This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty, but as always, add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our King Belial I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings Great_Mazinga, minionhunter, Krazygit, EvilTimmy and Blackwind.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
well now. the kosmos german edition of this game. inside was a note written on the back of an "imperial assembly" sign up form. something to do with legend of the five rings and in ontario, CA. and a reference to www.gamecabinet.com and that they also have seafarers expansion.
so a kosmos german edition, purchased in ontario, and now in a houston goodwill. interesting journey.
GW $1.99 My dry spell's starting to end it seems. Only 1 deck cards unwrapped - cardboard standees unpunched. I don't get it - sure I have games I haven't played but everything gets punched and bagged almost right away (except 1830 - still too pretty to punch), how do folks buy then don't even look before donating? And I found out I keep my job for a few more months at least.
Desseret in Chula Vista $4 Appears complete but the box shows signs of hard handling. Another person was pawing over a Star Wars Risk, and had cut the tape doing an inventory, on what I imagine was another $4 price tagged game. The 3 shelves were ALL marked $4. i got a dirty look when I snapped up War, Age of Imperium and this one. He said something to his wife (who was sitting there with a bored "whatever" look)but kept up his inventory.
Quick visit this evening at the usual VV on my way home. Still no shrink-wrapped HeroQuest tonight and as it has come to be expected only one game standing out from the crowd of kiddy games and Monopolies.
I knew pretty much nothing about the game but remembered seeing it quite often on the Thiftlists. I also remembered the rule never to leave an Avalon Hill game behind so for 2$ this oldtimer of a game became mine.
It is complete and in really nice shape for such an old game and partially/completely unpunched depending on how the deck of cards used to come originally. Mine are separated but considering the perforations on the sides I guess they might have come as sheets to cut yourself. But the tokens are almost completely unpunched as two of them took offense at such neglect and decided to jump out of the sprues.
I don't usually play these kind of games and admittedly bought this one hoping I could resell it quickly (And considering the price I paid I should not have much trouble making at least a tiny profit with an unpunched AH game even if this one does not seem to fetch really high prices) but as usual in these situations I find myself vaguely interested in the game and so for now it will join the rest of my collection, waiting for me to take the time to learn the rules and coerce someone else to play it. Or for a decent trade. Or for the prices to skyrocket on auction sites
I only got this because I found one a few weeks back and counted out all the bits and was excited that it was complete. Well I was so focused on all the little bits and cards I did not notice that copy was missing the board! The largest thing in the box was missing and I totally missed it. Still not sure how I managed that.
This one is really for real complete, I double checked then triple checked.
Picked this up complete and in great shape for $2.99 at the GW way up on La Canada & Lambert. All the games there are priced about double compared to the other Tucson GW's, but this didn't have a sticker on it so instead of their typical $4.99-6.99, they offered $2.99 at the register. I just had to take it, what with my strict "No Uberplay Left Behind" policy. Although, I'd be lying if I said I didn't already have a trade proposal out for it
$1.50 @ SVdP box worn, top beat up, pieces excellent seems complete, although I haven’t found a full parts list, and the thread here about it is somewhat inconclusive
This has been on my wishlist ever since someone on this list reminded me about the Incredible Patent Picker Move Maker machine (dice tower). We used to roll the dice over and over as kids, just to hear that bell ding. It must have driven my parents crazy (and now it’s payback time)!
