Recently heard Redmond Simonsen died March 6th. As perhaps the original great graphic artist in a field blessed with some pretty impressive talents, I thought I'd start a list of "Simonsen Greats" to say "thank you."

It is obvious I will overlook some greats - please add your selections.

While I love the maps for Patton's 3rd Army and Operation Grenade, the map and counters for Sicily really shine. The A-B-C strength chits for limited intel and the integrated shifts into the CRT for the Victory in the West series were a breakthrough.

Cedar Mountain, one of the GBACW games, uses a beautiful map with counters that Simonsen first designed for Terrible Swift Sword. CM is the zenith of the graphics he pioneered in the parent game. (TSS first edition was nearly my number one choice. Consider it a co-choice here.)

But at the top - Panzer Blitz, the game that started it all, in a way. The map tackled the tactical issues head on with hilltops and trees, rivers and gullies, giving us the first 3D wargame. The bold side views of the tanks and the very graphic scenario cards are still jump out at players. Note the graphic debt games all the games owe this early masterpiece. Thanks, Redmond.

The solar system map was the main teaser which convinced me to buy this game. With its plain acid green planets' orbits printed over the black void background, still make me feel the immensity of the space and the silent run of the planets.

Even his early work was good.

Here's the cover from S&T #20 (Jan-Feb 1970), the first issue I received. The two games included, Bastogne & Anzio Beachhead, were stunning to behold when compared to what Avalon Hill was offering at the time.

Jim Dunnigan may have been the brains, but I'm not sure S&T could have survived if it hadn't had Simonsen creating the graphics.

RAS didn't design this classic introductory game but he did take on ALL comers in MOVES magazine. Titled "8000:1" he played against the composite moves of all the subscribers. He did win (proving that wars cannot be run by committee). Never met him but he seemed to be the class-act of the old SPI power elite.

Greg Costikyan on RAS's role as a dungeoncrawl innovator:
Quote:
For instance, I designed a little solitaire dungeon-crawling game [Death Maze] in which one drew a map of the dungeon on graph paper. Redmond suggested instead that we print little room and corridor illustrations on cardboard counters, then draw the counters out of a cup to generate the dungeon. The suggestion was simple, graphically appealing – and brilliant. It, more than my contribution, made the game successful.
