I am mostly looking to create a list of tactical games of Alexander the Great's battles and campaigns, but other non-tactical wargames on the subject are welcome, as are other types of games that focus on him.

A short description of of how Alexander is portrayed in the game and of gameplay would be welcome.

Please feel free to add to this list*, but please do not list games where Alexander is only a minor character or that deal only with his "empire" after his death. Non-wargames are okay to list if they described as such and focus on Alexander the Great or his campaigns.

Thanks.

*The list is sorted alphabetically for easy reference.

Here's a free Print and Play one, but you have to go to the King’s College site to find the rules and charts although the counters are posted as an image a BGG. I guess you have to make your own map.

This Dave Chapel tactical simulation of Alexander's siege of Tyre (332 BC) uses both sea (hex) and land (point) movement to simulate ship battles, the siege, and city fighting.

My copy came in a zip bag with a paper map, but despite that, the components are quite nice. The counters represent ships, rams, marines, siege weapons, troops/militia and markers.

There is a good review of this game, here:

This Avalon Hill tactical game by Gary Gygax focuses on the 331 BC battle of Gaugamela (Arbela) where Alexander's outnumbered army defeated the army of Darius III of Persia. The units represented by counters include phalanxes, cavalry, elephants, chariots, various infantry and leaders.

I played this a lot as a kid and into my 20s. I found it can be quite engrossing despite the minimal graphics and flat battleground of the map. Victory (or defeat) can come rather quickly.

First there was Good Industries' Ancients. Then 3W rereleased it as Ancients I and its expansion Ancients II which added more land scenarios and introduced naval scenarios. Then 3W combined both its games into a single box, the one which I own and am writing this geeklist item from, and the one which I used for the picture. Recently it has been revised by Victory Point Games Ancient Battles Deluxe which itself has numerous expansions.

From Good Industries' Ancients and 3W's Ancients I:

Scenario 6: Chaeronea (338BC) - Philip vs Theagenes of Thebes
Scenario 7: Granicus (334BC) - Alexander vs Memnon of Persia
Scenario 8: Issus (333BC) - Alexander vs Darius of Persia

From 3W's Ancients II and Ancients:

Scenario 4: Arbella/Gaugamela (331BC) - Alexander vs Darius of Persia
Scenario 5: Hydaspes (326BC) - Alexander vs Porus of India
Scenario 6: Raphia (217BC) - Antiocus III vs Ptolemy IV

A fun little game.

This came out in 1977 and Decision Games is planning a reprint to it again. I never had a copy so I can't say how it played. It featured both a Roman and Macedonian game. The Roman one had
Quote:
two specific periods are covered: the Second Macedonian War (against Philip V), in which Rome laid its claim for control of Greece (albeit in somewhat defensive posture), and the Syrian War (against Antiochus, the Selecuid king)
The Macedonian side was Alexander's campaigns. It was one of Richard Berg's earlier Macedonian simulations.

Another Berg game on Alexander. Always wanted to try it, but not sure enough about it to buy it. More a focus on the overall campaigns and not individual battles. Tough on the non-Alexander player as the best he can hope for is to whittle down Alexander's army. Supposed to be the start of a series of games, but not heard if a second was in the works.

This Dan Verssen solitaire wargame about Alexander's conquests is not tactical, but instead uses area movement and allows the player much variation about where/who to attack. The solitaire rules chit-pull system works well for a light wargame.

It comes with four campaign maps, and the counters represent various armies, markers (both for the map and to keep track), and leaders.

This is the first version of this tactical GBOH: Great Battles of Alexander game (a deluxe version followed). Using GMT's Great Battles of History rules, this Mark Herman game simulated the battles of Chaeronea (338 BC), Granicus (334 BC), Issus (333 BC), and Gaugamela (331 BC).

The units represented by counters include phalanxes, cavalry, elephants, chariots, various infantry and leaders.

Lost Battles simulates tactical ancient battles using square areas rather than hexes.

Some of the scenarios included are several of Alexander's battles.

I don't have this game, but would like it. It seems that it must be ordered from the company in England.
