WBC is the best tournaments for the Block Games that use that design for war games. Block games drew 170+ gamers in six tourneys for an average of 25+ for each tournament. We also have a mini-con....the BPA Block Party that is a month away!

1. Board Game: Hammer of the Scots [Average Rating:7.78 Overall Rank:45]

Hammer of the Scots is arguably the best of the genre. This game simulates the Scottish rebellions of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The game draws some of the best gamers....Reiff, Barcafer, Young and Seary just to name a few! (Friday Morning)

I've three curiosities:
1) are roles assigned randomly or do you bid to get England or Scotland? if so, WHAT do you bid? years of "Edward not appearing" for the English and what for the Scots?
2) do you play the Braveheart scenario or the Bruce scenario or the whole campaign?
3) do you use any of the optional rules presented in the second version of the rules?
Thanks for the answers (and have fun!). :)

1) You bid to play the English. Years without Edward I and if both players want the Scots then its a random.

2) Braveheart scenario

3) We have not played any of the optionals.

Hope that you can make it to WBC or Block Party.
2. Board Game: Liberty [Average Rating:7.43 Overall Rank:505]

The game of the American Revolution. This tourney was the top vote winner in 2004. It has a good following as well. Liberty is a popular game that simulates the roll of naval forces and the importance of the West Indes. Reiff is the current champ, so the road leads through the big guy! (Thursday afternoon)

Are the game parameters for the tournament set, yet, such as scenario and side bids? I ahve the same question for all five games, actually, but you already answered it for Hammer.

Yes, the tournament is set. We bid VP's to be the US. If a player bids two then the Brits win at 28 VP's instead of 30. We are not using variants this year as most people like the game as it plays from the box. Make sure that you have the most recent rules and come for a great time!
3. Board Game: Europe Engulfed [Average Rating:7.85 Overall Rank:98]

The new guy on the block. Rick Young & Jesse Evans has created one of the best games on ETO of WWII. It drew well for its first year and with the advent of iEE the tourney should top 30+ this year. (Friday Evening)
4. Board Game: War of 1812 [Average Rating:7.06 Overall Rank:627]

This game is 30 years old and still draws well. Last year we drew 35 players for the '04 tourney. David Metzger is the best player in 1812(and a true gentleman), though he was upset last year by Matt Calkins (arguably the second best player according to AREA ratings). We have a lot of fun and the commraderie is terrific. (Tuesday evening)

One of my all time favorites! A great game in which to invest some free time.
5. Board Game: Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815 [Average Rating:7.31 Overall Rank:303]

The game that began it all! The tourney has been down on attendance, but it has a faithful following. The Cornetts have dominated the game for the past several years. (Wednesday Evening)
6. Board Game: Crusader Rex [Average Rating:7.44 Overall Rank:237]

It will be published this summer and sponsored by Columbia Games. Designed by the man who brought you Hammer.
7. Board Game: Hellenes: The Peloponnesian War [Average Rating:7.92 Unranked]

This game is more like the Card driven games like For the People. I believe that each card has the choice of Ops or an event. I am looking forward to this game as well as Crusader. Jerry Taylor is supposed to be at Block Party with a Playtest copy of Crusader, maybe someone will bring Hellas.

I believe the rules for this game should closely mirror those of Hammer with the card aspect being enhanced with the different abilities of the cards rather than just using them for initiative. Everything I have heard says this is a modified Hammer set in the eastern Mediteranian. Should be a great game.
8. Board Game: Rommel in the Desert [Average Rating:7.71 Overall Rank:173]

Rommel, Hellas and Crusader may be there in open gaming. We did not come up with a GM for Rommel, so it won't be a tourney.

Great list. I'm a big fan of block games. Nice to hear Liberty is popular with your group. I love the theme but some comments here on the geek had made me hesitate. BTW, when and where is WBC and your mini-con?

The WBC (i.e. World Boardgaming Championoships) will be held in Lancaster, PA on August 2-7, 2005, with several events held the weekened before in pre-cons.

I agree the name is a bit presumptuous, but we do get players from as far away as Turkey. The event draws 1000-1200 gamers every year.

There's over 100 tournaments in games from ASL to Slapshot. Although some events are very serious, newbies are encouraged to try out many of the events. Many have events have demos for teaching the rules and the heats in multi-heat events (which include most German-style games) are not played as seriously. And the late night events are deliberately silly: Elchfest Greed$, Slapshot :D

And if you don't find a tournament to your liking, there's a lot of open gaming around. Some people don't play a tournament all week.

You may not win a lot (In fact, there were two years when I don't think I won a single game all week.--I've gotten better!) But it is best time I have gaming all year.
The level of competition is very high and I find the level of sportsmanship as high or higher.

The BPA Block Party will be May 13-15 in Columbus, OH.

Block Party is in Columbus, Ohio May 13-15th. We will have tourneys in Hammer of the Scots, Liberty, War of 1812 & Europe Engulfed. We had 33 last year and hope for 40+ this year. Tourneys are Swiss so you can play in as many rounds as you want.

There is a lot of Open Gaming as well, last year Atlantic Storm, Age of Napoleon, Liars Dice, Clash of Giants, Puerto Rico and Union Pacific were played to name a few of the games that I saw in open gaming.

I believe that I have an open game of Game of Thrones scheduled.

If you get a chance come to Block Party and learn some new games and just have a blast!
Dangit! Suspended Again

I heartily recommend throwing the blocks at Bruce Reiff, if you find yourself on the losing side of a game with him. He deserves it, and, some have said, he likes it. Try to avoid the eyes, though.

No Rommel in the Desert??? :(

Rick,

We could not come up with a GM for a Rommel Tourney. We wanted to have it as a tourney. It will be there in open gaming like Hellas and Crusader.:D
