This list tracks the second generation of the popular regimental American Civil War game system that started with Terrible Swift Sword (SPI) in 1976. (The list following the original system (1976-1986) is available at http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listid=75...

The Horse Soldiers, in 3W's S&T 119, was the first change in the venerable TSS system. Gone was the sequential movement system, and instead the impulse movement system. The results? A new era in the GBACW system begins.

Baton Rouge makes its appearence in 3W's S&T133, featuring supporting fire by an Ironclad. The real draw, though, is the actual battle in the streets of Baton Rouge. But by the time this game sees print, the GBACW has turned into a road show....

This is a Richard Berg game, is it not? It is also an interesting battle that took place in the wider context of the Vicksburg campaign, and as such, Baton Rouge has always been in its shadow. It has received more serious attention in relatively recent Civil War writing.

...with the release of The Guns of Cedar Creek by Simulation Designs Inc. Officially listed as Volume 13 in the GBACW system, Cedar Creek breathes new life into the system. Berg's super treatment & great maps are well received, as is the revival of a terrific system. But it is the paper-thin counters that are the main chatter!

First Blood is the second release of the new SDI GBACW system, boasting 4 maps on slick quality paper - and 6 sheets of super-thick laminated counters! With the basic and exclusive rule books, the game commands the attention of ACW fans, redeeming the goodwill the poor counters in Guns cost SDI.

Is it just me, or is this slick mapboard a decided let-down, both in terms of color and quality, as compared to most games in the first and second series?

I have this game (I think?!), but I have yet to play it, and me, I'm a big fan of William S. "Old Rosy" Rosecrans. I am curious as to how this tactical Civil War games compare to their tactical Napoleonic counterparts.

I'd like to hear those same comments. I can answer it for the 1970-80's versions, but I have no idea how the last 15 years have been for Napoleonic game systems...

Anybody out there want to enlighten us?

But it is another 4 years before the next actual development. In 1999, GMT releases the Battle of Chickamauga, a fan favorite.

Certainly an understandable statement. I remember when wargames were plentiful and cheap, and gamers were in short supply. Today the world looks much different, with many games landing in the $100 range - or worse, if they are OOP...

River of Death was the first GBACW game with counters using color-coding to indicate the formation of the unit.robot The end result is counters that look incredibly busy and loud. More importantly, the colors are so close in appearance that it is difficult to organize the units by brigade without a lot of squinting. The original TSS counters had no problem showing the formation.

Did anybody else get two sets of maps with this game? There are subtle differences in color between them but no other differences I can see. Which is the official one?

Red Badge of Courage follows in 2001, which is a prickly problem, since it re-creates the same games as First Blood (the 1st and 2nd Battles of Manassas!)

Russ, is this a Richard Berg design? If so, is it his "final word" (final for the year it appeared) on what he began with Terrible Swift Sword? Another game in need of team play.

Final? As you said, final for this year?

Actually, it seems clear to me this game is aimed at people that might have been original TSS fans. While they have settled on 50 men per strength point as opposed to the original 100 men, the scale is 125 yards per hex, which is almost the same. (The original TSS was 120 yards per hex.)

More telling though, is the time scale: it retains the original 20 minutes a turn, where the rest of the series is at 1 hour a turn. (Red Badge, River, Gringo - e.g. all the GMT games.)

The counters show the biggest change - lots of art, and lots of color. The system changes? Beyond the impulse (and the chance to double up turns) the use of skirmishers are a big change, as well.

That's how you get so many 'versions.' The GBACW rules, which were 'standard' for the first ten years, are now 'living rules' and at v 4.5 since roughly 1989.

But best of all? The third edition map (2004/5 edition) is flippin' GORGEOUS!

And since the scale is almost the same? If you are stuck on the original? Get out your old counters! Woooo- whooo!

For a new wargamer and an adament civil war buff/reenactor which game would be the best to jump into? And with availability taken into account. I don't want to be scouring the earth for something I'll never find...

Personally, I think the old series is much more approachable than the impulse system. The new system seemed "tacked on". I tried it and tried it and just couldn't enjoy it. I always felt the original system worked fine and, for what it was trying to simulate, was interactive enough. The impulse system just was too chaotic for my taste.

So, if I were going to suggest this system to a new player, I'd go with Pea Ride or Wilson's Creek. Small, fast action and a way to get your feet wet. I still see punched copies available for reasonable dough.

A set of simple rules are being tested as we speak. That would be for the GMT serie. So far i like this system rules and will play again. These are Good for 3 Days of Gettysburgh, Red Badge of Courage, River of Death and Gringo.

For a new wargamer, the GBACW system would be a tough first game. I'd try to get a copy of the AH/Hasbro game Battle Cry, which would give you some exposure to some wargame concepts like LOS.

Next, I'd probably go with one of the Gamers/MMP CWB series games. It's got a large rule book, but one that's fairly easy to digest. For your first playing, skip the command and control rules and just go to a short scenario where the troops are already in contact to learn the combat mechanics. I think No Better Place to Die (battle of Stones River) is currently on sale at the MMP website for $10.

After that, I'd go for Red Badge of Courage. It's a fairly digestable (2 maps) game with some small learning scenarios and the two full battles of 1st and 2nd Bull Run. I think the current GBACW games work pretty well as there is no record keeping (everything is kept track of by markers on the unit counters). The system does a nice job a showing the chaos on the battlefield with the orders system and chit pull activiations. The graphics on the GMT games are far superior to the older SPI, SPI/TSR and SDI games.

The Gamers/MMP regimental series is also good, but the only reasonable sized one is A Fearful Slaughter (Shiloh)with two maps and a price tag of under $100.

As a starter game, I would suggest going to ebay and finding South Mountain (West End) or Across 5 Aprils as the first intro to wargaming the ACW...both should be pretty inexpensive ($30 tops)...

you can skip BattleCry if you are over 8 years old...

There are plenty of gamers here to help you along and these are two terrific games. You just have to ask...

After that is played, and you have decided on which direction you want to go - you can look at the premier ACW games out there - GBACW (as listed here), The Gamers CWB (although I would grab a $10 copy of No Better Place to Die now - that is a price worth jumping at)...or Summer Storm (a third complex game type that people don't mention here often but worth a passing thought)...we'll be here to tell you about those three when you are ready.
