I am pretty amazed at the sheer variety of games that are coming out in 2011. These games appear in alphabetical order and all of them could be superb titles!

This is my first attempt at a Geeklist so please thumb if you enjoyed reading it.

Ever wanted to see a dragon versus a chicken in an arena setting? In ScrumBrawl, the first player to score 3 goals wins. You control an army of interesting combatants (druid, necromancer) that are all using their unique abilities to score goals. The art is fantastic and the quick game time make this one of my most anticipated 2011 releases.

I was just informed of this game and it seems to be fully funded with a 2011 release. The following description taken from BGG is hilarious and intriguing at the same time:

"Hiring Nerds (engineers) creates better products, which attract more users, who in turn generate money. Hiring Suits (Sales) generates more money, which can be used to hire more nerds."

I'm a little disappointed in myself that I left this off my list for so long. shake Boasting six new factions, all of which look to be interesting in one way or another, Summoner Wars: Master Set should hit stores in the US this summer.

The Summoner Wars Master Set contains six new and different complete factions from which to choose:

• Play as the Shadow Elves and conceal your plans in swirling darkness!
• Choose the Benders and confound your foe, turning his own troops against him!
• Command the Vargath, mountainous goatfolk who call lightning from the heavens!
• Select the nefarious Sand Goblins and delight in malicious trickery!
• Muster the Deep Dwarves and control the forces of Geomancy!
• Lead the ferocious Swamp Orcs to war and hack upon your foes as they are snared in your vines!

I came across this game several months back and it looked kind of cool but at the time the game seemed to be an expandable miniatures line with metal minis. And while I think it still is, the most recent rumblings have revealed a big box boardgame loaded with plastic figures (50+ minis). So far it seems to be a RPG lite type game but in a boardgame format. Definitely a dungeon crawler type game though. The thing that caught my eye was the figures. Very nicely sculpted figures with an Anime style to them. I'll be keeping an eye on this since from what I've seen of the rules it appears simpler than most games of this type. With the nice cartoonish figures I could see this being a very kid friendly dungeon crawl type game.

AEGs Legends of the Five Rings has intrigued me for a long time. It's a CCG and I've said I wouldn't get into any more of those so that's that. But now they are coming out with a boardgame version of the game. The game will come with pre-built decks for up to 4 players. But there is nothing to stop you from adding cards from the CCG to the game giving you more replayability. Sounds like a neat format and one that will likely generate more interest in the 2nd longest running CCG ever.

Russian board game.
English edition. Released in July 2011.

From BGG:
"In this game, players take on the roles of apprentice mages studying in a Magic School. Each player tries to gather the necessary components in order to produce magic elixirs, powders, talismans and even magical creatures. For each completed creation the player receives points - the harder the task, the more points a player receives.

The games consists of 76 cards. Each card acts either as one of 16 ingredients or a recipe for various magical creations. Simple recipes require simple ingredients, while more complex ones may require the use of previously created elixirs, powders, etc."

Russian board game.
English edition. Released in July 2011.

From BGG:
"This is a card game with an evolution theme.

Each player starts with 6 random cards from a deck consisting of 64 cards. During the Evolution Phase, every card may be played as an Animal (face down) or as a Skill (face up, attached to an animal). There are around 20 different skills, including Carnivorous, Camouflage, Sharp Vision, Swimming, Poisonous, Communication, etc. Many cards have 2 skills at the same time - one has to turn the card with the selected skill side up when placing on the table. Each player plays just one card in order until everyone passes.

During the Survival phase dice determine how much food is available, Players in order attempt try to feed their animals. Carnivorous animals can eat other animals!

After Survival Phase players receive as many cards as they have live animals plus 1 and the process repeats until the deck is exhausted.

Each live animal in the end scores 2 VP, skills - 1 VP. Some cards provides more VP (carnivorous and parasite). The player with the most VP at the end wins.

Evolution is playable with up to 8 players using two sets."

Check out Exile Sun, slated for a kickstarter run next month.

From BGG:

Game Play Description

Exile Sun combines some of the most compelling strategic mechanics in a way that delivers a streamlined, integrated and fast paced game of competition and conflict. Simplified deck building, hand management, simultaneous hidden worker placement, a card draft, 6 unique player advantages, and a revolutionary zero-luck combat resolution system ensure that playing Exile Sun is like no other game. Private and public card based objectives give players options for points, but they must choose carefully when allocating their limited resources. The player with the most points accumulated at the end of three game cycles wins.

A Game Round

The game simply consists of cycles where each player in turn makes four fleet moves and then ends their turn by moving a pawn on the 'Timer Track'. The 'Timer Track' triggers events like 'Supply' and 'Battle' that effect all players simultaneously. Once each event is resolved the player turns continue.

Moves - These moves can be regular movement, scanning an enemy fleet, launching a decoy fleet, and initiating a battle.
Events - The battle and supply events are resolved with a mechanic that may be best described as simultaneous hidden worker placement. This unique mechanic involves the use of a control card with 10 sliding tabs. The resulting game play is tense, intuitive and intensely competitive.

Theme Overview

Far off and forgotten, orbiting the Exile star, a fragmented group of Colonial powers are struggling to exist in the harsh environment of their foreign home. Having been unexpectedly cut off from contact with Earth over two hundred year ago, the process of gaining some economic recovery has been slow and arduous. With dissention rising among the populace, these leaders must compete to gain military, economic and technological advantages over each other in a race to lead the united colonies in a mission to contact Earth. Time is short. While an outright planetary assault could express dominance in military power, perhaps luring out and destroying an opposing Flagship or Construction Shipyard can have the same effect using fewer resources. Or hit and run assaults with fleets of strike craft can be equally effective. But be warned, leaders dare not neglect their own colony resources, or their supporters will lose faith in them and they’ll fall quickly out of the race.
