So I'm not at BGG CON (someone has to stay home to feed the ponies). But that doesn't have to stop me from keeping my ear close to the ground! Here's the list of the winners of the 2011 Golden Geek Awards.

Note that Dominant Species, 7 Wonders, and A Few Acres of Snow were winners in multiple categories!

So what do we think of the results? As expected? Or some surprises? Let's discuss!

I'm in the minority here, I didn't care for this game. I was actually quite disappointed with it as I had really looked forward to playing it and almost purchased it blind several times. I played in a beginner game at a con and it seemed like everyone just kept repeating their same moves every other turn. We had a full table and 2 others were of the same opinion. It's not a *bad* game, just not for me.

Nice choice (I would have been in doubt between this and Troyes). I would advise you play it at least twice before deciding if you do not like it. You will play poor strategy the first time. I like it that companies dare to bring out games that require some time-investment in these quickandeasy-times.

Oh, and speaking of Dominant Species winning GOTY, I'm running a little GeekGold mini-contest to see who can guess how high DS will climb in the ranks, and when something will pass it.

Really would have liked to see Troyes win this category. I think Troyes has a unique combination of mechanics that makes the dicefest into a fairly non-random strategy brain burner.

I would have liked to have seen Troyes place in "Best Innovative Game", but I'm happy to see DS win here (and GOTY).

I'm still not convinced this is truly a "family" game. It's simple for gamers, but in my couple of experiences teaching it to non-gamers, they've had some difficulty grasping the game play as its so different from anything they've played (including one session with junior highers, where one out of the 5 grasped it and liked it...the others really didn't like it at all).

Heh...I wonder how 7 Wonders is considered a family game, since it's not until the game is done and you look up do you realize you've been playing a game with other people in your family.

(I keed, I keed. 7 Wonders is harmless, fluffy fun. Playing it is like eating a Tootsie Roll--okay and vaguely chocolate-like while you eat it, but you've forgotten the experience ten minutes later.)

Not liking it, I understand, but not grasping it??? We have been playing this twice a week for the past two months. Sometimes four players with the wife, more often three players with my two boys, 8 and 11. I am competitive, and a pretty good strategist, but I don't win all the time. So yes, kids get it, believe me. Eldest even tried the science strategy on his own and won.
Now it starts being repetitive, replay value is so so. Maybe the extension will help...

They weren't able to really grasp it...in fact they wound up bailing after the second age. I'm sure I could have done a poor job explaining it, but these were also boys who had not played Euro style games before either.

For me, it is a game for 3 to 4 players! Ok, for 2 players also work with the Free City, but three real players is better.

More than 4, I believe the game is lackluster.

Regards,

The more the merrier. With seven, you aren't going to get any of those good cards you passed on in round one.

Seven Wonders is a deserving winner, but I would have like to see London win in this category.

Exactly. Both Chess and Paris Connection are abstracts with a theme.

But the main problem, as I've said a few times recently elsewhere is that the term 'abstract' means very different things to different people. This game winning this award highlights some of the differences.

Of course abstract means very different things to different people, just like the wargames, euros and ameritrash.

I'll try to rephrase it: "Paris Connection is as abstract as Crows. It has as much to do with trains as Crows, with crows. It has a theme, but it's not thematic".

As abstract as chess.

Actually, I think most people have a pretty good idea with what's a wargame, what's a euro, and what's AT. (With crossover, of course.) I'm suggesting that people have much more different and even conflicting ideas about what's an abstract. I've seen debates about whether Backgammon is an abstract, for example. With reasonable people arguing emphatically no, because it has dice, despite no theme whatsoever.

Which apparently 10% of BGGers do argue (10% classify it as strategy rather than abstract). I fall into that segment. I see a definite theme in chess not only in the piece names but in their movements and relative values and even frequency. Games like Abalone and the Project GIPF series on the other hand I do see as abstracts.

So yeah Paris Connection is kind of weird to me to win, very close to me to traditional euros ("strategy") that have a pasted-on theme.

Also worth noting that in the subdomain voting, 60% of BGGers consider Paris Connection "strategy" and only 20% "abstract".

Finally a game that I really do enjoy. I understand the concerns people have about one specific strategy being dominant, but I love the heart of the game. It takes the "deck building" genre and makes it thematic.

One of my favorite games is Paths of Glory, and the rules to that game had to be tweaked slightly after release to nerf a strategy that had become dominant. It hasn't been a problem. I'll enjoy this game either as is or (if appropriate) with tweaks.

Heheh. "Not a...!" is a BGG meme, so it was said tongue-in-cheek. I just wanted to be the first

Seriously though, whether or not game X is classed here as category Y or not isn't absolutely authoritative.

It's all decided by user poll, which is how My Little Pony Hide & Seek managed to become the #1 wargame for the weekend robot

All three games are very good in my opinion. I'm kind of on the fence as to whether Few Acres really is a wargame, however, if it is, it is a well deserved honor.

Would you say then that the game won on it's Wallace-ness as opposed to it's wargameness? That being, if A Few Acres of Snow were designed by anyone else other than a big name in games that it would not have won?

I'd hazzard a guess more of the voters have heard of/are familiar with Wallace's work then they are Volko Ruhnke's.

It may have attracted a certain number of crossover gamers that aren't necessarily wargamers. Wargame vote totals are usually very light as a rule, so it wouldn't take many crossover votes to skew the totals.

I have never played Earth Reborn, but have heard nothing but glowing reviews from friends that have very similar tastes in games to me. The other two are both brilliant two-player games. I would have been happy if either Labyrinth or Few Acres of snow took it.

Not a 2-player game!

I just wanted to be the ONLY one to say it. I think it's as silly a statement as "not a wargame". What is it then, a cookery programme?

Clearly, it's a Bob Ross painting show.

I am a big fan of the mechanics of this game. It is kind of a deck builder...but then it's not, but then it's a wargame...but not really, and then it's a CARD-driven wargame...but not really. It just has so many influences and in the end you can really tell it's a Martin Wallace game. Well deserved, I think.

Agreed. But I wish they'd keep gravy train/spin off/expansions in the the Best Expansions category so truly new games could be honored (same thing happened in Party Games).

Isn't it strange that Dixit Odyssey won 'best party game' and is nominated for 'best expansion'? I guess it is another one of those 'stand alone expansions' that gets to be both?

Exactly. It is a stand alone game which also works as an expansion for the base Dixit (which, in turn, works as an expansion for Dixit Odyssey... ninja)

So suddenly, a game becomes an expansion for another base game that didn't even exist when the first game came out?

Now I understand why I don't understand! The BGG classification is based on time travel!

Huh. You know, I didn't even notice that this wasn't a P&P game until you pointed this out, Andrew. Looking again, it's not even categorized as web-published on the game page.

:-/

Probably something that should have been brought up earlier in the voting process.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm genuinely happy for Mark, and it's nice to see self-published games get some recognition when they normally have so little -- it's just a bummer when it takes away from the print-and-play class.

Im disappointed that earth reborn didn't win for best thematic game or best 2-player game because its one of my favoretes... Although I haven't played Mansions of Madness or A Few Acres of Snow. Is there anyone who can compare these to earth reborn?

Congratulations to the winners

Anyone notice the games that won heavily were from GMT Games, Treefrog Games, and Asmodee? An interesting mix that to me shows any publisher can do well in these awards.

As to my own opinion? Well the voting method is a popular one so popularity and exposure are significant contributors (and thus the results not too surprising). I suppose the categories i'm most disappointed in are the off road ones (e.g. card game, wargame, party game, etc.) I'm more a purist and would love to see a traditional style game win to represent those categories (hex and counter for wargame; lone deck and suit of cards for card game) but since everyone from every taste votes it blends over to what will interest everyone.

Still I liked all the games in the voting so good job overall.
