Parents are in town. My wife, my dad, and I played a game of Ra.

We then played a quick game of Haggis up to a hundred points. My dad was clearly in the lead till the last trick, when two big bets put me ahead. This game I think is much better with three than two.

Finally read the rules for Cosmic Encounter and Cyclades, so hopefully I can get those out sometime next week.

I like Manila a lot. A bit of planning, a bit of luck and it plays sort of like Roulette with the betting and all, but it's always fun and enjoyable. Easy to teach and everyone is very involved. Excellent game for beginners too.

Then we played this. 3 of us.... for 4 and a half hours!!!!

It was my buddy who constantly took a looooooong time to think his possibilities through. And he tried to be cunning at that too. His son (15 years old) was playing for the 1st time. I've played the game before, even with my buddy, but it was a first for the son. To make a long story short, my buddy overthought everything and made mistakes. It came down to this:

his son and I were able to power up the same # of houses so the tie was broken on money, which I had more of. Overall tense and enjoyable game, but come on... 4.5 hours????? A bit ridiculous in my eyes.... shake

My buddy Rick (and his son Jeremy) and I played two games of Commands & Colors: Ancients on Saturday. This was an introduction of this game to these two, thought they've played the similar Memoir '44 and Battlecry. We had a great time, and they liked C&C:A better than M44 and BC (especially with the battle back rule).

For the record, we played the initial scenario, Akragas, twice. My friend chose to play Carthage both times (historically, Carthage lost this battle). The first game was a 'training' game to teach them the game, and I won 5-0. The second game was an 'official' game, and while I won again, the score was 5-2, and on the turn I won, three of my own units were reduced to one block each, ready to break, so this was a game that could have gone either way. Rick and his son are quick learners!

Settlers of Catan does not improve with your house rules. The best option if you don't like the rules as written is to just select another game.

My wife and daughters had a concert to go to on Saturday so I scheduled a games session then. We didn't know if there were going to be four players, in which case the game of choice was Civilization, or three, in which case MoV. Obviously it was three.

We started at 4:00 pm which is earlier than ususal for a weekend game. We decided to play to 3000 points which would stretch out the game a bit. The increased points goal made purchasing a freighter a good choice and with my Auto Pilot, I was able to make it work for me.

A WIN FOR ME - A FIRST IN MERCHANT OF VENUS !!!!

The game ended at 8:15 (we ate dinner also) and the three of us were looking around and looking at the clock. It's early - another game? Sure !!!

We played another game to 3000 points and again a freighter was instrumental in the win. The guy who won put a Switch Switch to good use with the freighter and had a commanding win. A great night - two back-to-back games of Merchant of Venus.

We played a 2-player game of Cave Troll which was fun, but I can see how the game would be even more interesting with 4 players. It's a placement game in which you can only place a figure by playing a card to allow it. But you can still move your figures to try to gain the most advantageous areas, and many of the figures have special powers.

I also played three missions of the solitaire game, Phantom Leader. My squadron is doing pretty well, so far, with 9 Victory Points already for this long 1967 campaign. I even used the random squadron variant to add some variety, so I couldn't just pick the best pilots and planes.

Oh, I also played a game of B-17: Queen of the Skies on Friday, starting a new campaign since my last plane and crew were destroyed (as chronicled in last week-end's geeklist). My new plane is "Ride of the Valkyries" and it is crewed by Valkyries led by Brunhilde. cool

That's it. I had plans, but it seems my plans don't work out very well, lately.

Played my first full game of Yggdrasil Friday night, and it was a HUGE hit with all three of us (me, John, and Joe). What a great game, full of exciting moments (both good and bad). We did not play with any of the Angry Enemy or Ragnarok cards.

We won the game, though I learned after the fact that the Valkyries can only move forward, not backward (we had been moving them in both directions). This undoubtedly gave us an unfair advantage, but I will say we did a very good job managing the bags.

However, at one point during the game, we were almost overtaken by +4 giants, but we ended up defeating them all. We never did complete a rune - seems that deck had been shuffled perfectly.

The Gods we played were:

Odin (Doug) - We were cautious about which enemies we countered and which ones we placed at the bottom of the deck. We caught onto the fact early on that we'd have to counter them all eventually, and didn't want to get stuck with a bunch of Nidhoggs or Fenrirs at the end of the game.

Frey (John) - Was able to accomplish a lot each turn with his four actions, had +3 swords against both Surt and Jormundgand. Saved our necks by defeating the +4 giant. Used elves effectively.

Heimdall (Joe) - In addition to being able to draw four tokens from the island bags, was almost uncannily able to always draw the Vikings; had Vikings a-plenty throughout the game. With one or two exceptions, always used enough of them to ensure victory. Also used elves effectively.

After that, John C had to leave, but Joe and I played Chicago Express with John B, who had showed up midway through the Yggdrasil. I played so poorly that I don't care to comment further cry

At long last, we finally played Railways of the World. First off, I was amazed how short the manual was, blew through it very quickly, and got the game set up. Our first game on the Mexico board was over very quickly, like under 45 minutes, with me owning north of the mountains, and Jen controlling the south. She won by 3 points.

2nd game, we played with the cards (taking out the US specific city related ones), and had a fantastic time. This game went for 90+ minutes, drawn out by lots of industrialization, and a lot of overlapping routes. Really enjoyed it, and immediately afterwards ordered the Mexico cards from Artscow. Can't wait for them to show up.

If anyone has an opinion, should we get Railways of Europe or England & Wales, for more 2p options?

Also played a single game of Principato
which we very much enjoyed. Every turn had interesting choices to make, and it was very satisfying to get into a good rhythm of actions. Not sure how much longterm play we'll get out of it 2p only, but I'd still seems like a sweet little package. Recommended!

Also set up to play Claustrophobia
but didn't get around to playing Next weekend, I suppose...

Saturday was Tringgcon. First I played Mansions of Madness- the one with the museum and the pharoh. Four players, one dead, one insane, one made it out alive with the cursed artifact, one (me) fate unknown...

Next Discworld: Ankh Morpok. First game was over so quickly we played a second game, which took rather longer.

Finally Space Empires. Suddenly Discworld doesn't seem a long game at all!

Also continued my PBEM games- Paths of Glory x2 and Here I stand.

Friday: Crossed off a couple games from my list of games to get played by end of the year. Material World wasn't as good as I remember it when I played it 7 or 8 years ago. Then played some Rum & Pirates which with 3 people is light-hearted fun.

Saturday: My old professor was in town and came over for dinner with the family. So we played a game of Ra in which he dominated. We then played a couple games of 7 Wonders.

Sunday: While our wives were playing Kinect and with the beat of "I've Got A Feeling" by the Black-Eyed Peas in the back ground, Jeremy and I played 5 games of Warhammer: Invasion. He kept with the same deck the whole time and beat me 4 out of 5 times. That Empire deck built around the Judgement of Verdana was just too tough. Though my Corrupted Chaos deck finally beat him.

I didn't get a lot of gaming in this weekend. Friday night was it. We played a couple games of Pergamon which is quickly becoming a favorite of my wife. It has just the right level of complexity and interest level for her. That is to say, it's not going to kill you with fiddly rules and brain burning decisions, yet you still have to consider your moves each round. She really takes to the theme as well. Even as a two player game this one seems to be working for us. This almost assuredly puts Thebes -a game long on my wishlist- into the must buy list for my next order.

As is customary lately we also rolled a few games of Quarriors. The game plays so quickly and the dice rolling is so addictive for us that this game has made it into our regular weekend rotation. I can't wait for the game to blossom with more expansions and dicey goodness.

Friday I was in the country side in a summer cottage with about ten ppl. First we played Wits and Wagers which is a brilliant game in my opinion. Then we turned of the lights, put two candles in the middle of the table and played The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow.
It was a first time for many of the players and a huge success, except some ppl whined about the player elimination.

Then we played ''Actionary'' which is like Pictionary except that you have to act the words. Which was a disaster, it was a boys vs girls competition and the words we came up with proved too difficult for the girls to handle and it ended up in a huge argument, very childish .
Btw actionary was not my suggestion the player generated words are a mistake in my opinion. To play something like this you have to use premade words from a game of some sort like maybe the cards from pictionary.

On sunday I played Puerto Rico in a local gaming establishment, it was my first time with buldings from an expansion and I like this concept of using random buildings, it prevents the game from becoming something like chess were you can use the same strategys over and over. Then I had my first games of King of Tokyo and Witch's Brew, both ok games.

Wow I played alot more then I thought I had.

It was the first time either of us played the game. The rules were a fairly tough read but as we applied them in the various situations they made good sense. We discovered a few things (we think):

South's biggest weapons are the "always go last and usually go first" ability. Lee's daily ability ain't too shabby either.
Attacking (especially for the South) is dangerous as your point unit gets flipped and you are almost defenseless for the ensuing counterattack.
The South needs to rely on movement
Using arty as a point unit in a contested battle is the way to go.
You can get some really wild swings in battle
The South seems very vulnerable to counterattacks. Their units are big but can't take very much punishment.
Moving for the Union is a real crapshoot.

I am not sure we figured out how to move our guys effectively. Just moving them blows the leader for the day.

It was a fun fame and we got done in about 3 hours. Not bad for the first time thru.

Had a fantastic weekend of gaming that actually began on Thursday! One of my best friends who currently lives in Los Angeles had to take the rest of his vacation days by the end of the month and so came back to Texas for some much needed hangin' out. He spent the first half the week with his family then I got custody Thurs-Sunday laugh With my other best friend (who did not move away!), we had a blast playing our current favorite - Small World.

Last time he visited (July) I introduced both of them to it as well as my burgeoning board game hobby in general. It was met enthusiastically and I since added Small World: Cursed! and Small World: Be Not Afraid.... We played several games on Thursday and Friday, and a four player game on Saturday when my wife could join us (with her marauding ratmen angry) Awesome game that we have yet to tire of, and definitely look to be acquiring Underground at some point in the future. I will mention that Were- seems disgustingly powerful in every game it comes up, to the point where a player used Were-Elves for the entire game and though didn't win, was on par with those of us that used 2 or 3 races.

We also managed to sneak a few games of Race for the Galaxy throughout the weekend after I had previously introduced both of them to Keldon's AI. It was a fun, and I acted as the "computer" by reminding everyone of their card abilities and what not. Need to get more familiar with this one so gameplay runs smoother.

The real MVG of the weekend turned out to be Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game, a game I have played with a varying amount of people and gamer types, introducing it to LA friend for the first time. We all had a great time: on Friday we played Save the Townsfolk and Burn 'em Out, with the humans winning the former quite handily and the latter the humans started out strong and barely squeeked out a win after two deaths (which the Zed player was disappointed as we all thought the game ended after two hero deaths, but apparently thats only for certain scenarios?) On Saturday we tried one of the web scenarios - All Hallow's Eve. The first game was almost a complete failure as the very first townsfolk he found was the zombie master (though it took like 4 rolls to reveal him, he was tight lipped since he harbored the dark secret!) The second was one of the most fun sessions I've had playing LNOE yet, with the zombie master finally cropping up at the second to last townsfolk (Deputy Taylor, who resisted the charms of three women but finally revealed his true nature to the Sheriff!) That whole corner was well defended but thanks to a heroic resolved chainsaw wielding Becky, and two dynamite throws we cleared it out!

Finally, as if all this wasn't enough, we played a 4 player game of Dominion with the wife late Saturday night. She kicked our ass, though my theory is that we'd been drinking the entire afternoon and evening and were ripe for the plucking...

All in all it was my best weekend for board gaming yet, and though it is a rare occurrence to see my out of state friend I hope to have many more like it.

Total plays (Thursday, Friday , Saturday)
7 x Small World
4 x Race for the Galaxy
4 x Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
1 x Dominion

1. Junta: Great game... all the players were new except for me. This was my only win of the night and it was a great victory. Junta is now one of my favorite games. I managed to win barely with 23, My gf finished 2nd with 22. Close gamewhistle. I had to perform 3 assasinations. I never was president nor Minister but the government treated me more or less ok.

Great game I totally recommend it.

2. Quarriors! x 2: Cute game but a little too random for my liking. I prefer to play Dominion. Carlos won both times.

3. Slide 5 x 2: I finished 2nd. Daniel won. It was nice to play with 9 players.

4, Snorta! x 2: I forgot I also win a game of this. Ultra fun game (with the right crowd)

Played a two-day-long (!) game of Munchkin with my son. Got the game in the September 2011 Small Things Math Trade because my son enjoyed it. He had a great time in the game. I had a great time because I was playing with him, but that's not a game that will rank high on my list. Just two players and it was endless. shake

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game finally hit the table for two. My son and I played adventure #3, where we had to retrieve someone's lost gear. Were getting our butts kicked, but as we were the Cleric and Paladin, we regenerated hit points rather easily. Then an Encounter card brought out Ashardalon, and I thought our goose was cooked. But we put him in the farthest room and were able to finally locate the gear and get out just before the dragon got to our tile. Luck? Skill? Maybe a bit of both. But the two-player game sure brought out the lack of rules clarity and the maddening "Fluxx-like" rules and conditions stacking that drives me nuts in some games. Every card I drew left me with a half-dozen questions, not a problem I'd had in playing solo adventures. So I'm stuck in that Catch-22 place between hoping that future plays will clarify the gameplay and not wanting to play the game because of the rules fuzziness.

--Friday--
A game of Race for the Galaxy with all 3 expansions at my wife's request. I spent all game drawing just the right cards, but she was only 8 points behind at the end.

--Saturday--
I invited some friends over for Merchant of Venus. Other than myself, only one had played before. I'm not sure the whole table loved it quite as much as I do, but it seemed like everybody enjoyed themselves well enough.

Afterwards, we killed an hour with Bohnanza. One of the players requested it, as he can't turn down a chance to try a new Uwe game. After a quick rules explanation, we were off. It seemed like everybody enjoyed this one as well.

I played 4 solo games of Se4x, and lost three of them. But that one victory was sweet.

Two games of Rune Age this weekend.

They were our first games, and we liked it a lot.

Again, my "weekend" was mid-week, but I still managed to get some in.

We had another Tannhauser slugfest, with the luck fluctuating wildly: at one point I had all my characters and my oppenent was down to two or three; at the end, he had one still in one piece, IIRC

Next up was two-player Agricola with, as usual, Agricola: Farmers of the Moor; my opponent managed a new high score, very annoying.

To be added to .... my computer is unhappy
EDIT--it's happier

Then we tried to rescue the colonists again, but this time it went really badly wrong (and both of us are fairly experienced playes), with none of the characters getting to the ducts in the second scenario (Ferro and Spunkmeyer were killed as per usual).

Finally we had a really good (and very long) two-player game of High Frontier with the High Frontier Poster Map and using the expansion rules (and a few house tweaks). We added a crewed mission to one of the Uranian satellites as an objective (return not necessary!) and as an end-of-game trigger, and after lots of faffing about by both of us my opponent arrived on Oberon in 2075 (yes, 64 turns); I was lurking in the Saturnian area at that point. He won 13 to 12 on standard VPs, or 23 to 12 because we had assigned 10 VPs to the Uranian mission. This is a wonderful game--Triton next

Saturday:

-Hey, That's My Fish!: An enjoyable game played with my little brother.

Sunday:

-Atlas & Zeus: A great fighting game to begin the day!

-Duell (1975)x2: One of my favorite abstracts.

-Heroes Of The World: The afternoon, I went to my friend's house and we started our day with this. A very good area control game with a lot of luck. Very underestimated in my opinion.. ninja

-Metropolys: This game was very good with 2 player! I might consider to play this one a little more often.

-Agricola: Excellent game! I started out with agriculture and, a little bit later in the game, begun raising animals. My opponent did mostly houses construction and births. He won...

Friday night was set aside for playing Settlers of Catan with some friends who are new to gaming and really wanted to try Settlers. Even though Settlers isn't my first choice, I'm very much of the opinion that if newbies are keen to play a game, then PLAY IT! While we were waiting for my wife to join us, however, I also introduced them to Dominion. We got in a couple of hands of Dominion before we switched to Catan. We played Settlers twice -- although I like Settlers and respect it as a classic of Eurogaming, I think I have had enough Settlers of Catan for a long time.

On Sunday night, the wife and I played Acquire for the very first time (I know, I know). We were expecting an interesting game and we were not disappointed. What a terrific game Acquire is! There are definitely more games of Acquire in our near future.
