Some Geeks say solitaire games aren't worth playing. ("If you have to play by yourself, why bother?") But I've found quite a lot of gaming enjoyment when just sitting alone with a good board game in front of me.

How 'bout you? Here's a chance to share some love for games that too often get shunned or neglected.

Add your favorites and share your positive experiences (or any other comments you feel a need to express). It's OK to list or comment on any game you've enjoyed playing by yourself--whether it's specifically designed for solitaire or not.

There are some discussion questions in the Comments section, for anyone interested.

Be sure to see this GeekList of SoloPlay variants.

I traded for this a while back, played it, and wrote up a short review of it. Liked it well enough that I just bought the expansion. Now I have to make time to play it again.

It's part of VPG's States of Siege series of solitaire games.

Here is a little gem of a game found in issue #14 of Command Magazine, that plays under three hours and re-enacts a very interesting battle with a surprising degree of accuracy, the system is really good and plays well both solitaire and with 2 players. I think naval warfare tend to work very well to solitaire rules and this is one of those cases. Very exciting, I like to think of this game as the time-lapse version of Pacific War, all those months of intensity all compacted into an evening. I strongly recommend anyone to try this title out if they like naval warfare.

I have to give some love to my first game and all its solitaire goodness. I was very lucky to have a company like Victory Point Games and a solid structure created by Darin A. Leviloff and Alan Emrich to work from. It was such a pleasure to work on something and then get to see people play and enjoy it.

I've created lesson plans to go with it and have used Levee with several of my high school classes. It's been great to hear from other teachers that have used it as well. I also love that this game is going to be fully converted into a French language version.

Here is an oldie by a goodie, having a degree in astrophysics and growing loving the enigma of space, I loved the idea behind this game and I think its executed quite well too. Its another simulation of the space race during the cold war where the player(s) are competing to land on the moon. Its surprisingly detailed and great fun solitaire or multi-player. Highly recommended.

A great OOP pocket game. It is designed solitaire. It is a total rip-off of the movie "Alien," but it is still great. It has great replayablity because the Alien morphs into various powers based on die rolls. Sometimes it is very easy, if he gets wuss powers, but it can be very hard if he gets strong powers. It has a lot of intrigue, is easy, and plays quick. A good cheap find on EBay.

I've only played this once, and it was solo. It's similar to Tales of the Arabian Nights, but it feels like there's more of an ongoing plot. I didn't play through the entire game, as I want to experience it with a group for that.

I wrote a session report to give you a feel for the game: City of the Red Night (A Session Report with Minor Spoilers). It feels like I self-promote the post too much, but I think it really gives a feel for this unique gem.

Most tabletop sports games get played solitaire primarily. Replay Baseball is my favorite. And it just came out with brand new components (not pictured here) that are super-nice.

Personally I like playing solitaire games as a relaxation, and tabletop sports games really scratch that itch. Since I'm managing or coaching both sides, I don't feel like I'm trying to "beat" the system. I'm in control of the whole little fake world.

I don't enjoy playing solitaire games where it boils down to beating the system. Most solitaire wargames are like this; I played a lot of Ambush back in high school, and recently I bought and played Field Commander: Alexander and didn't like them at all. I'm just not interested in figuring out how to max/min my stuff to win.

I still trot this out from time to time for a quick mission and especially enjoy playing through a "Bloody April" campaign. Tactical level air games a lend themselves well to solitaire wargaming as the "split personality" problem is limited in that each sides' objectives are clear-cut and it is simply a matter of playing each plane to best meet them. "Richthofen's War" also works for me because it is just the right weight -- not too simplistic or bogged down in a lot of rules minutia.

I am going to throw some odd balls from the left field, just to keep any newbie Solitaire players a taste of lesser known titles.

Here is one from my collection, it simulates the infamous stand at Rorke's Drift, its a little bit of a dice fest, especially towards the end, but I think the results of my game-play re-enactments are usually similar to what happened in real life. The Zulus get slaughtered but its still tough to match the history victory.

Here is an example of a solitaire where I wouldn't play more than 1-2 games once in awhile, but when I do I love it.

While there are rules to play co-op and competitively (which I haven't done yet) I can't stop playing this one solo, which seems to be the way it was designed.

I am looking forward to trying the other formats, but I believe that solo will be, by far, my favourite.

I have several that I love but I will post this one as it was a such a blast for a tactical gamer like me that I actually wore out my copy in about a year when I had it back in high school.

Not nearly enought small scale tactical board/wargames about let alone one's you can play solo.

Plus the VERY unusual concept and game play (you were a 'Nam solider lost in time!) made it a hoot.
