my first game of this face to face last week. We were planning on playing the full campaign (or until we ran out of time whichever came first), but Oda died in battle on turn 10 to bring the game to an early end. This was a lot of fun; I especially enjoyed rioting across the board with my warrior monks. We both enjoyed the game quite a bit - the chit activation system is always exciting and the betrayal rules add a lot of uncertainty and tension, but, man, Oda sure seems to have a tough time of it. The Oda side was already in serious trouble by turn 10 and the Mori and Uesugi clans hadn't even arrived yet. Either we were playing a rule wrong (definitely possible as the rulebook is vague in places) or the Oda strategies are less apparent than those for the anti-Oda faction. At least I hope it's one of those two things and not a problem with play balance.

Yes, I know that it is being in the list for two months, but it has a few features that slow it down!

- I play it on Vassal, and it always takes me time to play on vassal.
- I play it solitaire, so whenever there is another opportunity to play a game this gets pushed down.
- I had never played M:TG but I bought the computer version. I am hooked.

ASL Scenario S1 - Fighting Withdrawal.

I'm the Russians and I have had some decent rolls in DFF, with some failed MCs by the Finns. I just abandoned the front row of buildings, except a concealed squad that got caught in melee by a CX Finnish HS when I blew an ambush roll. They are dead, but otherwise I am intact and have the roads covered pretty well. This scenario has some burning buildings and the fire has started to spread, which will slow the Finns down a bit.

I've also got this one set up on the table. I am about to start Case Blue but perspective look grim for the germans.

To know the reasons why this game is still un-ended see above.

Future games:

From the 22nd ot the 26th of July I attend to a gathering of friends and we have already scheduled a game of Europe Engulfed.

I have just bought Tunisia off ebay to a Portuguese guy and it will be arriving this weekend or monday (I'll get this one off the table and Tunisia in).

I want to play a game of full ASL I am thinking of playing The Guards Counterattack solitaire unless someone volunteers for a PBEM with a newbie.

Wolfgang (Alphawolf) and I still have a promised game to play once things settle.

I don't know if Normandy'44 will be here this month....
