I was watching I, Claudius last evening, and there was a scene in which Augustus, Lucius, and Gaius played a board game called Empire. The board was divided into areas, and the playing pieces were figures representing legions. A player would roll a die, and that would determine how many areas they could move. In one move, Gaius cut off the corn supply to Rome from Africa. On Lucius's go, he rolled low but was able to move three legions to Britain, which implies some kind of group/regroup movement. I doubt they put that much thought into it, but it actually looked like the sort of game I might actually want to play, with the roll-and-move mechanic abstracting the difficulty in motivating men, dealing with weather, supply lines, etc.

That got me thinking: everyone seems to hate roll-and-move, and with good reason, but at the same time there are some games that do something interesting with it. This is a list of such games.

I'm interpreting it fairly broadly: these are games in which one or more dice are rolled, and the result of that die determines where, or to what degree, pieces may be moved.

I'll start it off with one I've only heard of, one I've played, and one I've designed.

As always, feel free to add.

How could I forget one of my favourite games! This adds a bit of resource management in the form of cards which can be used to mitigate die rolls, and a drafting mechanism which adds some strategy to where you stop/block, a fun tactical racer, but a lot of times you just let two dice fly and do the best you can!

EDIT: I forgot, you can also just CHEAT and move as many spaces as you like, just don't get caught by the race judge! (I've never seen anyone cheat when they were in any sort of contention to have their team win)

Probably my favorite roll and move is this one. Rolling two dice and splitting up the roll adds quite a bit more depth than it seems like it should.

Talisman style moving as you move in either direction so you can control the space you land on. This is a pretty cool little auction game though if you have never played it and find it in thrift store you should pick it up.

In this game, you roll dice to determine movement along any of 28 railroad lines. Reach your destination to get paid for the run, then purchase one of the available railroads (which other players must now pay you to use). First player to reach $200K, then declare he/she is heading to his/her home city and reach it without being caught by another player wins!

I found this at a thrift store and picked it up based upon what I read on the geek. Specifically, someone said their 10 year old rates it a "10." I have a son who is 5, and I hope he'll want to play it in the next few years. Reading the rules, makes it look fun for dad too.

You roll three dice, and must use one roll on each of your cars and move the exact number (you start with 3). However, there are obstacles that you must avoid, opponents you can shoot at, and if your car is too far behind it gets eliminated. A little bit of 80's nostalgia helps as well.

Roll and move done right. First of all, the rooms are close enough together that you rarely have turns where you can't do *anything* -- you might not get exactly where you wanted to go, but at least you're not stuck running down a hallway like Clue...

Second, the rolls control when the train moves, which controls when special events take place and when you're able to disembark from the train and send a telegraph for information on a suspect -- and adds a variable ending to the game that adjusts based on the number of players.

Fantastic game. One of my all-time favorite mystery-themed deduction games. I own the Just Games edition, with all expansions. Best of all, it's readily available on eBay for $10, and the expansions are still available directly from the publisher.

Players in Minion Hunter roll dice to move their characters around the career track that circles the board, trying to acquire weapons and items that they will desperately need to survive. The inner section of the board Dark America, fraught with peril, has different movement rules. Very cool game, made even better with the inclusion of the expansion, Minion Nation.

I found this to be a suprisingly fun roll and move that supports many players. It is light and breezy and fits into a very short time frame. Our club frequently uses it to finish off an evening when the 4 player games are concluded.

Another Kramer classic and another winner of the SdJ. This one is about as strategic as a roll and move can get, while still being light and fun. Scales well, with nice components, and pretty thematic. I can't decide if this or That's Life! is my favourite roll and move.

I want to try this again (haven't touched it since childhood), after ripping out all the terrible (and un-intentional) house-rules that made it simply unbearable and take forever.

It seems like it could be quite an interesting auction-based roll-and-move game.

This is a marvellous race game, with movement based purely on dice rolling, but with an interesting twist and a subtle betting system. You can even place "bets" after the race has started, which is actually the point, as it were.

No mention yet of mighty Titan?

Probably the game with the most important choices from a single roll-and-move action. Roll 1d6, and move at least one of and up to all of your legions that distance. Some legions have only one path with a particular roll, other may have a few. Get into the later game when you might have six or seven legions out, and your one die roll turned into a strategic dilemma. The movement symbols aren't as complicated as they seem, but the choices of what to do may be.

(Of course, the good Titan player already knows before his turn what legions get moved where on any given roll, given choices of combat, evasion, recruiting, and developing more optimal roll choices. The game tends to fly by a bit more at that point.)
