2011-10-01 - Game day at Sages. Got in some great games with good friends!
Pandemic
Acquire - Finally got my wife to play this. She didn't hate it.
Sentinels of the Multiverse
Cards Against Humanity
Coloretto
Glory to Rome
Sentinels of the Multiverse
A la carte x 3 Tons of shocked looks on some hardcore gamers faces when 1 - They had no idea how they have never heard of this game. and 2 - How such a corny looking game can be so much fun.
Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set - I ordered Battleship Galaxies for my boy and I, and got lucky and had someone willing to teach it to us.

2011-10-02
Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive Game Set - Went over the rules, and played the starting scenario with my boy.

Played Defenders of the Realm with the Dragon Expansion. I used a 7 Generals varient which worked well but made the game much longer.

I played Go Away Monster with my 3 year old son.

Not so much gaming this weekend, but quite a lot in the past week.

Our first smashing game of Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple which you can read about in my session report, aptly named: Wow, storytelling games are fun!

A game of Elder Sign (Am I really the only person on the planet who doesn’t like Elder Sign that much?)

A horrible slew of defeats in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - Horrible, horrible draws on the passage down the Anduin. We wiped twice on a location that stops you from drawing cards and with two of those 5 threat locations in the staging area. We needed 13+ willpower to make an inch of progress on the active location - without drawing cards! Very funny, invisible deck gods. When bad luck strikes in Magic: The Gathering, at least one of you wins!

Then on the weekend a nice scifi homebrew session where we found out we have a alien parasite living in our brain who has now split into a benevolent and a sociopathic part - the latter part threatening to fully take us over unless we find her a suitable host. My neurologist character is thrilled!

Long Weekend so go to play something special. An all-day 6-player game of Tales of the Arabian Nights. Had 2 new players who, depsite the length of the game with 6, still really enjoyed it. The funniest moment came when one player approached Baghdad for the win only to become imprisoned, sex-changed and made envious all in the same turn to halt their progress.

Also enjoyed multiple games of Quarriors. The length of play has made is very popular with my friends.

Yes, my friend pulled BATTLEDOME out of his attic. The trashiest of ameritrash indeed. Good for a laugh, though.

So the more serious games played, though were the following:

Crows - Came in 3rd after being 40 points behind everyone else!

King of Tokyo - My cousin got this on Saturday, so we played about 4 rounds of it. Good smashy fun, even though it feels like mostly luck

We got in 2 games of Stone Age, which is my newest game. One of the games was a 2-player game that my wife and I managed to set up, play, and put away during our son's nap. The other game was a 4-player game. I like it better with 4 players, but it still works well with 2 players. I won both games.

We also played 4 consecutive 4-player games of Dominion. This is currently the hottest game in our group, and in just a bit over a year, I've acquired all of the expansions and promo cards available. Of the 4 games we played, 1 used platinum/colony, and 1 used potions. I won once, my wife won once, and one of our friends won twice.

We finished of the evening with a couple rounds of Farkle.

Played a bunch of games this weekend. Friday night started later than usual with a game of Battlestar Galactica. We started out with a brutal couple of attack cards that had our ship surrounded by cylon ships, and every one of our civilian ships out. We protected them pretty well and made a jump that took us a distance of 1, and shortly after, someone spiked a check, and the accusations started coming out. I pinpointed who it was through the card color, certain things they said (which aligned with a failed check), and everyone started accusing me of being the bad guy. Well, apparently they all felt strongly enough and spent a ton of cards to brig me, and I almost was able to keep myself out (failed the check by 1), but I was brigged. We started failing a bunch of checks due to the shortage of cards everyone had. Then the guy who I had pinpointed used his once per game power to automatically fail the skill check on the turn before his where he then revealed. We lost shortly after that. Those fools. Maybe next time they'll listen...

After that, we played a game of RoboRally, where I was in the lead, but ended up making a couple mistakes heading to the final flag where I fell off the board and had to reset at the previous flag.

Then Saturday was a monthly meetup to play games all day and night. Started playtesting a new prototype of one of the members, then played a game of Elder Sign for the first time. It was a little easier than I expected, and the owner of the game mentioned that was a concern of the gaming community.

Then the library closed, and many of us headed to the meetup host's house for some more games. A quick game of Transamerica was played, followed by a game of Pirate Fluxx. Then someone brought out Loot to keep the pirate theme going.

After dinner, it was a quick game of Saboteur followed by probably the most hilarious game of Bohnanza I have ever played. There were some goofy trades and pretty hilarious commentary throughout.

After that I headed home, so I could get up early the next morning and head out to the last day of the Michigan Renaissance Festival. It was a fun weekend!

Played several sessions of this while my wife played the second Professor Layton game on the DS. Fought some big ol' monsters while acquiring practically nothing of value. Oh well. I'm closer to HR-upping, I guess.

Finca was also "played" in the sense that I set this up on the table and re-read the rulebook. My son is (I think) cutting his teeth so our weekend was spent rocking him while wearing earplugs. Finca is still set up on our table so maybe I'll play it tonight.

Games, games and more games!
mbmbmbmbmb
3 player session on Friday night, with Robo Rally, Shipyard, Dorn, Diamonds Club and some fillers - good night of games.

Saturday was Gradpad games, where I learnt one new game - Pirate's Gold - played two games of Ascension, one of Race for the Galaxy, and lost another game of Ashardalon - against a rather nasty enraged monster! Then came home with the kids and spent the evening enjoying the rather unusual October heat and sun in the garden, with a quick game of Uno before bedtime. Later in the evening, after my husband and friends had come back from Gradpad, we played some more games - I learnt Crappy Birthday (simpler GiftTrap, great fun), Jager und Sammler (more complex Hey That's my Fish - enjoyed that too!), and played a couple of fillers.

Sunday morning was another morning of games - I learnt Gloria Mundi - and had the funniest game, as we completely ran out all the green cubes several times over from the way I played - I ended the game with over 50, and at one point in the game had way more than that! Didn't win, but came a respectable second - luckily I found a way to convert my huge numbers of cubes in only two colours into something useful - for a long while mid-game it looked like I was just cube-hoarding! Also played Fauna, and came third - that never happens - I'm always first or second!!! We had a very bizarre selection of animals that pretty much all had their location in their name - Mississippi alligator, Ganges dolphin, Amazon dolphin - which made the location side of the game a bit odd. Also played a McMulti, while simultaneously playing Junior Monopoly with my son on another table - that was a bit odd!! Luckily it's a game where there isn't much to do between turns, so in some ways it worked - however, it would have worked a lot better if I hadn't originally been banker in McMulti!!!! Then had to take my daughter to a birthday party - luckily outside in the garden, so I could enjoy more of this unusual sun!

Ascension picked as my geeklist entry because I played it on three separate occasions over the weekend, with three different groups!

Managed several rounds of Space Alert - a game I have great trouble getting to the table, and continued the sci-fi theme with Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm.

I've kept my eye on Gears of War: The Board Game and was impressed. I liked the life/action card mechanic from Middle-Earth Quest and was pleased to see it return here. Gears of War: The Board Game is similar to Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game with a greater variety of AI behaviours, and similar to Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game with more depth in the hand-management. So far, it's my favourite co-operative dungeon crawl, even though the colour palette is brown and boring.

A game of Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion was next: I'm reaching saturation point for now. I was Khorne again and thoroughly messed up early on.

A game of Liar's Dice finished off the day.

Firday night AJ came over and along with my wife, we played a round of Dominion followed by two games of Catan. Each of us got to win once, with me winning the Dominion, quite handily, and them taking a Catan win a piece. To cap the evening off, AJ and I played a game of Mr. Jack and I was able to escape Jack in the 5th round or so.

Saturday, I went to Great Hall Game where I met some new folks and taught a gentleman named Bill how to play Mr. Jack. He enjoyed it quite a bit and said he would probably pick it up. He was the investigator and the game went the distance with me keeping Jack along with an ever dwindling cast of suspects in the light. In the last round, Bill had to decide between two suspects to accuse and he could not see how he could get to Sherlock, whom he correctly suspected to be Jack, and had to settle for Jeremy to make the accusation. This cost him the game and afterwards I showed him how he could have reached Sherlock to make the accusation.

Next up was a game of The Walking Dead Board Game. I am not a Zombie genre fan, so the theme didn't do it for me. The game itself does not offer any ineresting new mechanics. The different colored dice are neat, but there's no decision making revolving around them. You just collect more dice via followers. Also, I cannot see how the game plays in the advertised play time. I did win a 3 player game in about an hour.

Next up was a 4 player of Battlestar Galactica. An early spiked skill check in the early stage convinced us we had a Cylon and narrowed it down between two players. Unfortunately, it turns out it was just a mistake and neither of those players was a Cylon. After the sleeper phase, my logic in tracking down the Cylon was broken due to that spiked check from the first half and the humans quickly found themselves brigged. Massive victory for the Cylons.

While I was at GHG I purchased a Cribbage board and the wife and I learned to play Saturday night and played another game Sunday. We are now 1-1 at Cribbage. Last night, I played some more Cribbage on the PC to see what mistakes we were making and we were making a few, but we got it 90% correct. Great little card game and I am happy that I now know how to play this classic game.

It was a busy weekend, but I'm thankful that our friends were willing to come over for a little gaming yesterday evening.

We managed to get two games to the table. First we played SW: Underground, which my partner got for his birthday. We'd played it before, but our friends (who love SW) had not. So it definitely went over well. The Quarreling Dwarves were the big conquerors this time around.

Then we tried our first play of Tales of the Arabian Nights - I'd received it recently in a trade. Figuring out the matrix system took us a couple turns, but then it became second-nature and we were deep into the game. All four of us come from theatrical backgrounds, so we really got into the storytelling aspect and this game was a definite winner. The game didn't go too long (I think about 90 minutes) and it was a good time even when you were losing. Thumbs up!

As usual, 2 groups of gaming on Saturday. My morning group started off with Tinners' Trail, which probably hadn't hit the table in a year. I'm glad it did, while I don't think its Wallace's best effort (i.e., its not Brass), I think its a good game in its own right. Next up was an old game I found when moving called Corsair!. I had remembered playing and enjoying this one 25-30 years ago, so I asked the group to indulge me and play a game of it. I found that its still a decent game, and its certainly not state of the art from a production or rules standpoint. Still, it was fun. Next up was The Hanging Gardens, which we've now played 2 weeks in a row. Its a good filler game. Nothing earth-shattering, and fun. We wrapped up with Dixit Odyssey, which was a good time. The Dixit group are definitely my favorite family games these days.

For the evening group, we started out with a quick game of For Sale while we waited for some people to show up. As always, it was fun, although 6 players is not the sweet spot for this one. Then it was on to a 6 player Power Grid. I'd never played this one 6 player before, and it held up well, although it did slow things down a bit. Finally, we played a 4 player game of Merkator, which I find enjoyable and challenging every time, despite a bit of a luck factor. I do believe that the luck factor really isn't that much higher than other Uwe Rosenberg games, though. We had 2 new players, and still finished in about 2 hours. One of the new players had a lot of analysis paralysis going on, which slowed it down a bit. I believe that Merkator is generally a 90 minute game, tops, when people have played it before.

I got Armored Knights: Operation Gazelle's Chinese Farm scenario set up over the weekend, I didn't have time to start moving pieces. And, this morning, one of my cats was sleeping on the map. I forgot to close the door to the game room. Oops! Thankfully, set-up damage was minimal. Maybe 6 or 8 stacks have to be reset, and then I can roll!

Friday:
Combat Commander: Europe

Saturday:
The Manhattan Project

Sunday:
Space Empires 4x

My wife was nice enough to play some meaty games this weekend, and the GMT games really filled the bill nicely. (We are both eagerly awaiting their release of Urban Sprawl in a few weeks!) The game I'd like to highlight, though, is The Manhattan Project, the latest PnP release from Minion Games. I've been buying and building their PnP titles rather than spend the money to fund the Kickstarter version of the games (I don't have the money for the full game, I enjoy making the PnP sets, and they store in a lot less space). Venture Forth is very good, Kingdom of Solomon is a bit less good but still lots of fun, but Manhattan Project seems like the best of the bunch (this may change after multiple plays, but I don't expect it to). I really wish more companies would consider going this route (together, all 3 games in PDF form cost around $25).

The game is at heart another "buy VPs most efficiently" Euro that utilizes worker placement. What sets the game apart, besides the theme, is that the workers come in 3 different types, and once you've placed a worker, it will remain where it is until all you retrieve all your workers. This leads to some subtle trade-offs and some not-so-subtle blocking, and the tempo of the game is quite interesting to manage. When you place workers, only one can be placed on the main board (which has the better actions, by and large) and then, like Le Havre, you can place workers in private buildings you've built for yourself (unlike Le Havre, you can place as many workers as you want at a time in these buildings).

There are many cool mechanisms which ensure player interaction - you can airstrike your opponent's buildings, which forces them to pay to make them usable, and you can hire spies which let you place your own workers in opponent buildings. The goal of all this is to have the right type of workers and the necessary ingredients (plutonium or uranium) to build bombs. This is the only way to get VP, and the game ends immediately (for 2) once you hit 70. Ashar brought our first game to a sudden end by building a high value bomb to add to her first, catching me unaware. All in all there is a lot to explore in this game, the bits are very cool, the game looks very good. With 2, the pleasures are more subtle than with more, I would imagine - I think with 4 this game would be rocking (although perhaps a little chaotic). I'd highly recommend checking this game out if you are at all interested in printing your own copy.

A good gaming weekend. I played a few games for the first time.
Vinhos- A four player game that I played for the first time. There are a lot of decisions to make and the game is not forgiving so every action can be pivital.

A Game of Thrones (first edition)-Another one I played for the first time. I really liked this one but I am afraid it may be prone to kingmaker. We played just the base game however so I would think the more we add the better it will be. Look forward to playing this one again.

Julius Caesar-No one can win as Caesar. Has anyone who has played this had any luck with him? If so what is the secret because we have tried many different tactics and all have failed.

Biblios-A quick filler that I polayed for the first time. Quick and easy to teach I would play again as I was waiting for the main event to start.

Shogun-My favorite of the weekend. This is the second time I played this one and I really like it. The combat resolution mechanism is very cool and can be cruel.

Had a 4 person group on Saturday, we started with a quick game of Quarriors, my friend Shnik's first play. To my surprise, we ended up only playing one game as Shnik hated it. He claimed there was not enough strategy and too much luck from having to draw proper dice and then having to roll the proper outcome. I think it had to do with his poor strategy of passing the opportunity to summon Assistants early in the game to get better dice and ultimately being blanked. I won the game 12-6-5-0, scoring often with my Defender of the Pale.

We then played Roborally, my first time playing this game. The misses and I enjoyed it very much, adding it to my must have list. We played 3 games. Game 1, Shnik won easily, leaving me and Al well behind, my girlfriend managed to be 1 flag behind. Game 2 was a much closer affair, Shnik won simply due to card values, pushing me away from the final flag and moving on it. Finally, game 3, I won easily without any competition.

Very nice session, I'll definitely try to get roborally soon, I could see this being success with my parents as well.

Definitely getting back in my gaming groove! Saturday night played three great games of Dominion (Seaside and Cornucopia). Then closed out the night with a couple games of the fun real-time game Toppo. This one will get a lot of play at my house as a palate cleanser.

Started a new D&D 4e campaign on Friday. Lots of fun! No defenders and half a healer makes for a challenging group. I hope we survive for a while!!

Saturday, I got to play a 4 player Runewars game. Lost that, but it was fun!

Sunday, played a round of Citadels, and got to try out the Shadows over Camelot: Merlin's Company expansion. Makes for a much harder game, but I think I like having more knights to choose from.

Overall a very busy and fun weekend!!

(I also got into the beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic. but I can't talk about )

Played Mouse Guard for the first time this weekend. I picked up the comic on Wednesday, liked it so much I went back to my LGS bought the RPG on Thursday, and ran it on Saturday.

We played fast and loose on the rules and used pre made characters but my four players and me really enjoyed it. Usually we are a Shadowrun or Legend of the Five Rings RPG group but our other GM needed a break.

Mouse Guard's system is really neat the way conflicts are done, the most innovative I've ever seen. You choose three actions to do in a turn then compare against the GM's actions. These four different actions (attack, defend, feint, and maneuver) work for any type of conflict, whether it's combat, a chase, war or negotiations.

Our adventure included a ambush by Weasel Bandits, a Negotiation gone wrong with a mother snake protecting her eggs from the Guard and a chase with a hawk....who won the chase and carried off one of the players...Though he was eventual saved! Good Times.

The game may seem trite and small but it's the scale that gives the universe such a heroic feel. Your playing as the smallest creature in the world and everyone is out to get you, yet you persevere. It has a Shadow of the Colossus feel where you defeat larger than life opponents.

Overall a great game for a few months worth of games, though I worry about it's longevity, I'm still happy I got back on the GM horse after a six year hiatus!

I played four games of Lord of the Rings the Card Game, once solo against Carrock (lost miserably), once two player against Gollum (we won) and twice against Dol Guldur (gave up on the second turn, and "won" - we realized too late that the Nazgul enters play when the prisoner is rescued - ooops blush).

Saturday I played a game that my daughter and I designed. It's not a very good game, I'm afraid, but it was fun creating it (much more fun than playing it).

Also, I played a game of Dice Town with my wife and daughter. True to form my daughter ran away with it. We enjoy it, though it has been quite a while since our last game.
