I was really excited to play this game, but let me preface this with I had played Ys first, which I absolutely love. I finally got a chance to play with a friend of mine who owned it, and boy howdy did this game SUCK.

This is one of those games that is the same thing over and over again for 1/2 to 2 hours. It has almost no "building" mechanisms, and it is a one trick pony. I hated that absolutely EVERYTHING was blind, and that absolutely everything on the board was a complete crapshoot. I felt the strategies employed here were completely thin, and I have no desire to ever play this again.

I love Tolkien and like John Howe, there's a world-class designer, and tons of raving reviews on the geek and about everywhere on the net. Got the game in a trade, was quite excited and tried it almost right away.

Already the rulebook is just horrible and you have to reread it twice before getting the point of this simple game. The little suns and stars also put me off a little, but I was still enthusiastic to play.I was really disappointed.

I mean, this game is really really unbearable. From the pasted-on theme to the horrible components ( sauron)passing by the nerve-racking gameplay that makes you feel like doing work rather than playing a fun game, the lord of the rings is perhaps not the worst, but definitely the game that makes me the most nervous on earth. As I tried the game a couple of times again, it just became worse and worse.

Traded it away after a couple of months of it safely looked in a lost cupboard in order for it not to sneak out and haunt my dreams.

This sounded like a game I'd like - love the theme, pretty to look at, described as RPG-Lite, and I was a huge fan of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books back in the day.

It just didn't click for us. The choose your own adventure element is there, lots of referencing charts and flipping in the book. The "story" of our characters wasn't catchy. No one cared if they were married or gender changed or whatever. We just stumbled along until someone was declared the winner. And the winner didn't feel as if they had accomplished anything.

Some people love it, I was hoping to be another in the club, but...not my cup of tea.

...But...

The first time I played it, I felt like I was missing something, or that we were obviously playing it wrong, because the alleged tension and excitement was absent. And there was a lot of die rolling and card luck.

The second time I played it was with someone who knew the game, so I was more certain we got everything right, but it still fell flat.

The last time (this week), not only was our 3P game kind of dull, but we realized that the entire game result literally depended on the single die roll for final free banish action:
5 or 6 I would win. I rolled a 5, and I did win.
3 or 4 I couldn't banish enough of the other players' cubes to put myself in first for the only truly swingable district, but it would have been enough to kingmake the lead away from one of the players to the other if I wanted to do that.
1 or 2 The player currently in the lead would have still won.

Maybe this is an unusual situation, but still felt like proof of the players' complaints throughout the session that there is "too much luck" in this game, especially if it can impact the results in a way that players have no way to respond to. You could argue that I deserved the chance at the win, having made sure I took the fewest limit cards and the chance to execute the final banishment, but if that's the case, then why only a 33% chance?

Pretty sure I'm trading this one away now, which is sad, because I do love to look at it. Anyone want a copy?

Ok so in the beginning of my board gaming hobby I realised I need some easy to learn games to play with nongamers. Also I wanted a thematic experience.

So on BGG recommendation forum this game was recommended to me.

The thing is:

a) it doesn't work for nongamers around here as nongamers around here (anybody I know or have talk to at my FLGS) like games to be interactive. It's tolerable if a 2 player games has less heavy interaction, but people here play games to have a social evening and this is just a too much on the solitaire side. No real interaction, just a race for VPs. Yay.

b) we didn't find it thematic at all. Maybe in euro terms, I dunno, but the thing is - all the architects are the same generic meeple, all the treasures are merely points, they don't give you any other bonus, all the knowledge is just numbers. The game doesn't create a story so I cannot call it thematic.

Bought this for same reasons and at the same time as Thebes (look at item above) - to have a filler to play with nongamers. And being a former MtG player the draft seemed like a good idea.

BUT

a) Scandinavian (originaly italian) edition has a bad case of iconitis which makes a 20 minute long explanation of a 15 minutes game. (as you have to desribe every icon on every card) shake Not suitable for nongamers.

b) drafting is added to what is basically set collection (or combinations collecting) which the more I think about it the more I find well insulting. Drafting in MtG was part of building a deck to DO something. Here the sets don't do anything, they just lie there and give you points. Yay.

c) drafting does not make a low interaction game more interactive and black cards, well, you can work around them, they're not much of a hassle.

Summary:
poitless set collecting with low interaction that is hard to explain.

I really liked the sound of 'lightning' game system. There are two turn tokens and you take your turn when you have one of the two tokens. Once you've had your turn, you pass on the token, so there's very little down time - in theory at least. The tokens keep moving around the table so it should be a quick exciting game.

Except it wasn't. It was a mess. I played with my other half and a couple of friends, one of whom really struggled with the speed of the game. Her turn was coming around quicker than she could take her first turn so it just didn't work out.

It's not hit the table since.

mbmbmbmbmb
[quoted from my entry in this month's new-to-you geeklist]

If you look at my profile you'll see that two of my gaming loves are card-combos and Wallace-style economic games, so combining the two sounded like a dream ticket. But the absolute killer for London is the lack of interaction. I've played three times now and felt like I barely looked up from my hand and tableau at the other players. Unlike Race and Glory to Rome, the type of action you choose doesn't really affect anyone else, and waiting for someone to run a 10-card city has the same feeling as drumming your fingers while a Village Idiot finishes their turn in Dominion.

It's also less thematically integrated than most Wallace designs, and feels like it falls into a set pattern of optimisation. Buy boroughs to fill your hand with cards, play as many cards as possible (using the display to make matching pairs), run your city while your hand is empty to make money to buy more boroughs and so on. And the board, while prettier than the usual Wallace, is almost an afterthought, which could be replaced by more cards or a list of payouts without losing much.

The poverty system is the highlight, and it does make for some interesting decisions about whether to have large and infrequent or small and frequent city runs. But the cards themselves aren't interesting enough, some are strictly better than others, it's very hard to tell who's winning or why, and it's twice as long as it needs to be, with a particularly painful endgame. Of the card combo games, it feels most like Innovation (because of the stacks, and the play/activate separation) but with less interesting cards and all the interaction taken out.

I see multiplayer solitaire bandied about quite a bit. This exemplified it to me. I really went into this game with high expectations, I'm a big fantasy fan, I enjoy D&D settings, adventure games, the stars aligned, but I found it lacking. We had little to no player interaction in our few games, the actual characters, items and monsters were a bit bland for my tastes, and I disliked the endgame for the most part. One redeeming factor is that one of my friends really took to this game for some reason during these few sessions, where it landed flat for the rest of us. So for that reason I keep it around. I have explored getting expansions for it but I can't get a good idea of what I should get to help my predicament, I haven't seen a good consensus.

I like Francis Tresham's games. I'm very interested in Dutch history. But, this much-anticipated game is so arbitary it only hit the table twice after I paid a considerable sum for it.
By 'Arbitary' I mean the mechanics seem to neither match the theme or make any sense. Why the limit on troops in an area, with the weird overflow mechanic? What does it mean? What is it meant to achieve?
The game is long, and success feels almost random. It probably isn't, but the things you're meant to be doing don't feel like the sort of things you should be doing.

Very, very dissapointed.

This is a good game, with an interesting theme, but not a whole lot of decisions to be made. It's usually pretty easy to figure out what to do. This is probably on the same level as Lost Cities for me.

mbmbmbmbmb
I sat on the table expecting the ultimate war fantasy game, with lots of bloody battles, alliances, backstabbing and epic ending, but It turned out to be an adventurish 'ok' game that hardly re-implemented his younger brother - Runebound.

I expected a full heated gameplay, with lots of interaction and intrigue (just like every war-named game should be), spiced with some thrilling battles, but it had the exact same feel of the predecessor - a barely warm game where you wander around trying to do stuff most of the time and, somewhere down to the end someone shouts: "I got the runes that I needed. Game’s over". The game can be summarized in doing quests and receiving runes in return and, eventually (and if you want) fighting something (or someone).

Heroes are dull as their phase is as well. They are only as good as to wander around and collect runes (well, apparently, that’s what the game’s all about). If they run across a battle they pretty much just pass by and wave goodbye (with the exception of one or two heroes). Combat is anticlimactic with all that tiny little cards and symbols you have to read and match to get the outcome. A total drab!

Don’t get me wrong. I tried. God knows how hard I tried to enjoy this game, but it is definitely not for me. So far I’ve played it 3 times for never more. I can’t help to get the feeling that it was built upon Runebound in an attempt to improve it, but it failed drastically. I can honestly say that, for me, both games feel the same (regardless of all that fancy card selection/efficiency bonus and asymmetrical forces stuff).

A wargame (??) in which you can win without battling your opponent even once shouldn’t have war in its name.

I realize that a lot of people people like this game -- and I expected to as well -- but this game just fell flat for me. I don't have a fundamental problem with games 'borrowing' themes or mechanics from other games, but I just feel as though the 'borrowed' items in Endeavor are more enjoyable and better executed in the originals. It all seems a tad boring. I don't hate this game, but I really wanted to like it and I don't.

Read about this game. Read the reviews.
A silly lighthearted game about revolutions.

Tom Vasel liked it! I was sold. At great cost I imported it to New Zealand.

The more I played the less I like it. The game is currently on long term loan, pending sale or games for geek gold giveaway.

I wish I could tell you what I don't like. It may be that the whole screens thing and the bidding mechanism. It may be it's not that silly. It is probably that it's just not exciting. It's a long yawn.

To misquote a song: Revolution sounds like a yawn.

Was looking for a game to play with non-gaming friends at get togethers. Read the reviews on this one and thought I had a winner. The group was completely underwhelmed with it. Despite attempts to make it a "game show", it fell flat.

Could have been the group, but I'm just putting this one out there.

I wanted to like this one. Great production, interesting theme. Lots of action and interaction.

Playing it makes me want to stab myself in the head with a pencil.

Sample:

"I'm losing this challenge, I have an idea! Why don't I randomly flip cards over? I win! I'm a genius! Everybody else throw your cards away too and pick something awful to happen to you! Repeat.

Full Confession: I'm terrible at this game and never win. whistle
So this could be just sour grapes.
