As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you, now remain in my love. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. -- Jesus Christ
This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad™ and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our king: Belial I.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
In a Garza David a baby! Don't you just love spell check?
War Monger! She called me this because I play war games! Snicker.
Then while I was looking over the rest of the crap I spotted this, had to take a double take then a triple take. No price on it so I asked how much from the guy adding more crappy books to the pile. He took it from my hands and before I could stop him he whipped out his grease pencil and wrote $1.50 on the box. He saw the look of horror on my face and said it will rub off (my look of horror or the grease pencil?). anyway, the box was is very worn and when I got it home I found it was missing two cards and someone had taped the board sections together, but I couldn't let this one wither on the thrift store shelves.
I picked this Enchanted Forest up because it has cover art I've never seen before. I also couldn't find an example of it in the database. I'll post a picture after I swear at my phone enough for it to work. (Swearing has already started and I got nothing. Just gotta keep telling myself October 7th, October 7th....)
Sackson! Found this non-special edition Discovery Toys version at the Sheridan Salvation Army today for $2.50.
Unplayed, with gems and cards still wrapped. Unfortunately, it is lacking the rules and the color die, but the internet has already yielded the first of these and the die is easy enough to make.
There was also an aMAZEing Labyrinth at the same location, but a quick inventory showed too many pawns/tokens to be missing. I saw a few Blokuses at the Sheridan Unique and the Clark Village Discount Outlet, but passed as I have a nice copy already.
This copy is near mint, unplayed. The cards and mechanism (which is a very clever four-way take on the old pin-card sorting systems) have been fiddled with a bit, but the manuals and special cards are unused.
This is definitely a rare gem, and one of my favorite thrift finds of all time. $3.95 @ SA.
A student left this little gem behind after graduating last spring. I'd seen it on the shelf earlier in 2011, but was still a gaming neophyte back then and no idea what this was. Glad to scoop it up after returning to school this week.
The one with the circular castle pieces that you have to insert cardboard into rather than the flat pre-printed plastic playing pieces. Unpunched. $3.99 at Value Village. Likely will keep it to play with my son as my old Stratego set is missing a piece or two.
After my good run at Border's clearance sale last month I figured I'd used up all my thrift luck for a while. But on my weekly stop at GW the thrift gods smiled on me again.
I was seeing the same old stuff as always, and was already out of there in my head when I checked the last shelf unit of toys. There underneath a Jurrasic Park game was a Battle Masters box in good shape! I whipped it out from underneath and slit the tape with my keys hoping it wasn't filled with old Risk pieces. Whoo-Hoo! I see the plastic map right away (which alone I would have gotten it for) and tons of plastic plus the tower walls. Ran up, bought it and left. At home, inventory is perfect. It's all there, and now I have TWO Battle Masters sets to play with for holiday gaming this weekend.
