A Friday evening of Summoner Wars for me. Had a friend over and we played 3 games. Got to try some new factions from the Master Set and expansions I'd picked up a month or so ago. My session report is here.

I also played a quick game of Dragonheart with my daughter for the first time in several months. She was rusty with the strategy (such as it is, but she's only 7) and I trounced her. We plan to play again this weekend.

My son and I played a few rounds of Snail's Pace Race. He'll be three in December, and he's gotten to the point where he can reliably roll his dice and move the correct snails the correct number of spaces.

When I asked him shortly into the first game who he thought would win (in this game, you select a snail that you think will win the race), he said 'me and you.' Which was pretty priceless

Thursday is technically not the weekend but it was such a good night i have to include it. I set up a euchre night with my wife, sister and her husband. After the first game of euchre my sister asked what if we play that other game? you know ticket to ride. Before she could finish i already went and had it out.

My brother in law had never played any modern boardgame yet. He enjoyed ticket to ride so then we played Carcassonne, he enjoyed that so then we played Blokus. If it hadn't been for work the next day we would have played the dwarf king. They all had fun and wanted to do it again soon. I think i'm 10 for 10 as far as ticket to ride and carcassonne go with my family and friends.

Friday I went over to a friends how's and we got in:

3 games of Hive
2 games of Blokus
1 game of carcassonne

Saturday was not a good day. in short my dad had one of his barns (containing all his farm equipment) and his woodworking shop destroyed in a fire

Sunday i just got in two games of Warhammer invasion with my brother and finished the night off at a friends house with carcassonne

We played Citadels in the first session of our work's fledgling gaming group. We were going to play Texas Hold'em but only four people showed so we switched to everyone's favorite gateway game. Two of my coworkers got in a "You destroyed my building? I'll kill your guy!" type dynamic, always fun to see friendly coworkers go cut-throat.

In our homebrew Scifi game we followed up on several clues and followed a fatal clue to a self-help group for paranoiacs and conspiracy freaks (we fitted right in), which turned out to be a trap set by our ex-parasite plant nemesis. Curses!

Games, games and more games!
mbmbmbmbmb

Saturday:

I spent the day at my parent's house, and my 4 year old son wanted to play some of his favourite games there with his grandad and me, so we pulled out The Great Game of Britain, The Game of Life and UNO - his current top three, and played through them.

Then in the evening, my husband and I tried out our new copy of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization, just the simple game as it was new to me and my husband had only played once before. Enjoyed it (and have since played an advanced game and loved it even more!). I can see this being a good acquisition, and can see why it's so high in the rankings!

That finished with time to spare, as it was only the short version, so after that we played another of our new purchases, Quarriors!, which we'd played twice on Friday, but kept spotting wrong rules. I think we finally have got the rules correct now, and I also think we've found another new filler/end of evening game to replace, or at least compete with, Ascension, which we've been playing rather a lot the last few months!

Sunday:

This time it was my husband's parents we visited, and they'd bought two new games - Connect Four, a Toy Story themed version and Snakes and Ladders, a Disney themed version. I tried to teach my 6 year old daughter the rules for Connect 4, and she was getting the idea, but my nearly 2 year old was creating too much of a randomising factor by putting pieces in, and so in the end I left the two of them happily posting pieces in the board, and making pretty patterns - and my other son had a turn later too! Then while waiting for tea to be ready we managed to convince the older two to play Snakes and Ladders. It was an amazingly short board - only 49 spaces - and with both of them landing on long snakes early on, it only took about 5 turns each to finish - and that was with landing exactly too!! Not like the Snakes and Ladders copy I own! They weren't that impressed with it as a game though, preferring to play spot the character on the board!

celebrated their birthdays and we celebrated with them. I discussed my new 7th Sea campaign with the players, and afterwards we played What Were You Thinking? and I've Never... The Outrageous Game of Truth. Played that last one until our toddler woke up. Had been a long time since my last night without any sleep. I'm not twenty anymore!

On Saturday, there was little gaming as we recuperated from the previous night. I got in someNo Peace Without Spain, and

and I played some L5R (2x same decks, my Toturi's Army HonourThroughDishonour deck against her Dragon HonourThroughDuels deck). Two cool games, first one was a clear win for TA - Seppun Toshiken proved hard to defeat for her, the second one seemed a clear win until the TA deck stalled on 36 honour & 1 province and her Dragon deck gained 20 honour in two turns.

On Sunday, we played a 2-player game of Dungeon Petz and I continued my NPWS solo game, which is more and more looking like an Alliance trashing. Louis XIV will not wait until he conquers ALL!

On tuesday I played a game of NPWS with

My son and I set up Mission 2 of SH 3rd Edition and had at it. I was the Colonial Marines (er, I mean "Space Marines") both times and he was the Aliens (er, I mean "Genestealers"). He beat me both times, though the second play was much closer. Great theme, great tension, and great eye candy with this game - we need to play it more often, for sure.

Friday lunch game:

Played a 3er of Yspahan. 2 new players (they both only played once before). I won, but it was a much closer game than the first time we played. Yspahan is a great lunch game. Quick, yet deep enough to scratch the gaming itch at lunch time.

Saturday at home:

Played Letters from Whitechapel with my wife. This was our 3rd time playing and my first time playing as the detectives. I arrested Jack on the 3rd night. Fun game!

Sunday at home:

Played a game of Ingenious with my wife and a game of Thunderstone with my son. Thunderstone was a blast. Some cards I hadn't played with before showed up in this game and there were some pretty wicked combos. First time we played with the cyclone spell that gives magic attack, plus additional magic attack for a wizard or cleric (equal to the hero's level), plus we had the wizard (forget the name) that gives bonus magic attack for each spell played. There were two other spells in the game as well. Having a hand with a few of those wizards (especially level 2 and 3) plus a couple cyclones and some other spells made for some huge attacks. The village cards seemed very weak in the beginning. We spent alot of time just going to the village and building our decks. Then we hit a point where we were just going to the dungeon every turn and slaying monsters left and right. By the time the guardian came out, he was easy to kill. At one point I had more than a dozen XP just sitting there, so, I decided to go to the village just to level up some heroes, even though I could've easily scored some points at the dungeon. It was a very close game. I won by 2 points. We called it a tie since my son is only 7 years old.

for letting me stay at his place this weekend.

We started off Friday with 1844: Switzerland which was new to me. We messed up a couple of rules that would have effected the game, and it was still an interesting variant. This is an 18xx "monster" with a very big map and lots of companies. I eked out a 2nd place finish, although I wasn't close to 1st. Its worth another play. In the evening we played a very quick game of 1889 (under 3 hours). I taught the game (not that there was much to teach to experienced 18xx players) so, of course, I came in dead last.

Saturday we started out with 1880: China. This game was incredible. We all loved the game, despite putting in at least 7 hours including rules explanations. We had a few rules questions, and overall things went smoothly, although learning the new systems really made this challenging. I didn't do well in this one, finishing last or next to last, and still really enjoyed it and want to play it again soon. Next up was a 5 player game of 18EU, which I won although not by as much as I expected (I made a poor choice in a late token lay that cost me a bunch of money). My money was made mostly from a 2-12 combo railroad and then starting a railroad in Paris late (the 1 died on the vine and the 3 only got merged at the last minute).

We wrapped up the evening with 2 quick games of Crokinole and 1 of High Society. Both titles were fun and all 3 games took maybe 45 minutes total.

On Sunday I came home and rested, only playing a bit of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten on the PS3. Another great gaming weekend!

Friday:
In the morning Lindy (yes, she is home for the weekend yet again!) announced that she would learn all my new birthday games as a belated birthday present. I was pumped. We started with Bridgetown Races, a game set in Portland, Oregon, in which you have to grab flags off of 8 different bridges using different means of transportation. It is one I thought long and hard about getting. We tied this first game and I was left wondering if it wouldn't end up as a tie too often. We then learned Jaipur. I had already realized that this was going to be an excellent game from reading the rules. It did not disappoint. It felt very elegant in its play. We immediately played again. Lindy won both.

Aaron came over for some games in the afternoon. We played 3 of my new birthday games and one of his. The Mississippi Queen I had played before and acquired second hand here on the geek with birthday money. The next one was Aaron's copy of Turbo Taxi. Lindy owns this game as well so I have played a number of times. Poor Aaron! I got 11 of the 12 tokens. His response: "enough humilitaion for one day!" Lindy and I then taught him Bridgetown Races. Again we ended in a 3-way tie. Now I was worried! (But see tomorrow's entry.) Lastly, Aaron and I learned Biblios. I really liked this game; well, we both did and would have played again immediately if Aaron had not had to go.

Saturday:
I did some closer looking on the forums and found out a few things more about Bridgetown Races. THe most important thing was a method of breaking ties. This, along with the fact that it did not sound like other players where having the problem of games constantly ended in ties made me badly want to try again. Lindy and I put it on the table, and this time, I won with 2 flags more than her. So it can be done! Then I taught her Biblios. She lost the first game and wanted to try again. Unfortunately she lost again. But she is taken with the game so we will be playing again.

Sunday:
More repeats of the birthday games with Lindy. I taught her The Mississippi Queen which we ended up playing 2 times during the day, Jaipur, which we played once, this time with me winning, and Biblios we played once. This time Lindy squeaked in the victory by 2 points so she was quite pleased.

14 games played.

Duck Dealer

I recently acquired a copy of Cannes and it has started me on a Splotter kick (Duck Dealer on Sunday, Antiquity last night, Roads and Boats sometime this coming weekend). Cannes is unjustly underrated in my view. It has all the Splotter hallmarks (3 levels of goods conversion, network building/logistics as focus), but adds in tile laying, so it is the only Splotter game (I know of) where the map is formed incrementally. This, coupled with the very limited nature of your personal network (only 5 links), and the abbreviated playing time, makes for a very good game indeed, and one that scratches the Splotter itch when there are not a few hours to devote to the proceedings.

Our play of Duck Dealer on Sunday was only our 3rd, but we've enjoyed each play more and more. The push-your-luck element of the disk accumulation and the presence of "privileges" (the ability to do as many conversions as you'd like at any particular factory/mine) are the main elaborations to the standard stuff in this one. There's also a nice little cube-management aspect to the game, as your cubes have to be used to track turns taken, but also get used to shorten delivery routes (the intergalactic highway) and claim privileges; by the end of the game, you'll likely need to be pulling from one area to put them somewhere else, which adds to the tension. Again, I don't understand the bad rep on this one. There is downtime, but we still enjoy it much more than MoV (which is fun, but also has downtime issues).

Another slow weekend of gaming. Just me and my parents on Sunday. We played a game of Ticket to Ride on the Switzerland map. It was my parents first time playing that map and it was pretty close. We were all 15 points from each other, with my mom winning.

Then we played a game of Castle Panic. This game is a little bit harder with 3 people since you have less to trade with. We have beaten the standard game before, so we decided to use the 'monster recycling program' variant. If a monster dies, and we didn't kill it (like from a boulder or destroying a wall/tower) it gets placed back in the pile to be drawn again in the future. Even with the Feather Promo bookmark, we lost this one. We had only a single monster left to kill, but he got in the castle ring and had enough health to eventually destroy our last two towers.

Despite our best attempts to have friends over, we came up empty - everyone was either out of town or sick. So my partner and I had a gamefest just the two of us. And I lost EVERY SINGLE GAME. I'd be more heartbroken if I wasn't so happy we at least got to play games! Our list for the weekend was:

10 Days in the Americas (twice)
Arkadia
Genji (new to us)
Dragonheart
London

Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan- One of my new favorites. I taught a new player this one. I played Yellow and won but we both enjoyed the uncertainty of battle in this one.

Popular Front- Played a six player game of this one. At times it moved a little slow for my liking and I think defenses may be a little to strong but I would definately play it again.

Commands & Colors: Ancients-It was good to get this one to the table again. We played the Zama scenario. I was the Romans and romped for an 8 to 1 banner victory.

Infinite City- We played this one twice. I enjoy this beer and pretzel game. there is enough going on to keep your attention and make some decisions vey difficult.

Friday - We had a full 10 hour session of D&D. Make it to level 3 with our new characters. 2 out of 5 of us died in a particularly nasty encounter.

Saturday - cracked out Runebound (Second Edition) for a cool 4 player game. My wife won by defeating 3 Dragon Lords. She seems to play cautious enough not to get defeated and take enough risks that she stays near the front of the pack in our race to win.

We also played 4 rounds of 7 Wonders with each of the 4 players winning 1 game. Some games had all players within 1 point of each other, the winner with a 1 point lead. Everyone seems to continue to enjoy this one when it hits the table.

Sunday - I played Star Wars: The Old Republic in the beta. & thumbsupthumbsup

On Saturday afternoon I played a 3-player game of Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) with both expansions. I prefer the smaller player count over the big 6 and 7 player games I'd played before, but successive plays are dropping the rating for me. After my first game I was completely wowed and rated it a 10. By my third game (in as many months, possibly just too many too soon for me), I've knocked it down to a 7. It's a fine game, but all the variability in the different races and cards and map layouts just doesn't really change the experience for me from game to game. One of the players in my group, who has played the game somewhere in the triple digits number of times, says he loves that the game is different every time. I guess I just don't see it. I might have just overloaded, though. Perhaps I'll play it again in 6 months and come back raving. In the meantime, I'll consider it a game to play every few months instead of monthly.

That evening my wife and I played a game of Ticket to Ride: Europe with our first play of Ticket to Ride: Europa 1912. The expansion was pretty good. I liked the new cards. The warehouse/depot thing was fine. I'll probably play some games with and some games without it.

Most of my gaming time this weekend was with video games. I'm about 15 hours into The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim now and I'm a couple worlds into Super Mario 3D Land. I wish I could report about my wife and I playing through the first world of Rayman Origins, but that was on Tuesday. It was really fun! Oops, that was a report, wasn't it ninja

So many awesome new video games. And more are coming! Yeesh.

Mostly light games for me this weekend.

Our friends Geoff and Leah were over for dinner Saturday night and we played a fun game of Time's Up!. We'd played the Title Recall version not too long ago, but my wife particularly had trouble with the names of people on the cards of this version - quite a few are American-centric and we lack that background, having grown up in the UK. (We did play it once before and no one could believe we couldn't get Martha Washington.)

Geoff left us his copy of Category 5 (aka 6 Nimmt!) and we tried it out 2 player with the limited cards variant (just 24 card deck, so every card is always in play). First time (late at night) we played it wrong - apparently it is supposed to be simultaneous not sequential. So we slept on it and played again. Managed to play it wrong again next day due to some confusing text in the rules.

We've since played it 5 player with the full deck and it was chaotic and occasionally funny seeing someone else take a bunch of point-heavy cards. But it was pretty random (2 players played one round playing randomly and got their best scores of the game!).

The only other game of the weekend was Race for the Galaxy, which is short and familiar enough that it is almost a ligth game too. My wife's Galactic Scavengers put together a beautiful diversified economy tableau, but it suffered from being a beat behind my Earth's Lost Colony development rush and she was thoroughly displeased with me for winning. gulp

Only one game this weekend

Wife picked this out - we don't normally play it. This was actually the first time I played it with more than 2 players. It was much more fun than I remembered and we have played it a couple more times since then. So here's to a "resurrecting an old game" weekend!

Got in a 6 player game of this.

It was a bit hectic with 6, but man this is still a great game. If you have never played, I would give this at least a try.

All 6 players had a blast playing.
