This is the new 2011 edition of the Thrift Find of the Week, where the week's 'best' thrift find is chosen, to be honoured by all thrifting Geeks.

We are picking up where our predecessor left off and we would like to publicly thank him for all his fine, hard work on maintaining the Thrift FOTW lists of the past.

The criteria for selection include (but are not limited to):

 - the coolness of the find
 - how often it's thrifted
 - the game rank
 - the game cost
 - the production value
 - the general rarity (i.e. is it out-of-print)
 - whatever other whacked-out reasons the judges decide to use

If you disagree with the judges' decision, please don't hesitate to add your comments, and, as usual, the judges will arbitrarily make their decisions anyway. Also, please subscribe to this list and you'll be notified when there's a new FOTW!

26 DECEMBER 2011 - 1 JANUARY 2012

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Finally, at long last, we have come to the end of the year -- and what a year of thrift finds. Surely, 2011 has been the most amazing year both in terms of quantity and quality of thrifts. This week certainly didn't disappoint.

The spectacular finds came thick and fast this week and there were at least three games that could have won FOTW. Some of what we found included: Wooden Ships & Iron Men for $4; Machiavelli for $4; BattleLore for $4; Tikal for $3; El Grande for 75¢; two copies of Hera and Zeus (one here for $2 and one here for $3); TtR: Europe for $5; two copies of Rail Baron (one here for $3 and one here also for $3); Invasion: Earth for $3; and Medici for $1.

There were two other games which came oh-so-close to winning this week and arguments can easily be made in support of them: schlappy's find of Gunslinger for $3 and Meat's find of Big City for $3. Alas, it was not to be.

To finish off the year, we award the Thrift Find of the Week to a game which is highly unusual on this side of the Atlantic. So unusual, in fact, that it keeps itself hidden amongst the forest shadows. For sheer oddity, rarity, and that intangible "wow factor", we raise a cup of kindness to

for discovering Waldschattenspiel complete for $2. A superb way to end the year.

Now that the year is over, be sure to go the 2011 Thrift Find of the YEAR Geeklist and vote for your favourite. Voting is on right now!
