Having only recently stumbled across RoboRally, I wondered what other games might be out there with a 'programming' mechanic - one where you program the next 'n' turns, and then each player plays their turns out according to the programming. Much of the fun, or course, is in seeing whether the other players did what you thought they would do when you built your 'program', and, perhaps more so, laughing at the people who got it spectacularly wrong.

So I went to do a search on the mechanic, only to find that it isn't a mechanic. Simultaneous play is, but not this 'programming'. So I made a suggestion to include this, and have found out that there seems to be a threshold of games that need the mechanic, before it will be added.

So the purpose of the geeklist is to add list games with this mechanic. This will, hopefully, discover enough games that use this mechanic to get it included, and also give us a pile of unfamiliar games to go and investigate. RoboRally is the obvious one to start with. The only other programming game that I can think of in my collection is Sopwith.

Note that for this definition, the important thing is for there to be programming of actions, preferably several, with a mechanism of executing those actions that means that things could go spectacularly or amusingly wrong, because the status of the game changed in ways you did not anticipate, or hoped would not happen, before you got to execute the action. In many cases, movement in these games is near enough simultaneous, but this is not required for the game to have a programming mechanic. There already is a 'simultaneous move' mechanic, and games that use that mechanic may, or may not, also use a programming mechanic.

Note that action point allowance/worker placement mechanics do not necessarily imply programming. Placing several action point/workers, and then doing the actions in turn is not programming.

In one of the least logically thematic instances of programming ever, you program out your turns in advance in Magic Realm by writing down the actions you are going to take.

Everyone in Magic Realm must suffer from deranged OCD. "I am going to spend exactly four days searching for a sword. I will keep searching even if I find it on day 2. I will then go fight the monster that I absolutely need the sword to fight regardless of whether I've found said sword or not, even though I know I'll die if I don't have it. Because that's my plan!"

EDIT: Oops. Guess it should be in 3 hour increments, not days. blush

This one is really nasty... not only do you have to pre-plan your turn's movement, but you have to obey a simplified set of laws of physics - so your movement this turn is pretty much pre-defined by your velocity (speed & direction) defined by last turn's movement... Each ship & missile has three counters - where you are, where you used to be, and where you'll end up. You can modify where you'll end up somewhat by rotating your ship & thrusting with the engines.

Oh, and you have to do this in 3 dimensions...gulp

It was fun with a ship a side, but any more than that became a nightmare...

A slightly different kind of programming game. The programme is open, but the players modify it each turn in order to gain an advantage - usually by causing damage to the opponent.

Another game like Robo Rally. Where you program your moves before hand. Laying stones and planks to try and cross the water to the other side, without falling in.

I just recently picked this up and have only played it once so far, but it was a lot of laughs and fun to play.

I love when someone has programmed a card to jump your pawn, only to fall in the water, because you moved away first. laugh

In RoboRally, you program a robot with a set of 5 simple moves (move forward, rotate, etc). You are in a race trying to navigate around an obstacle course with other robots. Obstacles include things like conveyor belts, crushers, flame-throwers, pushers, teleporters, oil slicks, pits, etc. And, of course, your robot, and the other robots can fire lasers.

I have only vague memories of this one - it wasn't brilliant, and I haven't played for a couple of decades.

Each tank is represented by a stack of instructions; move, fire, etc. Turns consist of executing the top instruction and putting it to the bottom of the stack.

Each turn, everybody selects their move, then everything moves simultaneously. After which, the gunfire happens.

It's not heavy programming, because you pick just one maneuver. Similar to Blue Max in that sense, but here movement is dice-based.

Sopwith is a simple dogfight game, played on a hex-based area. You program 3 moves at a time, which not only includes the direction of the move, but whether you are going to fire your guns, and in which direction. Your plane can get damaged by fire from other planes, and from flying through clouds.

Sopwith proved to be quite popular in the UK postal games hobby for a few years after it was released. The mechanic fitted very well with a postal regime where even in games that did not have the mechanic, it was common for there to be several turns between issues of the 'zine, so your orders were semi-blind and/or filled with if statements. Quite a number of 'zines ran games of it, and there was a central 'ranking' system that allowed some players to become aces. I ran that for a while. The fact that I was top of the rankings, and one of the very first aces, was a complete coincidence, of course.
