The popularly-voted German Games Prize. How has the voice of the people stood up over the years? Is the game they thought the best back then still the best of its competition now? Is it still even played?

(Please restrict comments to these questions. General comments about what the game is about and such should be added within the game's entry itself.)

If you want to vote for the current year's award, go to
http://www.deutscher-spielepreis.de/

You can get a list of possible winners by finding the Geeklists showing the current year's Nuremberg releases and the past year's Essen releases.

For the list of jury-selected Spiel des Jahres winners, see http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listid=62...

This is a good game - but IMHO not deserving of such an award. It's fun and light, and I would even recommend it, but the best of the year... well maybe it was an off year.

Surpising rated somewhat low on the Geek, but I still think this is a very good game. We still play it once in a while and it's still fun. It can also be frustrating when things aren't quite going your way, but that's with a lot of games. If you like mazes, this is a must.

Was a great game for our family at one time, but doesn't get played too much now. It seems to drag a little. So is it great? Yes, I'd say it also deserved game of the year. When we do introduce new people to this game, they love it! I think we just played it so many time it got a little old.

Almost every house I visit has a copy of Monopoly, Sorry, or the Game of Life, etc. Those games are generally very poor, and I think exposure to those games tends to turn people away from trying other better games. If any game of the last decade has a chance to become a common household fixture in closets throughout North America, like the aforementioned examples, this is it. That would definately be an improvement.

For a guy who has done *so* many great games, to definitively label one as the best seems a little unwise. Tigris & Euphrates is a great game that deserved the top place in the DSP, but I can't quite bring myself to call it Knizia's best - that honor would go to Modern Art or Lord of the Rings, maybe Ra ... depending on what day you asked me. I suppose if you backed me into a corner, I'd go with Modern Art. But the man has done an awful lot of really good stuff.

I totally agree with Chris. Knizia has designed so many great games that it's fairly impossible to choose one game ultimately above the others. Besides, a game that works for one group doesn't necessarily work for another. People also seem to change their minds alot when they're playing and not playing... I also like the idea that a designer can have a pile of fantastic games instead of a one single diamond in a ocean of crap

Taj Mahal actually has a much stronger draw for me these days than Tigris & Euphrates. When I did my Reiner list, I rated T&E ahead of Taj Mahal (slightly), but I've been playing Taj again more recently and I might have been wrong. I think this game has a strategic depth that is missing from T&E, and so is a bit more interesting to me. It's also a bit simpler, I think.

I like this game, but don't believe it is game of the year quality. It just seems a little haphazard. Sometimes after I win, I sit back and really can't tell you why. One of the better quick, light games however. Also beautiful, that can't hurt.

The reason I agree that this SHOULD be game of the year is that I've converted more non-gamers to gaming with this game than any other. Fairly easy to teach (farmers can be confusing), this works more strategically with 2 and as a fun, more random and fairly quick game for 5-6. This one hits the table at almost every Game Night and is the game I can point to as being most cost-effective in terms of price to number of plays ratio.

This game is second only to Settlers in respect to converting people over to German style games. With all the expansions there is little reason to grow bored with this game. I play it numerous times each week on BSW yet still get excited about playing it. It deserves game of the year and then some.

This is a fun game which I enjoy somewhat; however, what a lot of people may not realize is that it appeals particularly to those who have autism, IMHO. I think it has something to do with placing chaos into order or some other aspect of the game which they generally find soothing. Anyway, it fills its niche nicely, but is not one of my favorites. I am glad I own it and we play it often.

I own this game but have only played it once with my family (4people and only the basic version).
The thing is it was quite fun, but it just felt really random to me (and that's saying a lot for me because I really enjoy Zombies!!! or Starquest for example which are dicefests).
I often felt I didn't have that much control over the game but it's still enjoyable.

This was an easy choice - will someday be considered a classic. Also, one of the best prices out there for everything you get.

MY question is: did Age of Steam qualify for the 2003 prize. If not, why not? If so, why isn't in the top 10? I thought it was quite popular in Germany. It can't be the length...I see Mare Nostrum up there! I'm confused.

Justin,

I believe it was eligible (I voted for it, but only in 5th spot).

Age of Steam didn't/doesn't do well in Germany, the most popular opinion seems to be "interesting, but...". It didn't receive that much press either.
Here's a few polls:
http://www.fairplay-online.de/noten/scout/e2002-n.html
(just after Essen)
http://www.reich-der-spiele.de/Spielecharts.php
(current gamer's hit list)
http://gamesweplay.de/tipp2003a.html
(impressive!! DSP prediction contest)

Note the absence of Age of Steam.

In my gaming group AoS didn't do well either, criticism ranged from "too long, tedious" (everyone said this!), "ugly", "too unforgiving", "wrong mix of mechanisms" (production in particular).

AoS appears to be a game that appeals only to a small, specialiced group of people. This is enough to give it a high average rating (here at the Geek), but apparently not in the DSP, which seems to reward a "broader" appeal more.

It was nice to see another designer beside Klaus, Kramer, or Knizia win it with Puerto Rico. But there is no denying that those three are truly master designers. In the infamous words of Garth and Wayne, "We're not worthy!"

The who will win in 2004 question is fun:

San Juan (PR card game) could do well, as could King Arthur and Carcassonne the Castle.

But at this moment, Teuber's Anno 1503 has to be a favorite of some sort...

I agree with Sven about the 2004 favourite... after many years, a "big" game from Teuber, based on a popular (in Germany) PC game and with a theme that appeals to many.
