While I'm not a Trekkie (or Trekker, if you prefer) I do love to watch Star Trek when it's on my TV. Feel free to put down your favorite episodes of the various series.

My favorite episode of Star Trek from any of the series, hands down, is The Doomsday Machine from the Original Series (hereafter referred to as TOS). The Enterprise intercepts a distress beacon from sister ship Constellation and goes to investigate. Finding a Constellation a crippled hulk Captain Kirk and the crew quickly discover that its commander, Commodore Decker, is the last man on the ship and that there's a planet killing automaton roving about destroying everything in its path, including Federation vessels (and perhaps one's sanity). A tight, fast paced, and thoroughly interesting episode with a great soundtrack to boot.

Right after The Doomsday Machine my next favorite episode would have to be the TOS episode Balance of Terror, the first time the Romulans are introduced to the series. The episode is essentially a redo of the film Run Silent, Run Deep with the Enterprise playing the part of the Destroyer Escort and the Romulan ship the part of the submarine. Still, great stuff. Also Mark Lenard's foray as a Romulan (he was also a Vulcan and Klingon in various incarnations).

Considered by many fans to be the turning point for the still fledgling Star Trek: The Next Generation (hereafter referred to as TNG), it was the two-parter The Best of Both Worlds which really cemented Star Trek's revival among fans and brought in new fans as well. The Borg, a cyborg race from a distant part of the galaxy encountered in Season 1, is bent on the subjugation and assimilation of all humanity. The Borg would prove to be popular and dynamic foes for the Federation of the years.

Star Trek: Voyager was a good show, in my opinion, but I have to admit that of all the episodes I loved Scorpion the best. Voyager, on its long trek home, crosses into Borg space. Surprised when the Borg bypass their ship and speed off, Voyager soon discovers that the Borg have bitten off a bit more than they can chew with interdimensional Species 8472, who stunningly bat the Borg (who are seemingly invincible) aside and blow up a Borg planet in a stunning display of power. Janeway decides to pitch her lot in with the Borg in exchange for safe passage through Borg space. She finds out that the Borg don't stick to their deals...

Many of the critically acclaimed episodes contain too much of Roddenberry's "preaching" but three of my favorites from the orignal series are:

Space Seed (Khan*)

I, Mudd (Harry Mudd and the android women)

The Trouble With Tribbles

*Best line by Khan (and I'm paraphrasing) comes from the scene with his female admirer, the ship's historian: "Such men of power dare take what they want!"

As a little kid in the 70's we had two or three channels depending on the weather......so Star Trek on Sundays was a big highlight during my week.

I know some Star Trek folks feel the "creature of the week" phase produced some of the worst episodes ever, but I loved them. In particular I loved the Gorn battle most of all.

Bamboo, sulfur, charcoal and diamonds.......MacGyver can kiss Captain Kirk's ass as far as I'm concerned.

You guys have covered many of my favourites from the original series already. Since we can't have the DSN fans slinking away, I will pick my fav from that series, "Blood Oath".

This is the one where the three elderly Klingons show up on the station to meet with Dax. It turns out that in their younger days (when Dax was a fella) they had made an oath to find and kill the "Albino", who had murdered the Klingons' eldest sons or some such. Dax had been a godfather of one of the boys. It took many years, but the location of Mr. Albino had been found and they were gathering to finish the deed.

The moral question brought forth in the story was interesting, but what really got my attention was that the Klingons were characters from the original series played by the same actors! How nerd cool is that? Plenty I tell you....plenty.

They did not explain how the old Klingons had morphed those forehead ridges between the original series and DSN though....hmmmmmmmm.....

My favorite episode was "The Inner Light" from Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 5. In this episode, Picard is "affected" by an alien probe and while unconscious for just 20 or 30 minutes, he "dreams" a whole lifetime spent living on a dying world before it's sun went supernova over 1,000 years ago. He's married, raises a family, and becomes adept at playing the flute. It was an enchanting and well-written episode that was the first television program since the original Star Trek episode to win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (in 1993). It's been reported that this was Patrick Stewart's favorite episode, and Wil Wheaton's as well. On a trivial note, the actor who played Picard's son in the "dream" was Daniel Stewart, the real life son of Patrick Stewart...

ST:TNG episode 102, "Darmok," in which we meet the Tamarians.

The plot was okay, but metaphorical language, and the problems of dealing with a race that uses it, fascinate me. "Darmok" was my first exposure to the idea.

SF that entertains is nice and all, but give me SF that makes me think.

My favorites of the original series tend to be the episodes that were played for laughs. For example:

The Trouble With Tribbles

Not quite my favorite episode (see the next entry for that), but still a lot of fun. Shady characters? Check! Klingons? Check! A knockdown/dragout barroom brawl? Check! One of the most annoying Fedaration officials ever depicted on the series? Check! (Played brilliantly by William Schallert, best known as Patty Duke's father on her TV series). Spawned a brilliant sequel on Deep Space Nine.

A Piece of the Action

My favorite Trek episode. The Enterprise pays a belated visit to Delta Iotia 4 to investigate potential "contamination" by a ship called the Horizon years before, only to find a society patterned after Chicago gangs of the 1920s, courtesy of a book accidentally left behind by a Horizon crew member. Lots of great scenes and belly laughs. Not great art, but certainly great fun.

Best of Both Worlds is tough to beat when it comes to TNG episodes, but one of my favorites has always been "Cause and Effect".

The Enterprise gets caught in a time loop that results in the ship's destruction. The same cycle keeps repeating, but over time the crew starts to feel déjà vu, to the point that they eventually start being able to "predict" things that are about to happen. I love the scene where they're playing poker and everyone starts calling the cards as they're dealt. Also noteworthy is the fact that, once they escape the loop, the captain of the other ship turns out to be Kelsey Grammer!

The episode also had one of the greatest opening teasers in Trek history. surprise If this didn't make you want to keep watching to figure out what the hell was going on, I don't know what would:

My favorite TOS - Obsession

Three red shirts killed (hemoglobin drained) before the opening credits. (One of the three died after the credits from this injury.) Most in any show?

The monster gets in the Enterprise's ventilation system. (Bones: Nice work Jim. Your monster is not hanging on your wall, it's IN IT!)

Spock survives attack by the monster. (Bones: I bet your copper based blood left a bad taste in its mouth.)

Spock and Bones go to Kirk's quarters and start following official protocol for challenging a commander's competence. (Kirk: Forget the manual and ask your damn questions.)

The most dramatic TOS beam up sequence. Scotty had warned Kirk that he couldn't be responsible for someone beaming up during an antimatter explosion. Spock cross circuited to A and cross circuited to B to bring them in as the camera (ship) shook.

Don't forget the antimatter explosion, some back story on Kirk's first commanding officer, the Enterprise chasing at Warp 8, the monster dodging the phaser blasts...

At the risk of drawing ire from the "diehard" Trekkies/Trekkers...

"In a Mirror, Darkly" - the 2-part episode from season 4 of Enterprise

The show had already been cancelled (AKA "not renewed for another season") and the writers knew it, so they just went nuts and did all the crazy-awesome stuff that they'd always wanted to do, and really should have been doing back when it still mattered.

It was just fantastic from start to finish. They had brilliant tie-ins and references to stuff all over the franchise, from the ending scene of "First Contact", to the original classics "Mirror, Mirror" and "The Tholian Web". They actually rebuilt the entire Constitution-class bridge of the Defiant, and got so picky with the details that the bodies strewn across the bridge matched the locations they were in when the Defiant disappeared back in "The Tholian Web". They even threw in a CGI Gorn!

On top of everything else, since the episodes were set *entirely* within the Mirror universe they completely re-did the opening title sequence and theme song to match.

Enterprise certainly had its faults, but when it comes to favorite Star Trek episodes of all time, this one ranks right up there with "The Best of Both Worlds" and all the greatest episodes of TOS as far as I'm concerned.

Even if you never had any interest in Enterprise (or you gave up watching it at some point), you need to at least see this pair of episodes - get it on Netflix or something if you have to.
