Traded for this about a month ago. Was up 2 hours before the wife, so decided to throw this on the table and give it a go for the first time. A little rules referencing, but surprisingly simple mechanics. I did not make use of the solitaire cards/rules, instead just played both sides of the first scenario "Pegasus Bridge"...which seemed hugely lopsided in favor of the Germans.

Solid game, worth more solitaire play time, but looks like it would be a fun one with 2 players.

Two games of the co-op game, Red November. Lost both games, but the second time, we were SO close!

Been busy working on my Merchant of Venus solo variant, and reading the rules to my new solitaire game, Space Infantry.

Ahh...I get to add to this list again finally!

As it was the Geekway to the West weekend, the missus and I played quite a few games (for us)

We played a few old favourites and quite a few new ones:

We started out Friday with:

Battle Cry
Stronghold (we bought a copy after spending 4 hours on it Friday trying to learn the rules, wife fell in love with it)
Tumblin-Dice
Tichu (spent nearly all Friday night playing this!)
7 Wonders (excellent game, won a copy as well! )
DungeonQuest (third edition) (man whadda brutal game!)
Ticket to Ride
Fresco
Pow Wow
Cargo Noir
Cyclades (on our "Must Buy" list!)
The Mines of Zavandor
Memoir '44: Tigers in the Snow (overlord, played as the German CiC. We beat up those silly Ruskies pretty good.)
Crokinole (played for a bit ourselves to familiarize, and then promptly lost our first tourney round! Wife played more brutally than finesse)
Seven Card Samurai

I am sure there are a few I forgot about, some of these games we played multiple times back to back. Many of them we did not know the rules so were learning as we went (or with some had someone that played at least once to show us).

This was the week of Caylus! It's taken 18 months to come back to the game after a first play, and I'm far better equipped for it now, being able to perceive some of the tactical and strategic elements involved. I won both the two games I played, the first due to a mistake by an opponent in the final round (though I think would still have placed highly), the second due to aggressive early play that locked the game down in my favour. I employed a different approach that the owner of the game hadn't seen, and was gratified when it paid off.

While the depth of Caylus is immense, my middle-weight preference inclines me to Caylus Magna Carta for reasons of length, teachability, and perhaps variety (with the card draw forcing players to build differently each game); I also like the variety in the leech effects. Caylus Magna Carta is a masterpiece of streamlining, shedding the fourth resource type, favours, the Bailiff, and repurposing Gold. I played a single 2p game online and locked my opponent down by applying a cash advantage against him. Through repeated poor decisions (playing on the last few squares despite not being able to pass last), he got barely two actions for three quarters of the game, and I won easily.

Hansa Teutonica is another deep game, with a high degree of interactivity and an open smorgasboard of options that generates groupthink, breakthrough strategies, personal styles, and radically different game experiences. Others players' actions (in aggregate) feel more significant than your own; while this opens the door to kingmaking, collusion and ganging up, I think it also allows different playstyles. I played a game with 4 others (3 of them newbies), and while there was a little bit of fighting over the action city, I pieced together a tiny network and won with only 3 actions. The game-end trigger was bonus marker depletion.

For the first (and probably only) time ever, I played Shadow Hunters, the base game only. 7p is my favourite number, and we had a good time; as the Unknown I managed the unusual feat of killing Daniel and making him win...

Two 7p games of Sticheln were next. This game really has it all: simplicity, teachability, a short play time, interesting decisions, and as these games demonstrated, a bit of depth. I think luck and the chaos of other players' actions is non-trivial, but there are actually a variety of tactics you can apply.

The old favourite Hare & Tortoise (first SdJ winner ever!) hit the table 6p. Despite idiotically wasting being the first player by not going to the first Lettuce square, I plodded 4-7 squares forward a turn and won; the other players did much more shooting forwards and dropping back.

Once again I played a couple of solid hours of Haggis, as well as a couple of solid hours of Fairy Tale (the simple game). Under repeat play, the latter impressed me with its minor but significant combo elements (easy enough for a non-gamer to absorb, provided she's comfortable with arithmetic) as well as its sense of development.

I played an online 2p game of Animalia, a decent, simple game. I think I would have preferred more casual play with lots of players than the head-to-head competition of 2p.

I also played a few games of 7 Wonders and Black Friday online. I find it difficult to understand the latter game's incredibly low ranking (in the 1400s!), once you get past the rulebook, it's a fantastic stockmarket speculation game.

On Friday I played Dominant Species. I must say that the game didn't grabbed me. There is little to no control. It was my first game of DS and probably I wasn't so sure of what I was doing, but...

Well, I plan to play it again soon, but I'm more skeptical now.

On Sunday I've played 4 (or more) games of Crokinole. He had a friends lunch (and dinner) and the game was played all afternoon.

On Saturday we played Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) which kinda took us all day...
But it was a great game! Only my second game of TI3, but the first game was with 7 players and dragged on and on, so this was much better!

And on Sunday I played a few games of Jenga.
I lost them all, because I kept trying to see how far the tower would tilt before falling.

I got in a rare game of Civ on Saturday with my game group - six players, and I managed to finish 3rd as Crete. We used the variant with limited game turns, so it was over in about 7 hours, which felt just about right for the amount of time I'd want to devote to the game. It is a classic, though, and it was great to get a chance to play it again.

Otherwise, the only news was that we cracked Egizia again, and realized we'd been playing it massively wrong - by far the worst case of misunderstanding the rules I've ever had, and with no real reason for it, either. We both agreed that playing correctly makes for a much more interesting game (duh!). Also, even though it didn't hit the table, I'd like to give a shout-out to Biblios, which we got last week and which is the best filler I've played lately (maybe ever).

Friday :

Got together with (newly converted gaming)friends for a long night of chatting, drinks and gaming.

First up was Family Business. I pumped up the game play with appropriate mobster lingo and bravado. It did me no good as we got taken out one by one starting with me. My wife who played Ma Barker and her gang won out.

Next up was Mission : Red Planet. It was a first play for all of us. It was so easy to teach and played very quickly. My friends gave questioning looks at the board until the first scoring. Once that happened I enjoyed seeing them all go "oooohhh". It moved along smoothly and they all got into it. Great game and one we will be playing again soon.

Finally, we played Thurn and Taxis. My wife and I had never played before but it was very easy to pick up. I ran neck and neck with the leader for the carriage win but everyone caught up fast. At that point my buddy's girlfriend ended it with a house win. I borrowed the game and will get some 2 player in to feel it out more.

Saturday :

I did some solo Onirim during break at work. On the next break my co-worker joined me for the co-op and we just missed winning the towers expansion by one door. Great game and I am eagerly awaiting the next one by designer Shadi Torbey - Equilibrion.

I didn't get very many games in again this weekend and likely won't for another few weeks as this is my busiest time of year.

I did, however, have a rather memorable gaming event take place. My oldest daughter, Melissa, brought home her boyfriend, Sebastian, for the weekend for me and my wife to meet. Although he is not an avid gamer he was rather awestruck with all my games. He, Melissa and I played Finca and Ricochet Robots. He loved both. LAter Lindy joined us as well for a somewhat difficulat layout of Robo Rally. Although he technically died 3 times (because he had not fully understood certain rules) he again loved this game. He has also named several other of my games that he wants to try. Apart from thinking he seems to be a very decent guy for my daughter I am quite hopeful of a new gaming partner in the making! whistle

Friday night with the guys, we started off with a 4 player game of Navegador. I played this game a few weeks earlier at a meetup and liked it so much, I had to get it. I was the only one of the four that had played it, but the game is quite easy to grasp, and the others didn't have too much problem getting into it (as the scores will show). Only one guy had a bad game, only because he didn't get any colonies or processing buildings to get money, so he was short on cash all game. I won with 105 points, with second having 104 and third having 101. The last guy had 67, but is now more aware of what he needs to do next time. They all enjoyed it, particularly since they have been getting into Euros lately like Caylus, Dungeon Lords, and Puerto Rico.

That doesn't mean we have given up our Ameritrash roots. Once the 5th guy showed up, it was time for Battlestar Galactica. The game started off with us making slow progress, but with nothing too bad happening, we thought perhaps there were none of the cylons were dealt in yet. Once we hit a distance of 2 however, the cylon would start to strike. We didn't know who it was though, but every time our morale was under attack, the cylon would strike again. As it turns out, two cylons were with us since the beginning, and one of their reveals was to lose even more morale. Once on the resurrection ship, they would use their powers to try to get boarding parties to kill us, and of course, a base star destroys our armory. Luckily the president had the cards necessary to get rid of them. But it wasn't enough. We just couldn't hold onto our skill cards, and we just kept failing the checks. We got to a distance of 4 before our morale plummeted and our new robot overlords took over.

Then I introduced them to RoboRally. We played a single board with three flags which I did horribly at. But it was a blast as always! This was another game I had to get after playing at a meetup a couple of months ago.

Saturday night went to a BBQ and bonfire, and when it started to rain we went inside for a game of Fits and Carcassonne. I won the former and lost the latter.

Sunday I went to my parent's house and we played a game of Saboteur. There were 5 of us, and my mom was a saboteur all three rounds and won. Then I introduced them all to RoboRally. I did a single board with only 2 flags this time since we had to eat soon. It was a hit, and my brother almost had the win but had miscalculated a gear rotation, and ended up dying by laser beam. My mom coasted to the second flag shortly after and ended the day winning both games.

My wife and I had a good weekend of gaming. We played our first game of Finca! We also played some Rumis+ which we haven't played in quite a while. We played the 'wall' three times and the pyramid once. Neither of us played the pyramid before and I remarked that as we started out the max. height for that board was the same regardless of the number of players and I thought that it wouldn't be a very good board. I still think it is the weakest board I have played so far with 2, but it wasn't a bad experience. I actually enjoyed it

Finca was the better gaming experience. My wife and I have really taken to rondel mechanic games. We both like Vikings, Seeland and now Finca. We agree that Seeland is our favorite of the three, but Finca is an excellent game for 2p as well.

All told we played:

Finca x5
Rumis+ x4

The most obscure game I played this weekend was Zombie Mosh! on Saturday. Played with my cousin and my friend. After beating the hell out of each other my cousin won as my friend and I lost 3 limbs each (which means we lost). The best part about this game is the first two points of damage coming against you are from an unknown source, just like a real mosh pit.

Also on Saturday played a quick round of Lord of the Fries with 5 people. I came in second with 17 points. You're supposed to play four rounds but by then 2 of the people were too drunk. This was the last game of the night.

Played a 4-person game of Small World with the three expansions on Sunday. I won with 91 points, and that's even with taking the Cursed Pixies (they had 6 coins on them when I picked them). I thought I was going to lose thanks to some bad race/power combos that were available when I picked my races, but pickign the ones that were skipped along with keeping down low helped me secure the victory! It was a close game though, with everyone else getting in the 80s in terms of coins.

After that it was a 4-person game of Betrayal at House on the Hill. We had 8 omens out before the haunt triggered. It ended up being haunt 10 (for those who know that one). I was the traitor, but lost. It was very close however.

We finally got this one to the table. Great game that I am obsessing about now. I can't wait to try it again now that I have a better understanding of the rules. I thought I had this one won but unfortunately, out of no where, an Autonatic victory was taken in one turn by a player going from 14 VP's to 23. I blame it on the other two player who were more focused on me then on the guy who took Europe and Eygpt to secure his win. It was a heartbreaking lose because no one saw it coming.

Infinite City
I like this one. It's and easy, fun little game with enough intersting twists to keep it interesting. I lost by one point in a five player game.

London
Played this one twice and won twice by fairly large margins. Not your typical Martin Wallace game.

Pandemic: On the Brink
We finally managed to win after many months of loses. I think our roles in this one really were the reason we secured the victory as they were all very compatible. We only had two outbreaks.

Had a nice game night on Friday. We played:

Kingsburg: Fun with four players, I was happy to learn that adding players really doesn't make the game take that much longer.

Ca$h 'n Gun$: Oh yeah, this one is still fun.

Snorta!: Still pretty underwhelmed with this party game. Just not as fun as it should be. It needs more swap cards to keep in interesting.

Anomia: This is officially my pick for the most underrated game on the geek. This small party game is really really fun. It has been a hit every time I've brought it out. If you have ever liked a party game, get it.

got in a 5 player and 4 player game of Zoolortto. I was able to win exactly zero of the games.

I am also in the middle of a learning game of Lords of Vegas which I can't wait to get in a full 4 player game.

A busy weekend for gaming. Saturday we started off with Trollhalla, which was way too light for my tastes. I doubt I'll play it again anytime soon. Next was another game of Troyes, in which we used the Troyes: Bonus Cards. I really am liking this game. Then it was on to Navegador, which may be my favorite rondel game these days. We wrapped up with Bourre, which was very meh. I'm not a gambler, so it wasn't my time of game?

Sunday I started off with the Sicily scenario of Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War. Although I won, my opponent and I both agreed that this was not a great scenario. Next, the two of us went and met 2 other friends where we played Oltre Mare. It wasn't a bad game, and there are many games I like better. One of those games was the one with which we wrapped up the day, Merkator. We played it twice, and each play knocked it higher up my wish list. I think this is another brilliant Uwe Rosenberg design.

All in all, a great gaming weekend.

Two friends and I decided to dust off some classics this session, although some modern games hit the table.

We started with Kingmaker, which went slowly, as it was the first time for two of us.

We moved to Lucky Loop, which is just a Yahtzee type game with some nice bits.

We then moved to Monster Maker, which is a Japanese card based dungeon crawl but works much like the Mille Borne mechanic

And finally, we finished with Dark Tower.

A very satisfying night
