This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty, but as always, add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our King Belial I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings Great_Mazinga, minionhunter, Krazygit, EvilTimmy and Blackwind.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
Heading out of Stevens Point today, we were going to stop at the Goodwill. First, my husband overshoots the driveway and pulls in next door. Tells me if I want to, I can just walk across the grass. I mention that the store doesn't open for 10 more minutes and he decides we will just leave and head on our way. WHAT?!?!?!
So down the road we go as I sit and grumble away. We take the exit to stop and get some produce to take with us. Alas, they are closed till 10:00 AM and it is just 9:00. I turn and look at my husband and say "well?" Now it's his turn to grumble. "I guess we could go back to the Goodwill and wait." Hah!
I passed on three copies of Yahtzee Jr. - I already have enough dice for Chunky Fighters and RoboDerby: Express - besides they wanted $2.99 each. The shelves are quite neatly organized, just not much there. Then I noticed this for $2.99. First, my son-in-law is a huge Spiderman fan - so I figure I'll nab this for him. I take a peek inside and see the minis:
Cool!! Now I'm hoping the game ISN'T complete - or that he already has it - because those are kind of cool, even if you aren't a Spiderman fan.
I normally don't buy trivia games because my husband wins them all, but I liked the questions in this game.
Even if the back of the box gives you depressing info like
"From 1982 to 199, CEO pay went up over 1,000%. ...What was the average increase in hourly pay for the working class?" Answer: 1%.
$2.30 from SVdP.
I also saw the game Mythology there. It had all the figures, and at the bottom of the box all the rest of the pieces were heaped in a giant pile. I was going to get it until I saw the price of $12.00. What?!?! It's only an average game at best. The pieces are likely better than the actual game play itself.
I've been on the fence for this one for a couple of weeks. On one hand, it has 5 dice, but from 3 different colors, but I already have 65 from Yahtzee Jr. (indented) and Safari Yum (non-indented) plus a BUNCH from Boggle Jr. (large indented).
Do I need more? I guess I do.
However, when I opened the game, I realized that there are a lot of good components in the box. It includes a lot of round token that can be reused for some PnP games. We'll see.
3$ at a local Church thrift store.
I left behind a copy of Star Wars: Episode 1 – Clash of the Lightsabers, as I already own one in shrink (I should play it...). If anyone local wants it, let me know (the one at the store), they will be charging 3$ for it, but it's opened.
Went to some garage sales this morning...pretty slim pickings. I picked up a copy of Kings in the Corner for the tray. The components are still in shrink, and I have fond memories of playing this game (sans tray) as a kid.
At the same sale I picked up a card shuffler--also new in box--for $1.00.
