I love wargames and I enjoy games like World in Flames and OCS. However over the last few years I've disovered a plethora of games that are simple to play and have innovative rules and/or mechanics.

I thought this geeklist may be useful to new players (or old hands like myself) who are looking for a new challenge but are unsure where to start. I've seen some other geeklists covering low complexity wargames or light battle games, but the lists have either aged or have a lot of games which are out of print.

As such the scope of this geeklist is:

(1) The game must be in print and commercially available now.

(2) You must have played the game.

(3) The game must be low complexity.

(4) The game must have a mechanic that made you think "cool!" *edit* or it can be demonstrated the game has a solid set of rules.

(5) It must be a hex and counter wargame, a block wargame, or a war-themed game like Memoir'44 that has a distinct combat or 'battle' phase in the rules.

Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to your contributions!

PLEASE NOTE THIS LIST IS NO LONGER BEING MAINTAINED, SEE Small, Simple and Soloable Conflict Games

Im gonna go on a limb here. This game is a family game with wargame mechanics! Ever want to play a wargame and your kids hate it?
TRY THIS ONE

(1) The game must be in print and commercially available now. Yes

(2) You must have played the game. Yes

(3) The game must be low complexity. Yep

(4) The game must have a mechanic that made you think "cool!". Lemmings getting eaten by eagles with card driven events that can be applied to your enemy? lol

(5) It must be a hex and counter wargame, a block wargame, or a war-themed game like Memoir'44 that has a distinct combat or 'battle' phase in the rules.

Its themes, its fun, its light, it has wargame mechanics. Zone of controls. I think all wargamers should try this game at least once!

I was curious about the siege because my father in-law's dad was mortally wounded in Leningrad (for the bad guys) and was pleasantly surprised with the game.

This is a nifty little game with straightforward rules, easy set-up, small map and doesn't take a weekend to play. If your cat jumps on the table you won't mind starting fresh. Its got basic war game elements like ZOC and supply lines to consider. It solos well because you don't know the Soviet attack and defense strengths until they fire or are fired on, and they mostly just respond to the Nazis. It's tough to eek out a Nazi win, but there are alternate rules posted on BGG to adjust. You can definitely learn basic strategy to take to bigger games.

A rather simple game following the 3-4 day track of convoys from Gibraltar and Alexandria to Malta in the face of Stukas, torpedobombers, high-altitude Italian bombers, MAS torpedo boats, U-boats and Italian submarines, and the Italian navy.

Battleships and carriers (usually) in single ship units, cruiser divisions, and convoys. 10th Army's/Afrika Korps' progress ... or retreat ... inversely proportionate to Malta's strength.

One representational convoy each may start from G and A per season - 11 seasons total, unless Malta falls or Alamein or Tripoli fall.

Summer 1940 and Operation Pedestal (Summer 1942) scenarios or campaign game.

An innovative mechanic is that the level of Allied convoy efforts is dependent on how desperate Malta's plight is, which aids in play-balance.

I am in love with this game and cannot get it to the table enough. Handsomely produced, to me it is the perfect hybrid of chess, poker, and an epic political novel.

Mechanic: Once yearly players, as major powers, bid (or bluff) from their hand of cards to reify and/or nullify a tableau of political events.

Aaaah...Memoir'44. When I first opened the box and read the rules I thought I made a big mistake and purchased a kids game. How can these mechanics work Mr Borg!?

Oh boy was I wrong. Memoir'44 is a very basic system, but its greatest strength is its simplicity. Additional rules can be laid on top without breaking the game. That in itself is a thing of beauty. Mr Borg, I salute you.

Mechanic: Rock Solid foundation

I understand that one mechanic is that it limits the amount of traffic that can travel down a road per day. Also being a block game it has limited intelligence and that it is two player or three player.

I think this sci-fi war-themed game belongs on this list. First, it has a defined "battle" phase. But it is also simple to play, and can certainly play deeper than it looks. Plus, it's fun!

The mechanic that makes me say "cool" is the way the game builds tension between battles. Units get placed on the board, but don't attack until someone plays a battle tile. Until the battle phase occurs, units point their guns and various weapons at each other in an old-fashioned mafia standoff. When the battle starts, it is resolved in order of which units have the highest initiative rating (0-3). This ordered resolution sets up a puzzle that develops between each battle, as you want to have units with higher initiatives attack units with lower initiatives, but you also have to factor in units with ranged attacks, units with special modules that give them bonuses, units with extra durability, units with custom abilities such as movement, double attacks, double damage, and more. With custom armies available for download, the variety of battle strategy is immense. It is simple to teach, but hard to master. And it plays in 30 minutes or less!

This is a great little game I had the first chance to play last night.
It has the simplicity in design that the Columbia Block games have but even less rules.

Rules are very simple. Maybe 6 pages?
Seems it would have good replay ability
Nice looking board and bits
