I figured I would do another list of games that go on EBay, or through dealers for an arm and a leg, and the question is why. The game may be real bad, or ok, but no way is it worth that much. Feel free to defend the game or frag it.

Might as well kick the list off with Dark Tower. It is a fun game, worth a rerelease, but my gosh, there is NO WAY it should go for that much. Funny thing is that I paid $5 for it at a garage sale, and then traded it for $40 credit with a dealer at a convention. I then found out it went for what it did on EBay. Go figure.

Originally released at $60 I think that this game suffers (or benefits) from fond memories more than anythinng else. At the time, it WAS Everquest/World of Warcraft/Halo. It was a solitaire game for 1-4 players. All of the fun is in the memories of it being played.

This is a boring piece of ap-cray that should never be reprinted.

WOW!...a blast from the past!!!

This was such a great game (and by great I mean FUN).
Yes, the gameplay was very linear and unimaginative but I very much enjoyed every session. This was the Gateway Game for most of my nongamer friends & family whose only experience was Monopoly & Risk. It also help many of them to be more accepting of "fantasy roleplay" (i.e.pencil & paper AD&D).

So it's not hip, new or Euro...so what!!!
It was a very memorable part of my teenage years.

Ok, so I am one of those people who paid way too much for this game on ebay. And I got it before ebay was well known and people started poking around their garages for things to sell.

But, this is a game that people buy more for nostalgia then for the game play. If you didn't have one as a kid or were too old/young when it came out, you probably wouldn't understand the nostalgia. Heck, I don't understand my nostalgia for this game. But, I get joy-joy feelings whenever it is pulled out and I hear that dragon sound

I bought a 1st edition at the Origins game auction for $1. (the box had been sat on). I think I got more gaming value for that buck than most any ever spent on a board game. We played it so much I swore off it for the rest of my life (also swore of Axis & Allies for the same reason).

Now folks pay stupid amounts of money, particularly for 2nd editions with multiple expansions.

A couple of years ago, when I was checking the completed prices for Talisman on eBay, I saw that one seller had sold 2nd ed. with all expansions for around $700 dollars.
Another seller seemed to have seen this and other such sales and put up his complete set. At a starting bid of $1000! Nobody bit. I think he did manage to sell it after relisting it at a lower starting price.

Even the individual expansions are commanding high prices.
A Talisman: Cities is about to go for $99, and the last and rarest 2nd expansion, Talisman: Dragons commands particularly high prices.

Then, of course, there are the various stories about finding games like these in garage sales or thrift shops.
Was it Greg Schloesser who told the story of spotting and grabbing a complete copy of Talisman sitting in someone's garbage while out walking with his wife?

A few years ago, at one of the Orion game conventions here in Toronto, Wally Hnatiw and Doug Richards went next door to a church sale. (Wally and Doug are local gaming-community celebs who have two of the largest collections in the Toronto area). Wally spotted and grabbed a 2nd ed Talisman (w. one expansion I think he said) that was being sold for $5. And then tried to talk them down on the price!
(Evil, Wally! Very Evil! devil )

Actually the cost of the power cards has been affected less by collectors and more by the rising popularity of Type I and 1.5

For those who aren't at all familiar with Magic, those are the two formats that allow most of the older cards to be used. A few years ago, both of those formats had almost died, and were very rarely the feature of tournmanets. More recently, large tourneys have been held that crown champions in both of these formats, and independent tourneys have also sprung up that offer power cards as prizes. The result is that the secondary market has grown considerably and cards like Moxes, which used to be available for around 100$ if you were willing to play plebian white bordered ones, are now worth 3 times that, with the black border ones shooting up even higher.

Changes to the banned and restricted list can also have a big impact on card values. Mishra's Workshop is a great example of this as it was worth no more than 20$ for most of its life, but when it became unrestricted an entire new archetype was formed which relied on having 4 copies of the card...a card that was already quite scarce because it was from a very early set. The result is that the card is now worth over 200$ per copy.

Similar things happen on a smaller scale with more recent cards as they tend to lower dramatically in value when they rotate out of Type II, which happens every two years.

I was thinking for Magic, to make the older cards popular, a "Block Party" format should be introduced. And I will need to explain what I mean, CAREFULLY, as people seem not to get what I mean.

In a "Block Party" format, players can play any deck of cards against any other deck of cards, provided each deck ONLY has cards from a certain block or cycle. I don't mean EVERY card in a tournament is from the same block/cycle, just that a single deck can't have cards from a single time period. When I have tried to explain that, people assumed I meant just one block/cycle for ALL the decks.

I got the idea from this from I believe a Scrye article that pitted different blocks against each other in a format called "Block Party".

Players' decks can also have cards from the regular edition, PROVIDED they were out when that block or cycle was around.

This type of tournament allows players with older decks to compete.

Actually a friend of mine who still plays Magic has made utterances to the effect that Block Party is a format that has been played locally with some regularity (here in Michigan).

The Block Party is actually an official format now, sanctioned by Wizards and apparently popular online. There is a specific banned card list just for this format on the Wizards site, mainly to keep stuff like the monstrous Urza block decks in check.

I actually have been somewhat tempted to play in that format, mainly because it is the only one in which Necropotence is not banned or restricted...still haven't though...

Wow, that is great to hear. I guess I am not the only one who read the "Block Party" article and got the idea. When I tried to explain it to people, they misunderstood what I was saying. Anyone have any URL links for more info on this?

This may actually get me to dust off some of my cards. I can see the popularity of this format. This format at least keeps people playing without having to reenter tournaments.

I believe this format must be the reason why Wizards decided to finish off the Ice Age block.

Any idea where Arabian, Antiquities, Dark and Fallen Empires would fit into? Would they be considered a block of their own or are they not played?

I guess for the hardcore group, this is a must have since it has a good blend of Tactical Battles and Strategic Recruitment. The counters do wear out and you can't find any replace unless you buy another.

My friends used to play this a lot in college and it's pretty amazing to find a copy set up at their apartment ready for drop in play.

I was lucky in that the copy I bought from Ebay turns out to have 2 copies of the game.

A friend picked this up at a car boot sale for some paltry sum. We had no idea it was valuable but we loved the game.

Somtime after finding out how valuable it was, the same friend shelled out an outrageous amount for a shrinkwrapped copy on EBay. He's never even opened the box it was delivered in, never mind the shrinkwrap. He's convinced it's going to accrue massively in value in years to come, and I suspect he could well be right.

The really mad thing I saw once was a Chaos Warrior Character Pack: It sold for about 70€!!! I got mine for just 15€ a few months before (and I wouldn´t pay more than 25€ for any Character-Pack).

My college roommate and I had the original of this game and loved it. In fact we waited for each expansion to become available. Much later when I had barely remembered it I came upon the AH version and bought it. I do not know if it was the missing rules/features or time but I was pretty bitterly disappointed!

Now will I fork over many hundreds of dollars to make up the difference...I don't think so...

Boy the smilies keep multiplying. Can someone clue me in on what game the colored dice are from (the PR, TTR and DDW references I got).

Yep, it is going to be reprinted this year... Don't know if it will be an exact duplicate of the 2nd edition, or a translated back to english version of the Amigo release, or some new variant on the theme...

And I'm curious if, before the impending reprint came into play, there was ever a significant difference in price for the 1st and 2nd edition(1st is rarer if I recall, so from a collectors standpoint may be more valuable... but the tweaks for 2nd edition were all positive from what I've seen, thus making it the more desirable of the two from the gamer perpective...)

I'm looking forward to the new CDG like Manifest Destiny and Empire of the Sun when GMT ships them next month. Will have to set aside some time to play them.

The good thing about CDG system is that you can pick up on the play fairly quickly after playing just one of them.

I have been contemplating Path of Glory, especially now that it has been reprinted.

Too many games...too little time.

I've seen at least 3 unpunched copies go for <$60. You just have to be patient. I, of course, overpaid. At least my copy is mint. Bought card protecters for it as I don't anticipate Multiman ever republishing this one.

This is a pretty good game, and I suspect the main reason you see it on e-bay so often is that the rules seem complicated. I suspect people keep buying it, trying to play, and selling it again. The rules really aren't that bad, I taught myself without too much trouble. Banzai is a pretty great expansion though.

Examining the marketplace, you will see that the one that is earmarked $850 is actually McMulti's predecessor, Crude, which is vastly more rare than McMulti itself. That copy that is listed is also only partially punched, and comes from Sid Sackson's personal collection. I'm not saying that those elements combined equal the asking price, but it is a unique item -- especially since I have seen people offering $300 for just a copy of Crude.

Star Wars Epic Duels. Once somebody gets their hands on it, they never sell it. I got lulled into this one when my roommate came back from coop with Hasbro (where he got paid to co-develop the card designs and playtest - lucky!). When he graduated from college and moved away, he took it with him (mind you, his is actually a prototype with alternate art, and I bet that would fetch a pretty penny). I spent months scanning ebay for it, and new sets would routinely go up into the $80 range for a simple game that's designed for ages 8+. I finally buckled down and picked up a copy on ebay last week with birthday money. My price for a used set - just under $60. And I'm happy about it, too.

This boggles the mind, as the games were readily available at close out prices at Toys R Us for quite a while. We have two sets in the house because I bought a close out priced copy for my eight year old son just to have as a toy. I find myself wishing I'd stocked up on copies when they were available so cheaply now!

When I said 80, I meant shipping and everything. Yeah, I've seen sets sell for 35, with another 15 in shipping. The one I bought for mid-50's included the 15 for s&h. In my book, that's still part of the price.

You know...there's so many alternate decks and maps on the Yahoo group, you could conceivably play this game entirely for free by simply downloading, printing, cut n pasting - the complete rules are available from hasbro.com. Many of the decks even include cardboard figures, and a bit of ingenuity can net you the rest in the form of singles Star Wars Miniatures pieces.

Well, I suppose you would have to build a custom D6. But that's not tough.

I sold a copy of Discretion some years back for $275 in an impromptu auction on rec.games.board.marketplace. I have to admit I was stunned. I had picked it up (still in shrinkwrap) at a Goodwill store for $5, and played it a couple of times.

The kicker is that there had been two copies in shrink at the Goodwill when I bought mine. I almost picked up both, but decided it would be stupid to blow 10 bucks for a game I'd never heard of. Right.

here is another OOP GW game that fetches i ridiculous price on ebay. it easily goes for around $100 (maybe more, or maybe a little less). last time i looked, there were around 10 copies available "buy it now" going for around $130, and every one of them are missing the terminators and/or genestealers miniatures.

what really rakes me about ebay and warhammer quest/space hulk is the thought that folks buy them up, gut the boxes and resell the leftovers, making these once great games all the much more a rarity.

i do not understand why GW is not attempting to print these games, i would say demand is way higher than the pure "fantasy" or "40k" lines.

If this is true then this must be a recent development. I paid less than 30 on Ebay for a played copy in January and the shrink ones were in the 60 dollar range. That's pretty reasonable. Wasn't hard to find a copy for sale either.

I used to have SPI's Atlantic Wall -- I see it going for $235 at some online stores.

I also had Eon's Cosmic Encounter (1st printing) -- I almost had a heart attack at the price it commands nowadays -- and frankly, I found it wasn't all that great a game - fun, but not THAT fun.

I re-acquired a copy of Talisman, 2nd ed. for MUCH less than everyone seems to want to pay - it's a fun game to spend a couple hours on (without expansions), but again, not THAT fun!

I do still have DungeonQuest, with the snotlings and first heroes add-on (the lead figures). Anyone have any idea what that thing might go for thesedays?

Ah, well -- gaming is good fun, right?!

There are too many great games currently being released for me to even consider paying the kind of prices people are asking for these games. For me it's not the game that provides the enjoyment but the friends that I play the game with.
