This is the new 2011 edition of the Thrift Find of the Week, where the week's 'best' thrift find is chosen, to be honoured by all thrifting Geeks.

We are picking up where our predecessor left off and we would like to publicly thank him for all his fine, hard work on maintaining the Thrift FOTW lists of the past.

The criteria for selection include (but are not limited to):

 - the coolness of the find
 - how often it's thrifted
 - the game rank
 - the game cost
 - the production value
 - the general rarity (i.e. is it out-of-print)
 - whatever other whacked-out reasons the judges decide to use

If you disagree with the judges' decision, please don't hesitate to add your comments, and, as usual, the judges will arbitrarily make their decisions anyway. Also, please subscribe to this list and you'll be notified when there's a new FOTW!

4 - 10 JULY 2011
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/69359/item/1739229#ite...

Another great week of thrift finds, packed with all sorts of goodies.

A super hot start saw Talisman, AH Acquire, Roborally, and Tikal on the first page. voynitsky had a great haul of SPI titles with Outreach, Sinai, Sorcerer, Grunt, Russian Civil War 1918-1922, and Peloponnesian War. Of course, the usual euro finds were in the house - San Juan (x2), Lord of the Rings, a sleeved Dominion: Intrigue, a slightly unusual Cities and Knights of Catan, Magna Grecia, and Carcassonne. Also a fantastic find of Magic Realm.

Of course, the early leader for Find of the Week was War of the Ring for a measly $7.50. And it had some fantastic challenges: Evo for $0.39 (Yes, CENTS), Star Wars Epic Duels, Space Alert, YINSH, and Arkadia. But taking home the title of Thrift Find of the Week is a classic (and embarrassing) piece of Americana: Little Black Sambo. Congrats to

11 - 17 JULY 2011

Another week, another thrift list. Not quite as rich as some of the other weeks, but still chock full of great finds. Bacchus' first edition Civilization, with only the Babylonian tokens punched, was a obvious contender for FOTW. There were two great finds of Up Front (here and here), both with the expansion! Pandemic + On the Brink made an appearance (and at half-price!). A sparkling find of Tales of the Arabian Nights and a green box copy of Torres were notable as well, but the find of the week goes to

18 - 24 JULY 2011

Oh my, this was surely one of the finest thrifting weeks of all time. Members of the FOTW Secret Cabal were rather spoiled for choice this week!

Some of the incredible highlights included stinkoman's Goa for $4 (just think about that: Goa was found for $4 and it didn't even make FOTW); SPI War of the Ring for $2; another Dune for $2; AT-43 for $2; Perikles for $5; Panzer Grenadier for $3; Empire Builder for $5; and Troyes for £5!

Here are some of the items that didn't even make the final cut (but do earn an honourable mention): Agricola, ZÈRTZ, Mississippi Queen, Magna Grecia, Vegas Showdown, Clans, Torres, and Empires in Arms.

In the end, however, there was really no doubt as to the winner of the coveted FOTW award (and one GG). He was truly rewarded for nearly hitting a Goodwill employee in the head because, yes,

25 - 31 JULY 2011

This was the week of Heroquest -- an astonishing number of Heroquest finds in all conditions, with expansions, and by themselves. But we're not here to talk about Heroquest, we are here to talk about the Find of the Week!

This week had some great finds. Mystery of the Abbey for $5 represents the Days of Wonder contingent, while Evo for $2 represented the euros well. Of course Dune made an appearance (the Descartes edition, none the less!), and other usual suspects like War of the Ring, Roborally with pewter figures, Civilization, Advanced Civilization, Tikal, Mr. Jack -- the list goes on and on and on...

But the Find of the Week is a late submission from

1 - 7 AUGUST 2011

Once the Secret Cabal saw this week's winner on the thrifting list, it was all over bar the shouting. However, this was another astonishing week of finds. Just look at these finalists:

There was a haul related to The Art of Siege for $10; This Accursed Civil War for $10; and Mystic Skull for $10.

The honourable mentions include PitchCar (plus expansion) and Red Dragon Inn for £2 and £3 respectively; two copies of Formula Dé (here and here) for $2 each; Babel for $1; an SPI War of the Ring for 66¢; Wiz-War for $1; Small World for $3; Dominion for $3; Battle Cry for $3; and Fury of Dracula for $5.

However, when you find the board game that BGG has rated as the #1 game of all time, in-shrink for $3 -- well, the mind boggles. Many, many congratulations to

Compared with recent weeks, this one was a bit of sleeper. It ONLY had such treasures as Attika for $5; Arkham Horror for $4; Puerto Rico for $1; Caesar at Alesia for $1; Dixit for €2.50; Tikal for €2; and El Grande for €3. That's a quiet week for you. whistle

Further honourable mentions should go to Genoa for $5; Rails Through the Rockies for $2; Empire Builder for $6; and Zooloretto for $2.

This week was old school! History of the World ($2), Rail Baron ($2), Dune ($3), an AH Titan ($4), and Civilization ($5) held down the fort for the older finds.

New school was present too, with Battlelore ($3), Struggle of Empires ($5), VOC! Founding the Dutch East Indies Company ($6), Citadels ($1), Zooloretto ($3), Tikal ($2), [listitem=1789869]Princes of Florence[/listitem] ($5), Vinci ($3), and Mexica ($5) showing up.

Euros and Train Games and Ameritrash! Oh my!

This week did not disappoint with numerous highly ranked Euros showing up on the thrifts. Some items are becoming downright commonplace, as there were no less than five copies of Catan and three copies of Knizia's LotR. Certainly not commonplace was Power Grid for $2 (in shrink!?), which showed up with a $1 Zooloretto and set the bar early in the week. Could anything else dethrone it? Descent: Journeys in the Dark for $5 certainly tried, as did a nice find of 1830: Railways & Robber Barons for €1 -- not to mention another Puerto Rico in shrink for $2. Advanced Heroquest, Blue Moon and Winner's Circle rounded out some of the less common finds, and an unpunched Age of Empires III might be the week's most decadent find. But the Thrift Find of the Week goes to

29 AUGUST - 4 SEPTEMBER 2011

Another week of lovely thrift finds to start off September and the winner this week was a bit of a no-brainer.

But before we get to that, let's cover the other stuff. It was definitely a good week for wargames, as there was Thirty Years War: Europe in Agony for a gobsmacking $2, Wings of War: Famous Aces for $2, Memoir '44 for $1, and Battle Cry for 75¢.

Euros were well represented with Nacht der Magier for €4, Battlestar Galactica for £2, Puerto Rico for $2, AND a remarkable Game of Thrones (with the expansion) for only $2.

The trains did not fare well in quantity, but did in quality with a nice C&O/B&O for $1.50.

But it was Ameritrash who came through with the BIG prize, the Thrift Find of the Week, because

5 - 11 SEPTEMBER 2011

This week, the Secret Cabal ninja was all full of warm fuzzies. We were feeling nostalgic and emotional. cry This may have something to do with the 8 pitchers of sangria, but I digress...

By the standards of recent weeks, this was a bit slower than normal -- but certainly not without some fine thrifting discoveries. The first topic of note was the American Civil War: three games of it and none of them the same. There was one here and one here and one here. Remarkable!

Certainly, some of the more unusual finds included Napoleon's Battles (and the 2nd module) for $3; Iliad for €3; and Mission: Red Planet for $3. There were also finds of Battlestar Galactica for $3; Betrayal at House on the Hill for $3; and Citadels (with the expansion) for £2.

This week's winner was an attempt to make up for all times this game has been overlooked in the past. It was hat-tip to that nostalgia I mentioned earlier. It's a grail item for some and a treasure for us all, but this week

Well, well, well. To quote chiron.42 concerning this week's thrift finds: "And thus, the Apocalypse started." We'll see about that in a moment.

I won't lie to you: this week has some tremendous quality, but not much quantity. There was an Age of Mythology for $3; a Rail Baron for $3; and a Race for the Galaxy for $2.

But it isn't often that TWO copies of such a grail game appear in the same week. Honestly, this is the sort of thing that causes drool to spill over many keyboards. First, GameFaery found her copy for $3, but, sadly, it was missing some bits. So this week, the coveted and lofty Thrift Find of the Week is awarded to

19 - 25 SEPTEMBER 2011

This week the Secret Cabal is fudging the numbers and makes no apologies for it. We have taken precious time away from our world domination, Bilderberger-style meetings holiday in Davos this week to come up with an unusual winner. A haul of a certain fantasy battle board game which spanned this week and the following week is being awarded this week (and you'll understand why when you see the following week's winner).

First, let's look at the honourable mentions. Certainly the most unusual find of the week was Yacht Race for 35¢. Civilization is always popular on the TFOTW lists and this week there were THREE copies. Ridiculous.

We also had Small World for $3; Storm Over Arnhem for $2.50; Duel of Ages for $3; Battle Line for $1; and Rail Baron for $4.

However, the truly astonishing Heroscape haul that

26 SEPTEMBER - 2 OCTOBER 2011

Well, as mentioned above, the Heroscape haul-of-ages continued into this week, but was awarded last week. Why? Because the games this week were officially described by Sir Kenneth Clark as "phat" and "dope".

Ahem. Moving right along...

It was such a quality week this week, so many yummy items. We had the Euros in force with Puerto Rico for $2; Tigris & Euphrates for $4; Dixit for £2.50; Java for $3; and Dominion for $3.

The wargames had their day with Battle Cry for $2.50; the quite rare Fifth Frontier War for $2; and the even more absurdly rare Field Command for $1. Amazing.

The winner of Thrifty Find of the Week has found a singular gem. Singular, of course, because its BGG board game ID number is "1". The Secret Cabal was truly awed by this one. Congratulations to

Oh, the stress and strain of it all! When there are so many good items from which to choose, what's a Secret Cabal to do?

Indeed, the selection was delectable. We hadn't seen Fortress America on the lists for a little while and there were two this week: here and here, both at $3 apiece. Yet again, we found a copy of Rail Baron for $5. Always very nice.

It was a real struggle settling on a winner this week. We had some terrific finalists, most notably RoboRally for $4; Evo for $1 (!!!); and Struggle of Empires for $5 wow.

In the end, our winner of the Thrift Find of the Week managed to nab -- in one trip -- Carcassonne and RoboRally and, most notably of all,

Special note: This seems like a good time to remind everyone who follows this list that I (Juxtatype) am not the only member of the TFOTW Secret Cabal -- this is not a one-man group. I am merely the public face, the press secretary, the Cabal's Minister of Information, if you will. Please bear this in mind, as you read on.

We would all happily take a copy of eveything mentioned here this week, such is the fine quality of the thrifts on offer. After a few sketchy weeks, the quality has returned in force. If the term was still in use, we could say that the whole week was "smothered in gravy".

The first item of mention is Chess. Chess, you say? Isn't that a bit banal for the Cabal? Well, yes, normally chess wouldn't even register a blip on our scans, but, in this case, a big shout-out goes to scoutmom for paying $5 to save an incredible set -- see it here.

The Euros made their presence felt with the following finds: Dominion for $3; Vikings for €7; Formula Dé for $2; an English-language Expedition for $2; Pandemic for $2; and Settlers of the Stone Age for $1.67. A very nice assortment.

Moving on, and the wargames this week really stormed the beaches. First up, there was Wings of War: Famous Aces for $1; World in Flames for $4; Battle Cry for $1; Field Command for $1.50; and -- most rare of all -- Code of Bushido for $6. Anyone of those wargames could have won the whole shebang this week.

In the end, the winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week was rewarded for having found two of the aforementioned games in addition to the spectacular find which sealed the deal. Your present interlocutor

This week is the "Noah's Ark" version of the Thrift Find of the Week. A reading from the Book of Genesis:

And of board games clean and unclean, and of every thrifty find that moveth upon the earth, two and two went in to Noah into the ark, Euro and Ameritrash, as the Lord had commanded Noah. And after the seven days were passed, the waters of the flood overflowed Goodwill and Value Village.

What on earth is going on? Read on. The most appropriate game is first.

Two copies of Zooloretto: one here for €1 and one here for $2.
Two copies of Rail Baron: one here for $2 and one here for $3.
Two copies of Puerto Rico: one here for $5 and one here for $5.
Two copies of Torres: one here for $2 and one here for $1.
Two copies of Ticket to Ride: one here for 49¢ and one here (Märklin) for 49¢.

Alright, alright, that was kind of remarkable, but there were some singles too. How about Mystic Skull: The Game of Voodoo for $2; Medici for $3; Ca$h 'n Gun$ for $3; The Pillars of the Earth for $4; and Chinatown for €5.

In the end, it was a game from the top 5 which made it to the top of the pile. It was a great grab by

to find Power Grid for $2. Nice. Very nice.

And God said to Noah: This shall be the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all thrifters of board games upon the earth.

Amen.

24 - 30 OCTOBER 2011

This week we get a visit from the Ghosts of Winners Past. Yes, several previous winners of the Thrifty Find of the Week award made their re-appearance this week. Clearly, they want another kick at the can. Who are these past winners?

First, Pandemic for $2.
Second, Dark Tower for $5.
Third, Advanced Heroquest for £3.
Fourth, Puerto Rico, here for $2 and here for $1.
Fifth, RoboRally for $4.

There are also some extraordinary games trying to make it for their first victory. There was Tikal for $3; Caesar's Legions for $3; Witch's Brew for $1; Terra Nova for $3; Assyria for $4; and Imperium for $2.

Frankly, any of the previous winners listed above could have won again. In the end, it was a thin piece of plastic and one man's hard work that made the difference (not to mention the fact that DT and AH have won so often). Yet another previous winner has won this week, as a dream came true for

31 OCTOBER - 6 NOVEMBER 2011

What a week of monster finds! Absolutely amazing!

First off, we have made no secret of our fondness for Raiko (aka binraix) and it would seem that we are not alone here on BGG. He is being mentioned right at the start because he found a game that would normally win this week, hands-down. But, by his own testimony, he acquired his amazing copy of Merchant of Venus for free and, unfortunately, free items are exempt from winning. He does, however, gain an honourable mention because it's Raiko, for goodness' sake!

Other games which came so near to winning and yet didn't quite make it are El Grande for $3.50; Trireme for $4; Empires of the Middle Ages for $2; THAT version of Acquire for $3; an unpunched Civilization for $1; and two new copies of Tempus for $2.44 each (one in English here and one in German here).

That incredible list makes the following finds seem nearly pedestrian by comparison: RoboRally (and three expansions) for $12; Zooloretto for $4; Ca$h 'n Gun$ for $1.50; Wasabi! for $3; TtR: Europe for $3; Dominion: Intrigue for $2; and Pueblo for $5.

It was, as mentioned at the start, a week for monster games. And the winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week is definitely that and more. A previous winner of this trophy decided that he wanted more. We congratulate

7 - 13 NOVEMBER 2011

This week, we pay homage to our outgoing King of Thrifters, with all of the Ameritrash standing at full attention.

This was yet another week where the great discoveries just kept going and going...

Let's take a look! Wargames had a slow week, with only two honourable finds to be mentioned: Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815 for $1 and Burma for $3. Of course, Burma was only mentioned here because I panicked.

There were also notable finds of Tikal for $2; Modern Art for $4; Tales of the Arabian Nights for $5; Wyatt Earp for £1; High Society for $2; an old Betrayal at House on the Hill for $3; Rail Baron for $4; Race for the Galaxy for $2; RoboRally for $2; Puerto Rico for $4; Small World for $2; Power Grid for 77¢; Before the Wind for $2; and two copies of Cosmic Encounter -- an original one here for $3 and a newer one here for $2.

Holy moley! The Secret Cabal is out of breath just from looking at that list! And the cigars.

And now the cavalcade of Ameritrash begins. We would be remiss if we didn't list the incredible find of FIVE in-shrink copies of HeroQuest. Although not at a really thrifty price, they are definitely worthy of mention.

However, this week's winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week is a man known to us all. He found an Ameritrashy haul for the ages. His Previous Majesty

14 - 20 NOVEMBER 2011

As the year 2011 draws to a close, the quality of the thrifted board games never ceases to amaze the Secret Cabal. We thank everyone for their contributions and hope that the great finds continue. It is a pleasure to mention them here.

This week, the domination of Ameritrash continues unabated. There were lots of Euros, wargames, etc., but the Trash of America has risen to the top once again.

We are agog in reporting the following finds -- just look how long this list is: two copies of Elfenland, one here and one here, each for $4; Rail Baron for $2; Modern Art for $1; Forbidden Island for $2; Thurn & Taxis for €3; Stalingrad for $1; RoboRally for $2; Tikal for $3; Duel of Ages for $6; THAT version of Acquire for $3; Arkham Horror for $5; Civilization for $4; Zooloretto for $3; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $2; Alexandros for $4; and, finally, a double find of Cuba and Tikal for $2.67 each.

BUT...

we return to Ameritrash. This find is mindblowing. If you're a fan, you will weep over this one. One of our regulars,

Stop! For the love of everything holy, please stop! You thrifters are making life so hard for a certain Secret Cabal. We are truly bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by having to choose one game to win this week.

There were some multiples. For example, three copies of Roborally: one here for $1; one here for $5; and one here for $1. Then there were two copies of Civilization: one here for $3; and one here for £1.50. Finally, there were two copies of Dominion: one here for $6.50 and one here in shrink for $3.

What about expanding expansions? Well, that category was duly covered by Arkham Horror for $4, because there was also the Dunwich Horror expansion, Curse of the Dark Pharaoh expansion, and the King in Yellow expansion -- all for a further $6.

Also of note: Formula Dé for $3; Metropolis for $2.50; Silverton for $2; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich and Pacific War for $8 each; and El Caballero for $1.

But when we were presented with the finalists (the aforementioned in-shrink Dominion; an in-shrink Titan for $3; StarCraft: The Board Game for $3; 1830: Railways & Robber Barons for $2.50; Cosmic Encounter for $1; and Railroad Tycoon for $2), what on earth were we to do? What choice could we make?

The answer is that we chose the last on that list. As far as we can tell, this game has never been on the thrift lists at a thrifty price. So, a huge congratulations to

28 NOVEMBER - 4 DECEMBER 2011

Welcome to the month of December -- the month of incredible hauls, apparently. Shall we all sing "deck the hauls with boughs of hauly"?

Yet another week of crazy finds. The haul for this week was nearly a winner all on its own. How about Civilization, Titan, The Republic of Rome, Starship Troopers, and The Siege of Jerusalem for $4 each? I've said "jiminy jillikers" so many times that the words have lost all meaning!

Anyway...

The grognards had a very fine week, with Beyond Valor for $1; Pacific War for $5; Battle Cry for $4; Memoir '44 for $4; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $4; Pax Britannica for $1; and Ironclads for 50¢.

The trains also did very well with an ancient find of Across the Continent for $2; then we had Chicago Express for $3; and Eurorails for $2.

Euros are never without stupendous discoveries. This week they produced The Pillars of the Earth for $3; Pandemic for $5; two copies of Citadels, one here and one here, each for $1; two copies of Zooloretto, one here for $1.50 and one here for $4; and, finally, Carcassonne: The Discovery and Carcassonne: The City for $2 total.

Also very worthy of note were two copies of Cosmic Encounter, here for $2 and here for $1.

This week's winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week award is a game that has destroyed countless keyboards with copious amounts of drool. We honour and congratulate

5 - 11 DECEMBER 2011

Few will be pleased with the results this week, but that's too bad because we've gone all nostalgic again. cry Yes, eight more pitchers of sangria. shake

This was a quiet week compared with the last few, but there are still some lovely finds. There was Arena: Roma II for $2; two copies of Power Grid (here and here) for $3 each; Rail Baron for $5; San Marco for $4; Terra Nova for $2; The Pillars of the Earth for $3; War! Age of Imperialism for $4; Mexica for €4.50; Rise and Decline of the Third Reich for $3; RoboRally for $3; two copies of Dune (here and here) for $2 each; and Tikal for $3.

Crying in our sangria, we remember, with great fondness, the Lovecraft of our youth [insert your own joke here]. This week's winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week is a classic and goes to a man whose enormous collection of games just got a bit better. Hats off (and bottoms up) to

12 - 18 DECEMBER 2011

Not a long list this week, but, boy, it's a good one. The year is nearly done and then your friendly neighbourhood Secret Cabal can begin work in earnest on 2012. But, one step at a time.

This week came flying out of the gates with a game that very nearly won, but was just pipped at the post: namely Dreadfleet, in shrink, for $8. That's quite a find, no doubt about it.

We also had discoveries of Modern Art for $2; Pandemic for $4; Battlestar Galactica for £5; Leonardo da Vinci in shrink for $3; Small World for $1; Kingdoms for $2; El Grande for $3; that version of Acquire for $3; Web of Power for $5; Wyatt Earp for $2; The Pillars of the Earth for €2.50; and RoboRally for $1. What a terrific list!

This week's winner got more than he bargained for, inasmuch as he couldn't figure out why the game had more stuff than it should. It was left to our previous King of Thrifters to explain to

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the thrifts are so delightful.

This could be the most anti-climactic winner of the year. As this was the week before Christmas, the quantity was down but -- oh boy -- were there some hauls. We did say that this was the month of hauls.

Haul #1 came from Craigslist and consisted of 47 games at $5 apiece. Some of the highlights from this haul included Empire Builder, Aliens, and Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit. Quite frankly, any other week of the year this haul would have won, but this was not a normal week. Holy moley.

Haul #2 came from BGG itself and consisted of 232 games for $11.15 each. Not so thrifty, but the sheer size of this haul makes it worthy of mention. Highlights from this haul are extensive and include A Few Acres of Snow, Age of Steam, Twilight Struggle, Commands & Colors: Ancients, and the Alhambra: Big Box. Wow.

Some non-haul, regular thrifting finds this week were Torres for $2; Pandemic for $2; Britannia for $2; Formula Dé for $5; and Dominion for $3.

I'm afraid that this week's winner of the Thrifty Find of the Week was already decided by the time that page 6 of the thrifting list was complete. The rarest of the rare, priciest of the pricey, the grailest of the grails was found! Congratulations, bravo, hooray, applause, acclaim (and all the rest) go to
