Leaves are turning and the weather is getting cooler here in New England. Time to get some more games on the table!

Just a suggestion - if you happen to see the game you are playing already in the list, may I humbly suggest you just add a comment rather than a new entry? Only a suggestion, mind you, and you don't need to go on a Quest(tm), but it would give the rest of us an idea of what games are really being played.

Wow, so this is my first official game of SPQR. I have been playing the Alex Deluxe a lot via VASSAL. I use the SGBoH rules. I made,2 2 minute vids about it.

One here: of the experience.

Lets just say that the battle followed history at the start and for the first time since I have played SGBoH a Leader dies and Pyrrhus was his name. Can you spell irony?

If you are familiar with the battle of Heraclea its quiet a lil page turner, with ruses, deception, elephants, cavalry entering from off board and of course the Legions of Rome!

If any of you play GBoH or SGBoH please drop me a note, with skills advice. If you watch the stop motion video of the Battle of Heraclea parts 1 and 2, its just 4 minutes of video and see in the second vid at 2.23 the decimation of AS/VII, and the crushing Pyrrhic victory
Oh and here is the link at youtube for the 2nd vid. My session is still under review:
smashing fun!

I had my first game of this 2 weeks ago. I won the game with american at the end of the second year but we didnt quite get naval rules right (we missed a rules saying destroyed ships are removed from the game permanently and ships in the middle of the lakes must go to friendly ports during winter turns). I think this evening I'll have the rematch! Good game yet very simple!

I'm setting up another game of Yalu.
Last month I tried to take Seoul but failed BIG TIME.

Now with new tactics I'll see if this game is winable (not a word I guess) by the communists.

People wondering how it went the last time...Check out my session report.

I truly love this game!

About every 7-8 years or so I get the itch to put this classic back up on the table. This is one of my favorite "theme" games of all time.

Time investment to finish a campaign is quite large, to be sure. But it's one of the few games that really gives a fantastic "feel" for the entire course of a long war.

And it is possible for a smart, well-played US player to pull out a win on this one. But you better have a good solid gameplan and execute it from the start. Throwing masses of US troops and firepower at the VCs in rice paddies(who tend to melt away and disappear easily) is not your winning strategy.

Finally got on to Battle Pack #2 last night.

It was a brutal battle for the Russians. Hopefully Merricb will post a session report which I'll link here.

An early surprise reinforcement of a German IG made quick work on the green defenders! Also, drew 2x elim points. Very, very nasty...

Played Overlord for the first time last night. The deeper map requires a lot more movement and bringing up reinforcements.

We played French vs. the Germans with blitz rules in effect (slowing those B1-bis down to a crawl and providing more German Air Cover). It was a very close battle with 5 French units down to a single figure when the 10th German unit fell.

I glanced through the scenario book and I'm quite eager to play the Japanese scenario next. Beach landing combined with paradrops!

I've been trying to play this for over two years and finally got a chance to solo it this month.

Rules were not too complicated but there are A LOT of steps to go through each turn. Some of the player aids on this site were very helpful is flatening the learning curve.

I loved the game, especially the combat system. Very simple yet very elegant and flows really well.

My only potential complaint would be the playing time. It was taking me around 3 hours per turn for the first few turns. Even after I got the rules and turn sequence figured out, I was still averaging 1.5 hours per turn. With 16 turns in a game, that would be around 24 hours of play shake

Still, very enjoyable game and would highly recomend it for those who haven't tried it.

Going very slowwwwly since I'm so darn busy this time of the year. Hit the beaches in turn one and I am up to the end of allied turn 2. Brits doing well and starting to move inland. The Americans are still struggling to get off the beaches. 82nd and 101st Airborne are taking a beating since Utah and Omaha are bottled up so far.

Positions at the end of turn 2.

Currently, I'm looking for a VASSAL PBEM opponent for this game.

I finally decided to give VASSAL a try as I had been wanting to for a while now. Since my wife has announced that she wants to only learn/play ASL, I am left with a shelf of games that are begging to get played. So, my solution is to learn how to use VASSAL and then find fellow wargamers to play against!

I decided to start with No Retreat! as I love the game and it is easily one of the most manageable games I've played in a while.

So, here's to finding an opponent! Hopefully, whomever agrees to play will be understanding of my VASSAL newbiness!

Well, I pulled this game out again intending to start a campaign, but Mission 1 went horribly wrong. 4 KIAs and 3 Incapacitated troops caused me to end this one early with a -12 VP loss. I am beginning again - with the same squad, same Initiative values, same weapons, but re-rolling the stats. The new squad is even worse than the first one, but I'm hoping they don't get horrible rolls like the last lot.

The rules themselves are detailed but I'm hoping that setting it up and pushing some counters around will help me to understand them better.

. We played battle scenario 5. I took the Italians and Tim has the Austrian-Hungarians. He then proceeded to send the Italian fleet to the bottom of the ocean. I had one ship that actually had 7 fires going. I lost count how many critical hits we had between us, but the Italians seemed to get the worst of it. We closed to short range quickly and there was some deadly fire given most of the ships were battleships. The Italians also took a couple of torpedo hits that each resulted in 5 hull hits. Still a fun game, as we must have gotten about every roll result possible. I even had one ship that took some serious damage on a critical hit by a tertiary gun.

And we used the tactical rules included in GWAS: Dreadnought. The consensus is these are far superior to the original tactical rules. I never played the original rules, so I can't compare the rules, but the Dreadnought rules seem pretty good.

Picked this up just a few days ago. Aquired it because my regular opponents had lost interest in Russian Campaign (RC). "Too old and out of date", they would say.

Run through it twice solo so far. It is remarkably like RC. L2 design is right. If you like RC than you'll love this game. The map is exceptionally well done. Sturdy construction. The counters are 9/16" and that's definately easier for these old eyes. Just enough extra stuff to make it better, but not too much to slow down the game.

Truly a worthy successor to Russian Campaign. Cudos to Art and the team at L2.

Setting up for a third time. My old RC opponent John is on his way here. Maybe a renewed interest?

Weird that I get to add this game as it normally appears before the first 50 games.

I managed to get half a game on monday night when a friend came over. With setting up, teaching the game rules and playing we got to play 4 full turns in 2 and a half hours before my opponent conceded (we both had to leave and he was definately on a bad position).

It is my second play of the game and I still find it more a game than a simulation, but I have appreciated some finer details that I couldn't on my first play. In particular, the order of play with the republic going second leaves the republican player unable to effectively mount an attack.

Nevertheless, a fine game.

We are doing a second run of this game now (about the Battle of Leyte Gulf) at Mark's house. Massachusetts sunk by kamakazi, not good. US carrier strikes have slowed the Japanese down enough that they cannot win (they have to force the two straits by a certain time) but we'll play next week to do the climactic surface battle...

I got a quick game in of this beauty this afternoon. I was poised for a political victory when the eastern army stormed Moscow and ended the game. As far as solo wargaming goes, this game is easy to learn and play and one of those titles I return to when I need a fast grognard fix.

Still hoping to find a VASSAL opponent for No Retreat!, and am considering picking up both Bulge 20 and The Barbarossa Campaign before too long.

I am back with my solo learning of OCS (if I did it with ASL I can do it with any three letter acronym game series).

Now I am trying to break the Mareth Line (scenario 5 I think). There are significantly more units than in the first scenario but there are less turns and much less manoeuvre, so I think it can be a good scenario to get the grips on OCS.
