Some Geeks say solitaire games aren't worth playing. ("If you have to play by yourself, why bother?") But I've found quite a lot of gaming enjoyment when just sitting alone with a good board game in front of me.

How 'bout you? Here's a chance to share some love for games that too often get shunned or neglected.

Add your favorites and share your positive experiences (or any other comments you feel a need to express). It's OK to list or comment on any game you've enjoyed playing by yourself--whether it's specifically designed for solitaire or not.

There are some discussion questions in the Comments section, for anyone interested.

Be sure to see this GeekList of SoloPlay variants.

Now...this is a great game. I'm shocked it has not been added yet. While its "sister" game Hapsburg Eclipse is also good, Ottoman Sunset is even better.

Great game, I liked ottoman's sunset better in terms of options and victory conditions. In this game I tend to keep winning (when I win, you lose quite often too, more so than Ottoman's Sunset) a political victory, I have never managed a military victory for some reason... It is very hard to survive the deck of cards. Its a good state of siege game, highly recommended.

In fact I have won a 7 turn game, blasted the scoring. Kept rolling 6 on the die for a political action and won in no time.

Not for the faint of heart - but the programmed rules make it rather straight forward to learn - though it will take some time to play the learning scenarios. I tackled this one this year and it really is a classic solo game for a reason. Excellent AI - fog of war is incredible. If you are into the PTO and Carrier battles this is a must have.

All I can say is: stop reading my comments and go print them cards out and give this game a try. Its pretty elegant and a great little puzzle. Once you have worked your head around the rules, you can pick this game up anywhere anytime on a small notepad. Great game with tonnes of potential.

I rated this a 6.5 (I am stingy with points so 6.5 isn't that bad) I would give this a 7 if it had a commercial quality board and pieces, looking at the homemade boards people have made, I will probably try making one myself one day.

My most recently played solitaire game. I've played it three times (losing badly each time), and it was lots of fun.

Purchasing this game motivated me to read the novel it's based on. The game tells the story from a completely different perspective (Nemo's), and I'm glad it does. It works very well and ends up telling a different story--or the same story in various ways.

As in many solitaire games, you have lots of little decisions to make, and your long-term survival depends on making good choices. But there's a measure of chance to contend with too, in the form of dice and adventure cards.

Nemo's motivation is unclear in the novel, and that's represented in this game by a choice (or random selection) of four motivations--basically four different paths to victory. The player will have to use the Nautilus to sink ships in any case, but that need not be the primary objective.

I'm finding it quite a challenging game.* But besides the challenge, there's also the opportunity to vicariously live the events described in the novel--to travel the seven (well, six, actually) seas, explore the depths, find sunken treasure, liberate oppressed peoples, utilize scientific marvels, and defy the naval might of imperialist powers.

*PS--For those who are smarter than I am, there's an expansion kit which includes a way to make NW even far more challenging.

I bought this Sid Sackson classic-to-be (in some people's opinion, anyway) partly because of its solitaire suitability. So far, though, I've only played it as a two-player game. I figure that if my wife takes to it, she'll want to play less often than I will, so I'll be able to practice solo in between two-player sessions. (She usually beats me, especially at newer games, so I need all the practice I can get.)

I like this game better than Scrabble, but that's not saying much; I've never liked Scrabble anyway. IIRC, I prefer Anagrams, but it's been forty years since I've played that.

I'd had my eye on this game for years before I ever looked into it. Earlier this year I finally bought a copy and played it. A few solitaire scenarios are included.

Now I see why others have said this game is so great. It really brings naval warfare of this period to life in vivid, up-close detail. Detractors might call it tedious, excruciating detail--and many people might prefer to play a game like this on the computer nowadays. But I find that it really engages my imagination as I fill out the record sheets and diagrams for each ship, then closely track every hundred yards of movement and the loading and firing of each gun.

The plotted simultaneous movement system may not be ideal for solitaire, as you can't very well outguess yourself, but this game still does an admirable job of providing a player with the vicarious hands-on experience of naval combat action.

Shot and Shell expands the game to include land actions and also clarifies or enhances many features of the original game.

This has to be one of my favorite solitaires also. Also designed by DVG for GMT at the time, it came after the original Hornet Leader and has some borrowed mechanisms from that game, but in my opinion much improved and on many levels a very different game and gaming experience. You are still charged with arming a squad of Warhogs & Apache for missions, but there is terrain now and line of sight. The game is 100% campaign, where each mission results will affect later missions. The game flow is really good, time to play is adjustable by the player, so it can be quick or slow. Like Phantom Leader there are lots of meaningful decisions to be made and the game will get progressive harder depending which missions you pick. The missions/targets have a randomize factor to make for reasonably good replayability.

I love it and look forward to a remake by DVG games which I am sure will be coming on heels of the Hornet Leader II.

It's a unique game design: you start out playing one side in the war, but if you manage to turn the game in your favor, you have to switch and play the other side.

the one thing you lose is combat between all the other players, so no competition. But not much of a loss really... You could play this without the competition for a full multi=player co-op experience as well.

I love this game, it really does make a good simulation of ship hunting in the Pacific war and I love playing this game. I just recently downloaded the Campaign rules from the old AH General magazine, I can't wait to get a campaign going. (the game was really missing a big story/mission behind the play initially). Like all battleship type wargame, its not for everyone, this game garners the same complaints as Carrier! & the new Silent War Game, for periods of inactivity. For me these periods are periods of tension as you anticipate that next big engagement that may send you to a watery grave.

Great game and now that I just found an old but expensive copy of Carrier! its spiritual successor I can't wait to play that too! Love love love. Highly recommended and a totally underrated game!

I've attempted to add this game three times to the list and each time it's appeared on this page. Why does that happen?

Skyline is quite the fun little dice game that can be played solo.
Fun theme with attractive components.

Solitaire play consists of playing nine rounds and achieving highest points.
40 Points = Project Manager
....
100 Points = Urban Overseer

As well, there are solo scenarios for a player to complete.
From the rulebook:

Dubai: Finish with a least three Buildings of Height 3.
Essen: Finish without using the "Demolish" action.
New York: Finish with at least two Buildings of Height 5 or 6.
Sao Paolo: Finish with at least four Buildings of Height 4.
Shanghai: Finish with no Low-Rise Buildings built.
Toronto: Finish with only 7 total Buildings built.
Tucson: Finish with no High-Rise Buildings built.

I might as well toss a little love toward this game. The poor thing has been sitting in its little space on closet shelves through several moves I've made in the past twenty-five years. I haven't played it since it was brand-new, but I still remember it being a fun and interesting game. (Somehow it has survived two or three big game purges.)

Every once in a while I'll pull it down off the shelf, sort through the components, and skim the rulebook. But then I end up thinking, Nah--it'd be so much easier to just play a computer game.

That's one problem with some solitaire games (maybe older ones especially): you have to run a manual AI as you play. I minded that a lot less before I got used to the home computer. Now I'm spoiled.

As I recall, though, Mosby's Raiders is a pretty elegant design. I may just have to follow through and play it again one of these days.

Very similar experience to that of B-17, mechanics are pretty much the same. I like B-17 better for a couple of reasons, first B-17 was actually innovative at its publication and secondly I like the bombing missions over Europe more, just seems more dangerous than what the Americans had to deal with in an already shattered Japan. This is evident in the game play, which is a testament to both game's great design to simulate the situation respectively.

But having just said that, I really like B-29 as well, the chrome is slightly different and there is more emphasis on Navigation and Fuel consumption instead of fighting off attacks. Not to mention that this one is still in print.

Two thumbs up.
