As is evidenced by the response to this thread and this geeklist the life of Jack Vasel has touched hundreds of hearts here on BGG. And, although that geeklist gives us an opportunity to offer assistance with our wallets, I just felt like there was more I could do to recognize the life of Baby Jack. As I'm sure is the case for most of the rest of you, I will be unable to pay my respects in person at the funeral Saturday.

So, I had a thought to make a memorial BGG-style. My goal is to create a way of honoring this life that we all cared about so much for the past 2 months. Here's my idea:

On Saturday, January 29th, around 2pm EST (when Jack Vasel's funeral will be) I encourage you to play a game with your kid(s). Every moment with them is precious, so grab hold of this particular moment and share your hobby with them. If you are like me and have no children (or for some reason your kids can't play) just play the closest thing you have to a kids game with someone else. If 2pm EST translates to a really strange hour for you, then feel free to adjust to some other time. The point isn't the actual timing of the game, it is the thought behind it.

EDIT: Note that it's never too late to play a game in memory of Jack. If you missed this list on Saturday, or haven't had an opportunity to game yet, feel free to add an entry later. Again, it's all about the thought, not the timeline.

On this geeklist simply post the game that you will try to play, and who you will play it with. Perhaps even throw in a kind word for the Vasel family when you post your entry. And, if you're so inclined, maybe you could have a little prayer or moment of silence prior to your game session.

In honor of Jack, my kids and I played a game of Hop, Hop, Hooray! this morning. They both outscored me as usual.

Vasel family - you've been in our thoughts and prayers today and we'll keep you there during the coming weeks. Thank you for sharing Jack's story with us - what a blessing he's been.

I just picked this up in trade, and will play it with my wife today. We always look for Tom's videos before we play any game for the first time. It makes the game so much more enjoyable than for me to try read the rules aloud.

I love that he includes his family in his videos, and that he's included us in his family in much the same way.

May this Irish blessing be of some solace:

May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.

May you always hear,
Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.

When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone.

May you always remember,
When the shadows fall,
You do not walk alone.

I wasn't certain I would get the chance before (was out of town on business); so this is an afterwards post. However, I made it back in time and got in a game of flux with my 3 year old and 8 year old. It was much fun.

Our families prayers are with your family right now Tom.

Tom, thank you for sharing your son with us.

I played my son a game of Citadels. It is one I haven't played that much for some reason even though I like it. I hadn't played it in over a year. I noticed it was one of Tom's top ranked games at 9.5, so I pulled it out. My son only played it for Jack (he didn't want to play it), but about half way through the game he exclaimed he really liked the game.

As I mentioned in this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/55397/item/1304204#ite... I went to my first game convention last year after my good friend's 8 year old boy died from cancer a week before. I decided I needed to spend more time with my son, so we went to Kublacon.

We played Citadels to take joy in what we had, and to reflect and mourn the loss of Jack.

I had a game day with the adults on Saturday, so on Friday night my son and i sat down for a rousing game of Minotaurus.

He loves this game, and i have to admit that its a fun one, and a great way to implement a lego-themed game.

I gave him my best game, not going easy on him, and my little man played hard and beat me in a very close game. It made his day

God bless you and yours, Tom...

I introduced my two boys (almost 4, and almost 2) to Heroscape this weekend in honor of Jack. I built a castle for them using a castle set, and laid out a relatively basic map with a road. My elder son got into the map building, and wound up building a lake on one side of the map. I put a few guys on the map, and staged a castle assault, but he took them off again. He said something about only wanting to use the "nice" guys. I'm not sure whether to be proud that he is apparently anti-conflict (although this clearly does not extend to interactions with his brother), or disappointed that it may be a little while longer before I can really play the game with him. My younger son spent most of the time driving his sheriff's truck along the road - I guess all his activation markers were on it. Not surprising, since it was big enough that it probably only needs to roll a 7+ on the d20 to crush any small or medium sized figure.

My younger son gave up first, and went back to the game closet to pick out Zooloretto, which is his current favorite. He likes loading the trucks, and playing with the coins. He "played" it 3 times this weekend.

Then my older son decided he wanted to play Cosmic Encounter. He laid out the big Alien cards (which have a picture of the Warp on the back in the FFG edition, and which, incidentally, used to be in alphabetical order), and said they were "suns", and that the spaceships needed a lot of them so they could see. Can't argue with that.

Dear Tom,
This Saturday my wife and I were not gaming, but training for our upcoming marathon (my other obsession). Running is the perfect activity for contemplation, and to give thought to not just your own life but also other's. My thoughts were with you, and what you and your family have to go through. I wish you all the best and wisdom for the coming time, and hope to hear you again soon on the Dice tower (but will in no way blame you if you decide to take a break).

Played this with my son and three of his friends. It was his 13th birthday party and his friends have looked rather enviously at my boardgame collection that is finely balanced on the shelves. It resulted in a hugely enjoyable game with the new expansions, and with some rather clever planning on my part, I managed to play it that the newbie to this game won!

There was a quiet point in the game where I just looked around at these boys recalling my younger days and the games I played with my dad. It all felt rather emotional and makes you realise how priceless these fleeting moments are in life.

All the best, Karl

Didn't see this list until it made the year end list. But wanted to contribute.

I am currently deployed to Cuba and was able to be home for Thanksgiving where we had just moved. The good thing about the new house was that we were finally able to get a bunch of games (as well as many many other items) finally out of storage.

The first game that Caden (my 7yr old) wanted to play was SpongeBob. Over the last week I was there we probably played this 6-7 times and played many other games as well.

But even though he usually kicks my butt in this game of Life I am very thankful everyday that we get to play when we do. Life is very short and one of my co-workers who was only 33 passed away here about a week ago and it really hits hard how every second is precious and live your life to the fullest.

Glad I could be a part of this list.
