I'm dedicating this Geek list to anyone who has ever lost a game in all of the mryriad of ways both common, unusual, and spectacular. I'm curious as to how many people besides myself have fallen victim to a Geek's worst nightmare.

List the game you lost and how this unspeakable tragedy occurred so that I can grieve with you in remembering this low point in your life. I'm thinking as long as I don't see the Collector's War Of the Ring on this list, I'll be able to handle all the entries.

I'll start the list off with this one. It took me forever to find a copy of this. During my first game with friends, a friend of one of the players came over to drop something off for him and was dipping. He set his "spit cup" on the table. I was on the phone upstairs. Yeah, the "spit cup" was knocked over staining the board and the Babylonians. At a suggestion from one of the players, the guy left before I came downstairs. The rest of my group tried to clean the mess up but the board was hopelessly stained.

To make matters worse, I finally found a second copy of the game and guess what....It had TWO copies of the left panel and no right panel.....AHHHHHH!! It was actually a manufacturer's mistake and was boxed this way. Too bad Avalon Hill was already out of business. I've since found a right-hand panel for the game....*sigh*

This game was left over at a friend's house after playing and was put in his closet under the stairs with his other games. Yeah, the hot water heater was in that closet. And yes, it went out in the worst way possible. The box had HUGE water stains on it and while the pieces were o.k, the board was bowed and wouldn't lay flat. Many of my friend's games were ruined including about 10 General Magazines that had to be tossed.

My friend (with the hot water heater closet) and I took this over to play against some people we met through our FLGS. It was a two day session so we left it set up at the guy's house. The guy who owned the house had a dog. The dog got hold of the box and instruction-manual for a chew toy. There was also dog poop on the rules when we reconvened the next day. Needless to say my games don't leave my house anymore or if they do, I'm always nearby.

I have the Avalon Hill version on my shelf. This is my most recent loss but the game is still playable. My youngest daughter when she was 2 got hold of a silver sharpee. Yes, the game-box has new and wonderful art as she tried to color the "horsees". Not a big loss as only the box was affected but still bugs me whenever I walk into my game-room and see it on the shelf.

My most painful loss of the 5 game tragedies on my personal loss list. My wife and I were in a hurry to go somewhere and I wanted to stop by a Kinkos to make copies of the backs of the playing cards (open ground side) so that I could cut them out, glue-stick them to the new Pacific and Desert terrain I'd downloaded, and then laminate them. Well, as we're hurrying to get in the car I set the entire set of playing cards on top of my blazer inside a plastic card carrying box but the lid wasn't on it because of our rush to get out the door. I realized I forgot it on the counter inside.

I went back inside to get it and remembered something else I'd also forgot, including my drink for the road. Having picked up my drink and the other item, I completely forgot the plastic lid to my carrying box which was the reason I came back inside in the first place. Thinking I now had everything, I rushed back to the blazer and got in. As my wife drove off, we were a couple miles down the road when I looked in the side-view mirror. Yeah, every 2 seconds or so Up Front cards were floating down behind us into traffic. Not only did I NOT get the lid to my card box, I forgot to grab the box with my cards STILL ON TOP of the blazer. I was sick to my stomach and my wife really felt bad for me. I didn't even bother asking her to stop so I could try and find any cards. I lost around 20 cards in that little two mile jaunt. That was just a bad day all around cry

Well, this might have topped my Up Front incident but I was able to fix it with considerable work. This is the closest I've come to just about killing a small child (yes, I'm joking), but you know what I mean.

Back when I had a room-mate before marriage, I used to have a corner of the living room dedicated for painting minis. He had this girl he was nuts over and she had a two year old girl (You can see where this is going). She ended up spending the night at our apt after they watched a movie and her kid fell asleep on the couch. "Little April" had woke up early (as small kids do) and proceeded to open my paints and go to town on my miniatures I had prepped on the table as well as 3 space marines from my Space Hulk game that I already completed. I'm no pro painter but they were semi-pro and looked (past tense) really good. Little April had also spilled paint on my chair and table. She also trashed a couple of paint brushes. Was it the crappy ones I use for dry-brushing.....OH NO, she picked up two of my expensive sable brushes. Is it any coincidence that she chose Snotling Green and Chaos Orange to desecrate my precious Blood Angels? She and her mother never came over again. It took me WEEKS to get those minis looking good in the first place. It's a wonder I even decided to have children of my own after that.

Moved some stuff into storage at my dad's house. After a few years, I kinda forgot about alot of that stuff. Then there was a house fire. A total loss of everything including the stuff I had in storage.

This included my AH copy of Republic of Rome.

In conclusion: Rome burned.

We have a chest freezer in the basement. My wife sent me down to go get something out of it, I had to shift a number of things around in order to get it, put everything back the way it was (or so I thought - Foreshadowing!) and went back upstairs.

Several days later my wife and I were both in the basement. I noticed Robo Rally was near the chest freezer and looking a little damp.

I had inadvertantly taken out a bag on home-made smoked chicken stock, set the frozen bag on top of Robo Rally and left it there for days. The freezing process had created small punctures in the bag and Robo Rally was now a solid mass of poultry juice, plastic and cardboard (and possibly mould - I didn't really examine it). Several liters of chicken stock into a cardboard box...there's no recovering from that.

Even worse, it was a gift from a manager who was really excited when she discovered I like games. She lives in California and had it shipped to me in Toronto.

I'm still kicking myself over the catastrophe I caused.

Due to limited space and the unusual "flat pack" this game came in, I ended up storing this game with a few others ontop of my chest of drawers. You know, the chest of drawers right below my air conditioner?

It didn't take long before the AC developed a leak that proceeded to soak my stack of games! This one was second from the bottom and was completely destroyed. I've thought of replacing the game but it's a little too pricey on ebay and I didn't enjoy it that much to begin with.

Fortunately, my Magic Realm was on top of this one and survived relatively unscathed. The plastic lid of the flat pack probably saved my Magic Realm. My game on the bottom? The loss of that one really hurt.

Shortly after purchasing Pandemic, I brought it to my girlfriend's house and we played a game with her and her sister. We were towards the end when her sister bumped a glass full of water and spilled it all over the board, cards, etc. She ended up buying us a new copy. People always make fun of me when I ask if we can leave drinks in the kitchen or put water bottles on the ground, but I only do it to avoid situations that would make them feel bad about ruining a game. whistle

I don't really know exactly how my Barbarian Quest Pack was destroyed.

After playing HeroQuest and its expansions often during my youth, it was relegated to my parents' summer home in Wisconsin, where it would see occasional play with the kid next door in a battle variant we made up.

Years later, I decided to reclaim it. I found most of the pieces to the base game, but all that remained of the Barbarian Quest Pack was the manual, a few of the cards, a single ice gremlin, and a polar warbear.

My extended family often visits this summer home as a vacation spot, and they sometimes bring friends. My guess is one of their friend's kids were playing with the figures down by the beach and either buried them in the sand or threw them in the water...

Me and my brothers used to play this version all the time. One of my fondest memories will be ringing in the new millennium while playing risk. We played it so often the box was kept in the closet, the board in the bookshelf amongst the books, and the cloth bags with the metal pieces inside also on the bookshelf. One day my mother was cleaning up the house and tossed the cloth bags thinking they were just junk left out. By the time i had noticed the wonderful metal pieces were gone it was too late. It didnt help that years later i tried to find this version again only to discover it going for as much as 300 dollars online. At least every now and again i get to tell my mother "hey, remember when you threw away the metal pieces to that really valuable version of risk?"

Well, as stupidity would have it, I didn't turn on the garage light (it was late) and mixed up the boxes. Rolled the bin up the driveway and didn't think about it, until the next day I got in the car and saw the recycling stuff on the seat. But I did get to see the recycling truck as it drove away with my game. gulp

I had just gotten the game and had to take a number 2 real bad. Instead of picking up a newspaper to read on the john like most normal folks I took the game in there and decided to peruse the rules and the contents of the box. Upon getting up I accidentally dropped the tactics cards into the bowl.

On the bright side a lot of people say this game is better without the tactics cards anyway. So, yeah...I'll go with that excuse for the reason I don't play this game with tactics cards. Yes I know I didn't lose the whole game, but this was a pretty spectacular fail on my part.

Lost this one to drugs! Yes, you read that correctly. I moved out of my parents house for the first time, into what can only be described as a party house. My roommates weren't gamers by any means, so I tried to introduce them to gaming with this game (it was the best game I had at the time to do the job).

We started playing one day but didn't get to finish, so we left it set up on the table. I left for work and everything was fine. I got home there was a full party raging in the house, drunks and stoned people everywhere. As well as pieces of the game. There was no use looking for any of the pieces that night, so I tried to have a good time.

The next morning, while cleaning up the house, I was able to find about a third of the commodities tokens and half of the cards, never did find any of the wax crayons or train markers. The board was covered in beer and burn mark, where several people had tried to put out cigarettes and most likely other substances on the board.

I moved out a couple of weeks later, back to the parents house.

I lost this one to a roof leak in my aparment back in 1998.

Ironically the building managers had just had the roof redone, but the workers had forgotten to seal it (or forgot to put "flashing" on it, or some such construction terminology; I never did understand what it was they'd done wrong). But whatever it was had essentially rendered the roof permeable.

Anyway, a couple nights later we had a heavy rain storm. I was awakened by what sounded suspiciously like a waterfall in my closet.

I got up and discovered the carpet was soaked. Opened the closet door and sure enough there was a steady stream of water running down the back wall.

In the aftermath of the disaster i had to wash all my clothes, and deal with annoying carpet replacement for a couple of days, but the permanent damage was done to the games. Luckily I got the rest of the collection out of there before they could get soaked too.

Origins was a complete and sodden-cardboard write off. Also lost to me was History of the World.

This particular story has a happy ending... I went off on the building manager the next morning and told him that two "out of print, rare and expensive collectors games" had been lost due to their negligence.

They reimbursed me $200 for the two games.

What embarrasses me is that I did all of the damage to the game myself. I wish I could say it was one of my friends that forgot their role card in their back pocket when they did the laundry... soblue

I and some friends were at a cabin in the mountains. As usual I brought some games. Uno had to be played at least once.shake We play with loads of house rules that make the game exilarating, so that's not a bad game in our book. But after the third game in a row, it is in my own. So I decided to skip the fourth play, and went outside to have a very important phone call.whistle
Every manche we play the winner gets to add some rules. The winner of the third match was an American (shake) that had a fantastic Idea.
I came back and found him munching a red three. You could eat the last card you had in hand, you know... That's the rules.
I was mildly disappointed at this but actually I know they'd never tried this on any other game of mine. That was the spare copy and he knew. (yes I have two copies don't ask why)
Now whenever I pull out a game with casual/new gamers I add after the usual reccomendations "Please don't eat any components". And you know, my friend almost swallowed a coin from Citadels anyway.

This was one of my favorite games as a pre-schooler (along with Don't Break the Ice).

Back then, my parents had a maid for housekeeping and nannying. One day, she took the beans (back then, the beans included were real, dried red beans), and proceeded to prepare them for cooking!
