Continuing our journey back through time, we now come to the 1960's, a decade full of its own classics, some I like and several I do not.

This is not to say that there is a shortage of excellent films here. There most certainly is not. But if I am honest the order of the top ten is more fluid here than anywhere else as these movies are, to me, almost all on equal footing of greatness. The biggest problem I had was that it was unavoidable that one director was bound to get two slots near the top, and there were three other directors who just barely avoided having two in the top ten, not to mention two movies with "Doctor" in the title.

Below I describe my own top ten films of this decade, and I discuss the ordering more here than usual.

Feel free to add your own to the list. My entries are in ranked order, but anything anyone else adds is ordered as it arrives.

All the lists:

My Fair Lady
dir: George Cukor

The musical is not my favorite genre, but it is one that can soar to heights when it works that other movies cannot hope to achieve, and My Fair Lady is my favorite by far out of all of them. It has impeccable casting and acting and writing taken from the brilliant play by Shaw, and of course there are the wonderful songs, each one a classic. The story of the guttersnipe who becomes a lady itself is at essence a fairy tale, but it is told with extraordinary wit and irony and its wonderful subdued romance.

High and Low
dir: Akira Kurosawa

One of the very best of the greatest filmmaker of all time (perhaps excluding Alfred Hitchcock), this movie surprised the hell out of me when I first saw it. First a tense story of a kidnapping and then a tense story of hunting down the kidnappers and the ransom money, the movie is just as much about the strata of society and the value of human beings. It's slick and fun and fascinating, everything movies should hope to be. Watch the ending and tell me you don't get chills.

Yeah, the other great Kurosawa film of the decade, there's probably no film more viscerally entertaining and fulfilling than the violent story of a town of bad people set against each other by a clever ronin. Flawless.

And if you're still wincing from the choice of My Fair Lady as my top film, then this one should alleviate the pain a bit.

The Flight of the Phoenix
dir: Robert Aldrich

OK, continuing to make up for the top entry, we come to a movie with 100% testosterone count (excluding visions of women, of course). A plane crashes in the desert and there's no hope of rescue, so the survivors must give it their all to rescue themselves. How, you ask? By rebuilding the plane and flying it out of there. Terrific.

Also, if you've never seen it, it does have one of the best "holy crap" moments in movie history, which I will not ruin for you.

Speaking of testosterone. This is basically "Flight of the Phoenix in Jail." Only "The Shawshank Redemption" rivals this movie as far as prison-flicks go. It's exceptional. You will never forget the boast "I can eat 50 eggs." For my money, Paul Newman and George Kennedy give perhaps the best acting performances of the decade in this one.

Doctor Zhivago
dir: David Lean

The greatest film of the master of the epic spectacle. Set during the time of the first World War and through the Russian revolution, the visual storytelling in the movie is unparalleled (except perhaps by Lean's other 60's masterpiece). Like all great movies, it's more than the sum of all its parts and one that exhibits many wonderful little bits like the walls of ice forming on the side of the train or the last half of the last cigar in Moscow or Klaus Kinski shrieking "lickspittle, bureaucrat!"

Psycho
dir: Alfred Hitchcock

The classic suspense film that spawned far too many inferior copycats and then copycats of copycats (all the way to the point of a shot-for-shot remake!), but none have the precision and sleek dread that this original gins up from early on, shocking even after multiple viewings. My pick for the best of the master of suspense's 60's films, though I can be persuaded that Marnie or The Birds are worthy contenders.

OK, so I am robbing any one of the trio of Lawrence of Arabia, one of the most visually impressive and beautiful films ever, The Apartment, a key end-of-50s-start-of-60s film, or 2001: A Space Odyssey, the most important science fiction movie ever made, to indulge my inner-child and make sure that my favorite James Bond movie gets its due.

I love a lot of the Bond movies, but this one has got it all, the best Bond, the best villain, the best henchman, the best car, the best crazy plot, and, of course, Pussy Galore. Now that I think about it, this should be higher on the list...

The Hustler – 1961
Dir. Robert Rossen

Starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. Possibly my favourite sports movie although I have never been a fan of pool or snooker. A very gritty, down in the gutter portrayal of professional pool, naked ambition and the seedy side of the gambling world. Newman is in a hurry to get somewhere and is prepared to cut corners in order to do so without really considering the full potential of failure and it’s consequences. Gleason is absolutely superb as Minnesota Fats, the man at the top of his game and determined to stay where he is, no matter what.

The 60's, at least for me, are synonymous with the French New Wave. Though it's tempting to list a Godard film, I find that the one that has aged best for me and the one that I find myself coming back to most often is this one. The wonderful colors, excellent songs and heartwarming story all make this one a winner. Catherine Deneuve is at her best and even though there's a lot to complain about with Gene Kelly's performance, I still really like it.

The Party – 1968
Dir. Blake Edwards

I absolutely love this film. Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards crowning achievement in comedy. To quote directly from the back of the DVD

“When accident prone Indian actor Hrundi V. Bakshi (Sellers) manages to blow up an expensive Hollywood movie set – just seconds before it’s scheduled to be blown up on film – the director calls a studio executive to have the actor placed on the blacklist. A clerical error, however, places Bakshi on the A-list instead and earns him an invitation to the studio executive’s swanky party. Once there, he manages, with nothing but the best intensions, to create disaster.”

Like a line of dominoes, once things start to go wrong there is no stopping the ensuing chain of events. Go to love those birdy num num’s.

In my opinion, this is among the greatest screenplays of the entire James Bond franchise. Despite the bad rap George Lazenby has received, his performance as Bond is respectable. And leading lady Diana Rigg is stunning.

If you wish to make your girlfriend/wife/SO a fan of James Bond, this is the movie to show first.
