This list originally came out in 2005, and is my first ever geek list. Whoop. De. Doo. I believe it shows my interest in Napoleonic wargames, my hits, my misses, and my need to be played and figured out games.

My latest addition to Napoleonic warfare. But at present (Sept 2007), I am involved in Ancients again, while collecting data for an ACW list I want to do. I would appreciate others commenting on Le Grand Empire.

This is the newest Napoleonic game, one I picked up on a trade. The idea of combining an operational/strategic area map with tactical maps sounds promising. My only "issue"--I always have issues; go figure--is that I do not like the Waterloo campaign. It is for that reason that you will see few Waterloo titles in my collection. Perhaps I will find the game so enjoyable that I won't worry about the history.

Beyond sentimental reasons, I am not sure why anyone would think highly of this game. It is classic SPI, but classic SPI could be fairly sparse and drab and two-dimensional, which is the nature of this Napoleonic offering.

This is my newest find, and I am not sure what to make of this heavy tactical monster. I did not find C&C Ancients to be either fun or satisfying from an historical standpoint. Memoir '44 is to laugh. Why get this game? I guess it is just the child within who still finds miniatures to be appealing.

Given that the Austrian campaign of 1809 is my favourite of all of them, I have really been looking forward to this design. Glad to see that OSG and Kevin Zucker are still in business. No one does operational Napoleonic warfare like OSG.

I am curious about how this one will play--and play out. It is a John Prados design, and he is one of my favourite designers. I like the area map concept, and ATO components tend to be better than good. I see a Davout counter; does this mean we can put Nappy's best marshal in the field instead of at the desk? The rules do look lengthy and complex; but since when has the ever stopped anyone from complaining?!

A nice find in a trade, and another Kevin Zucker design combined with the wonderful map and component quality of Ed Wimble's Clash of Arms. This 1814 campaign has always interested me and I need to do some reading up on it. The game seems a compact gem, with low counter density and a beautiful map.

This is my newest edition among my Napoleonic games, timed with new books on Napoleon and on Wellington. The game map, as others are at pains to point out, is a treat. The ruleboook, translated from French to English, will be what decides the fate of this game in my hands.

Heavens to Betsy! I had this as a teen, was fascinated by the two maps, two games concept, fiddled with it, lost it in the Great Basement Flood, and found it again a while back, getting it at a reasonable price. This is an old-school style gem. I do not think of one game (one is tactical, but really is not, the other strategic, and boy is it) as better than the other. I like both, and both give an early wargame feel to some highly complex logistical and operational challenges. Getting a four-colour map from SPI meant much in those hoary days of wargaming lore.

I love OSG games in general, but I prefer the 5x series to the others. However, the quality of product found in the 2x and 1x is so high, and good or better Napoleonic games seem so rare, that I made a rather expensive purchase to get a copy of this game, one I might have had and too quickly traded away.

The year 1814 was one of strategic system shock failure to the Napoleonic empire. At the same time, some of his best battlefield successes were recorded in this year. What is it about Napoleon--not a humanitarian, not a monster either--that calls for our admiration and even affection across two centuries? Perhaps it is the romantic in us, the appeal to the forlorn hope against overwhelming odds, and the pathos we feel for the human being that was in Bonaparte.

I have always wanted to wargame with miniatures ever since my early Airfix HO/OO 1/72 scale days. However, it is expensive to try and get anything close to complete, calls for skilfull and patient painting skills, which I clearly lack, and demands even more tablespace, or as much, as my monster games. If I ever were to lose my mind and invest, I would use a set of rules such as the ones found here.

These Hexsim games are often hit or miss with me do to the "quality" of the components, or the lack thereof. I think the recent efforts have been better, and so I will risk a game or two and see what I can make of it all.

I am not sure what the gaming fascination is with Leipzig; I find the spring to autumn campaign leading up to the battle to be much more compelling, much more important. Yet here is another refinement. At least it is not Waterloo, an overrated battle--this is not to say unimportant--that has yet to receive a proper treatment in a wargame; but, then, the history books don't know what to make of it either, after all this time.

I picked up the 2002 edition in a trade, set it up, read the rules, hated everything about it except the GMT components, and traded it away, but only after seriously considering setting it on fire on top of a dung pile. I am a loyal GMT devotee, but when GMT pulls a lulu, it pulls out all the stops.

As I am a sucker for punishment, short and long term, I thought I would give this new and improved 2nd edition a try. The p-500 price was good, my love of Napoleonic campaigns is strong, and I had the available funds. What I got was a 2nd edition lemon, complete with that new car smell, and those shiny bright components. I let it go in another trade.

I have this on the table even as I type (and such comments go out of date faster than a chess innovation does in this cyber age). The rules are as dense as a primeval forest, and have fiddly written on every page. But perhaps the whole will prove better than the sum of its parts, or some such thing. I am too interested in Napoleon's Russian campaign to at least not give it a try; besides, there are only about 17 000 geeks wanting to trade it, so it is not likely to ever go out the door.

Our Spaniards in the community are, for the most part, rating this highly; but there are exceptions. GMT's Wellington was too light, too much like its mother, to be satisfying. Perhaps this can fill the need for a good Spanish Ulcer game.

When I was just out of high school, about a hundred years or so ago, I picked up the Avalon Hill edition and played in ftf a good while. It disappeared with the ages. Now I have the 4th edition. I picked it up with my gaming group at school in mind. I will try it with two players on the French side, since they have one activation each, and, of course, the English and Prussian players.

I have one or two house rules in mind for this group, but let us play it as written, first, and then we can experiment.

In this new addition, the shiny, really, really, shiny stickers stand out. Though the main map is larger, it should be larger still; still, it is a nice piece of work.
