I am relatively new to the geek. I have lurked around here and there but never really posted a whole lot. I don't know if there are a lot of these lists out there so I apologize in advance if this is something you see everyday.

I play a lot of PC Wargames. MATRIX GAMES makes a lot of good ones like Battles in Normandy, Steel Panthers World at War, Korsun Pocket, War in the Pacific, and Highway to the Reich.

I have played all the games listed above but the only board game other than Monopoly, Yatzee, and Risk has been ASL. Yeah I know what you all are thinking, thats a helluva game to tackle for your first, but I have been learning it since November and have a fairly decent grasp of it.

What I am looking for are 2 player games that I could get my wife to play. She isn't the WWII buff that I am and Wargames whether Strategic or Tactical level, are not of much interest to her.

She has never really played anything other than yatzee or the other typical american classic type games but she said she is open to new ideas and would welcome the change of pace from me playing on the computer and her watching TV.

With that being said, let me show you what I have been looking at.

Please feel free to add games that you think would suit us.

-edit- Forgive me if the pictures are terrible. For some reason my browser isn't showing them at the moment but I don't want to start this list again.

My wife, who is NOT a wargamer likes this game pretty well.
She doesn't request it but will happily play it.

When I met my wife she was only interested in playing Mahjongg (she's Filipino). Since she manages a hotel, I was able to get her to try Acquire, which she now loves. Last year I convinced her to try Poker, which she's now addicted to.

Considering how long we've been married, that's about one new game every four years. I will make my next approach in 2008.

I love balloon cup but my wife absolutely hates it. It's just an abstract numbers game to her. Also, the defensive screwing over factor probably doesn't help.

We just got the base game of this, no expansions. We haven't played yet, but have read instructions and are both eager to play it. We both liked MTG when it first came out and fell away from it because if the moneypit it became. This has a similar feel.

A good game for 2-5, and is being reprinted soon (fingers crossed). Add 2 camels of any color to your caravan on your turn, trying to create the largest group of one color, fence off a piece of board, connect to an oasis or gather watering holes. A medium weight game that most people enjoy.

I recently picked up this game and have played it twice with my wife (well, we in still in the middle of game 2). It's going very well.

My suggestion is: just make sure you are thoroughly familiar with the rules before you try to play it with her! Otherwise, it can easily seem more complex than it actually is, and put her off before she gives it a chance. So do a solo playthrough first. Also, if simple wargames don't go over well with her in general, this will never work. I started by weaning my wife on the likes of Risk 2210, Ogre, GEV. Once she "got them" enough to enjoy them, we moved on to games like Battle For Moscow, Memoir 44, Leningrad (roughly in that order) before tackling Europe Engulfed. The approach actually worked! I even did a geeklist on this very subject.

But Siege of Jerusalem and Advanced Third Reich are right out, no matter how much your wife loves you. Good luck

Browsing the BGG you probably already saw this one. A very good (I know, it's a matter of taste) 2 players game, and from my own experience a very pleasant hus./wife game. Not war-related, could be focused on building and trading. There are variants and expansions.

The opposite is true for my girlfriend and I. She likes lighter games and I am into heavier strategy games, but neither of us like the SC board game. We prefer the SC 2 player card game becuase there is more variety of what you can build, etc. we are also fond of the expansions, except for the magic/wizards one. it is hard to have an even start with the 2-player version of the board game.

This is my favorite of the games that I've picked up to play with my wife and she likes it quite a bit, too. It has a lot of the things I like about Puerto Rico in a two player game, it isn't overly complex, and it plays fairly fast. But it does have more depth than most card games, coming close to the feel of a board game.

I second! a very nice 2-4 player and plays as well with 2 players as it does with 4 players. veyr enjoyable with 2 players and a game can last 15-45 minutes, depending on how much thinking one wants to do. a quick run to first learn the buildings is helpful.

You will not go wrong with San Juan. My wife is a casual gamer and she loves this game. It plays great with 2, 3 or 4. Once you know the cards, it is quick to play. You can complete 3 or more games of San Juan in the time it takes to complete 1 game of Puerto Rico. Highly recommended!

It is light and fast enough to not make her zone out, and has enough wargame to make me feel all manly :-)This is now on my want list and may be a good game that you would both enjoy. I would recommend not dumping this one on her right away though or you could scare her away!

Hmmm, I find your comments on this game interesting.

I have a friend who I bet feels manly when he plays wargames. I'm not so into wargames, so that probably got him wondering. Then he asked if I knew who "Snake Eyes" was, and when I didn't, he was sure I must have grown up a girl.

His mistake was bringing up sports, which led me to challenge him to a manly game of racquetball.

Let's just say he doesn't challenge my manliness anymore.

And aarondesk, when you read this, laughlaugh

My manly comment was sort of an inside joke reference to my gaming group which contains a guy who refuses to play a game "that he can't kill something in". If he can't fight in it he doesn't like itninja.
As for me, I am happy playing everything from flowerpower to zombieszombie. I have been spotted playing disney princess spinning wishes with my daughters then putting them to bed and getting into 7 hour battletech battles.

It takes a lot for me to refuse to play a game. It's all for fun, and the enjoyment of a game really has a lot to do with the people you play them with. The folks I get to play with are a lot of fun and especially my wife, who is happy to oblige my desire to erase my irritating work day with even a quick filler game, is the best, so I always think of her first when considering a new game.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. I am actually stuck in a dry boring all day meeting as I type this so I better go.. they think I am taking notes..soblue

ps. I know who Snake Eyes is AND I play a mean game of racquetball. so there.

My wife, daughter and I played this game and found it relentlessly boring. Bits are nice though. May play better with revisied rules, but with all the great games out there, why bother?

Heh. I love this game and collect it. I played with my wife a bunch at first. Then, as I got more into it, and learned more about fleets, and my collection grew, she kind of became uninterested. She liked it when we had just a few ships and played it in its simple form. Once it came to strategizing sweet fleets, she didn't like it so much.

Still, it's a great game with cool pieces, cool characters, etc. So many people slam this game, but it has a huge following, so it can't be that bad. It's actually very fun.

This is more of a fun game than a strategy game. The bits are great!!! My group really enjoys this whenever we need a "lite" game. Though it really isn't for just 2 players.........at least 4 makes the game fun IMHO.caravancaravanredtrain5vpcornninja

This is a good light game. Personally, I think it works best with 2 or 3 players. More control over which cards you get.

This is probably my wife's favorite game also. She's perfectly content to let me "do the math." There is enough luck in this game to allow an acceptable level of wins and losses given prudent play.

Another vote for vastly overrated. It's a boring game where decisionmaking often vacillates between obvious and "take a wild guess."

LC bored my mother and my husband as well, although my 7.5 year old really likes it. And we're all Knizia fans (and filler fans), so it's not as if this is a kind of game we'd be likely to dislike.

At any rate, my advice is play it before you buy it. I didn't because it was so universally acclaimed here and it's the first BGG-inspired purchase that I've considered a dud (but for the fact that the kid enjoys it).

If your wife doesn't like it when you competitively cut her off at the knees, Kahuna is a recipe for eating your supper alone or in stony silence. She's got to be a good-humored gal or able to give as good as she gets to stay happy--Kahuna is a good little game, but not for fragile relationships.

My wife bought this game for me for Christmas thinking she would like it too. After several wipe-outs by me she got frustrated but kept on trying to play it. Eventually, I figured the best way to keep her interested was to let her win at least the first round. Then we modified the rules to give one point for both first and second rounds (this is a weakness of the game that if someone wins the first two rounds it is almost impossible to make up the 3 points). This made it more competitive and now she routinely beats me. This is a good game to get since it involves both strategy and some luck in drawing the right cards.

This game should be avoided unless you have other friends that will play this after your wife says it's boring.

If you were to come up with a list of game qualities that women seem to enjoy, I'm not sure Kahuna would have any of them.

This got me, my wife and many others on the geek into deeper strategic gaming. Very light but once learned we added a couple of expansions which made it a bit deeper. Before we knew it we were buying other German games. It went from there. Now I can't go a day without searching ebay for German games. Someone please help!

This is an excellent 2 player game with each player taking two colors. If you wife likes the tetris-type games, this should be a hit. I don't know why, but Blokus seems to be favored by women. A decent game that I do not mind playing....would enjoy it more if my wife didn't ask to play it quite so much.....

This is probably the only abstract strategy game my girlfriend will play. She likes games with themes better, so I was happy to find Blokus. It can get a bit overwhelming with two colors per person, though, but one can always try a smaller board version.

I think you might also want to look at Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation.

It is also designed by Knizia.

Blue Moon and LotR: The Confrontation are often cited as games that fit the very need you are trying to fulfill.

Show her Tikal, Entdecker, and Goldland. The spouses often like discovery/exploration games more than head-on confrontation games. These have very nice graphics, they unfold in an almost story-like way as the boards develop, and they truly convey the theme well.
